Abstract

The interdependence between water and energy (water-energy nexus) has been identified as one of the major challenges at European level, with roadmaps calling for the development of integrated approaches in this sector. The increase in river temperature is at the heart of this nexus, with anthropogenic thermal pollution adding to the effect of global warming. River Water Heat Pumps can play a major role by decarbonising district heating network (DHN) while actively cooling the aquatic resource. Hence, the objective of this short communication is to identify the scientific challenges to be met and the progress to be achieved considering the current state of the art. To illustrate the point, a rapid evaluation of the potential is performed for the city of Lyon in France resulting in an achievable cooling of ∼1.5 K which is above the minimum threshold to see an effect on aquatic ecosystem while the CO2 savings are significant for the DHN (∼ divided by a factor of 10). Because of its holistic nature, the impact assessment of such a system implies considering a wide diversity of indicators: energy, environmental, economics and sociological that need to be appropriately defined and quantified. In each field, progress beyond the state of the art to be performed has been identified, e.g. 4E analysis, cold water plume dispersion, integration of biodiversity in LCA.

Abstract

Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12-month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1–3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8–10.6%, relative to current mass loss. In contrast, expected changes in atmospheric N deposition will decrease the mid-term mass loss of high-quality litter by 1.4–2.2% and that of low-quality litter by 0.9–1.5% in the temperate biome. Our results suggest that projected increases in N deposition may have the capacity to dampen the climate-driven increases in litter decomposition depending on the biome and decomposition stage of substrate.

4. Effects of wind waves versus ship waves on tidal marsh plants: a flume study on different life stages of Scirpus maritimus.

Abstract

Recent research indicates that many ecosystems, including intertidal marshes, follow the alternative stable states theory. This theory implies that thresholds of environmental factors can mark a limit between two opposing stable ecosystem states, e.g. vegetated marshes and bare mudflats. While elevation relative to mean sea level is considered as the overall threshold condition for colonization of mudflats by vegetation, little is known about the individual driving mechanisms, in particular the impact of waves, and more specifically of wave period. We studied the impact of different wave regimes on plants in a full scale flume experiment. Seedlings and adult shoots of the pioneer Scirpus maritimus were subjected to two wave periods at two water levels. Drag forces acting on, and sediment scouring occurring around the plants were quantified, as these are the two main mechanisms determining plant establishment and survival. Depending on life stage, two distinct survival strategies emerge: seedlings present a stress avoidance strategy by being extremely flexible, thus limiting the drag forces and thereby the risk of breaking. Adult shoots present a stress tolerance strategy by having stiffer stems, which gives them a higher resistance to breaking. These strategies work well under natural, short period wind wave conditions. For long period waves, however, caused e.g. by ships, these survival strategies have a high chance to fail as the flexibility of seedlings and stiffness of adults lead to plant tissue failure and extreme drag forces respectively. This results in both cases in strongly bent plant stems, potentially limiting their survival.

5. Ecosystem Engineering by Plants on Wave-Exposed Intertidal Flats Is Governed by Relationships between Effect and Response Traits.

Abstract

In hydrodynamically stressful environments, some species--known as ecosystem engineers--are able to modify the environment for their own benefit. Little is known however, about the interaction between functional plant traits and ecosystem engineering. We studied the responses of Scirpus tabernaemontani and Scirpus maritimus to wave impact in full-scale flume experiments. Stem density and biomass were used to predict the ecosystem engineering effect of wave attenuation. Also the drag force on plants, their bending angle after wave impact and the stem biomechanical properties were quantified as both responses of stress experienced and effects on ecosystem engineering. We analyzed lignin, cellulose, and silica contents as traits likely effecting stress resistance (avoidance, tolerance). Stem density and biomass were strong predictors for wave attenuation, S. maritimus showing a higher effect than S. tabernaemontani. The drag force and drag force per wet frontal area both differed significantly between the species at shallow water depths (20 cm). At greater depths (35 cm), drag forces and bending angles were significantly higher for S. maritimus than for S. tabernaemontani. However, they do not differ in drag force per wet frontal area due to the larger plant surface of S. maritimus. Stem resistance to breaking and stem flexibility were significantly higher in S. tabernaemontani, having a higher cellulose concentration and a larger cross-section in its basal stem parts. S. maritimus had clearly more lignin and silica contents in the basal stem parts than S. tabernaemontani. We concluded that the effect of biomass seems more relevant for the engineering effect of emergent macrophytes with leaves than species morphology: S. tabernaemontani has avoiding traits with minor effects on wave attenuation; S. maritimus has tolerating traits with larger effects. This implies that ecosystem engineering effects are directly linked with traits affecting species stress resistance and responding to stress experienced.

6. Effect of climate-related change in vegetation on leaf litter consumption and energy storage by Gammarus pulex from Continental or Mediterranean populations.

Abstract

As a consequence of global warming, it is important to characterise the potential changes occurring for some functional processes through the intra-specific study of key species. Changes in species distribution, particularly when key or engineer species are affected, should contribute to global changes in ecosystem functioning. In this study, we examined the potential consequences induced by global warming on ecosystem functioning in term of organic matter recycling. We compared consumption of leaf litter by some shredder populations (Gammarus pulex) between five tree species inhabiting continental (i.e., the northern region of the Rhône River Valley) and/or Mediterranean (i.e., the southern region of the Rhône River Valley) conditions. To consider any potential adaptation of the gammarid population to vegetation in the same climate conditions, three populations of the key shredder Gammarus pulex from the northern region and three from the southern region of the Rhône River Valley were used. We experimentally compared the effects of the geographical origin of both the gammarid populations and the leaf litter species on the shredding activity and the physiological state of animals (through body triglyceride content). This study demonstrated that leaf toughness is more important than geographical origin for determining shredder leaf litter consumption. The overall consumption rate of the gammarid populations from the southern region of Rhône Valley was much higher than that of the populations from the northern region, but no clear differences between the origins of the leaf litter (i.e., continental vs. Mediterranean) were observed. The northwards shift of G. pulex populations adapted to warmer conditions might significantly modify organic matter recycling in continental streams. As gammarid populations can demonstrate local adaptations to certain leaf species as a trophic resource, changes in riparian vegetation associated with climate change might locally affect the leaf litter degradation process by this shredder.

7. The clone wars: the Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) vs the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) – characterization of a potential herbivory

Abstract

The Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) is considered as highly invasive in Europe and is largely widespread in France, without any established predator. This short study first characterized the herbivory of Fallopia by the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus), a commonly encountered coleopteran in France. Through an experimental design of leaf choices, between Fragaria spp. and Fallopia spp., our results show that the insects prefer Fallopia, even if it is presented for the first time. Even if this simple observation may appear as trivial, it highlights a novel plant-insect interaction and may start new insight in plant control or invasion management.

Abstract

International audience; Artificial light at night (ALAN) is recognized as one of the major anthropogenic pollutants jeopardizing biodiversity at a global scale. Few studies have focused on the impacts of nocturnal light on freshwater ecosystems despite their increasing exposure to light pollution worldwide due to human activities along rivers or lakes. By modifying metabolism, the disruption of natural light regime could modify the leaf palatability and affect the plant-herbivore interactions which can partly determine the structure of macrophyte communities. By experimentally mimicking light conditions from sub-urban areas, we measured the effects of low-level light at night on the leaf traits of an aquatic plant, Ceratophyllum demersum, and herbivory by the snail Lymnaea stagnalis, a generalist feeder. We demonstrate that artificial light at night increases the herbivory rate: leaves of C. demersum that had been exposed to ALAN for three months were 1.6 times more consumed by L. stagnalis than control leaves. The increase in C. demersum palatability to the pond snail when plants were exposed to ALAN was not due to a decrease in dry matter content or to a modification of the biomechanical characteristics of the leaves. Because snails have not been exposed to nocturnal light before or during the herbivory experiment, this increase in leaf palatability, is possibly linked to modifications of primary and/or secondary metabolism. Our results suggest that ALAN is a potential key factor affecting ecological processes in aquatic ecosystems such as trophic networks.

Abstract

International audience; Secondary dispersal of terrestrial plant species through watercourses increases the dispersal range of floating seeds but their exposure to water may also challenge their viability and colonisation potential. Many terrestrial invasive species benefit from watercourses to extend their invasive range because water exposure can favour seed germination and early survival of seedlings for species sensitive to dry conditions and water flow enhances their dispersal distance downstream. Floatability, germination rate and survival after water exposure are seed traits involved in water dispersal and their variability may lead to different dispersal strategies. To address the question of the variability of achene traits involved in dispersal, we experimentally measured these three traits for Fallopia × bohemica achenes collected from 10 different stands. The floatability of achenes varied between stands from 2.5 to 5 days and their germination in water extended this period to 20 days through the emergence of floating seedlings. Germination proportions also differed between stands from 0.3 to 0.95 and were negatively related to the median germination time. Seedling survival after planting in soil was affected by their exposure time. This effect differed between stands, but a short germination time did not explain a better survival of some stands. These results show that achenes may differ in their dispersal potential in terms of floatability, as well as tolerance of seedlings to water exposure during dispersal. This study also highlights the fact that achenes of some stands present a combination of traits particularly adapted to long distance dispersal through watercourses, which can contribute to the extension of the invaded area.

International audience; 1. The increasing use of artificial light at night has led to ecosystem exposure to light pollution worldwide. Aquatic ecosystems are particularly exposed, since lit road networks, urban development and industrial infrastructure are frequently located along river, lake, and sea shores. Although the negative effects of night- time lighting on the physiology, behaviour, and life-history traits of animals have been largely documented, there is a large knowledge gap about the responses of plants, especially regarding leaf functioning and resource-management strategies. Some authors have proposed contrasting hypotheses of mechanistic responses to dim light at night in plants, but empirical results are still lacking.2. Based on field measurements of nocturnal irradiance in freshwater ecosystems located in peri-urban areas, we performed a mesocosm experiment using three species of submerged aquatic plants. After 5 months of exposure to realistic dim light at night, four functional traits related to the resource management at the leaf level were measured.3. Artificial light at night had significant effects on the leaf physiology or chemistry, affecting their resource acquisition rate, but with different response intensities depending on the species. No effect was found on morphological or biomechani- cal traits for any of the studied species.4. These results support the hypothesis that plants could interpret dim light at night as a shaded environment and respond accordingly.5. Abstract

International audience; Intensive agriculture uses increasingly large amounts of nitrogen fertilizers to increase yields because nitrogen is one of the limiting factor of plant growth. Plants are in direct competition with denitrifying bacteria for nitrate, but biological denitrification inhibition (BDI) is a strategy developed by some plants in which procyanidins are produced that inhibit denitrification. This phenomenon increases the available nitrate in the soil. Previous results showed that the addition of procyanidins to lettuce fields allowed effective BDI and increased soil nitrate and plant growth. However, agriculture is performed in different soils, and the action of procyanidins could depend on the type of soil. In this study, we tested the effect of procyanidin amendment on lettuce growth in two types of soils: loamy sand and sandy clay loam. Our results show that in both soils, the addition of procyanidins causes inhibition of denitrification, an increase in available nitrate, counter-selection of denitrification communities and a gain in plant mass without modification of the soil structure. This study highlights a sustainable agricultural method effective in a variety of soils.

Abstract

Invasions constitute a major driver of biodiversity changes. Insular plant communities are particularly vulnerable to invasions and are relevant models for investigating mechanisms supporting the establishment and spread of introduced plants. Terrestrial flora of sub-Antarctic islands must often thrive in highly windy habitats, thus imposing strong mechanical constraints on individuals. Many alien plants at the sub-Antarctic islands are of tropical or temperate origins, where they were exposed to less stringent wind conditions. As wind likely represents a strong environmental filter for the successful establishment and further geographic spread of plants, they should have developed responses to resist and successfully colonize the Iles Kerguelen. We studied responses to wind of three herbaceous species that are invasive at Iles Kerguelen. We sampled plant individuals at different locations, under windy and sheltered conditions. Traits related to wind avoidance and tolerance and to resource acquisition were measured. We additionally assessed individual performance (biomass) to determine the consequences of trait variations. We focused on trait mean and variance, in particular, through the calculation of hypervolumes. This study emphasized that wind has important effects on plant economics spectrum, including traits involved in mechanical avoidance and light acquisition, with varying strategies, which seem to depend on the biological type of the species (grass versus non-grass). Wind generally reduces individual performance, and this negative effect is not direct but operates through the modification of plant trait values. Furthermore, analyses performed at the hypervolume scale indicate that not only functional trait mean but also its variability account for plant performance. The existence of contrasting growth strategies to cope with local environmental conditions suggests that invaders will be able to occupy different niches, which may ultimately impact local communities. Abstract

International audience; Spatial heterogeneity plays a crucial role in the coexistence of species. Despite recogni- tion of the importance of self-organization in creating environmental heterogeneity in otherwise uni- form landscapes, the effects of such self-organized pattern formation in promoting coexistence through facilitation are still unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of pattern formation on species interactions and community spatial structure in ecosystems with limited underlying envi- ronmental heterogeneity, using self-organized patchiness of the aquatic macrophyte Callitriche platy- carpa in streams as a model system. Our theoretical model predicted that pattern formation in aquatic vegetation – due to feedback interactions between plant growth, water flow and sedimentation pro- cesses – could promote species coexistence, by creating heterogeneous flow conditions inside and around the plant patches. The spatial plant patterns predicted by our model agreed with field observa- tions at the reach scale in naturally vegetated rivers, where we found a significant spatial aggregation of two macrophyte species around C. platycarpa. Field transplantation experiments showed that C. platycarpa had a positive effect on the growth of both beneficiary species, and the intensity of this facilitative effect was correlated with the heterogeneous hydrodynamic conditions created within and around C. platycarpa patches. Our results emphasize the importance of self-organized patchiness in promoting species coexistence by creating a landscape of facilitation, where new niches and facilitative effects arise in different locations. Understanding the interplay between competition and facilitation is therefore essential for successful management of biodiversity in many ecosystems.

Abstract

Tidal marsh vegetation is increasingly valued for its role in ecosystem-based coastal protection due to its wave dissipating capacity. As the efficiency of wave dissipation is known to depend on specific vegetation properties, we quantified how these morphological, biochemical, and biomechanical properties of tidal marsh vegetation are, in turn, affected by wave exposure. This was achieved by field measurements at two locations, with contrasting wave exposure, in the brackish part of the Scheldt Estuary (SW Netherlands), where Scirpus maritimus is the dominant pioneer species. Our results show that shoots from more wave-exposed conditions developed significantly shorter and thicker stems than the ones growing in more sheltered conditions. Furthermore, we show that the more exposed shoots are more flexible whereas the shoots growing in more sheltered conditions are stiffer. This may indicate plasticity in response to wave exposure following a stress-avoidance strategy. Increasing stiffness was shown to be related to enhanced biogenic silica and lignin contents of the shoot tissue. These properties might affect the wave-attenuating capacity of the marsh as stiff plants are known to mitigate waves more effectively than flexible ones. However, we also found higher shoot densities on the exposed site, which may partly explain why higher relative wave attenuation rates were found on the exposed site, despite the presence of more flexible individual shoots. This study highlights that the efficiency of wave attenuation by tidal marsh vegetation ultimately depends on mutual interactions between waves and plasticity in morphological, biochemical, and biomechanical plant properties.

Abstract

The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is a damaging invader which is designated as a species of Union Concern within the European Union. A negative impact of the crabs on macrophyte vegetation in lowland rivers is suspected but not yet proven or quantified. We have performed a mesocosm study that combines a density gradient of Chinese mitten crabs (0, 0.3, 1.0 and 2.5 ind. m(-2)) with chemical stress (2350 mu g EDTA L-1 + 258 mu g glyphosate L-1) or light limitation stress (- 70% irradiance compared to control) on water plants (Myriophyllum spicatum). The results clearly demonstrate that the crabs are capable of removing plant shoots effectively which can lead to a complete elimination of the vegetation. Generally, the higher the crab density, the sooner the plants started to disappear and the sooner the vegetation was completely removed. Additional light and chemical stress accelerated this process: plant disappearance at a crab density of 0.3 ind. m(-2) compared to 1.0 ind. m(-2) in the control treatments. Video recording, plant strength and crab pinch strength measurements and stable isotope signatures of delta C-13 and delta N-15 in the Chinese mitten crabs and their possible food sources showed that directly eating the plants is causing only minor damage to the plants. Most damage comes from the movement of the crabs and crab-crab interactions during which they use their chelae to grasp the shoots. We conclude that a decline of vegetation as a consequence of Chinese mitten crab behaviour can be a realistic scenario in freshwater ecosystems and warrants close attention and monitoring. Being primary producers and ecological engineers, macrophytes are key species in these ecosystems, whose services are lost when they disappear and are difficult to restore.

Abstract

International audience; Nitrogen is one of the factors limiting in plant growth, is naturally present in soils, and is mainly assimilated as nitrate and ammonium by plants. However, soil nitrate is also used by denitrifying bacteria, which reduce it to N2O (a greenhouse gas) and N-2. Therefore, plants are in direct competition with these bacteria for the assimilation of nitrate. Recently, our research team has highlighted a strategy developed by some plants consisting of the production of secondary metabolites (procyanidins) that inhibit the denitrification activity of microbial communities in soils, referred to as BDI for biological denitrification inhibition (BDI). This strategy could make nitrate more available in the soil, which may then be used by plants for their growth. However, the extent to which procyanidins can affect plant growth and nutrition via BDI under field conditions has not yet been investigated. In this study, we tested the effect of procyanidins exogenously applied in the field on the nutrition and growth of cos or romaine lettuce crops (Lactuca saliva) nutrition and growth. Procyanidins were added to growing lettuce at 8, 42, 83 and 210 kg ha(-1). Soil denitrification enzyme activity (DEA), nitrate concentration, above- and below-ground lettuce traits and the abundance of total bacteria and denitrifiers were measured in lettuces treated or untreated with procyanidins. Our results showed that the addition of procyanidins in the field at 210 kg ha(-1) resulted in: (1) the inhibition of microbial denitrification activity and counter-selection of denitrifiers in the root-adhering soil of lettuce and (2) an increase in available nitrate and a significant gain in plant productivity. This study allowed us to propose for the short term the development of a more environmentally friendly method of sustainable agriculture by limiting fertilizer inputs, nitrogen losses from the soil, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing plant growth and productivity.

Abstract

International audience; Interactions between biological and physical processes, so‐called bio‐physical feedbacks, are important for landscape evolution. While these feedbacks have been quantified for isolated patches of vegetation in aquatic ecosystems, we still lack knowledge of how the location of one patch affects the occurrence of others. To test for patterns in the spatial distribution of vegetation patches in streams, we first measured the distance between Callitriche platycarpa patches using aerial images. Then, we measured the effects of varying patch separation distance on flow velocity, turbulence, and drag on plants in a field manipulation experiment. Lastly, we investigated whether these patterns of patch alignment developed over time following locations of reduced hydrodynamic forces, using 2‐yr field observations of the temporal patch dynamics of Ranunculus penicillatus in a lowland chalk stream. Our results suggest that vegetation patches in streams organize themselves in V‐like shapes to reduce drag forces, creating an optimal configuration that decreases hydrodynamic forces and may therefore encourage patch growth. Downstream patches are more frequently found at the rear and slightly overlapping the upstream patch, in locations that are partially sheltered by the established upstream vegetation while ensuring exposure to incoming flow (important for nutrient availability). Observations of macrophyte patch dynamics over time indicated that neighboring patches tend to grow in a slightly angled line, producing a spatial pattern resembling the V‐formation in migratory birds. These findings point to the general role of bio‐physical interactions in shaping how organisms align themselves spatially to aerodynamic and hydrodynamic flows at a range of scales.

Abstract

Many landscapes are characterized by a patchy, rather than homogeneous, distribution of vegetation. Often this patchiness is composed of single‐species patches with contrasting traits, interacting with each other. To date, it is unknown whether patches of different species affect each other's uptake of resources by altering hydrodynamic conditions, and how this depends on their spatial patch configuration. Patches of two contrasting aquatic macrophyte species (i.e., dense canopy‐forming Callitriche and sparse canopy‐forming Groenlandia) were grown together in a racetrack flume and placed in different patch configurations. We measured 15NH4+ uptake rates and hydrodynamic properties along the centerline and the lateral edge of both patches. When the species with a taller, denser canopy (Callitriche) was located upstream of the shorter, sparser species (Groenlandia), it generated turbulence in its wake that enhanced nutrient uptake for the sparser Groenlandia. At the same time, Callitriche benefited from being located at a leading edge where it was exposed to higher mean velocity, as its canopy was too dense for turbulence to penetrate from upstream. Consistent with this, we found that ammonium uptake rates depended on turbulence level for the sparse Groenlandia and on mean flow velocity for the dense Callitriche, but Total Kinetic Energy was the best descriptor of uptake rates for both species. By influencing turbulence, macrophyte species interact with each other through facilitation of resource uptake. Hence, heterogeneity due to multispecific spatial patchiness has crucial implications for both species interactions and aquatic ecosystem functions, such as nitrogen retention.

Abstract

International audience; Vegetation patches play an important role in controlling sediment deposition in shallow aquatic environments such as coastal saltmarshes and fluvial systems. However, predicting deposition around vegetation patches is difficult due to the complexity of patch morphology and their dynamic interaction with the flow. Here we incorporate a biomechanical model, parameterized using field data, within a 3-D computational fluid dynamics model which allows prediction of individual shoot reconfiguration within patches due to flow forcing. The model predicts velocity attenuation and bed shear stresses within the wake of the patch which agree spatially with accretion patterns measured in the field using terrestrial lidar. The model is applied to sparse patches of Suaeda maritima, located in saltmarshes of coastal habitats, to explore the role of (I) shoot distribution, (II) patch geometry, (III) shoot flexural rigidity, and (IV) bulk flow velocity in determining the length of the predicted wake region. We demonstrate that for Suaeda maritima, with intermediate rigidity, the vertical shear layer over the vegetation controls the length of the predicted wake region. Consequently, reconfiguration due to flexural rigidity strongly impacts on wake length, confounding the relationship between patch height and wake length. A simplified model for predicting wake length based on shoot reconfiguration is applied to the simulation data and shows good agreement. The results demonstrate that the observed wake characteristics can be well explained by intraspecific variability in flexural rigidity, thus demonstrating the importance of biomechanical traits in determining flow-vegetation-sediment interactions.

Abstract

International audience; Biotic and abiotic factors are important drivers of the introduction, dispersal and establishment of an invasive species in fluvial corridors. In this study, we propose to better understand the spatial distribution of Asian knotweeds and to model their invasibility at the river basin scale in the Rhône Mediterranean and Corsica regions, France. We implemented a multiscale analysis of biophysical and anthropogenic factors related to the presence of knotweeds. Subbasins were sampled (50–600 km2), a large dataset on knotweed occurrence and biotic/abiotic factors was collected, and logistic regression was applied. A robust logit model (accuracy: 90%; false positive rate: 13%) estimated the probability of the occurrence of knotweeds at the river basin scale. We found clear evidence of: i) spatial scale-dependent water availability for knotweed implantation (e.g., summer vs. winter rainfalls > 250 mm); ii) an important role of hydrogeomorphic forces in dispersal; and iii) interspecific competition in riparian areas. The occurrence of knotweeds is also closely related to human-derived pressures. The management of knotweeds on roads and railways in the vicinity of rivers may be a major source of propagules. Hydraulic infrastructures (dikes and mill weirs) may also have served as locations of knotweed introduction since the end of the nineteenth century and may play a major role in the propagule transfer of knotweed; to date, these infrastructures have provided favourable conditions for knotweed establishment. Despite local water authorities' increasing awareness of invasive plants, local management practices for flood mitigation, low awareness of roads/railway managers, and negative representations of knotweeds have probably largely contributed to their dispersion over decades. The final model intends to integrate these biophysical and human factors by providing an operational tool to help river managers determine the sensitivity of their river basins to knotweed invasion.

Abstract

Questions The effect of dewatering on aquatic plant communities may vary with sediment properties, such as particle size and organic matter content, as both control water retention in the sediment during dewatering. No study has tested how sediment type affects the short-term response of plant communities to dewatering. We hypothesized that for the same dewatering event: (1) organic, silt and coarse sediments rank along a gradient of water deficit, with which community resistance and resilience decrease; (2) species survival during the event depend on their known ecological affinity for water; and (3) a peak in species richness associated with an intermediate water deficit occurs in silty habitats. Location Riverine wetlands in the floodplain of the Ain River, France. Methods Eighteen sampling units were defined, set over three sediment types: gravel-dominated coarse sediment, silt and organic matter-dominated sediment. For each sediment type, three sampling units were permanently aquatic, and three sampling units underwent summer dewatering. A survey of species cover was conducted in each sampling unit at four times: before summer dewatering, at the beginning of the event, at the end of the event and 2 months after rewetting. Community resistance and resilience were assessed, as were changes over time in the proportions of species according their water affinity (hydrophytes, amphiphytes and helophytes, documented from the floras), and the effect of dewatering on species renewal and richness. Results The sediment type affected aquatic plant community resistance and resilience, with increasing disturbance intensity for silty, followed by coarse compared with organic sediment. Organic sediment retained water efficiently during dewatering, supporting high community resistance, with the maintenance of amphiphytes and more tolerant hydrophytes. On silty sediment, disturbance was sufficiently high to cause the disappearance of hydrophyte vegetative parts, but propagules rapidly sprouted after rewetting, suggesting their preservation in the sediment and enabling good community resilience. On coarse sediment, a decrease in resident amphiphyte abundance, together with helophyte colonization and maintenance after rewetting were observed. Coarse sediment is not favourable to propagule survival, explaining the low community resilience. Contrary to our hypothesis, a linear positive relationship between disturbance intensity and species richness was observed after dewatering. Conclusion The present study demonstrates that a simple description of sediment type allows prediction of dewatering impact on aquatic plant communities: organic, silt and coarse sediments were ranked along a gradient of water deficit, along which resistance and resilience decreased.

Abstract

International audience; Aquatic plants fulfil a wide range of ecological roles, and make a substantial contribution to the structure, function and service provision of aquatic ecosystems. Given their well-documented importance in aquatic ecosystems, research into aquatic plants contin- ues to blossom. The 14th International Symposium on Aquatic Plants, held in Edinburgh in September 2015, brought together 120 delegates from 28 countries and six continents. This special issue of Hydrobiologia includes a select number of papers on aspects of aquatic plants, covering a wide range of species, systems and issues. In this paper, we present an overview of current trends and future directions in aquatic plant research in the early twenty first century. Our understanding of aquatic plant biology, the range of scientific issues being addressed and the range of techniques available to researchers have all arguably never been greater; however, substantial challenges exist to the conservation and management of both aquatic plants and the ecosystems in which they are found. The range of countries and continents represented by conference delegates and authors of papers in the special issue illustrates the global relevance of aquatic plant research in the early twenty first century but also the many challenges that this burgeoning scientific discipline must address.

Abstract

International audience; Aim : The success of invasive species in their introduced range is often assumed to result from evolutionary changes in defence and growth traits, or as a response to more favourable conditions. The latter is assumed particularly for species exhibiting low, or even no, sexual reproduction in the introduced range.Location and Methods : Here, we compared Japanese (native range) and French (introduced range) populations of Fallopia japonica under common growth conditions in a glasshouse. We measured height, aboveground and belowground mass, stem stiffness, leaf toughness and secondary metabolites found in hydroalcoholic extracts of rhizomes of F. japonica, as well as the competitive response of Rubus caesius (a co‐occurring native species in the invaded range) in the presence of F. japonica from both ranges.Results : Aboveground biomass, height, stem stiffness and composition of secondary metabolites were not significantly different between the two ranges, showing that increased aboveground vigour observed in situ in France is probably the result of a plastic response following the release of abiotic or biotic constraints from the native range. On the other hand, belowground mass, effect on R. caesius, and leaf toughness were all higher in French populations, suggesting increases in competitive ability and defence mechanisms. These differences between France and Japan may be explained either by post‐introduction evolution or by the introduction in Europe, in nineteenth century, of an exceptionally vigorous clone (pre‐adaptation).Main conclusions : Our results provide evidence that the high vigour of this major invasive species in its introduced range is probably due to both a response to more favourable conditions and rapid evolution.

28. Multiple invasions in urbanized landscapes: interactions between the invasive garden ant Lasius neglectus and Japanese knotweeds (Fallopia spp.)

Abstract

Urbanized landscapes are the theater of multiple simultaneous biological invasions likely to affect spread dynamics when co-occurring introduced species interact with each other. Interactions between widespread invaders call for particular attention because they are likely to be common and because non-additive outcomes of such associations might induce negative consequences (e.g., enhanced population growth increasing impacts or resistance to control). We explored the invasions of two widespread invasive taxa: the Japanese knotweed species complex Fallopia spp. and the invasive garden ant Lasius neglectus, in the urban area of Lyon (France). First, we investigated landscape habitat preferences as well as co-occurrence rates of the two species. We showed that Fallopia spp. and L. neglectus had broadly overlapping environmental preferences (measured by seven landscape variables), but their landscape co-occurrence pattern was random, indicating independent spread and non-obligatory association. Second, as Fallopia spp. produce extra-floral nectar, we estimated the amount of nectar L. neglectus used under field conditions without ant competitors. We estimated that L. neglectus collected 150–321 kg of nectar in the month of April (when nectar production is peaking) in a 1162 m2 knotweed patch, an amount likely to boost ant population growth. Finally, at six patches of Fallopia spp. surveyed, herbivory levels were low (1–6% loss of leaf surface area) but no relationship between ant abundance (native and invasive) and loss of leaf surface was found. Co-occurrences of Fallopia spp. and L. neglectus are likely to become more common as both taxa colonize landscapes, which could favor the spread and invasion success of the invasive ant.

Abstract

Through litter decomposition enormous amounts of carbon is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous large-scale decomposition experiments have been conducted focusing on this fundamental soil process in order to understand the controls on the terrestrial carbon transfer to the atmosphere. However, previous studies were mostly based on site-specific litter and methodologies, adding major uncertainty to syntheses, comparisons and meta-analyses across different experiments and sites. In the TeaComposition initiative, the potential litter decomposition is investigated by using standardized substrates (Rooibos and Green tea) for comparison of litter mass loss at 336 sites (ranging from -9 to +26 °C MAT and from 60 to 3113 mm MAP) across different ecosystems. In this study we tested the effect of climate (temperature and moisture), litter type and land-use on early stage decomposition (3 months) across nine biomes. We show that litter quality was the predominant controlling factor in early stage litter decomposition, which explained about 65% of the variability in litter decomposition at a global scale. Abstract

International audience; Seed and fruit dispersal along watercourses favours the long-distance migration of invasive species, not only for aquatic or wetland species, but also for terrestrial wind- dispersed plants, like the Japanese knotweed. The present paper aims at investigating the role of watercourses in the dispersal of the knotweed due to its frequent occurrence on riverbanks and production of fertile achenes (type of fruit of the Japanese knotweed). This dispersal occurs along two steps after the fruits deposit on the water surface: floatation first and then sinking towards the bottom of the watercourse. Regarding the first step, the effects of agitation of the water, temperature, surface tension and luminosity on the achenes floatability are experimentally studied. While no influence of luminosity is observed, an increase of temperature greatly decreases the floating time. Floating time also decreases as the contact between water and the fruit is enhanced (through submersion of achenes, agitation of the water or lower surface tension). Regarding the second step, the fall velocity of the fruits in water at rest is measured and appears to be independent of the seed history (floating time). 3D helical motions are systematically observed with constant tangential velocity with respect to the falling velocity. The trajectory of the fruits in a shear flow is then measured and the evolution of their velocity components along the sinking process is discussed. Finally, the contribution of both steps to the long-distance migration of the seeds is estimated.

Abstract

Watercourses are powerful vectors of species colonizing riverbanks. The morphological traits of propagules that increase buoyancy can enhance the spread of those species throughout the landscape. The goal of this study was to analyse the water dispersal capabilities of achenes of the morphologically diverse hybrid complex Fallopia x bohemica through the relationship between achene morphology and buoyancy. The achenes of F. x bohemica were collected from 60 stands growing along watercourses in the Rhone-Alpes region (France). Achene buoyancy was measured experimentally using a load cell. The shape of the achenes was quantified by principal component analyses based on elliptic Fourier descriptors of 2D wing shape. A spatial distribution analysis of the stands along different watercourses was performed to determine the relationship between the achene buoyancy and the dispersal potential. Across the 60 studied stands, flotation was positively correlated to the achene wing area. The flotation force, corrected for the achene mass, differed between the F. x bohemica stands sampled and was correlated to achene shape; in particular, the rounded achenes had a higher buoyancy than the elongated ones. Furthermore, the spatial autocorrelation of the flotation force suggested dispersal along rivers. These results highlight the water dispersal potential of the achenes of the Fallopia complex. Even if vegetative dispersal affects dispersal patterns, the morphological variation of achenes leading to different dispersal capabilities should be considered a major evolutionary driver of the complex.

Abstract

International audience; The potential of using the latitudinal distributions of fossil wood genera as a proxy for Jurassic terrestrial climate conditions in western Laurasia was tested using a database of 386 entries. The fossil wood genera Brachyoxylon, Protaxodioxylon and Simplicioxylon are southern taxa, which have only occasionally extended north of 45°N (all latitude references are to palaeolatitudes). Conversely, Protocedroxylon and Xenoxylon are mostly found at high latitudes. The standard deviation of the data on the palaeolatitudes of the northern genera is, however, much larger than that of the southern genera. This is interpreted as resulting from brief periodic southward extensions of the Protocedroxylon and Xenoxylon distributions, while the southern genera remained confined south of 40°N. The interval during which the northern genera replaced the southern genera at mid-latitudes can be hypothesized to be times of global terrestrial climate cooling or increased rainfall. Comparisons between the spatiotemporal distributions of these ‘northern’ taxa and independent climate-sensitive indicators (clay mineral assemblages, oxygen isotopes, and neritic carbonate distribution) suggest that these genera were adapted to more humid conditions characterizing the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Accordingly, southward migrations of this climatic zone occurred during the Early and Late Pliensbachian, Early Toarcian, and Early Middle Oxfordian time intervals. These reconstructions are limited by the low resolution and restricted spatial coverage of the wood record. Therefore, further sampling at the ammonite zone level is needed. Nevertheless, the present study suggests that wood taxa distribution represents an underexploited but potentially powerful record of terrestrial environmental changes during the Jurassic Period.

Abstract

International audience; Aims: Landscape fragmentation has strong negative consequences on biodiversity. In networks of linear elements, connectivity loss results in a decreased length of connected elements and increased potential barriers, directly impacting the ability of plants to disperse. However, species vary in their tolerance to connectivity loss, likely due to differences in dispersal strategies. We investigated whether species tolerance to decreased ditch network connectivity is determined by seed traits. We selected, as a case study, water-dispersed plant species in a ditch network.Location: Ditch network in an intensive agricultural area in northern France.Methods: We selected 27 sites of 500 m 9 500 m, where we calculated connectivity indices based on the length of connected ditches, intersections and culvert number. For each parameter, we calculated plant tolerance levels by analysing species changes in occurrence in response to change in connectivity values. Concurrently, we measured in laboratory conditions five seed traits involved in plant movement and establishment in standing aquatic systems and analysed their explanatory power in plant tolerance to fragmentation.Results: All traits were significantly related to at least one component of ditch network connectivity. We interpreted the following two strategies in plant tolerance to connectivity loss from the results: (1) in networks where the connected network length was short, plants displayed short-distance dispersal with less efficient sexual reproduction, probably in favour of local vegetative multiplication; and (2) in networks with a high density of culverts or intersections, plants displayed seeds with reduced local retention, where seeds had the capacity to overcome long and frequent trapping events. In highly branched networks, plants also exhibited higher germination rates, promoting seed establishment when trapped along the banks. Seed capacity to be dispersed by wind at the water surface was only a marginal factor in plant tolerance to fragmentation.Conclusions: Connectivity loss acted as a filter on species seed traits. The results of our study offer an enhanced understanding of plant dispersal in fragmented standing aquatic networks and emphasize the importance of developing functional approaches in landscape studies.

Abstract

International audience; In a global change context, the intensity and the frequency of drastic low flow periods or drought events will most likely increase to a substantial extent over the coming decades, leading to a modification in the abiotic characteristics of wetlands. This change in environmental parameters may induce severe shifts in plant and animal communities and the functioning of ecosystems. In this study, we experimentally estimated the effect of drought and the accumu- lation of ammonia (NH3) on the feeding activities of three generalist macroinvertebrates (i.e. Gammarus pulex, Gamma- rus roeselii and Asellus aquaticus) on three types of organic matter: leaves of Berula erecta growing in submerged conditions, leaves of the same species growing in emerged conditions and dead leaves of Alnus glutinosa. We observed a modification in the biomechanical and stoichiometric characteristics of the plants as a result of the emer- sion of the aquatic plants. This shift produced a substantial decrease in organic matter recycling by invertebrates and in their associated physiological ability (i.e. the energy stores of the animals) to face conditions associated with envi- ronmental change. Moreover, the accumulation of NH3 amplified the negative effect of emersion. This snowball effect on invertebrates may profoundly modify the functioning of ecosystems, particularly in terms of organic matter pro- duction/degradation and carbon mineralization.

Abstract

International audience; Climate change will likely affect riparian litter decomposition in freshwater streams in future decades by modifications in both microorganism and invertebrate activities. On the one hand, the expected increase in C:N ratio will decrease the palatability of leaf litter, and consequently slow down decomposition rates of leaves. On the other hand, rising temperatures may stimulate litter decomposition.We conducted a feeding study that associated the key shredder species Gammarus pulex (Crustacea, Amphipoda) with common riparian leaf litter (from the tree Alnus glutinosa) from European freshwater streams. We assessed the effects of temperature on i) changes in leaf palatability during conditioning (microbial colonisation), ii) leaf consumption rates, and iii) leaf digestion by shredders. Moreover, we compared the responses to rising temperatures between two populations of G. pulex, living in contrasting thermal environments (humid continental climate vs. temperate Mediterranean climate).We found that the decreased mechanical resistance of leaf tissue, which was induced by the conditioning, was stimulated by an increase in temperature. However, we found no increase in fungal biomass even at the highest temperatures (21 and 24 degrees C). The leaf consumption rate by amphipods increased slightly but not linearly with rising temperatures. Moreover, digestive enzyme activities in amphipod guts were clearly favoured by an increase in water temperature. Catalytic activities of digestive enzymes were generally higher for amphipods living under continental climate conditions.Our study supported the idea that the effect of rising temperatures on the leaf litter decomposition would not be unidirectional. Higher temperatures would lead to contrasting impacts on both physiology and ecology of organisms involved in this functional process.

Abstract

The interaction between macrophytes and hydrodynamic conditions is an important feature in many aquatic ecosystems. Submerged macrophytes can form monospecific patches that interact with the flow and alter current velocity; within the same vegetation patch, plants are exposed to different levels of hydrodynamic stress. Due to the high morphological variability of aquatic plants, we expect different architectural and morphological traits to emerge for individuals located at different positions within the same patch. In this study, we have measured the flow velocity around a patch of Veronica anagallis-aquatica in submerged conditions and measured the morphological traits of individuals along a gradient of exposure to flow velocity within the patch. Results show that the more exposed individuals present smaller sizes than the sheltered ones, lower relative allocation to stems, higher allocation to roots and reduced water content in roots and stems. The knowledge obtained helps to clarify the role of morphological adaptations to flow stress in the context of plant-flow interactions.

Abstract

Tidal marshes are increasingly valued for protecting shorelines against wave impact, but waves in turn may limit the initial establishment of tidal marsh pioneer plants. In estuaries, the shorelines typically experience a wide range of wave periods, varying from short period wind waves (usually of around 1–2 s in fair weather conditions) to long ship-generated waves, with secondary waves in the order of 2–7 s and primary waves with periods that can exceed 1 min. Waves are known to create sediment scour around, as well as to exert drag forces on obstacles such as seedlings and adults of establishing pioneer plant species. In intertidal systems, these two mechanisms have been identified as main causes for limiting potential colonization of bare tidal flats. In this paper, we want to assess to which extent common quantitative formulae for predicting local scour and drag forces on rigid cylindrical obstacles are valid for the estimation of scour and drag on slightly flexible plants with contrasting morphology, and hence applicable to predict plant establishment and survival under contrasting wave conditions. This has been tested in a full-scale wave flume experiment on two pioneer species (Scirpus maritimus and Scirpus tabernaemontani) and two life stages (seedlings and adults of S. maritimus) as well as on cylindrical reference sticks, which we have put under a range of wave periods (2–10 s), intended to mimic natural wind waves (short period waves) and ship-induced waves (artificial long period waves), at three water levels (5, 20, 35 cm). Our findings suggest that at very shallow water depths (5 cm) particular hydrodynamic conditions are created that lead to drag and scour that deviate from predictions. For higher water levels (20, 35 cm) scour can be well predicted for all wave conditions by an established formula for wave-induced scour around rigid cylinders. Drag forces can be relatively well predicted after introducing experimentally derived drag coefficients that are specific for the different plant morphologies. Best predictions were found for plants with a simple near-cylindrical morphology such as S. tabernaemontani, but are less accurate for plants of more complex structure such as S. maritimus, particularly for long period waves. In conclusion, our study offers valuable insights towards predicting/modelling the conditions under which seedlings and shoots of pioneer species can establish, and elucidates that long waves are more likely to counteract successful plant establishment than natural short waves.

Abstract

In lotic ecosystems, submerged aquatic vegetation has important effects on hydrodynamic and sediment processes. These effects depend on plant morphology and patch structure. This study aimed to test the effect of 2 aquatic plant species on flow and sediment characteristics. For this purpose we measured under natural conditions 3D velocity profiles and sediment characteristics along the main axis of one patch of each species. The 2 species presented contrasting effects on velocity, turbulence profiles and sediment characteristics: one species had significant effects on hydrodynamics and accumulation of fine sediment also further downstream of the patch, whereas the second one accumulated very fine sediment mainly in the upstream half of the patch. These results emphasize the role of plant morphology on hydrodynamics and sediment physic-chemical characteristics.

International audience; The plasticity in clonal architecture may enable plants to effectively respond to environmental constraints and to enhance species ecological niche breadth but its role in plant tolerance to water flow is poorly documented. The present study was carried out to determine whether the clonal architecture varies with respect to water flow in 10 species of the genus Potamogeton colonizing habitats differing by flow conditions. For these 10 species, the traits describing clonal architecture were measured on individuals sampled in natural sites and plasticity in clonal architecture was examined in a common garden growth experiment. The clonal growth architecture did not vary significantly in the species which inhabit either standing (P. lucens, P. natans, and P. pusillus) or running water (P. amblyphyllus and P. berchtoldii). However, the species inhabiting both standing as well as running waters (P. crispus, P. nodosus, P. pectina- tus, P. perfoliatus, and P. wrightii) showed consider- able and significant variation in clonal growth architecture across these habitats. Transplantation experiment revealed that clonal architecture observed between the plants under different conditions is plastic and not due to genetic differentiation. The present study demonstrated that plasticity in the clonal architecture may enable these species to inhabit stressful conditions of flowing water.

Abstract

In most aquatic ecosystems, hydrodynamic conditions are a key abiotic factor determining species distributions and abundance of aquatic plants. Resisting stress and keeping an upright position often relies on investment in tissue reinforcement, which is costly to produce. Silica could provide a more economical alternative. Two laboratory experiments were conducted to measure the response of two submerged species, Egeria densa Planch. and Limnophila heterophylla (Roxb.) Benth., to dissolved silicic acid availability and exposure to hydrodynamic stress. The results were verified with a third species in a field study (Nuphar lutea (L.) Smith). Biogenic silica (BSi) concentration in both stems and leaves increases with increasing dissolved silica availability but also with the presence of hydrodynamic stress. We suggest that the inclusion of extra silica enables the plant to alternatively invest its energy in the production of lignin and cellulose. Although we found no significant effects of hydrodynamic stress on cellulose or lignin concentrations either in the laboratory or in the field, BSi was negatively correlated with cellulose concentration and positively correlated with lignin concentration in samples collected in the field study. This implies that the plant might perform with equal energy efficiency in both standing and running water environments. This could provide submerged species with a tool to respond to abiotic factors, to adapt to new ecological conditions and hence potentially colonise new environments.

Abstract

International audience; External mechanical forces resulting from the pressure exerted by wind or water movement are a major stress factor for plants and may cause regular disturbances in many ecosystems. A plant's ability to resist these forces relies either on minimizing the forces encountered by the plant (avoidance strategy), or on maximizing its resistance to breakage (tolerance strategy). We investigated plant resistance strategies using aquatic vegetation as a model, and examined whether avoidance and tolerance are negatively correlated. We tested the avoidance-tolerance correlation across 28 species using a phylogenetically corrected analysis, after construction of a molecular phylogeny for the species considered. Different species demonstrated contrasting avoidance and tolerance and we demonstrated a significant negative relationship between the two strategies, which suggests an avoidance-tolerance trade-off. Negative relationships may result from costs that each strategy incurs or from constraints imposed by physical laws on plant tissues. The existence of such a trade-off has important ecological and evolutionary consequences. It would lead to constraints on the evolution and variation of both strategies, possibly limiting their evolution and may constrain many morphological, anatomical and architectural traits that underlie avoidance and tolerance.

Abstract

Clonal architecture may enable plants to effectively respond to environmental constraints but its role in plant tolerance to defoliation remains poorly documented. In several non-clonal species, modifications of plant architecture have been reported as a mechanism of plant tolerance to defoliation, yet this has been little studied in clonal plants. In a glasshouse experiment, five rhizomatous and five stoloniferous species of grazed pastures were subjected to three frequencies of defoliation in order to test two hypotheses. (1) We expected plant clonal response to defoliation to be either a more compact architecture (low clonal propagation, but high branching), or a more dispersed one (long-distance propagation and low branching). Such plastic adjustments of clonal architecture were assumed to be involved in tolerance to defoliation i.e. to promote genet performance in terms of biomass and number of ramets. (2) The response of clonal architecture to defoliation was expected to be dependent on the species and to be more plastic in stoloniferous than in rhizomatous species. Most genets of each species were tolerant to defoliation as they survived and developed in every treatment. Architectural modifications in response to defoliation did not match our predictions. Clonal growth was either maintained or reduced under defoliation. Relative growth rate (RGR) decreased in eight species, whereas defoliated genets of seven species produced as many ramets as control genets. Biomass allocation to ramet shoots remained stable for all but one species. In defoliated genets, the number and mean length of connections, and mean inter-ramet distance were equal to or lower than those in control genets. Four groups of species were distinguished according to their architectural response to defoliation and did not depend on the type of connections. We hypothesised that dense clonal architectures with low plasticity may be the most advantageous response in defoliated conditions such as in grazed pastures.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The plastic alterations of clonal architecture are likely to have functional consequences, as they affect the spatial distribution of ramets over patchy environments. However, little is known about the effect of mechanical stresses on the clonal growth. The aim of the present study was to investigate the clonal plasticity induced by mechanical stress consisting of continuous water current encountered by aquatic plants. More particularly, the aim was to test the capacity of the plants to escape this stress through clonal plastic responses. Methods: The transplantation of ramets of the same clone in two contrasting flow velocity conditions was carried out for two species (Potamogeton coloratus and Mentha aquatica) which have contrasting clonal growth forms. Relative allocation to clonal growth, to creeping stems in the clonal biomass, number and total length of creeping stems, spacer length and main creeping stem direction were measured. Key Results: For P. coloratus, plants exposed to water current displayed increased total length of creeping stems, increased relative allocation to creeping stems within the clonal dry mass and increased spacer length. For M. aquatica, plants exposed to current displayed increased number and total length of creeping stems. Exposure to current induced for both species a significant increase of the proportion of creeping stems in the downstream direction to the detriment of creeping stems perpendi Conclusions: This study demonstrates that mechanical stress from current flow induced plastic variation in clonal traits for both species. The responses of P. coloratus could lead to an escape strategy, with low benefits with respect to sheltering and anchorage. The responses of M. aquatica that may result in a denser canopy and enhancement of anchorage efficiency could lead to a resistance strategy.

Abstract

International audience; The response of aquatic plants to abiotic factors is a crucial study topic, because the diversity of aquatic vegetation is strongly related to specific adaptations to a variety of environments. This biodiversity ensures resilience of aquatic communities to new and changing ecological conditions. In running water, hydrodynamic disturbance is one of the key factors in this context. While plant adaptations to resource stress (nutrients, light...) are well documented, adaptations to mechanical stress, particularly flow, are largely unknown. The submerged species Egeria densa was used in an experiment to detect whether the presence or absence of hydrodynamic stress causes plant thigmomorphogenetic responses (i) in terms of plant biogenic silica (BSi), cellulose and lignin concentrations, and (ii) in terms of plant strength. Plant silica concentrations, as well as lignin concentrations were significantly higher in presence of hydrodynamic stress. These physiological changes are accompanied by some significant changes in stem biomechanical traits: stem resistance to tensile forces (breaking force and breaking strength) and stiffness were higher for plants exposed to hydrodynamic stress. We conclude that the response of this aquatic plant species to mechanical stress is likely the explaining factor for a higher capacity to tolerate stress through the production of mechanically hardened shoots.

Abstract

International audience; Biological invasions have become a major global issue in ecosystem conservation. As formalized in the "novel weapon hypothesis", the allelopathic abilities of species are actively involved in invasion success. Here, we assume that allelopathy can also increase the biotic resistance of native species against invasion. We tested this hypothesis by studying the impact of the native species Sambucus ebulus on the colonization of propagules of the invasive species Fallopia x bohemica and the subsequent development of plants from these. Achenes and rhizome fragments from two natural populations were grown in a greenhouse experiment for 50days. We used an experimental design that involved "donor" and "target" pots in order to separate resource competition from allelopathy. An allelopathic treatment effect was observed for plant growth but not for propagule establishment. Treatment affected, in particular, the growth of Fallopia plants originating from achenes, but there was less influence on plants originating from rhizomes. By day 50, shoot height had decreased by 27% for plants originating from rhizomes and by 38% for plants originating from achenes. The number of leaves for plants originating from achenes had only decreased by 20%. Leaf and above- and below-ground dry masses decreased with treatment by 40, 41 and 25% for plants originating from rhizomes and 70, 61 and 55% for plants originating from achenes, respectively. S. ebulus extracts were analysed using high-performance chromatography, and the choice of test molecules was narrowed down. Our results suggest native species use allelopathy as a biotic containment mechanism against the naturalization of invasive species.

Abstract

International audience; Due to global change, many wetlands experience water level decreases and changes in their hydrological func- tioning, modifying their physico-chemical characteristics. Riverine wetlands are particularly complex within this frame- work because they are supplied by different water sources. This study assessed how long-term water level decreases in riverine wetlands relate to changes in their physico-chemical characteristics (temperature, oxygen, pH, conductivity and nutrient contents: nitrate, ammonium and phosphate). We hy- pothesized that 1) water level decreases have no effect on water nutrient contents because of the high water renewal by groundwater supplies, which may leach nutrients released from the sediment after the dewatering phase, and 2) the physico-chemical characteristics of the water would become increasingly similar to those of hillslope groundwater due to the increase in their water supplies in wetlands. We compared the surface water physico-chemical characteristics of nine riv- erine wetlands with contrasting water level decreases between 1993 and 2011. No increase in water nutrient contents oc- curred. However, depending on the wetland considered, the physico-chemical changes suggested either 1) increased con- nectivity with hillslope groundwater, 2) a lower rate of water renewal in wetlands or 3) increased river water supplies, po- tentially related to river lateral migration toward wetlands.

Abstract

International audience; Recent research indicates that many ecosystems, including intertidal marshes, follow the alternative stable states theory. This theory implies that thresholds of environmental factors can mark a limit between two opposing stable ecosystem states, e.g. vegetated marshes and bare mudflats. While elevation relative to mean sea level is considered as the overall threshold condition for colonization of mudflats by vegetation, little is known about the indi- vidual driving mechanisms, in particular the impact of waves, and more specifically of wave period. We studied the impact of different wave regimes on plants in a full scale flume exper- iment. Seedlings and adult shoots of the pioneer Scirpus maritimus were subjected to two wave periods at two water levels. Drag forces acting on, and sediment scouring occurring around the plants were quantified, as these are the two main mechanisms determining plant establishment and survival. Depending on life stage, two distinct survival strategies emerge: seedlings present a stress avoidance strategy by being extremely flexible, thus lim- iting the drag forces and thereby the risk of breaking. Adult shoots present a stress toler- ance strategy by having stiffer stems, which gives them a higher resistance to breaking. These strategies work well under natural, short period wind wave conditions. For long peri- od waves, however, caused e.g. by ships, these survival strategies have a high chance to fail as the flexibility of seedlings and stiffness of adults lead to plant tissue failure and ex- treme drag forces respectively. This results in both cases in strongly bent plant stems, po- tentially limiting their survival.

Abstract

International audience; In hydrodynamically stressful environments, some species—known as ecosystem engi- neers—are able to modify the environment for their own benefit. Little is known however, about the interaction between functional plant traits and ecosystem engineering. We stud- ied the responses of Scirpus tabernaemontani and Scirpus maritimus to wave impact in full- scale flume experiments. Stem density and biomass were used to predict the ecosystem engineering effect of wave attenuation. Also the drag force on plants, their bending angle after wave impact and the stem biomechanical properties were quantified as both responses of stress experienced and effects on ecosystem engineering. We analyzed lig- nin, cellulose, and silica contents as traits likely effecting stress resistance (avoidance, tol- erance). Stem density and biomass were strong predictors for wave attenuation, S. maritimus showing a higher effect than S. tabernaemontani. The drag force and drag force per wet frontal area both differed significantly between the species at shallow water depths (20 cm). At greater depths (35 cm), drag forces and bending angles were significantly higher for S. maritimus than for S. tabernaemontani. However, they do not differ in drag force per wet frontal area due to the larger plant surface of S. maritimus. Stem resistance to breaking and stem flexibility were significantly higher in S. tabernaemontani, having a higher cellu- lose concentration and a larger cross-section in its basal stem parts. S. maritimus had clearly more lignin and silica contents in the basal stem parts than S. tabernaemontani. We concluded that the effect of biomass seems more relevant for the engineering effect of emergent macrophytes with leaves than species morphology: S. tabernaemontani has avoiding traits with minor effects on wave attenuation; S. maritimus has tolerating traits with larger effects. This implies that ecosystem engineering effects are directly linked with traits affecting species stress resistance and responding to stress experienced.

Abstract

10 pages; Sessile organisms often exhibit morphological changes in response to permanent exposure to mechanical stimulation (wind or water movements). The adaptive value of these morphological changes (hydrodynamic performance and consequences on fitness) has not been studied extensively, particularly for higher plants submitted to flow stress. The aim was to determine the adaptive value of morphological patterns observed within two higher aquatic plant species, Berula erecta and Mentha aquatica, growing along a natural flow stress gradient. The hydrodynamic ability of each ramet was investigated through quantitative variables (drag coefficient and E-value). Fitness-related traits based on vegetative growth and clonal multiplication were assessed for each individual. For both species, the drag coefficient and the E-value were explained only to a limited extent by the morphological traits used. B. erecta exhibited a reduction in size and low overall plant drag at higher flow velocities, despite high drag values relative to leaf area, due to a low flexibility. The plants maintained their fitness, at least in part, through biomass reallocation: one tall ramet at low velocity, but shorter individuals with many interconnected stolons when flow velocity increased. For M. aquatica, morphological differences along the velocity gradient did not lead to greater hydrodynamic performance. Plant size increased with increasing velocities, suggesting the indirect effects of current favouring growth in high velocities. The fitness-related traits did not demonstrate lower plant fitness for high velocities. Different developmental constraints linked to plant morphology and trade-offs between major plant functions probably lead to different plant responses to flow stress.

Abstract

Summary • The similarity of morphological plastic response to physical stress has been poorly tested among distant plant taxons as yet. • The effect of flow stress was compared for two species ‐ Berula erecta and Mentha aquatica ‐ through 14 morphological traits measured for five sets of 30 individuals in five patches organised along a natural velocity gradient. Size-dependent and size-corrected traits were analysed by single correlations and multivariate analyses. • B. erecta exhibited the expected pattern, that is a sharp decrease of all but one size-dependent trait as velocity increased. Five and four size-corrected traits were correlated with velocity, for B. erecta and M. aquatica , respectively, but three of them showed an opposite trend for the two species. Within-patch trait variability, as hypothesized, tended to decrease with velocity for B. erecta . • The two species exhibited partly opposite responses despite the involvement of common traits. Small size allowed B. erecta to escape flow stress, whereas M. aquatica acquired a more streamlined morphology. The adaptive value of these morphological adjustments should be assessed through drag measurements.
