The aim of this study was to investigate the association between Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and affective temperaments, considering the relevance of ionic balances in neural excitability, as a possible neurobiological basis for temperamental expression. A cross-sectional study involving 55 adult CF patients was conducted. Sociodemographic, clinical and therapeutic characteristics, temperamental and personality dispositions and depressive and anxiety symptoms were evaluated through standardized semi-structured and structured interviews. The majority of the enrolled CF patients were receiving Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) therapy (72.7%), and most of them had hyperthymic temperament predominance (29.1%). Different TEMPS-A (Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire) dimensions were not associated with the type of CF phenotype-related mutation or with the use of CFTR-modulator therapy. However, a tendency towards irritability was noted in patients not undergoing CFTR modulator therapy (6.7 ± 4.72 vs. 4.7 ± 4.33; p = 0.13). In light of the limitations imposed by the cross-sectional nature of the study, a hyperthymic temperament was found to be protective against current or lifetime psychopathologic events, whereas the other temperaments were associated with positive psychopathological anamnesis. Based on the measurement of temperament profiles and the study of their associations with clinically relevant variables, we argue that subjecting CF patients to such a temperament assessment could prove beneficial in the transition towards integrated and personalized care.

Trans-duodenal surgical ampullectomy (TSA) was first described in 1899. Nowadays its role in ampullary tumor surgery is still a matter of debate and requires a multidisciplinary approach. The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of TSA as a curative treatment for benign and selected malignant tumors arising from the ampulla in a single-institution experience. Sixteen patients with periampullary tumors that underwent TSA in our surgical units between January 2012 and January 2017 were included in the study. Patient demographic characteristics, pre or postoperative endoscopic interventions, operative procedures, postoperative morbidity and mortality, hospitalization, follow-up time, and quality of life questionnaire were analyzed. Mean operative time was 238.5 min (range 180-390), mean tumor size was 2.3 cm (range 1.5-3.9). The microscopic surgical outcome was R0 for 14 patients. The most frequent findings in terms of histological type were high-grade dysplasia/pTis (43.7%), low-grade dysplasia in 37.5% patients, invasive adenocarcinoma in 2 cases (12.5%), chronic inflammation in 1 case (6.3%). The readmission rate was 18.8% (3/16) and in 2 cases (12.5%) relaparotomy was required. The cumulative median duration of follow-up was 50 months (range 1-96). 90-days mortality was 6.2%. Mean hospital stay was 12 days (range 8-60). Our results confirm that TSA offers good results in terms of morbidity and mortality; still, it remains a challenging procedure that requires particular surgical experience and operative skills. A method is described for the utilization of pre-coated, non-impregnated silical gel thin layers in one- and two-dimensional separations of carbodhyrates and related compounds. Boric and phenylboronic acids were added to the organic elution systems in different concentrations and their interactions with the sugar molecules during the chromatographic process were studied. A comparison was made between solvent systems containing boric or phenylboronic acid and systems devoid of both acids as eluents. With boric acid-containing solvents the migration of some sugars was considerably inhibited, whereas phenylboronic acid produced an increase in the RF values of certain sugars. The combination of these two types of solvent in two dimensional development resulted in the clear separation of a group of mono- and disaccharides of bioclinical interest.
