The X-ray Multi-mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) provides simultaneous non-dispersive spectroscopic X-ray imaging and timing, medium resolution dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and optical/UV imaging, spectroscopy and timing. In combination, the imaging cameras offer an effective area over the energy range from 150 eV to 12 keV of up to 2500 cm$^2$ at 1.5 keV and $\sim$1800 cm$^2$ at 5 keV. The gratings cover an energy range from 0.4 keV to 2.2 keV with a combined effective area of up to 120 cm$^2$ at 0.8 keV. XMM-Newton offers unique opportunities for a wide variety of sensitive X-ray observations accompanied by simultaneous optical/UV measurements. The majority of XMM-Newton's observing time is made available to the astronomical community by peer-reviewed Announcements of Opportunity. The scientific exploitation of XMM-Newton data is aided by an observatory-class X-ray facility which provides analysis software, pipeline processing, calibration and catalogue generation. IRAS23226-3843 has previously been classified as a changing-look AGN based on X-ray and optical spectral variations. In 2019, Swift observations revealed a strong rebrightening in X-ray and UV fluxes in comparison to observations in 2017. We took follow-up Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR observations together with optical spectra (SALT and SAAO 1.9m telescope) from 2019 until 2021. IRAS23226-3843 showed a strong X-ray and optical outburst in 2019. It varied in the X-ray and optical continuum by a factor of 5 and 1.6, respectively, within two months. This corresponds to a factor of 3 in the optical after correction for the host galaxy contribution. The Balmer and FeII emission-line intensities showed comparable variability amplitudes. The Halpha profiles changed from a blue-peaked profile in the years 1997 and 1999 to a broad double-peaked profile in 2017 and 2019. However, there were no major profile variations in the extremely broad double-peaked profiles despite the strong intensity variations in 2019. One year after the outburst, the optical spectral type changed and became a Seyfert type 2 in 2020. Blue outflow components are present in the Balmer lines and in the Fe band in the X-rays. A deep broadband XMM-Newton/NuSTAR spectrum was taken during the maximum state in 2019. This spectrum is qualitatively very similar to a spectrum taken in 2017, but by a factor of 10 higher. The soft X-ray band appears featureless. The soft excess is well modeled with a Comptonization model. A broadband fit with a power-law continuum, Comptonized soft excess, and Galactic absorption gives a good fit to the combined EPIC-pn and NuSTAR spectrum. In addition, we see a complex and broadened Fe K emission-line profile in the X-rays. The field of artificial intelligence based image enhancement has been rapidly evolving over the last few years and is able to produce impressive results on non-astronomical images. In this work we present the first application of Machine Learning based super-resolution (SR) and de-noising (DN) to enhance X-ray images from the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton telescope. Using XMM-Newton images in band [0.5, 2] keV from the European Photon Imaging Camera pn detector (EPIC-pn), we develop XMM-SuperRes and XMM-DeNoise deep learning-based models that can generate enhanced SR and DN images from real observations. The models are trained on realistic XMM-Newton simulations such that XMM-SuperRes will output images with two times smaller point-spread function and with improved noise characteristics. The XMM-DeNoise model is trained to produce images with 2.5x the input exposure time from 20 to 50 ks. When tested on real images, DN improves the image quality by 8.2%, as quantified by the global peak-signal-to-noise ratio. These enhanced images allow identification of features that are otherwise hard or impossible to perceive in the original or in filtered/smoothed images with traditional methods. We demonstrate the feasibility of using our deep learning models to enhance XMM-Newton X-ray images to increase their scientific value in a way that could benefit the legacy of the XMM-Newton archive.

We report the discovery of RX J2317.8-4422 in an extremely low X-ray flux state by the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory in 2014 April/May. In total, the low-energy X-ray emission dropped by a factor 100. We have carried out multi-wavelength follow-up observations of this Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy. Here we present observations with Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR in October and November 2014 and further monitoring observations by Swift from 2015 to 2018. Compared with the beginning of the Swift observations in 2005, in the November 2014 XMM and NuSTAR observation RX J2317--4422.8 dropped by a factor of about 80 in the 0.3-10 keV band. While the high-state Swift observations can be interpreted by a partial covering absorption model with a moderate absorption column density of $N_H=5.4\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ or blurred reflection, due to dominating background at energies above 2 keV the low-state XMM data can not distinguish between different multi-component models and were adequately fit with a single power-law model. We report on our ongoing project of finding Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) that go into deep X-ray flux states detected by Swift. Swift is performing an extensive study on the flux and spectral variability of AGN using Guest Investigator and team fill-in programs followed by triggering XMM_Newton for deeper follow-up observations. So far this program has been very successful and has led to a number of XMM-Newton follow up observations, including Mkn 335, PG 0844+349, and RX J2340.8-5329. Recent analysis of new Swift AGN observations reveal several AGN went into a very low X-ray flux state, particularly Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies. We study the X-ray emission of a representative sample of 27 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). The median IR luminosity of our sample is log L_IR/L_sun = 11.2, thus the low-luminosity end of the LIRG class is well represented. We used new XMM-Newton data as well as Chandra and XMM-Newton archive data. The soft X-ray (0.5-2 keV) emission of most of the galaxies (>80%), including LIRGs hosting a Seyfert 2 nucleus, is dominated by star-formation related processes. These LIRGs follow the star-formation rate (SFR) versus soft X-ray luminosity correlation observed in local starbursts. We find that ~15% of the non-Seyfert LIRGs (3 out of 20) have an excess hard X-ray emission relative to that expected from star-formation that might indicate the presence of an obscured AGN. The rest of the non-Seyfert LIRGs follow the SFR versus hard X-ray (2-10 keV) luminosity correlation of local starbursts. The non-detection of the 6.4 keV Fe K alpha emission line in the non-Seyfert LIRGs allows us to put an upper limit to the bolometric luminosity of an obscured AGN, L_bol <1043 erg s-1 . That is, in these galaxies, if they hosted a low luminosity AGN, its contribution to total luminosity would be less than 10%. Finally we estimate that the AGN contribution to the total luminosity for our sample of local LIRGs is between 7% and 10%., Comment: Accepted for Publication in A&A, 22 pages, 9 figures

Aims. We seek a comprehensive analysis of all the information provided by the XMM-Newton satellite of the four Seyfert 1 galaxies ESO 359-G19, HE 1143-1810, CTS A08.12, and Mrk 110, including the UV range, to characterize the different components that are emitting and absorbing radiation in the vicinity of the active nucleus. Methods. The continuum emission was studied through the EPIC spectra by taking advantage of the spectral range of these cameras. The high-resolution RGS spectra were analyzed to characterize the absorbing and emission line features that arise in the spectra of the sources. All these data, complemented by information in the UV, are analyzed jointly in order to achieve a consistent characterization of the observed features in each object. Results. The continuum emission of the sources can be characterized either by a combination of a power law and a black body for the weakest objects or by two power law components for the brightest ones. The continuum is not absorbed by neutral or ionized material in the line of sight to any of these sources. In all of them we have identified a narrow Fe-Kalpha line at 6.4 keV. In ESO 559-G19 we also find an FeXXVI line at about 7 keV. In the soft X-rays band, we identify only one OVII line in the spectra of HE 1143-1810 and CTS A08.12, and two OVII-He alpha triplets and a narrow OVIII-Ly alpha emission line in Mrk 110. Conclusions. Not detecting warm material in the line of sight to the low state objects is due to intrinsically weaker or absent absorption in the line of sight and not to a low signal-to-noise ratio in the data. We are carrying out detailed study of the X-ray and infrared (IR) properties of a sample of local (d < 70 Mpc) luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) using XMM-Newton and Spitzer (imaging and spectroscopy). The main goal is to study the extreme processes of star formation and/or active galactic nuclei (AGN) taking place in this cosmologically important class of galaxies. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton made their first observations one decade ago. The unprecedented and complementary capabilities of these observatories to detect, image, and measure the energy of cosmic X-rays, achieved less than 50 years after the first detection of an extra-solar X-ray source, represent an increase in sensitivity comparable in going from naked-eye observations to the most powerful optical telescopes over the past 400 years! In this review, we highlight some of the many discoveries made by Chandra and XMM-Newton that have transformed 21st century astronomy and briefly discuss prospects for future research., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, published in Nature

We present an analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 985. The EPIC spectra present strong residuals to a single power-law model, indicating the presence of ionized absorbing gas and a soft excess. A broad-band fit to the EPIC and RGS spectra shows that the continuum can be well fit with a power-law and a blackbody component. The RGS can be modeled either with two or three absorption components. In the two absorber model the low-ionization one, accounts for the presence of the Fe M-shell unresolved transition array (Fe VII-XIII), and the high ionization component is required by the presence of several Fe L-shell transitions. The data suggest the presence of a third ionized component with higher ionization, so that the Fe L-shell absorption features are produced by two different components (one producing absorption by Fe XVII-XX, and the other absorption by Fe XX-XXII). However, the presence of the third absorbing component cannot be detected by means of an isolated absorption line in a significant way, so we consider this detection only as tentative. Interestingly, all ionization components have similar kinematics. In addition, whether two or three absorbers are considered, the components appear to be in pressure balance. These results give further support to the idea that warm absorbers in AGN consist of a two or three-phase medium. We note that, while in the model with only two absorbers one of them (the high ionization component) lies on an unstable branch of the thermal equilibrium curve, in the model with three absorbers all of the components lie on stable branches of the curve. We present evidence of the co-existence of either an AGN or an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), together with a young super stellar cluster in the 3 central parsecs of NGC4303. The galaxy contains a low luminosity AGN and hosts a number of starburst regions in a circumnuclear spiral, as well as in the nucleus itself. A high spatial resolution Chandra image of this source reveals that the soft X-ray emission traces the ultraviolet nuclear spiral down to a core, which is unresolved both in soft and hard X-rays. The astrometry of the X-ray core coincides with the UV core within the Chandra positioning accuracy. The total X-ray luminosity of the core, 1.5*10^{39} erg/s, is similar to that from some LINERs or from the weakest Seyferts detected so far. The soft X-rays in both the core and the extended structure surrounding it can be well reproduced by evolutionary synthesis models (which include the emission expected from single stars, the hot diffuse gas, supernova remnants and binary systems), consistent with the properties of the young stellar clusters identified in the UV. The hard X-ray tail detected in the core spectrum, however, most likely requires the presence of an additional source. This additional source could either be a weak active nucleus black hole or an ultraluminous X-ray object. The implications of these results are discussed., Comment: 37 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepted

We have analyzed new and archival IUE observations of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1) in order to revise the ultraviolet (UV) properties of this sub-group of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We have found broad wings in the strongest UV emission lines, ruling out the hypothesis that there is no broad line emission region in this type of objects. Since the similarities in spectral energy distributions from the far-infrared (FIR) to the soft X rays in both narrow-line and broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies do not suggest that the nuclei of NLS1 are hidden from a direct view, we discuss the possibility that the line emitting material in NLS1 is optically thin., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astron.
