A complete accounting of nearby objects -- from the highest-mass white dwarf progenitors down to low-mass brown dwarfs -- is now possible, thanks to an almost complete set of trigonometric parallax determinations from Gaia, ground-based surveys, and Spitzer follow-up. We create a census of objects within a Sun-centered sphere of 20-pc radius and check published literature to decompose each binary or higher-order system into its separate components. The result is a volume-limited census of $\sim$3,600 individual star formation products useful in measuring the initial mass function across the stellar ($<8 M_\odot$) and substellar ($\gtrsim 5 M_{Jup}$) regimes. Comparing our resulting initial mass function to previous measurements shows good agreement above 0.8$M_\odot$ and a divergence at lower masses. Our 20-pc space densities are best fit with a quadripartite power law, $\xi(M) = dN/dM \propto M^{-\alpha}$ with long-established values of $\alpha = 2.3$ at high masses ($0.55 < M < 8.00 M_\odot$) and $\alpha = 1.3$ at intermediate masses ($0.22 < M < 0.55 M_\odot$), but at lower masses we find $\alpha = 0.25$ for $0.05 < M <0.22 M_\odot$ and $\alpha = 0.6$ for $0.01 < M < 0.05 M_\odot$. This implies that the rate of production as a function of decreasing mass diminishes in the low-mass star/high-mass brown dwarf regime before increasing again in the low-mass brown dwarf regime. Analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) can yield local structural information in magic size clusters even when other structural methods (such as X-ray diffraction) fail, but typically requires an initial guess -- an atomistic model. Model comparison is thus one of the most crucial steps in establishing atomic structure of nanoscale systems and relies critically on the corresponding figures of merit (delivered by the data analysis) to make a decision on the most suitable model of atomic arrangements. However, none of the currently used statistical figures of merit take into account such significant factor as parameter correlations. Here we show that ignoring such correlations may result in a selection of an incorrect structural model. We then report on a new metric based on Bayes theorem that addresses this problem. We show that our new metric is superior to the currently used in EXAFS analysis as it reliably yields correct structural models even in cases when other statistical criteria may fail. We then demonstrate the utility of the new figure of merit in comparison of structural models for CdS magic-size clusters using EXAFS data.

Magic-size clusters are ultra-small colloidal semiconductor systems that are intensively studied due to their monodisperse nature and sharp UV-vis absorption peak compared with regular quantum dots. However, the small size of such clusters (<2 nm), and the large surface-to-bulk ratio significantly limit characterisation techniques that can be utilised. Here we demonstrate how a combination of EXAFS and XANES can be used to obtain information about sample stoichiometry and cluster symmetry. Investigating two types of clusters that show sharp UV-vis absorption peaks at 311 nm and 322 nm, we found that both samples possess approximately 2:1 Cd:S ratio and have similar nearest-neighbour structural arrangements. However, both samples demonstrate a significant departure from the tetrahedral structural arrangement, with an average bond angle determined to be around 106.1 degree showing a bi-fold bond angle distribution. Our results suggest that both samples are quazi-isomers. Four kinds of magic-size CdS clusters and two different regular CdS quantum dots have been studied by x-ray total scattering technique and pair distribution function method. Results for the regular CdS quantum dots could be modelled as a mixed phase of atomic structures based on the two bulk crystalline phases, which is interpreted as representing the effects of stacking disorder. However, the results for the magic-size clusters were significantly different. On one hand, the short-range features in the pair distribution function reflect the bulk, indicating that these structures are based on the same tetrahedral coordination found in the bulk phases (and therefore excluding new types of structures such as cage-like arrangements of atoms). But on the other hand, the longer- range atomic structure clearly does not reflect the layer structures found in the bulk and the regular quantum dots. We report experimental evidence for a crossover between a liquid-like state and a gas-like state in fluid methane (CH4). This crossover is observed in all of our experiments, up to 397 K temperature; 2.1 times the critical temperature of methane. The crossover has been characterized with both Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction in a number of separate experiments, and confirmed to be reversible. We associate this crossover with the Frenkel line - a recently hypothesized crossover in dynamic properties of fluids extending to arbitrarily high pressure and temperature, dividing the phase diagram into separate regions where the fluid possesses liquid-like and gas-like properties. On the liquid-like side the Raman-active vibration increases in frequency linearly as pressure is increased, as expected due to the repulsive interaction between adjacent molecules. On the gas-like side this competes with the attractive Van der Waals potential leading the vibration frequency to decrease as pressure is increased., Comment: Uploaded version with higher resolution figures on 23/10/17. In single molecule localisation super-resolution microscopy the need for repeated image capture limits the imaging speed, while the size of fluorescence probes limits the possible theoretical localisation resolution. Here, we demonstrated a spectral imaging based super-resolution approach by separating the overlapping diffraction spots into several detectors during a single scanning period and taking advantage of the size-dependent emission wavelength in nanoparticles. This approach has been tested using off-the-shelf quantum dots (Qdot) and in-house novel ultra-small (~3 nm) Ge QDs. Furthermore, we developed a method-specific Gaussian fitting and maximum likelihood estimation based on a Matlab algorithm for fast QDs localisation. We demonstrate that this methodology results in ~ 40 nm localisation resolution using commercial QDs and ~12 nm localisation resolution using Ge QDs. Using a standard scanning confocal microscope we achieved data acquisition rate of 1.6 seconds/frame. The study of the G-mode pressure coefficients of carbon nanotubes, reflecting the stiff sp2 bond pressure dependence, is essential to the understanding of their extraordinary mechanical properties as well as fundamental mechanics. However, it is hindered by the availability of carbon nanotubes samples only as bundles or isolated with surfactants. Octadecylamine functionalized carbon nanotubes are mostly of a single diameter and can be stably dispersed in 1, 2-dichloroethane and chloroform without surfactants. Here we perform high pressure Raman spectroscopy on these tubes and obtain their experimental G-mode pressure coefficients for individual tubes and bundles. The G-plus pressure coefficient for bundles is only about half of that for individual tubes in 1, 2-dichloroethane and is about two-thirds in chloroform. The G-minus pressure coefficient for bundles is about one-third of G-plus in 1, 2-dichloroethane and about the same in chloroform. These results for the first time provide unambiguous experimental evidence of the significant effect of bundling on carbon nanotubes' G-mode pressure coefficients, identifying it as one of the major reasons for the lack of consensus on what the values should be in the literature., Comment: 22 pages, 1 table, 8 figures

Slow flow of the viscous liquid is a thought-provoking experiment that challenges students, academics and public to think about some fundamental questions in modern science. In the Queensland demonstration, the world-longest running experiment earning the Ig Nobel prize, one drop of pitch takes about 10 years to fall, leading to problems of actually observing the drops. Here, we describe our recent demonstration of slowly-flowing bitumen where appreciable flow is observed on the time scale of months. The experiment is free from dissipative heating effects and has the potential to improve the accuracy of measurement. Bitumen viscosity was calculated by undergraduate students during the summer project. The worldwide access to the running experiment is provided by webcams uploading the images to a dedicated website, enhancing student education experience and promotion of science. This demonstration serves as an attractive student education exercise and stimulates the discussion of fundamental concepts and hotly debated ideas in modern physics research: difference between solids and liquids, the nature of liquid-glass transition, emergence of long time scales in a physical process, and the conflict between human intuition and physical reality.

The origin of visible light emission from nanostructures has been a subject of an intense debate since the early work by L. E. Brus and A. P. Alivisatos in 1980s. The intense research that followed has paved the way towards applications of quantum structures in optoelectronics and in bio-sensing and contributed to the development of nanotechnology. The major new challenge is in accessing the structural, electronic and optical properties of quantum dots on a nanoparticle scale in order to understand complex relationships between structural motifs and their contributions to the relevant physical (e. g. optical and electronic) properties. Here we demonstrate that a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and optically-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy shows sufficient sensitivity to distinguish between regions contributing to the luminescence signal in oxygen and hydrogen terminated Ge quantum dots, thus potentially providing a sub-nanoparticle resolution.

Studies of the mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are hindered by the availability only of ensembles of tubes with a range of diameters. Tunable Raman excitation spectroscopy picks out identifiable tubes. Under high pressure, the radial breathing mode shows a strong environmental effect shown here to be largely independent of the nature of the environment . For the G-mode, the pressure coefficient varies with diameter consistent with the thick-wall tube model. However, results show an unexpectedly strong environmental effect on the pressure coefficients. Reappraisal of data for graphene and graphite gives the G-mode Grueuneisen parameter gamma = 1.34 and the shear deformation parameter beta = 1.34., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B

Raman excitation and emission spectra for the radial breathing mode (RBM) are reported, together with a preliminary analysis. From the position of the peaks on the two-dimensional plot of excitation resonance energy against Raman shift, the chiral indices (m, n) for each peak are identified. Peaks shift from their positions in air when different pressure media are added - water, hexane, sulphuric acid - and when the nanotubes are unbundled in water with surfactant and sonication. The shift is about 2 - 3 cm-1 in RBM frequency, but unexpectedly large in resonance energy, being spread over up to 100meV for a given peak. This contrasts with the effect of pressure. The shift of the peaks of semiconducting nanotubes in water under pressure is orthogonal to the shift from air to water. This permits the separation of the effects of the pressure medium and the pressure, and will enable the true pressure coefficients of the RBM and the other Raman peaks for each (m, n) to be established unambiguously., Comment: 6 pages, 3 Figures, Proceedings of EHPRG 2011 (Paris)
