We present an analysis of the instantaneous supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion rates in a collection of 1563 post-merger galaxies drawn from the IllustrisTNG simulation. Our sample consists of galaxies that have experienced a merger in the last simulation snapshot (within ~160 Myrs of coalescence) in the redshift range 01:10 and post-merger stellar masses > $10^{10} M_{\odot}$. We find that, on average, the accretion rates of the post-mergers are ~1.7 times higher than in a control sample and that post-mergers are 3-4 times more likely to experience a luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) phase than isolated galaxies. SMBH accretion rate enhancements persist for ~2 Gyrs after coalescence, significantly exceeding the ~500 Myr lifetime of star formation rate enhancements. We find that the presence of simultaneous enhancements in both the star formation and SMBH accretion rates depends on both the mass ratio of the merger and on the gas mass of the post-merger galaxy. Despite these accretion rate enhancements, only ~35% of post-mergers experience a luminous AGN ($L_{bol}>10^{44}$ erg/s) within 500 Myrs after coalescence, and fewer than 10\% achieve a luminosity in excess of $L_{bol}>10^{45}$ erg/s. Moreover, only ~10\% of the highest luminosity ($L_{bol}>10^{45}$ erg/s) AGN in the IllustrisTNG galaxy sample are recent mergers. Our results are therefore consistent with a picture in which mergers can (but don't always) trigger AGN activity, but where the majority of galaxies hosting high luminosity AGN are not recent mergers., Comment: This article has been accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Galaxy mergers trigger both star formation and accretion onto the central supermassive black hole. As a result of subsequent energetic feedback processes, it has long been proposed that star formation may be promptly extinguished in galaxy merger remnants. However, this prediction of widespread, rapid quenching in late stage mergers has been recently called into question with modern simulations and has never been tested observationally. Here we perform the first empirical assessment of the long-predicted end phase in the merger sequence. Based on a sample of ~500 post-mergers identified from the Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS), we show that the frequency of post-merger galaxies that have rapidly shutdown their star formation following a previous starburst is 30-60 times higher than expected from a control sample of non-merging galaxies. No such excess is found in a sample of close galaxy pairs, demonstrating that mergers can indeed lead to a rapid halt to star formation, but that this process only manifests after coalescence., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

The importance of the post-merger epoch in galaxy evolution has been well-documented, but post-mergers are notoriously difficult to identify. While the features induced by mergers can sometimes be distinctive, they are frequently missed by visual inspection. In addition, visual classification efforts are highly inefficient because of the inherent rarity of post-mergers (~1% in the low-redshift Universe), and non-parametric statistical merger selection methods do not account for the diversity of post-mergers or the environments in which they appear. To address these issues, we deploy a convolutional neural network (CNN) which has been trained and evaluated on realistic mock observations of simulated galaxies from the IllustrisTNG simulations, to galaxy images from the Canada France Imaging Survey (CFIS), which is part of the Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS). We present the characteristics of the galaxies with the highest CNN-predicted post-merger certainties, as well as a visually confirmed subset of 699 post-mergers. We find that post-mergers with high CNN merger probabilities (p(x)>0.8) have an average star formation rate that is 0.1 dex higher than a mass- and redshift-matched control sample. We study interacting galaxy pairs in the TNG100-1 and TNG300-1 cosmological simulations using previously generated closest companion samples. We study the specific star formation rates (sSFR) of massive ($10^{10} M_{\odot} < M_* < 10^{12} M_{\odot}$) galaxies at $z \leq 0.2$ as a function of separation from the closest companion galaxy. We split our sample based on whether the companion galaxy is star-forming or passive. We find that galaxies with close star-forming companions have sSFRs that are enhanced (on average) by a factor of $2.9 \pm 0.3$ in TNG100-1 and $2.27 \pm 0.06$ in TNG300-1 compared to controls, with enhancements present out to separations of $\sim 300$ kpc. Galaxies with passive companions in TNG300-1 exhibit mild sSFR suppression ($\sim12$ percent) at 100-300 kpc and small sSFR enhancements at separations below 50 kpc. sSFR suppression is strongest in pairs where the galaxy's stellar mass is more than 2 times that of its passive companion. By generating a stellar mass-matched ("twinned") sample in TNG300-1, we show that differences in sSFR trends between companion types are not a result of intrinsic stellar mass differences in star-forming vs. passive galaxies. We compare with an analogous sample of galaxy pairs from SDSS, finding consistent results between observations and simulations. Overall, we find that star-forming galaxies show enhanced sSFRs regardless of companion type, but that galaxies with close passive companions are more likely to be passive themselves., 16 pages, 12 figures. The timescales for galaxy quenching offer clues to its underlying physical drivers. We investigate central galaxy quenching timescales in the IllustrisTNG 100-1 simulation, their evolution over time, and the pre-quenching properties of galaxies that predict their quenching timescales. Defining quenching duration $\tau_q$ as the time between crossing sSFR thresholds, we find that $\sim$40% of galaxies quench rapidly with $\tau_q$1 Gyr) were more massive, had more massive black holes, had larger stellar radii and accreted gas with higher specific angular momentum (AM) prior to quenching. These properties evolve little by $z=0$, except for the accreting gas AM for fast quenchers, which reaches the same high AM as the gas in slow quenchers. By $z=0$, slow quenchers also have residual star formation in extended gas rings. Using the expected relationship between stellar age gradient and $\tau_q$ for inside-out quenching we find agreement with MaNGA IFU observations. The quenching of cluster satellite galaxies is inextricably linked to the suppression of their cold interstellar medium (ISM) by environmental mechanisms. While the removal of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) at large radii is well studied, how the environment impacts the remaining gas in the centres of galaxies, which are dominated by molecular gas, is less clear. Using new observations from the Virgo Environment traced in CO survey (VERTICO) and archival HI data, we study the HI and molecular gas within the optical discs of Virgo cluster galaxies on 1.2-kpc scales with spatially resolved scaling relations between stellar (${\Sigma}_{\star}$), HI (${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$), and molecular gas (${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$) surface densities. Adopting HI deficiency as a measure of environmental impact, we find evidence that, in addition to removing the HI at large radii, the cluster processes also lower the average ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ of the remaining gas even in the central 1.2 kpc. The impact on molecular gas is comparatively weaker than on the HI, and we show that the lower ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ gas is removed first. In the most HI-deficient galaxies, however, we find evidence that environmental processes reduce the typical ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ of the remaining gas by nearly a factor of 3. We find no evidence for environment-driven elevation of ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ or ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ in HI-deficient galaxies. Using the ratio of ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$-to-${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ in individual regions, we show that changes in the ISM physical conditions, estimated using the total gas surface density and midplane hydrostatic pressure, cannot explain the observed reduction in molecular gas content. One of the central challenges to establishing the role of mergers in galaxy evolution is the selection of pure and complete merger samples in observations. In particular, while large and reasonably pure interacting galaxy pair samples can be obtained with relative ease via spectroscopic criteria, automated selection of post-coalescence merger remnants is restricted to the physical characteristics of remnants alone. Furthermore, such selection has predominantly focused on imaging data -- whereas kinematic data may offer a complimentary basis for identifying merger remnants. Therefore, we examine the theoretical utility of both the morphological and kinematic features of merger remnants in distinguishing galaxy merger remnants from other galaxies. Deep classification models are calibrated and evaluated using idealized synthetic images and line-of-sight stellar velocity maps of a heterogeneous population of galaxies and merger remnants from the TNG100 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We show that even idealized stellar kinematic data has limited utility compared to imaging and under-performs by $2.1\%\pm0.5\%$ in completeness and $4.7\%\pm0.4\%$ in purity for our fiducial model architecture. Combining imaging and stellar kinematics offers a small boost in completeness (by $1.8\%\pm0.4\%$, compared to $92.7\%\pm0.2\%$ from imaging alone) but no change in purity ($0.1\%\pm0.3\%$ improvement compared to $92.7\%\pm0.2\%$, evaluated with equal numbers of merger remnant and non-remnant control galaxies). Classification accuracy of all models is particularly sensitive to physical companions at separations $\lesssim40$ kpc and to time-since-coalescence. With MaNGA integral field spectroscopy, we present a resolved analysis of star formation for 29 jellyfish galaxies in nearby clusters, identified from radio continuum imaging taken by the Low Frequency Array. Simulations predict enhanced star formation on the "leading half" of galaxies undergoing ram pressure stripping, and in this work we report observational evidence for this elevated star formation. The dividing line (through the galaxy center) that maximizes this star formation enhancement is systematically tied to the observed direction of the ram pressure stripped tail, suggesting a physical connection between ram pressure and this star formation enhancement. We also present a case study on the distribution of molecular gas in one jellyfish galaxy from our sample, IC3949, using ALMA CO J=1-0, HCN J=1-0, and HCO$^+$ J=1-0 observations from the ALMaQUEST survey. The $\mathrm{H_2}$ depletion time (as traced by CO) in IC3949 ranges from $\sim\!1\,\mathrm{Gyr}$ in the outskirts of the molecular gas disk to $\sim\!11\,\mathrm{Gyr}$ near the galaxy center. IC3949 shows a clear region of enhanced star formation on the leading half of the galaxy where the average depletion time is $\sim\!2.7\,\mathrm{Gyr}$, in line with the median value for the galaxy on the whole. Dense gas tracers, HCN and HCO$^+$, are only detected at the galaxy center and on the leading half of IC3949. Our results favour a scenario in which ram pressure compresses the interstellar medium, promoting the formation of molecular gas that in turn fuels a localized increase of star formation., 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Galaxy mergers are known to trigger both extended and central star formation. However, what remains to be understood is whether this triggered star formation is facilitated by enhanced star formation efficiencies, or an abundance of molecular gas fuel. This work presents spatially resolved measurements of CO emission collected with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) for 20 merging galaxies (either pairs or post-mergers) selected from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. Eleven additional merging galaxies are selected from the ALMA MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) survey, resulting in a set of 31 mergers at various stages of interaction and covering a broad range of star formation rates (SFR). We investigate galaxy-to-galaxy variations in the resolved Kennicutt-Schmidt relation (rKS: $\Sigma_{H_2}$ vs. $\Sigma_{SFR}$), the resolved molecular gas main sequence (rMGMS: $\Sigma_{\star}$ vs. $\Sigma_{H_2}$), and the resolved star-forming main sequence (rSFMS: $\Sigma_{\star}$ vs. $\Sigma_{SFR}$). We quantify offsets from these resolved relations to determine if star formation rate, molecular gas fraction, and/or star formation efficiency (SFE) is enhanced in different regions of an individual galaxy. By comparing offsets in all three parameters we can discern whether gas fraction or SFE powers an enhanced $\Sigma_{SFR}$. We find that merger-induced star formation can be driven by a variety of mechanisms, both within a galaxy and between different mergers, regardless of interaction stage., Comment: 28 pages, 28 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) will consist of deep, high-resolution r-band imaging over ~5000 square degrees of the sky, representing a first-rate opportunity to identify recently-merged galaxies. Due to the large number of galaxies in CFIS, we investigate the use of a convolutional neural network (CNN) for automated merger classification. Training samples of post-merger and isolated galaxy images are generated from the IllustrisTNG simulation processed with the observational realism code RealSim. The CNN's overall classification accuracy is 88 percent, remaining stable over a wide range of intrinsic and environmental parameters. We generate a mock galaxy survey from IllustrisTNG in order to explore the expected purity of post-merger samples identified by the CNN. Despite the CNN's good performance in training, the intrinsic rarity of post-mergers leads to a sample that is only ~6 percent pure when the default decision threshold is used. We investigate trade-offs in purity and completeness with a variable decision threshold and find that we recover the statistical distribution of merger-induced star formation rate enhancements. Finally, the performance of the CNN is compared with both traditional automated methods and human classifiers. The CNN is shown to outperform Gini-M20 and asymmetry methods by an order of magnitude in post-merger sample purity on the mock survey data. Although the CNN outperforms the human classifiers on sample completeness, the purity of the post-merger sample identified by humans is frequently higher, indicating that a hybrid approach to classifications may be an effective solution to merger classifications in large surveys., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate how star formation quenching proceeds within central and satellite galaxies using spatially resolved spectroscopy from the SDSS-IV MaNGA DR15. We adopt a complete sample of star formation rate surface densities ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), derived in Bluck et al. (2020), to compute the distance at which each spaxel resides from the resolved star forming main sequence ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR} - \Sigma_*$ relation): $\Delta \Sigma_{\rm SFR}$. We study galaxy radial profiles in $\Delta \Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, and luminosity weighted stellar age (${\rm Age_L}$), split by a variety of intrinsic and environmental parameters. Via several statistical analyses, we establish that the quenching of central galaxies is governed by intrinsic parameters, with central velocity dispersion ($\sigma_c$) being the most important single parameter. High mass satellites quench in a very similar manner to centrals. Conversely, low mass satellite quenching is governed primarily by environmental parameters, with local galaxy over-density ($\delta_5$) being the most important single parameter. Utilising the empirical $M_{BH}$ - $\sigma_c$ relation, we estimate that quenching via AGN feedback must occur at $M_{BH} \geq 10^{6.5-7.5} M_{\odot}$, and is marked by steeply rising $\Delta \Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ radial profiles in the green valley, indicating `inside-out' quenching. On the other hand, environmental quenching occurs at over-densities of 10 - 30 times the average galaxy density at z$\sim$0.1, and is marked by steeply declining $\Delta \Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ profiles, indicating `outside-in' quenching. Finally, through an analysis of stellar metallicities, we conclude that both intrinsic and environmental quenching must incorporate significant starvation of gas supply., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 40 pages; 24 figures

We have used the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope to search for intervening 21 cm neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption along the line of sight to 53 bright radio continuum sources. Our observations are sensitive to HI column densities typical of Damped Lyman Alpha absorbers (DLAs) in cool gas with an HI spin temperature below about 300-500 K. The six-dish Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA) and twelve-antenna Early Science array (ASKAP-12) covered a frequency range corresponding to redshift $0.4, Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures. Galaxy mergers are predicted to trigger accretion on to the central supermassive black holes, with the highest rates occurring during final coalescence. Previously, we have shown elevated rates of both optical and mid-IR selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in post-mergers, but to date the prevalence of X-ray AGNs has not been examined in the same systematic way. We present XMM–Newton data of 43 post-merger galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey along with 430 non-interacting control galaxies matched in stellar mass, redshift, and environment in order to test for an excess of hard X-ray (2–10 keV) emission in post-mergers attributable to triggered AGNs. We find two X-ray detections in the post-mergers ($4.7^{+9.3}_{-3.8}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) and nine in the controls ($2.1^{+1.5}_{-1.0}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$), an excess of $2.22^{+4.44}_{-2.22}$, where the confidence intervals are 90 per cent. While, we therefore do not find statistically significant evidence for an X-ray AGN excess in post-mergers (p = 0.26), we find a factor of ∼17 excess of mid-IR AGNs in our sample, consistent with the past work and inconsistent with the observed X-ray excess (p = 2.7 × 10−4). Dominant, luminous AGNs are therefore more frequent in post-mergers, and the lack of a comparable excess of 2–10 keV X-ray AGNs suggests that AGNs in post-mergers are more likely to be heavily obscured. Our results are consistent with the post-merger stage being characterized by enhanced AGN fueling, heavy AGN obscuration, and more intrinsically luminous AGN, in line with theoretical predictions.

We present early science results from the First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH), a spectroscopically blind survey for 21-cm absorption lines in cold hydrogen HI gas at cosmological distances using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). We have searched for HI absorption towards 1253 radio sources in the GAMA 23 field, covering redshifts between $z = 0.34$ and $0.79$ over a sky area of approximately 50 deg$^{2}$. In a purely blind search we did not obtain any detections of 21-cm absorbers above our reliability threshold. Assuming a fiducial value for the HI spin temperature of $T_{\rm spin}$ = 100 K and source covering fraction $c_{\rm f} = 1$, the total comoving absorption path length sensitive to all Damped Lyman $\alpha$ Absorbers (DLAs; $N_{\rm HI} \geq 2 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$) is $\Delta{X} = 6.6 \pm 0.3$ ($\Delta{z} = 3.7 \pm 0.2$) and super-DLAs ($N_{\rm HI} \geq 2 \times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) is $\Delta{X} = 111 \pm 6$ ($\Delta{z} = 63 \pm 3$). We estimate upper limits on the HI column density frequency distribution function that are consistent with measurements from prior surveys for redshifted optical DLAs, and nearby 21-cm emission and absorption. By cross matching our sample of radio sources with optical spectroscopic identifications of galaxies in the GAMA 23 field, we were able to detect 21-cm absorption at $z = 0.3562$ towards NVSS J224500$-$343030, with a column density of $N_{\rm HI} = (1.2 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{20} (T_{\rm spin}/100~\mathrm{K})$ cm$^{-2}$. The absorber is associated with GAMA J22450.05$-$343031.7, a massive early-type galaxy at an impact parameter of 17 kpc with respect to the radio source and which may contain a massive ($M_{\rm HI} \gtrsim 3 \times 10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$) gas disc. The correlation between galaxies' integrated stellar masses and star formation rates (the `star formation main sequence'; SFMS) is a well-established scaling relation. Recently, surveys have found a relationship between the star formation rate and stellar mass surface densities on kpc and sub-kpc scales (the `resolved SFMS'; rSFMS). In this work, we demonstrate that the rSFMS emerges naturally in FIRE-2 zoom-in simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies. We make SFR and stellar mass maps of the simulated galaxies at a variety of spatial resolutions and star formation averaging time-scales and fit the rSFMS using multiple methods from the literature. While the absolute value of the SFMS slope depends on the fitting method, the slope is steeper for longer star formation time-scales and lower spatial resolutions regardless of the fitting method employed. We present a toy model that quantitatively captures the dependence of the simulated galaxies' rSFMS slope on spatial resolution and use it to illustrate how this dependence can be used to constrain the characteristic mass of star-forming clumps., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We utilize the ALMA-MaNGA QUEnch and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) survey to investigate the kpc-scale scaling relations, presented as the resolved star-forming MS (rSFMS: ΣSFR versus Σ*), the resolved Schmidt–Kennicutt relation (rSK: ΣSFR versus Σ H 2 ), and the resolved molecular gas MS (rMGMS: Σ H 2 versus Σ*), for 11,478 star-forming and 1414 retired spaxels (oversampled by a factor of ∼20) located in 22 GV and 12 MS galaxies. For a given galaxy type (MS or GV), the retired spaxels are found to be offset from the sequences formed by the star-forming spaxels on the rSFMS, rSK, and rMGMS planes, toward lower absolute values of sSFR, SFE, and f H 2 by ∼1.1, 0.6, and 0.5 dex. The scaling relations for GV galaxies are found to be distinct from that of the MS galaxies, even if the analyses are restricted to the star-forming spaxels only. It is found that, for star-forming spaxels, sSFR, SFE, and f H 2 in GV galaxies are reduced by ∼0.36, 0.14, and 0.21 dex, respectively, compared to those in MS galaxies. Therefore, the suppressed sSFR/SFE/f gas in GV galaxies is associated with not only an increased proportion of retired regions in GV galaxies but also a depletion of these quantities in star-forming regions. Finally, the reduction of SFE and f H 2 in GV galaxies relative to MS galaxies is seen in both bulge and disk regions (albeit with larger uncertainties), suggesting that, statistically, quenching in the GV population may persist from the inner to the outer regions.

In this VERTICO science paper we aim to study how the star formation process depends on galactic environment and gravitational interactions in the context of galaxy evolution. We explore the scaling relation between the star formation rate (SFR) surface density and the molecular gas surface density, also known as the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation, in a subsample of Virgo cluster spiral galaxies. We use new ACA and TP observations from the VERTICO-ALMA Large Program at 720pc resolution to resolve the molecular gas content, as traced by the 12CO(2-1) transition, across the disks of 37 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. In combination with archival observations, we estimate the parameters of the KS relation for the entire ensemble of galaxies, and within individual galaxies. We find the KS slope for the entire population to be N=0.97+/-0.07, with a characteristic molecular gas depletion time of 1.86Gyr for our full sample, in agreement with previous work in isolated star-forming galaxies. In individual galaxies, we find KS slopes ranging between 0.69 and 1.40, and typical star formation efficiencies (SFE) that can vary from galaxy to galaxy by a factor of ~4. These galaxy-to-galaxy variations account for ~0.20dex in scatter in the ensemble KS relation, which is characterized by a 0.42dex scatter. We find that the HI-deficient galaxies in the Virgo cluster show a steeper resolved KS relation and lower molecular gas efficiencies than HI-normal cluster galaxies. While the molecular gas content in Virgo cluster galaxies appears to behave similarly to that in isolated galaxies, our VERTICO sample shows that cluster environments play a key role in regulating star formation. The environmental mechanisms affecting the HI galaxy content also have a direct impact in the SFE of molecular gas in cluster galaxies, leading to longer depletion times in HI-deficient members., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Post-starburst (PSB) galaxies are defined as having experienced a recent burst of star formation, followed by a prompt truncation in further activity. Identifying the mechanism(s) causing a galaxy to experience a post-starburst phase therefore provides integral insight into the causes of rapid quenching. Galaxy mergers have long been proposed as a possible post-starburst trigger. Effectively testing this hypothesis requires a large spectroscopic galaxy survey to identify the rare PSBs as well as high quality imaging and robust morphology metrics to identify mergers. We bring together these critical elements by selecting PSBs from the overlap of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Canada-France Imaging Survey and applying a suite of classification methods: non-parametric morphology metrics such as asymmetry and Gini-M20, a convolutional neural network trained to identify post-merger galaxies, and visual classification. This work is therefore the largest and most comprehensive assessment of the merger fraction of PSBs to date. We find that the merger fraction of PSBs ranges from 19% to 42% depending on the merger identification method and details of the PSB sample selection. These merger fractions represent an excess of 3-46x relative to non-PSB control samples. Our results demonstrate that mergers play a significant role in generating PSBs, but that other mechanisms are also required. However, applying our merger identification metrics to known post-mergers in the IllustrisTNG simulation shows that ~70% of recent post-mergers (, 21 pages, 16 figures

Powerful outflows are thought to play a critical role in galaxy evolution and black hole growth. We present the first large-scale systematic study of ionised outflows in paired galaxies and post-mergers compared to a robust control sample of isolated galaxies. We isolate the impact of the merger environment to determine if outflow properties depend on merger stage. Our sample contains $\sim$4,000 paired galaxies and $\sim$250 post-mergers in the local universe ($0.02 \leq z \leq 0.2$) from the SDSS DR 7 matched in stellar mass, redshift, local density of galaxies, and [OIII] $\lambda$5007 luminosity to a control sample of isolated galaxies. By fitting the [OIII] $\lambda$5007 line, we find ionised outflows in $\sim$15 per cent of our entire sample. Outflows are much rarer in star-forming galaxies compared to AGN, and outflow incidence and velocity increase with [OIII] $\lambda$5007 luminosity. Outflow incidence is significantly elevated in the optical+mid-infrared selected AGN compared to purely optical AGN; over 60 per cent show outflows at the highest luminosities ($L_{\mathrm{[OIII] \lambda5007}}$ $\gtrsim$ 10$^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$), suggesting mid-infrared AGN selection favours galaxies with powerful outflows, at least for higher [OIII] $\lambda$5007 luminosities. However, we find no statistically significant difference in outflow incidence, velocity, and luminosity in mergers compared to isolated galaxies, and there is no dependence on merger stage. Therefore, while interactions are predicted to drive gas inflows and subsequently trigger nuclear star formation and accretion activity, when the power source of the outflow is controlled for, the merging environment has no further impact on the large-scale ionised outflows as traced by [OIII] $\lambda5007$., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, to be published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We investigate the role of galaxy mergers on supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion and star formation quenching in three state-of-the-art cosmological simulations with contrasting physics models: EAGLE, Illustris and IllustrisTNG. We find that recently coalesced 'post-mergers' in all three simulations have elevated SMBH accretion rates by factors of ~2-5. However, rapid (within 500 Myr of coalescence) quenching of star formation is rare, with incidence rates of 0.4% in Illustris, 4.5% in EAGLE and 10% in IllustrisTNG. The rarity of quenching in post-mergers results from substantial gas reservoirs that remain intact after the merger. The post-mergers that do successfully quench tend to be those that had both low pre-merger gas fractions as well as those that experience the largest gas losses. Although rare, the recently quenched fraction of post-mergers is still elevated compared to a control sample of non-mergers by factors of two in IllustrisTNG and 11 in EAGLE. Conversely, quenching is rarer in Illustris post-mergers than in their control. Recent observational results by Ellison et al. have found rapid quenching to be at least 30 times more common in post-mergers, a significantly higher excess than found in any of the simulations. Our results, therefore, indicate that whilst merger-induced SMBH accretion is a widespread prediction of the simulations, its link to quenching depends sensitively on the physics models, and that none of the subgrid models of the simulations studied here can fully capture the connection between mergers and rapid quenching seen in observations., Comment: This article has been accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We investigate the nature of the scaling relations between the surface density of star formation rate ($\Sigma _{\rm SFR}$), stellar mass ($\Sigma _*$), and molecular gas mass ($\Sigma _{\rm H_2}$), aiming at distinguishing between the relations that are primary, i.e. more fundamental, and those which are instead an indirect by-product of the other relations. We use the ALMaQUEST survey and analyse the data by using both partial correlations and Random Forest regression techniques. We unambiguously find that the strongest intrinsic correlation is between $\Sigma _{\rm SFR}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm H_2}$ (i.e. the resolved Schmidt-Kennicutt relation), followed by the correlation between $\Sigma _{\rm H_2}$ and $\Sigma _*$ (resolved Molecular Gas Main Sequence, rMGMS). Once these two correlations are taken into account, we find that there is no evidence for any intrinsic correlation between $\Sigma _{\rm SFR}$ and $\Sigma _*$, implying that SFR is entirely driven by the amount of molecular gas, while its dependence on stellar mass (i.e. the resolved Star Forming Main Sequence, rSFMS) simply emerges as a consequence of the relationship between molecular gas and stellar mass., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 7 pages, 4 figures

We present the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey, a new effort to map $^{12}$CO($2-1$), $^{13}$CO($2-1$), and C$^{18}$O($2-1$) in 51 Virgo Cluster galaxies with the Atacama Compact Array, part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The primary motivation of VERTICO is to understand the physical mechanisms that perturb molecular gas disks, and therefore star formation and galaxy evolution, in dense environments. This first paper contains an overview of VERTICO's design and sample selection, $^{12}$CO($2-1$) observations, and data reduction procedures. We characterize global $^{12}$CO($2-1$) fluxes and molecular gas masses for the 49 detected VERTICO galaxies, provide upper limits for the two non-detections, and produce resolved $^{12}$CO($2-1$) data products (median resolution $= 8^{\prime\prime} \approx 640~{\rm pc}$). Azimuthally averaged $^{12}$CO($2-1$) radial intensity profiles are presented along with derived molecular gas radii. We demonstrate the scientific power of VERTICO by comparing the molecular gas size--mass scaling relation for our galaxies with a control sample of field galaxies, highlighting the strong effect that radius definition has on this correlation. We discuss the drivers of the form and scatter in the size--mass relation and highlight areas for future work. VERTICO is an ideal resource for studying the fate of molecular gas in cluster galaxies and the physics of environment-driven processes that perturb the star formation cycle. Investigation of the triggering mechanisms of radio AGN is important for improving our general understanding of galaxy evolution. In the first paper in this series, detailed morphological analysis of high-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs) with intermediate radio powers suggested that the importance of triggering via galaxy mergers and interactions increases strongly with AGN radio power and weakly with optical emission-line luminosity. Here, we use an online classification interface to expand our morphological analysis to a much larger sample of 155 active galaxies (3CR radio galaxies, radio-intermediate HERGs and Type 2 quasars) that covers a broad range in both 1.4 GHz radio power and [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission-line luminosity. All active galaxy samples are found to exhibit excesses in their rates of morphological disturbance relative to 378 stellar-mass- and redshift-matched non-active control galaxies classified randomly and blindly alongside them. These excesses are highest for the 3CR HERGs (4.7$\sigma$) and Type 2 quasar hosts (3.7$\sigma$), supporting the idea that galaxy mergers provide the dominant triggering mechanism for these subgroups. When the full active galaxy sample is considered, there is clear evidence to suggest that the enhancement in the rate of disturbance relative to the controls increases strongly with [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission-line luminosity but not with 1.4 GHz radio power. Evidence that the dominant AGN host types change from early-type galaxies at high radio powers to late-type galaxies at low radio powers is also found, suggesting that triggering by secular, disk-based processes holds more importance for lower-power radio AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 pages, 11 figures. In major galaxy mergers, the orbits of stars are violently perturbed, and gas is torqued to the centre, diluting the gas metallicity and igniting a starburst. In this paper, we study the gas dynamics in and around merging galaxies using a series of cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) zoom-in simulations. We find that the gas bridge connecting the merging galaxies pre-coalescence is dominated by turbulent pressure, with turbulent Mach numbers peaking at values of 1.6-3.3. This implies that bridges are dominated by supersonic turbulence, and are thus ideal candidates for studying the impact of extreme environments on star formation. We also find that gas accreted from the circumgalactic medium (CGM) during the merger significantly contributes (27-51 per cent) to the star formation rate (SFR) at the time of coalescence and drives the subsequent reignition of star formation in the merger remnant. Indeed, 19-53 per cent of the SFR at z=0 originates from gas belonging to the CGM prior the merger. Finally, we investigate the origin of the metallicity-diluted gas at the centre of merging galaxies. We show that this gas is rapidly accreted onto the galactic centre with a time-scale much shorter than that of normal star-forming galaxies. We present polynomial conversions between each of 11 different strong line gas-phase metallicity calibrations, each based on $\sim$ 1.1 million star-forming spaxels in the public Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 15 (DR15) Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. For this sample, which is $\sim$ 20 times larger than previous works, we present 5th order polynomial fits for each of 110 possible calibration conversions, for both Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC)-type and Milky Way (MW)-type dust corrections. The typical $2\sigma$ scatter around our polynomial fits is 0.1 dex; we present the range over which the metallicities are valid. Conversions between metallicities which rely on the same set of line ratios, or a heavily shared set of emission lines, have reduced scatter in their conversions relative to those conversions with little overlap in required emission lines. Calibration conversions with less consistent sets of emission lines also have increased galaxy-to-galaxy variability, and this variability can account for up to 35% of the total scatter. We also compare our conversions to previous work with the single fibre SDSS DR7 spectra along with higher spatial resolution data from the TYPHOON Integral Field Spectroscopy survey, resulting in comparison samples with spatial resolutions from several kpc down to $\sim$100 pc. Our metallicity conversions, obtained with the large sample of MaNGA, are robust against the influence of diffuse ionized gas, redshift, effective radius and spatial blurring, and are therefore consistent across both integrated spectra and the high resolution integral field spectroscopy data., Comment: MNRAS accepted. 20 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables. Machine learning is becoming a popular tool to quantify galaxy morphologies and identify mergers. However, this technique relies on using an appropriate set of training data to be successful. By combining hydrodynamical simulations, synthetic observations and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), we quantitatively assess how realistic simulated galaxy images must be in order to reliably classify mergers. Specifically, we compare the performance of CNNs trained with two types of galaxy images, stellar maps and dust-inclusive radiatively transferred images, each with three levels of observational realism: (1) no observational effects (idealized images), (2) realistic sky and point spread function (semi-realistic images), (3) insertion into a real sky image (fully realistic images). We find that networks trained on either idealized or semi-real images have poor performance when applied to survey-realistic images. In contrast, networks trained on fully realistic images achieve 87.1% classification performance. Importantly, the level of realism in the training images is much more important than whether the images included radiative transfer, or simply used the stellar maps (87.1% compared to 79.6% accuracy, respectively). Therefore, one can avoid the large computational and storage cost of running radiative transfer with a relatively modest compromise in classification performance. Making photometry-based networks insensitive to colour incurs a very mild penalty to performance with survey-realistic data (86.0% with r-only compared to 87.1% with gri). This result demonstrates that while colour can be exploited by colour-sensitive networks, it is not necessary to achieve high accuracy and so can be avoided if desired. We investigate the spatial structure and evolution of star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM) in interacting galaxies. We use an extensive suite of parsec-scale galaxy merger simulations (stellar mass ratio = 2.5:1), which employs the "Feedback In Realistic Environments-" model (fire-2). This framework resolves star formation, feedback processes, and the multi-phase structure of the ISM. We focus on the galaxy-pair stages of interaction. We find that close encounters substantially augment cool (HI) and cold-dense (H2) gas budgets, elevating the formation of new stars as a result. This enhancement is centrally-concentrated for the secondary galaxy, and more radially extended for the primary. This behaviour is weakly dependent on orbital geometry. We also find that galaxies with elevated global star formation rate (SFR) experience intense nuclear SFR enhancement, driven by high levels of either star formation efficiency (SFE) or available cold-dense gas fuel. Galaxies with suppressed global SFR also contain a nuclear cold-dense gas reservoir, but low SFE levels diminish SFR in the central region. Concretely, in the majority of cases, SFR-enhancement in the central kiloparsec is fuel-driven (55% for the secondary, 71% for the primary) -- whilst central SFR-suppression is efficiency-driven (91% for the secondary, 97% for the primary). Our numerical predictions underscore the need of substantially larger, and/or merger-dedicated, spatially-resolved galaxy surveys -- capable of examining vast and diverse samples of interacting systems -- coupled with multi-wavelength campaigns aimed to capture their internal ISM structure., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, MNRAS accepted. Observations have revealed that disturbances in the cold neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in galaxies are ubiquitous, but the reasons for these disturbances remain unclear. While some studies suggest that asymmetries in integrated HI spectra (global HI asymmetry) are higher in HI-rich systems, others claim that they are preferentially found in HI-poor galaxies. In this work, we utilise the ALFALFA and xGASS surveys, plus a sample of post-merger galaxies, to clarify the link between global HI asymmetry and the gas properties of galaxies. Focusing on star-forming galaxies in ALFALFA, we find that elevated global HI asymmetry is not associated with a change in the HI content of a galaxy, and that only the galaxies with the highest global HI asymmetry show a small increase in specific star-formation rate (sSFR). However, we show that the lack of a trend with HI content is because ALFALFA misses the gas-poor tail of the star-forming main-sequence. Using xGASS to obtain a sample of star-forming galaxies that is representative in both sSFR and HI content, we find that global HI asymmetric galaxies are typically more gas-poor than symmetric ones at fixed stellar mass, with no change in sSFR. Our results highlight the complexity of the connection between galaxy properties and global HI asymmetry. This is further confirmed by the fact that even post-merger galaxies show both symmetric and asymmetric HI spectra, demonstrating that merger activity does not always lead to an asymmetric global HI spectrum., 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the measured gas-phase metal column densities in 155 sub-damped Ly α systems (subDLAs) with the aim to investigate the contribution of subDLAs to the chemical evolution of the Universe. The sample was identified within the absorber-blind XQ-100 quasar spectroscopic survey over the redshift range 2.4 ≤ zabs ≤ 4.3. Using all available column densities of the ionic species investigated (mainly C IV, Si II, Mg II, Si IV, Al II, Fe II, C II, and O I; in order of decreasing detection frequency), we estimate the ionization-corrected gas-phase metallicity of each system using Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques to explore a large grid of CLOUDY ionization models. Without accounting for ionization and dust depletion effects, we find that the H I-weighted gas-phase metallicity evolution of subDLAs is consistent with damped Ly α systems (DLAs). When ionization corrections are included, subDLAs are systematically more metal poor than DLAs (between ≈0.5σ and ≈3σ significance) by up to ≈1.0 dex over the redshift range 3 ≤ zabs ≤ 4.3. The correlation of gas phase [Si/Fe] with metallicity in subDLAs appears to be consistent with that of DLAs, suggesting that the two classes of absorbers have a similar relative dust depletion pattern. As previously seen for Lyman limit systems, the gas phase [C/O] in subDLAs remains constantly solar for all metallicities indicating that both subDLAs and Lyman limit systems could trace carbon-rich ejecta, potentially in circumgalactic environments. © 2021 The Author(s)., We are grateful to Ryan Cooke for providing unpublished abundance measurements to compute the ICs for the metal-poor DLAs. We study the structural evolution of isolated star-forming galaxies in the Illustris TNG100-1 hydrodynamical simulation, with a focus on investigating the growth of the central core density within 2 kpc ($\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$) in relation to total stellar mass ($M_*$) at z < 0.5. First, we show that several observational trends in the $\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$-$M_*$ plane are qualitatively reproduced in IllustrisTNG, including the distributions of AGN, star forming galaxies, quiescent galaxies, and radial profiles of stellar age, sSFR, and metallicity. We find that galaxies with dense cores evolve parallel to the $\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$-$M_*$ relation, while galaxies with diffuse cores evolve along shallower trajectories. We investigate possible drivers of rapid growth in $\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$ compared to $M_*$. Both the current sSFR gradient and the BH accretion rate are indicators of past core growth, but are not predictors of future core growth. Major mergers (although rare in our sample; $\sim$10%) cause steeper core growth, except for high mass ($M_*$ >$\sim$ $10^{10} M_{\odot}$) mergers, which are mostly dry. Disc instabilities, as measured by the fraction of mass with Toomre Q < 2, are not predictive of rapid core growth. Instead, rapid core growth results in more stable discs. The cumulative black hole feedback history sets the maximum rate of core growth, preventing rapid growth in high-mass galaxies ($M_*$ >$\sim$ $10^{9.5} M_{\odot}$). For massive galaxies the total specific angular momentum of accreting gas is the most important predictor of future core growth. Our results suggest that the angular momentum of accreting gas controls the slope, width and zero-point evolution of the $\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$-$M_*$ relation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Strong line metallicity calibrations are widely used to determine the gas phase metallicities of individual HII regions and entire galaxies. Over a decade ago, based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4), Kewley \& Ellison published the coefficients of third-order polynomials that can be used to convert between different strong line metallicity calibrations for global galaxy spectra. Here, we update the work of Kewley \& Ellison in three ways. First, by using a newer data release (DR7), we approximately double the number of galaxies used in polynomial fits, providing statistically improved polynomial coefficients. Second, we include in the calibration suite five additional metallicity diagnostics that have been proposed in the last decade and were not included by Kewley \& Ellison. Finally, we develop a new machine learning approach for converting between metallicity calibrations. The random forest algorithm is non-parametric and therefore more flexible than polynomial conversions, due to its ability to capture non-linear behaviour in the data. The random forest method yields the same accuracy as the (updated) polynomial conversions, but has the significant advantage that a single model can be applied over a wide range of metallicities, without the need to distinguish upper and lower branches in $R_{23}$ calibrations. Feedback from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is often implicated as a mechanism that leads to the quenching of galactic star formation. However, AGN-driven quenching is challenging to reconcile with observations that AGN hosts tend to harbour equal (or even excess) amounts of gas compared with inactive galaxies of similar stellar mass. In this paper, we investigate whether AGN feedback happens on sub-galactic (kpc) scales, an effect that might be difficult to detect with global gas measurements. Using kpc-scale measurements of molecular gas (ΣH2) and stellar mass (Σ∗) surface densities, taken from the Extragalactic Data base for Galaxy Evolution-Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey, we show that the gas fractions of central AGN regions are typically a factor of ∼2 lower than those in star-forming regions. Using a sample of ~15,000 kpc-scale star-forming spaxels in 28 galaxies drawn from the ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) survey, we investigate the galaxy-to-galaxy variation of the `resolved' Schmidt-Kennicutt relation (rSK; Sigma_H2 - Sigma_SFR), the `resolved' star forming main sequence (rSFMS; Sigma_* - Sigma_SFR) and the `resolved' molecular gas main sequence (rMGMS; Sigma_* - Sigma_H2). The rSK relation, rSFMS and rMGMS all show significant galaxy-to-galaxy variation in both shape and normalization, indicating that none of these relations is universal between galaxies. The rSFMS shows the largest galaxy-to-galaxy variation and the rMGMS the least. By defining an `offset' from the average relations, we compute a Delta_rSK, Delta_rSFMS, Delta_rMGMS for each galaxy, to investigate correlations with global properties. We find the following correlations with at least 2 sigma significance: the rSK is lower (i.e. lower star formation efficiency) in galaxies with higher M_*, larger Sersic index and lower specific SFR (sSFR); the rSFMS is lower (i.e. lower sSFR) in galaxies with higher M_* and larger Sersic index; the rMGMS is lower (i.e. lower gas fraction) in galaxies with lower sSFR. In the ensemble of all 15,000 data points, the rSK relation and rMGMS show equally tight scatters and strong correlation coefficients, compared with a larger scatter and weaker correlation in the rSFMS. Moreover, whilst there is no correlation between Delta_rSK and Delta_rMGMS in the sample, the offset of a galaxy's rSFMS does correlate with both of the other two offsets. Quantitative morphologies, such as asymmetry and concentration, have long been used as an effective way to assess the distribution of galaxy starlight in large samples. Application of such quantitative indicators to other data products could provide a tool capable of capturing the 2-dimensional distribution of a range of galactic properties, such as stellar mass or star-formation rate maps. In this work, we utilize galaxies from the Illustris and IllustrisTNG simulations to assess the applicability of concentration and asymmetry indicators to the stellar mass distribution in galaxies. Specifically, we test whether the intrinsic values of concentration and asymmetry (measured directly from the simulation stellar mass particle maps) are recovered after the application of measurement uncertainty and a point spread function (PSF). We find that random noise has a non-negligible systematic effect on asymmetry that scales inversely with signal-to-noise, particularly at signal-to-noise less than 100. We evaluate different methods to correct for the noise contribution to asymmetry at very low signal-to-noise, where previous studies have been unable to explore due to systematics. We present algebraic corrections for noise and resolution to recover the intrinsic morphology parameters. Using Illustris as a comparison dataset, we evaluate the robustness of these fits in the presence of a different physics model, and confirm these correction methods can be applied to other datasets.
