This study investigated the chemical components and bioactivities of acetone leaf extracts of nine Annonaceae plants collected in the Binh Chau-Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve, Vietnam. A total of 182 constituents were identified, with linolenic acid, diaeudesmin, germacrene D, 1-octadecenoic acid, 8-(3-octyl-2-oxiranyl)-1-octanol, oleic acid, and phenylmethyl ester being the major compounds. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was evaluated using a disc diffusion assay. Eight of the nine extracts, except for the Mitrephora thorelii extract, showed an inhibition effect against Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined using DPPH assay, and the cytotoxic activity was deter mined using SRB assay. The results showed that the acetone extracts of Artabotrys hexapetalus, Uvularia grandiflora, Polyalthia luensis, Xylopia pierrei, Sphaerocoryne affinis, Desmos cochinchinensis, Uvaria littoralis, Mitrephora thorelii, and Goniothalamus touranensis had significant activity with IC50 for the DPPH radical scavenging activity ranging from 18.56 to 702.33 μg/mL, and the IC50 for the cytotoxic effects ranged from 5.39 to 251.77 μg/mL. Overall, the results obtained provide experimental evidence for the potential use of these plants in medicine and other related fields.

The objective of this work was to analyze the content and the chemical diversity of the essential oils from the aerial parts of eight species belonging to Zingiberaceae family collected in Binh Chau-Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve, Vietnam. The essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation and their constituents were investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The essential oils from the aerial parts of eight studied species, including Zingiber zerumbet, Zingiber pellitum, Curcuma pierreana, Globba macrocarpa, Globba globulifera, Alpinia conchigera, Stahlianthus campanulatus and Amomum sp. were obtained in a yield of 0.01%, 0.008%, 0.01%, 0.012%, 0.012%, 0.02%, 0.015 and 0.3%, respectively. There were a total of 75 compounds identified from the essential oils obtained from eight studied species. Four main clusters and three subclusters were formed by the cluster analysis. Cluster I consisted of A. conchigera with the presence of β-elemene (51.76%) and caryophyllene (28.1%). Cluster II contained five species, including Z. zerumbet, Z. pellitum, C. pierreana, G. globulifera and S. campanulatus with high concentration of β-pinene (11.81%, 5.32%, 4.43%, 25.42% and 1.57%), caryophyllene (13.61%, 23.45%, 19.78%, 34.26% and 18.72%), caryophyllene oxide (4.66%, 4.00%, 13.65%, 8.15% and 24.69%). Cluster III consisted of G. macrocarpa, and presented 4-isobutylquinoline (24.43%), β-copaene (21.69%), α-farnesene (20.73%), 2-tert-butylquinoline (6.05%), 3-Dihydroxydiphenylamine (5.47%), β-panasinsene (5.13%) as major compounds. Cluster IV contained Amomum sp. and had eucalyptol (25.22%), camphor (24.51%), camphene (14.57%), β-pinene (13.45%), Isoborneol (9.17%), α-Selinene (6.21%) as main constituents. The present study identified a total of 75 compounds of the essential oils from the aerial parts of eight species of the Zingiberaceae family collected in Binh-Chau_Phuoc-Buu Nature Reserve, Southern Vietnam. Cordyceps neovolkiana DL0004 is a group of insect parasitic fungi collected at an altitude of 1650 m above sea level at the top of Langbiang Mountain, Lam Dong province, Vietnam. C. neovolkiana DL0004 has been used in traditional medicine and possesses numerous biological effects such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammation, antioxidant properties. In this research, the fungi biomass and fruiting body of C. neovolkiana DL0004 were cultured and examined for their antioxidant properties using test methods such as reducing power, scavenging 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, neutralizing 2,2’-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazonline-6-sulfonate (ABTS) free radical, and inhibiting xanthine oxidase (XO). The results showed that all 7 extracts of the biomass were more active than the fruiting bodies of C. neovolkiana DL0004. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract of C. neovolkiana DL0004 biomass showed DPPH, ABTS, and XO free radical scavenging with IC50 values (the concentration of the sample required to inhibit 50% of radical) of 107.01 µg/ml, 111.91 µg/ml, and 106.2248 µg/ml, respectively. Moreover, the reducing power of the EtOAc from C. neovolkiana DL0004 biomass was 0.184 at 1000 µg/ml. From the obtained results, the biomass EtOAc fraction extract of C. neovolkiana DL0004 was demonstrated to contain antioxidant compounds with potential applications in the production of functional foods.

In this study, the sensory, microbiological, and biochemical qualities were used to examine the quality of Pacific white shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei) preserved at 0°C during a 10-day period. The sensory quality was evaluated by a quality index (QI) that resulted from a quality index method (QIM) scheme. Meanwhile, the total viable count (TVC) and K-value were used to assess the microbiological and biochemical qualities of the shrimp. On day 9, the results from TVC and QIM have shown that the shrimp showed signs of spoilage, corresponding to a log CFU/g of 6.4 and a QI of 21.37, which is unacceptable to consumers. The QI increased linearly with storage days therefore the remaining shelf-life of the shrimp was estimated from a linear regression equation. In particular, this study found a linear relationship between QI, K-value, and hypoxanthine content. Furthermore, hypoxanthine itself could be considered as an independent quality index like the K-index. In conclusion, the quality of Pacific white shrimp was categorized into four different classes: excellent, good, acceptable, and moderately acceptable, based on its sensory and biochemical quality indicators.

Introduction: Coriolopsis spp. are broadly used as traditional medicines in India, China, and Japan as antioxidant, antitumor, antiviral, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory agents to treat many diseases. However, the bioactivities of yunzhi mushroom (Coriolopsis aspera) crude extract have not been studied yet. Materials & Methods: The aims of this study are the determination of chemical composition and antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory effects of yunzhi mushroom (Coriolopsis aspera) extract in Vietnam. The chemical constituents of yunzhi mushroom extract were determined via MS, IR, and NMR spectrum analysis, and the antioxidant activity of the extract was evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. The anticancer activity of yunzhi mushroom against HeLa and HepG2 cancer cell lines was tested via the MTT assay. The anti-inflammatory effect of the extract was determined through the quantification of nitrite oxide production using the Griess reaction. Results & Discussion: We identified the presence of 9 bioactive compounds in CoAE extract, including trametenolic B, cerevisterol, ergosterol, ergosterol peroxide, trans-p-hydroxy coumaric acid, methyl ferulate, methyl (2-hydroxyphenyl) acetate, umbelliferone, and 8-hydroxy-3,4-dimethyl isocoumarin. Moreover, CoAE extract exhibited stronger antioxidant activity than another crude extract. Of note, anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects of CoAC were also higher than those of another crude extract. The data indicate yunzhi mushroom as potential functional food for treating inflammatory and cancer-related diseases. Conclusion: The data suggest Coriolopsis aspera as one of the promising functional foods for the treatment of inflammatory and cancer-related diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
