The present study investigated externalizing and internalizing behaviours in Greek (n = 599), Russian (n = 596), Indian (n = 571), and Chinese (n = 376) 7- to 12-year-old children. The Fairy Tale Test was used to measure impulsive and motivated aggression, fear of aggression, anxiety, and depression. The results indicated culture-specific patterns of the aforementioned behaviours. Greek children demonstrated the highest levels of impulsive and motivated aggression, while Russian children had the highest fear of aggression. Chinese children appeared to be most anxious among other cultural groups. Both Russian and Indian children were more depressed than their Greek and Chinese counterparts. Gender and age difference were obtained only for impulsive aggression. Regardless of culture, boys scored higher compared to girls; and 7- to 8-year-old children demonstrated higher level of impulsive aggression than older children. The obtained results are interpreted in light of contextual differences in child socialization in four cultures; suggestions for school psychology practices are offered. (Contains 2 tables.)

Sudhir Kakar, a renowned Indian psychoanalyst, novelist, and author, passed away at the age of 85. Born in Nainital, India, Kakar's early life was shaped by his experiences during the partition of India and Pakistan. He studied mechanical engineering before pursuing further education in Europe. Kakar's career included teaching positions at prestigious institutions and he made significant contributions to the field of psychoanalysis, particularly in the areas of cultural psychology and the psychology of religion. His work on figures such as Swami Vivekananda and Mohandas Gandhi explored the intersection of psychoanalysis and mysticism. Pregnancy and motherhood are important phases in the lives of both parents, in their relationship and the relationship with their baby. The mother appears to be the central figure in the infant's emotional-relationship based life and mothering seems to be the medium of absorbing experiences of internal and external objects. Mothering forms the pedestal of object-relations of the infant. In fact, mother-child interaction and inter-relations strongly hold ground to develop a sense of sound subject-object relations. Mental health of mothers thus is of immense importance in installing healthy reality relations of their children. The present paper deals with a discourse on "motherhood constellation" in the life-growth thematic context. The motherhood trilogy discusses how the self-identity of a woman attains a transition in the canvas of pregnancy. Primary mental representations of the mother enable her to identify with the experiences of her infant by means of reflection leading to subtle adjustments in relation to her handling of her baby and mature subject-object relations. The comparative study examines the personality factors such as Emotional Intelligence, Achievement Motivation, Cognitive Emotion Regulation and Self-esteem among adolescents having homemaker mothers, teacher mothers and mothers working in corporate sector and assesses whether there are any differences among the three occupational groups with respect to the above mentioned variables. It further tries to assess whether there is any gender difference with respect to the aforesaid variables and the interaction between group and gender. Data were collected from 14 adolescent boys and 14 adolescent girls for the corporate working group of mothers; from 15 adolescent boys and 22 adolescent girls of non-corporate or teaching group of mothers and finally from 26 boys and 23 girls of homemaker mothers. The age-range of the sample was 13-18 years. Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS), Deo-Mohan Achievement Motivation (N-Ach) Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) and Self-esteem Questionnaire (SEQ) were administered and comparison was drawn among the different groups. Statistics in the form of Mean, Standard Deviation and two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (F) test and Post-Hoc Tukey (HSD) tests were conducted. Results indicated that children of corporate mothers when compared to children of homemaker mothers were found to have significantly higher score on the factor of emotional intelligence i.e. higher self-emotions appraisal. Significant gender difference was found with respect to one dimension of emotional intelligence. Girls have significantly higher score on emotion regulation than boys. With respect to the dimension of cognitive emotion regulation, other-blame, boys scored significantly higher than girls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fairy tales operate in accordance to the preamble set forward by the fantasy world of children, which young makes readers to wander about in the enchanting world of magic, animation and anthropomorphism. Amidst providing aid to their leisure times and enriching their vocabulary, imagination and creativity, fairy tales essentially enable in "venting out" their emotions and unresolved conflicts in a safe ambience. The present article attempts to probe into the psychoanalytic nuances of six well-known fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers to unfurl their significance in enabling personality-development of young children along the penetrative lens. The psychoanalytic explanation of the Mother Complex, its splitting into the good-mother and bad-mother, the notion of self-concept and the development of the self-system along the different psychosexual stages towards growth and development to attain emotional autonomy and vitality have been noted in the fairy tales? characters of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Seven Dwarfs, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Rapunzel and the Sleeping Beauty. The present research investigated the emotional characteristics of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in comparison with control group. For this purpose, 30 children with ADHD and 30 children without any psychiatric morbidity age ranging from 5 to 10 years were selected. Sample was matched based on the demographic variables. Draw a Man Test was administered individually to both the groups. Drawings were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively, utilizing a list of emotional indicators proposed by Koppitz. Two judges were appointed to assess the psychological functioning of the drawing profiles. For data analysis, Chi square test, Binomial test and Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient (r) were considered using SPSS software (16th version). Results revealed significantly more emotional indicators were found in the clinical than in the control group (X² = 17.46, p<.01) Judgements regarding psychological functioning rated by the two judges on a 5-point scale found to be significantly correlated (r=0.524; p<0.01). Clinical group has poorer psychological functioning compared to the control group. These results suggest that the Draw-A-Man test could be useful as a developmental screening device, to assess the child's emotional maturity and to indicate any possibility of developing psychopathology. Culture is the lens or template we use in perceiving, constructing, defining and interpreting reality. People from different cultural contexts are expected to define and experience reality in different ways. The views of therapies developed in the western individualistic culture and Indian collectivistic culture are strikingly different. Therefore, to successfully treat the patients reared up in Indian culture, the therapist -- mostly trained in therapies developed in the west -- must remain aware of these influences and approach them in a way that is congruent to their belief system. The case presentations illustrate religious and cultural factors markedly influenced the therapeutic intervention. The first case illustrates the psychopathology of a Schizotypal patient and the second one presents with features of Hypochondriacs -- following the ICD 10 (WHO 2006). An attempt is made to formulate the psychopathology following the western models and illustrate how the cultural factors influence the presentation. Furthermore, attempts have made by the therapist to tailor the interventions developed in the west in accordance with the Indian philosophical and cultural modes. It is argued that, until empirically validated Indian psychotherapies are developed and therapists are trained well enough to utilise the Indian methods of therapy, such attempts towards integration can be beneficial. Utilisation of such an approach is likely to reduce resistance in the patients and enhance compliance, and thus have widespread clinical significance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Subjective well-being (SWB) refers to-people's evaluation of their lives-including cognitive judgments such as life satisfaction, and affective evaluations (mood and emotions) such as positive and negative emotional feelings. It seems, therefore, reasonable to assume that the factors of happiness lie both in the environment and within the individual. With this, the study aimed at finding out the relationship between SWB and a set of psychological characteristics. On the basis of literature, it was expected that problem focused coping, social support, and the different ego-functions will have positive contributions to SWB while role stress, emotion focused coping pattern will have negative or no contribution to happiness. The present study attempts to synthesize and evaluate the factors present in organizational role stress, individuals' unique coping styles and ego-functions which might play an effective role in the development of SWB on one hand, and on the other hand, might also cause deterioration in SWB of the tribal population of Tripura. The study was conducted over a sample of 800 working people drawn from different government and non-government organizations of Tripura. Result showed that the tribal people are significantly happier, stress-free than the nontribals that can be attributed to their simple life style and less competitive nature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
