Polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted considerable attention because of its excellent properties compared to petroleum-based materials. However, improving its toughness, crystallization, and functionalities is challenging. Using a laboratory internal batch mixer, we produced unique blended nanocomposites comprising polylactic acid (PLA) as the host matrix, epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) as the plasticizer, and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) as the reinforcements. The SEM-EDS test showed that neat PLA had a smooth surface, but the PLA-ZnO nanocomposite had rough micrographs and a uniform dispersion state of the nanoparticles. It was also found that adding ESO to the blend nanocomposites created a matrix droplet structure, and the size of the oil domains decreased as the ZnO content increased. All results derived from FTIR, XRD, and DSC tests were consistent with the morphological features in which ZnO NPs acted as the blend’s compatibilizer and heterogeneous nucleating agent. Our team observed that adding ESO decreased the PLA-ZnO nanocomposites’ glass transition temperature (Tg) by an average of 2 °C and increased the crystallization rate. It was also confirmed that the presence of ESO improved the flexibility and reduced the strength of the PLA. The tensile strength was further enhanced by incorporating ZnO into the blend. Adding 5 wt% of ZnO NPs increased the tensile strength of the PLA containing 10 wt% ESO by approximately 3.5 MPa. Furthermore, the tensile modulus was predicted using theoretical models; for example, the Paul model fitted with experimental findings. The addition of ESO increased the overall surface free energy of the nanocomposites. On the other hand, increasing ZnO content resulted in high contact angles and antibacterial properties of the blended nanocomposites. The favorable characteristics of the resulting films emphasized the potential use of these nanocomposite films as a promising choice for food packaging materials.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and polypropylene-grafted maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) were studied for their effects in blends of polystyrene (PS) and polyolefin elastomer (POE). The method used to prepare PS/POE blends (90/10 and 80/20 wt/wt) containing 1, 3, and 5 phr HNTs with or without PP-g-MA (a compatibilizer) was melt blending. Structural and morphological studies using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy assisted energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed a matrix-droplet morphology and the sample containing compatibilizer has better microstructure than the other formulations. The presence of both PP-g-MA and HNTs together has been discovered to improve the viscoelastic properties of the solid, as evidenced by increased storage modulus and complex viscosity. A notable change occurred in the rheological behavior of the PS/POE blends containing 5 phr of PP-g-MA and HNTs. The dependence of zero-shear viscosity on HNTs loading (0–5 phr) was approximated as a polynomial curve by fitting the experimental data with the Carreau-Yasuda model. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were also used to study the effects of HNTs loading on changes in fluid flow patterns and shear rates. The calculated effective viscosities at a given shear rate (0.05 1/s) were in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. Moreover, we utilized various machine-learning techniques to predict the complex viscosity of PS/POE blends and their nanocomposites. The results showed that Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) outperformed other predictive models based on evaluation metrics. Four-point probe measurements found that the samples containing 5 phr HNT had the lowest conductivities due to the presence of aggregated structures. However, the homogeneous distribution of HNT led to a sudden rise in conductivity in the samples containing 5 phr of PP-g-MA. Computer modeling results of samples with uniform and non-uniform HNT distributions showed that the conductivity decreased with HNT loading and decreased considerably compared to the uniform distribution.

Abstract Herein, a simple melt‐blending method is utilized to disperse of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) in polystyrene/polyolefin elastomer (PS/POE) blends. Based on morphological studies, the PS/POE/HNT nanocomposite containing up to 3 phr HNTs shows excellent nanofiller dispersion, while those filled with 5 phr HNTs exhibit nanofiller aggregation. To overcome the nanofiller aggregation issue, the polypropylene‐grafted‐maleic anhydride (PP‐g‐MA) compatibilizer is added to the PS/POE/HNT nanocomposite, which results in improved mechanical properties for the nanocomposite sheets. Furthermore, the addition of compatibilized HNTs to the PS/POE blends leads to decreased O2 and N2 gas permeabilities. Besides, incorporating POE, HNTs, and PP‐g‐MA leads to a decrease in water vapor transmission of PS. In the end, the experimentally‐determined mechanical properties and gas permeabilities of the nanocomposite sheets are compared to those predicted by prevalent theoretical models, revealing a good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results. Molecular‐dynamics simulations are also carried out to calculate the gas diffusion coefficients in the different sheets to further support the experimental findings in this study. Overall, the PS/POE/HNT/PP‐g‐MA nanocomposite sheets fabricated in this work demonstrate excellent mechanical and gas barrier properties; and hence, can be used as candidate packaging materials. However, the strength of the resulting PS/POE blend may be inferior to that of the virgin PS.

Epoxy (EP) resins exhibit desirable mechanical and thermal properties, low shrinkage during cuing, and high chemical resistance. Therefore, they are useful for various applications, such as coatings, adhesives, paints, etc. On the other hand, carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene (Gr), and their derivatives have become reinforcements of choice for EP-based nanocomposites because of their extraordinary mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Herein, we provide an overview of the last decade's advances in research on improving the thermal and electrical conductivities of EP resin systems modified with CNT, Gr, their derivatives, and hybrids. We further report on the surface modification of these reinforcements as a means to improve the nanofiller dispersion in the EP resins, thereby enhancing the thermal and electrical conductivities of the resulting nanocomposites.
