1. Bridging Instruction of the Spanish Subjunctive: Exploring Task Types for Heritage and L2 Learners

Abstract

To this day, there are only a few studies that have used a controlled instructional intervention on specific linguistic structures to investigate if language instruction is beneficial for heritage learners (HLs), in the same way it is for second (L2) language learners, and more research in this area is rapidly needed (Bowles, 2018). The results from this small body of research suggest that explicit language instruction can be beneficial for HLs, but overall L2 learners still appear to benefit from language instruction more than their HLs counterparts (Potowski et al., 2009; Torres, 2018, inter alia). The present study seeks to contribute to this growing body of research and further examines if the type of task employed to measure learning gains plays a role in the uneven outcomes heritage and L2 learners evidence after receiving language instruction.

Abstract

This volume presents research from across the subdisciplines of Hispanic Linguistics in an attempt to showcase how new research methods, together with a renewed focus on language variation, have advanced our field. This volume is divided into three sections of original research, with the first describing regional variation of Spanish, the second synchronic variation, and the third learner profile variation. Such nuanced descriptions and analyses would not be possible without new variationist research methods and big-data techniques such as the use of online corpora and data reduction analyses. These overarching themes represent a paradigm shift affecting the whole of Hispanic Linguistics, and are, therefore, best appreciated in an edited volume composed of diverse manifestations of trends like those included herein. The data from these submissions were originally presented at the Hispanic Linguistics Symposium hosted by Wake Forest University in 2021.

Abstract

espanolObjetivo: estudiar y comparar el valor del espesor corneal central en una poblacion adulta sana, mediante diferentes tecnicas de no contacto utilizadas en la practica clinica diaria. Metodo: en este trabajo se estudian y comparan las medidas paquimetricas de 71 ojos de 36 pacientes adultos sanos. La valoracion del espesor corneal se realizo mediante tres instrumentos de no contacto: el microscopio especular CEM-530 (Nidek), el tomografo corneal Pentacam HR (Oculus) y la tomografia de coherencia optica Cirrus HD-OCT 5000 (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Las pruebas se realizaron consecutivamente por un solo observador en una misma sesion y en las mismas condiciones ambientales. Resultados: los resultados obtenidos son intercambiables entre los tres aparatos utilizados, no observandose diferencias estadisticamente significativas entre ellos. Tampoco se encontraron diferencias estadisticamente significativas respecto al genero. Conclusion: estos tres metodos de no contacto corneal para la medida de la paquimetria central suponen una alternativa fiable a la paquimetria ultrasonica de contacto. EnglishObjective: To study and compare the value of central corneal thickness in a healthy adult population, using different non-contact techniques from daily clinical practice. Method: This work examines and compares the pachymetric measurements of 71 eyes of 36 healthy adult patients. Corneal thickness was evaluated using three non-contact instruments: a CEM-530 specular microscope (Nidek), Pentacam HR corneal tomography (Oculus), and Cirrus HD-OCT 5000 optical coherence tomography (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Tests were performed consecutively by a single observer in the same session and under the same environmental conditions. Results: The results obtained using the three devices are interchangeable, given that no statistically significant difference was observed among them. The study did not find statistically significant difference with respect to gender either. Conclusion: These three non-contact methods for the measurement of corneal central pachymetry are a reliable alternative to ultrasonic contact pachymetry.
