1. Control of Meloidogyne javanica in banana by endophytic bacteria

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of 40 endophytic bacteria isolates on the control of Meloidogyne javanica in ‘Prata-Anã’ banana seedlings. Two experiments were carried out in a completely randomized design with eight replicates. In each trial, 20 bacteria isolates and control were evaluated. Bacterial suspensions were applied to substrates during the acclimatization of seedlings at 15 and 30 days. On the 31st day, seedlings were transplanted into pots and soil was infested with M. javanica egg suspension at 8 days. After 90 days, the following variables were evaluated: number of galls, egg masses, eggs per root, reproduction factor (RF), second-stage juveniles, and shoot dry matter. The results of nematological variables were submitted to Principal Components Analysis. In trial I, the variables that most contributed to data variability were as follows: number of eggs and RF. In trial II, RF had greater influence. Of the 40 isolates evaluated, 39 reduced RF, and of the 20 isolates evaluated in the first trial, all reduced the number of eggs per root. Bacillus methylotrophicus EB26, Bacillus cereus EB25, and Bacillus sp. EB37 isolates stood out in the control of nematodes, with RF reduction above 80%.

Abstract: Mental health is an essential component for students' overall development and for creating a healthy and productive school environment. This paper reviews the literature on mental health in schools, highlighting the importance of psychopedagogical interventions. Key risk and protective factors are discussed, along with intervention strategies that can be implemented in the school context. It is concluded that an integrated approach, involving collaboration among educators, psychopedagogues, families, and the community, is fundamental for promoting mental health and academic success for students.

3. Exploring Cross-Functional Teams in Higher Education

Abstract: One major challenge that institutions face when launching transformation efforts is that they operate in "silos," meaning that they have separate departments--for example, student services, financial aid, and advising--that operate independently with little communication or coordination. Many successful transformation efforts include a core group of people who are working together to influence outcomes on a specific issue. The decentralized nature of most colleges can create challenges to implementing a shared vision and making progress that students can see. Siloed teams may not have access to all the information needed to address a problem adequately, and multiple teams may implement contradictory solutions. Cross-functional teams (CFTs) are one potential response to the problem of silos. CFTs are defined as staff members from different functional areas working together to achieve common institutional goals. Bringing together members with different specialties can lead to faster transfers of knowledge, fewer redundancies, and higher-quality decisions. But CFTs do not always work effectively: they may have unclear governance, a lack of accountability, or unclear goals. However there has been little research on CFTs in the context of higher education. Launched in 2021, this project explores how institutions are assembling and using CFTs to advance their transformation efforts. MDRC partnered with three community colleges and one state agency overseeing higher education to explore their efforts to create these cross-functional teams. The researchers set out to document the interpersonal dynamics of these teams and to pilot test a tool at one institution to address barriers to CFTs' smooth operation. This brief shares descriptive findings and recommendations, with the goal of providing funders, researchers, and practitioners suggestions for future research.

Recognising the heightened risk of cyberattacks due to the new enabling technologies in Industry 5.0, this paper analyses potential threats and corresponding countermeasures. Furthermore, it evaluates the existing industrial implementation frameworks, which reveals their inadequacy in ensuring a secure transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0. Abstract: Barnard's star is a primary target within the ESPRESSO guaranteed time observations (GTO) as it is the second closest neighbour to our Sun after the $\alpha$ Centauri stellar system. We present here a large set of 156 ESPRESSO observations of Barnard's star carried out over four years with the goal of exploring periods of shorter than 50 days, thus including the habitable zone (HZ). Our analysis of ESPRESSO data using Gaussian process (GP) to model stellar activity suggests a long-term activity cycle at 3200d and confirms stellar activity due to rotation at 140d as the dominant source of radial velocity (RV) variations. These results are in agreement with findings based on publicly available HARPS, HARPS-N, and CARMENES data. ESPRESSO RVs do not support the existence of the previously reported candidate planet at 233d. After subtracting the GP model, ESPRESSO RVs reveal several short-period candidate planet signals at periods of 3.15d, 4.12d, 2.34d, and 6.74d. We confirm the 3.15d signal as a sub-Earth mass planet, with a semi-amplitude of $55 \pm 7$cm/s, leading to a planet minimum mass $m_p \sin i$ of $0.37 \pm 0.05$Mearth, which is about three times the mass of Mars. ESPRESSO RVs suggest the possible existence of a candidate system with four sub-Earth mass planets in circular orbits with semi-amplitudes from 20 to 47cm/s, thus corresponding to minimum masses in the range of 0.17-0.32Mearth. The sub-Earth mass planet at $3.1533 \pm 0.0006$d is in a close-to circular orbit with a semi-major axis of $0.0229 \pm 0.0003$AU, thus located inwards from the HZ of Barnard's star, with an equilibrium temperature of 400K. Additional ESPRESSO observations would be required to confirm that the other three candidate signals originate from a compact short-period planet system orbiting Barnard's star inwards from its HZ., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

6. FairPIVARA: Reducing and Assessing Biases in CLIP-Based Multimodal Models

Abstract: Despite significant advancements and pervasive use of vision-language models, a paucity of studies has addressed their ethical implications. These models typically require extensive training data, often from hastily reviewed text and image datasets, leading to highly imbalanced datasets and ethical concerns. Additionally, models initially trained in English are frequently fine-tuned for other languages, such as the CLIP model, which can be expanded with more data to enhance capabilities but can add new biases. The CAPIVARA, a CLIP-based model adapted to Portuguese, has shown strong performance in zero-shot tasks. In this paper, we evaluate four different types of discriminatory practices within visual-language models and introduce FairPIVARA, a method to reduce them by removing the most affected dimensions of feature embeddings. The application of FairPIVARA has led to a significant reduction of up to 98% in observed biases while promoting a more balanced word distribution within the model. Abstract: We classify the hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{Q}^3\times\mathbb{R}$ with three distinct constant principal curvatures, where $\varepsilon \in \{1,-1\}$ and $\mathbb{Q}^3$ denotes the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ if $\varepsilon = 1$, whereas it denotes the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ if $\varepsilon = -1$. We show that they are cylinders over isoparametric surfaces in $\mathbb{Q}^3$, filling an intriguing gap in the existing literature. We also prove that the hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures of $\mathbb{Q}^3\times\mathbb{R}$ are isoparametric. Furthermore, we provide the complete classification of the extrinsically homogeneous hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{Q}^3\times\mathbb{R}$.

Abstract: Ionic liquids have proved to be excellent heat transfer fluids and alternatives to common HTFs used in industries for heat exchangers and other heat transfer equipment. However, its industrial utilization depends on the cost per kg of its production, to be competitive for industrial applications with biphenyl and diphenyl oxide, alkylated aromatics, and dimethyl polysiloxane oils, which degrade above 200 {\deg}C and possess some environmental problems. The efficiency of a heat transfer fluid depends on the fundamental thermophysical properties influencing convective heat transfer (density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and viscosity), as these properties are necessary to calculate the heat transfer coefficients for different heat exchanger geometries. In Part 1, the thermophysical properties of pure 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate $[C_{2}mim][CH_{3}SO_{3}]$ (CAS no. 145022-45-3), (ECOENG 110), produced by BASF, under the trade name of Basionics ST35, with an assay $\geq$97% with $\leq$0.5% water and $\leq$2% chloride ($Cl^{-}$), were presented, for temperatures slightly below room temperature and up to 355 K. In this paper, we report the thermophysical properties of mixtures of [C2mim][CH3SO3] with water, in the whole concentration range, at $P$ = 0.1 MPa. The properties measured were density and speed of sound (293.15 < $T$/K < 343.15), viscosity, electrical and thermal conductivities, refractive index (293.15 < $T$/K < 353.15), and infinite dilution diffusion coefficient of the ionic liquid in water (298.15 K).

9. Layers of Identity: Rethinking American Indian and Alaska Native Data Collection in Higher Education

Abstract: All people deserve the opportunity to earn a better living and build a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities through a postsecondary education. But that opportunity is not available equally to all in the United States, and current postsecondary data sets and collection practices at the federal, state, and institutional levels can both lack information on or inadvertently mask disparities in college access and success for different student populations--particularly those from Indigenous communities. This brief focuses on individuals categorized as American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) in federal data sets and highlights the complexities of collecting data about this community, including how AI/AN students are counted and categorized in data collections and how those collections fall short in engaging and representing Indigenous communities. Because of current data collection practices, educators, researchers, and policymakers lack the information needed to challenge the barriers Native students face and to ensure that Indigenous students are well served in higher education. This brief proposes strategies for federal agencies, states, institutions, and researchers to use to improve the collection, reporting, and analysis of AI/AN student data.

10. Believing in the Potential of Every Student: A Case Study on LaGuardia Community College

Abstract: Informed by interviews with administrators, faculty, and students at LaGuardia Community College, this case study explores how a vibrant two-year institution and designated Minority-Serving Institution (MSI), centers the needs of a diverse student body to achieve their academic and professional goals. The case study delves into LaGuardia's innovative practices to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. These insights offer key strategies for institutions nationwide dedicated to equitable access, success, and postsecondary value: (1) Prioritize a student-centered culture: Building and maintaining a student-centered culture requires leaders who explicitly commit to and embody this mindset in every facet of their work. Where an institution invests its money, time, and energy shapes students' experiences. Leaders at LaGuardia encourage collaboration between administrators, faculty, and staff to explore the impact of policies and practices through a student lens. (2) Leverage data to drive change and innovation: LaGuardia utilizes data analytics to identify areas for improvement and implement targeted interventions. As one example, data on enrollment trends helped pinpoint students in nondegree programs who were potential candidates for degree programs and provide the students with additional support. (3) Proactively identify barriers and take opportunities to smooth student pathways: At LaGuardia, this includes establishing connections between nondegree and academic programs, developing articulation agreements with four-year institutions, and ensuring that students have targeted supports before, during, and after transition points.

Abstract: Tree growth and longevity trade-offs fundamentally shape the terrestrial carbon balance. Yet, we lack a unified understanding of how such trade-offs vary across the world's forests. By mapping life history traits for a wide range of species across the Americas, we reveal considerable variation in life expectancies from 10 centimeters in diameter (ranging from 1.3 to 3195 years) and show that the pace of life for trees can be accurately classified into four demographic functional types. We found emergent patterns in the strength of trade-offs between growth and longevity across a temperature gradient. Furthermore, we show that the diversity of life history traits varies predictably across forest biomes, giving rise to a positive relationship between trait diversity and productivity. Our pan-latitudinal assessment provides new insights into the demographic mechanisms that govern the carbon turnover rate across forest biomes.

13. Sine-Gordon kink lattice

Abstract: We consider an extended model with two real scalar fields, $\phi(x,t)$ and $\chi(x,t)$. The first sector is controlled by the sine-Gordon superpotential, while the second field is submitted to the $\chi^4$ one. The fields mutually interact via a nontrivial coupling function $f(\chi)$ that also changes the kinematics of $\phi$. We briefly review the implementation of the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) prescription. We then solve the resulting BPS equations for two different interactions $f$. The first one leads to a single kink-kink configuration, while the second one gives rise to a inhomogeneous sine-Gordon kink lattice. We study the linear stability of these new solutions, focusing on their translational modes. We also explore how the strength of the mutual interaction affects the BPS profiles. 14. Optimal screening strategies in the control of an infectious disease: a case of the COVID-19 in a population with age structure

Abstract: After the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw an increase in demand for epidemiological mathematical models. The goal of this work is to study the optimal control for an age-structured model as a strategy of quarantine of infected people, which is done via Pontryagin's maximum principle. Since quarantine campaigns are not just a matter of public health, also posing economic challenges, the optimal control problem does not simply minimize the number of infected individuals. Instead, it jointly minimizes this number and the economic costs associated to the campaigns, providing data that can help authorities make decisions when dealing with epidemics. The controls are the quarantine entrance parameters, which are numerically calculated for different lengths of isolation. The best strategies gives a calendar that indicates when the isolation measures can be relaxed, and the consequences of a delay in the start of the quarantine are analyzed by presenting the reduction in the number of deaths for the strategy with optimal control compared to a no-quarantine landscape.

15. Enhanced Diffusion in Anisotropic and Non-uniform Geometries

Abstract: Enhanced diffusion, which describes the accelerated spread of passive scalars due to the interaction between advection and molecular diffusion, has been extensively studied in simplified geometries, such as uniform shear and radial flows. However, many real-world applications occur in complex, anisotropic domains where standard assumptions do not hold. This paper extends the theory of enhanced diffusion to anisotropic and non-uniform geometries, where scaling in the $x$- and $y$-directions follows distinct, power-law relationships, and the velocity field exhibits spatially varying regularity. We define a generalized framework for anisotropic diffusion enhancement and rigorously derive new scaling laws for diffusion rates in these settings. Specifically, we show that in a domain with anisotropic scaling functions $ f(x) \sim |x|^p $ and $ g(y) \sim |y|^q $, the enhanced diffusion rate $ r(\kappa) $ for a passive scalar satisfies $ r(\kappa) = C \kappa^{\frac{pq}{p+q+2}} $, where $ C $ depends on the regularity and scaling properties of the domain but remains independent of the diffusivity $ \kappa $. This theoretical result is validated through detailed proofs leveraging stochastic process techniques and variance estimation. Our findings offer a new perspective on the role of domain geometry and anisotropy in diffusion processes, with potential applications in environmental science, engineering, and beyond. Abstract: We study a flaring activity of the HSP Mrk421 that was characterized from radio to very-high-energy (VHE; E $>0.1$TeV) gamma rays with MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, Swift, XMM-Newton and several optical and radio telescopes. These observations included, for the first time for a gamma-ray flare of a blazar, simultaneous X-ray polarization measurements with IXPE. We find substantial variability in both X-rays and VHE gamma rays throughout the campaign, with the highest VHE flux above 0.2 TeV occurring during the IXPE observing window, and exceeding twice the flux of the Crab Nebula. However, the VHE and X-ray spectra are on average softer, and the correlation between these two bands weaker that those reported in previous flares of Mrk421. IXPE reveals an X-ray polarization degree significantly higher than that at radio and optical frequencies. The X-ray polarization angle varies by $\sim$100$^\circ$ on timescales of days, and the polarization degree changes by more than a factor 4. The highest X-ray polarization degree reaches 26%, around which a X-ray counter-clockwise hysteresis loop is measured with XMM-Newton. It suggests that the X-ray emission comes from particles close to the high-energy cutoff, hence possibly probing an extreme case of the Turbulent Extreme Multi-Zone model. We model the broadband emission with a simplified stratified jet model throughout the flare. The polarization measurements imply an electron distribution in the X-ray emitting region with a very high minimum Lorentz factor, which is expected in electron-ion plasma, as well as a variation of the emitting region size up to a factor of three during the flaring activity. We find no correlation between the fluxes and the evolution of the model parameters, which indicates a stochastic nature of the underlying physical mechanism. 17. Cosmic observation of a model in the horizon of $ f(Q, C) $-gravity

Abstract: We develop a cosmological model in $ f(Q, C) $ gravity within the framework of symmetric teleparallel geometry. In addition to the non-metricity scalar $Q $, our formulation includes the boundary term $ C $, which accounts for its deviation from the standard Levi-Civita Ricci scalar $ R^* $ in the Lagrangian. We derive the field equations for the metric and affine connection, employ them within a cosmological setting, and a vanishing affine connection to derive modified Friedmann equations. We use the latest observational dataset OHD in the redshift range $ z \in [0, 2.36]$, Pantheon + SH0ES in the redshift range $ z \in (0.01, 2.26)$, BAO, and the joint datasets OHD + Pantheon + SH0ES and OHD + Pantheon + SH0ES + BAO to constrain the model parameters of our model by employing Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to minimize the $\chi^2$ term. Using the constrained free model parameters we examine the behaviour of different physical parameters of the model and notice that the model transits from deceleration to acceleration. Finally, we observe that the model demonstrates an expanding quintessence dark energy model and converges to the $ \Lambda $CDM in later times., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures

18. Understanding Code Understandability Improvements in Code Reviews

Abstract: Motivation: Code understandability is crucial in software development, as developers spend 58% to 70% of their time reading source code. Improving it can improve productivity and reduce maintenance costs. Problem: Experimental studies often identify factors influencing code understandability in controlled settings but overlook real-world influences like project culture, guidelines, and developers' backgrounds. Ignoring these factors may yield results with limited external validity. Objective: This study investigates how developers enhance code understandability through code review comments, assuming that code reviewers are specialists in code quality. Method and Results: We analyzed 2,401 code review comments from Java open-source projects on GitHub, finding that over 42% focus on improving code understandability. We further examined 385 comments specifically related to this aspect and identified eight categories of concerns, such as inadequate documentation and poor identifiers. Notably, 83.9% of suggestions for improvement were accepted and integrated, with fewer than 1% later reverted. We identified various types of patches that enhance understandability, from simple changes like removing unused code to context-dependent improvements such as optimizing method calls. Additionally, we evaluated four well-known linters for their ability to flag these issues, finding they cover less than 30%, although many could be easily added as new rules. Implications: Our findings encourage the development of tools to enhance code understandability, as accepted changes can serve as reliable training data for specialized machine-learning models. Abstract: We present capivara, a fast and scalable multi-decomposition package designed to study astrophysical properties within distinct structural components of galaxies. Our spectro-decomposition code for analyzing integral field unit (IFU) data enables a more holistic approach, moving beyond conventional radial gradients and the bulge-plus-disk dichotomy. It facilitates comprehensive comparisons of integrated stellar ages and metallicities across various galactic structures. Our classification method naturally identifies outliers and organizes the different pixels based on their dominant spectral features. The algorithm leverages the scalability and GPU acceleration of Torch, outputting both a one-dimensional spectrum and a full data cube for each galaxy component, without relying on Voronoi binning. We demonstrate the capabilities of our approach using a sample of galaxies from the MaNGA survey, processing the resulting data cubes with the starlight spectral fitting code to derive both stellar population and ionized gas properties of the galaxy components. Our method effectively groups regions with similar spectral properties in both the continuum and emission lines. By aggregating the spectra of these regions, we enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of our analysis while significantly speeding up computations by reducing the number of spectra processed simultaneously. capivara will be freely available on GitHub., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. Using semi-Lagrangian schemes, this approach captures complex diffusion dynamics at moving interfaces, integrating probabilistic methods that reflect multi-scale fluctuations. In addition to a rigorous mathematical foundation that includes stability proofs, this model exhibits reduced numerical diffusion errors and improved stability in long-term simulations. Comparative studies highlight its effectiveness in multi-scale scenarios that require precision in interface dynamics. Abstract: OT 081 is a well-known, luminous blazar that is remarkably variable in many energy bands. We present the first broadband study of the source which includes very-high-energy (VHE, $E>$100\,GeV) $\gamma$-ray data taken by the MAGIC and H.E.S.S. imaging Cherenkov telescopes. The discovery of VHE $\gamma$-ray emission happened during a high state of $\gamma$-ray activity in July 2016, observed by many instruments from radio to VHE $\gamma$-rays. We identify four states of activity of the source, one of which includes VHE $\gamma$-ray emission. Variability in the VHE domain is found on daily timescales. The intrinsic VHE spectrum can be described by a power-law with index $3.27\pm0.44_{\rm stat}\pm0.15_{\rm sys}$ (MAGIC) and $3.39\pm0.58_{\rm stat}\pm0.64_{\rm sys}$ (H.E.S.S.) in the energy range of 55--300\,GeV and 120--500\,GeV, respectively. The broadband emission cannot be sucessfully reproduced by a simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. Instead, an additional external Compton component is required. We test a lepto-hadronic model that reproduces the dataset well and a proton-synchrotron dominated model that requires an extreme proton luminosity. Emission models that are able to successfully represent the data place the emitting region well outside of the Broad Line Region (BLR) to a location at which the radiative environment is dominated by the infrared thermal radiation field of the dusty torus. In the scenario described by this flaring activity, the source appears to be an FSRQ, in contrast with past categorizations. Abstract: We report on the discovery of a very prominent mid-infrared (18-25 {\mu}m) excess associated with the trans-Neptunian dwarf planet (136472) Makemake. The excess, detected by the MIRI instrument of the James Webb Space Telescope, along with previous measurements from the Spitzer and Herschel space telescopes, indicates the occurrence of temperatures of about 150 K, much higher than what solid surfaces at Makemake's heliocentric distance could reach by solar irradiation. We identify two potential explanations: a continuously visible, currently active region, powered by subsurface upwelling and possibly cryovolcanic activity, covering <1% of Makemake's surface, or an as yet undetected ring containing very small carbonaceous dust grains, which have not been seen before in trans-Neptunian or Centaur rings. 23. Efficient noble gas purification using hot getters and gas circulation by convection

Abstract: Noble gas radiation detectors with optical readout are gaining popularity in fields like astrophysics and particle physics due to their ability to produce both ionization and scintillation signals in response to ionizing radiation interaction. In addition, the amplification of primary ionization signals can be achieved by promoting secondary scintillation in the gas. Noble gas purity, especially concerning impurities like H$_{2}$O, N$_{2}$, O$_{2}$, CO$_{2}$, and hydrocarbons, greatly influences its performance. These impurities can cause the loss of primary electrons and quench the scintillation signal. A very high purity level of the gas is required. In the early 90's, a simple method was developed for noble gas purification in sealed, small volume (up to few litters) gas radiation detectors. Gas purification is achieved promoting gas circulation through Zr-based hot getters, simply maintaining the gas circulation by convection. The effectiveness of this method has been only confirmed by the energy resolutions achieved in those detectors, which were similar to that achieved in other high-performance noble gas detectors. In this work, we used waveform analysis of the primary and secondary scintillation signals and we were able to evaluate the impact of the attachment and quenching caused by impurities in one of our detectors filled with pure Xe, and estimate upper values for the impurity content in the gas. The maximum overall impurity concentration was estimated to be below 4 ppm, considering nearly all the impurities, and below 82 ppm if N$_{2}$ is considered. The electron lifetime was measured to be 2.1 $\pm$ 0.1 ms, in line with those achieved in other high-performance optical detectors.

The cosmological parameter constraints from this blue cosmic shear sample are stable to IA model choice, unlike passive galaxies in the full DES Y3 sample, the goodness-of-fit is improved and the $\Omega_{m}$ and $S_8$ better agree with the cosmic microwave background. 25. Induced current in high-dimensional AdS bulk in the presence of a cosmic string and brane

Abstract: In this paper we analyze the vacuum bosonic current associated with a massive charged scalar field propagating in a $(D+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk in the presence of an idealized carrying-magnetic-flux cosmic string and also a brane. We assume that the string is perpendicular to the brane which is parallel to the AdS boundary. The brane divides the space in two regions with different properties of vacuum states. We investigate the only non-vanishing azimuthal components of the induced currents in both regions. To develop this analysis we calculate first, for both regions, the positive frequency Wightman functions. These present contributions associated with the presence of a cosmic string only plus the other induced by the brane. 26. Hybrid Adaptive Dual Reciprocity Method for Efficient Solution of Large-Scale Non-Linear Boundary Conditions

Abstract: This article proposes a hybrid adaptive numerical method based on the Dual Reciprocity Method (DRM) to solve problems with non-linear boundary conditions and large-scale problems, named Hybrid Adaptive Dual Reciprocity Method (H-DRM). The method uses a combination of DRM to handle non-homogeneous terms, iterative techniques to deal with non-linear boundary conditions, and an adaptive multiscale approach for large-scale problems. Additionally, the H-DRM incorporates local finite elements in critical regions of the domain. This method aims to improve computational efficiency and accuracy for problems involving complex geometry and non-linearities at the boundary, offering a robust solution for physical and engineering problems. 27. Breaking the north-south symmetry: dyonic spinning black holes with synchronized gauged scalar hair

Abstract: We study stationary clouds of a gauged, complex scalar field on a magnetically (and possibly electrically as well) charged Kerr-Newman black hole (BH). The existence of a magnetic charge $Q_m$ promotes a north-south $\textit{asymmetry}$ of the scalar clouds. This breakdown of the clouds' $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry carries through to the spacetime $\textit{geometry}$ for the non-linear continuation of the clouds: a family of magnetically charged (or dyonic) BHs with synchronized gauged scalar hair, which we construct. Their distinct phenomenology is illustrated by their imaging, exhibiting skewed shadows and lensing. Such hairy BHs could, in principle, result from the superradiant instability of magnetically charged Kerr-Newman BHs, unveiling a dynamical mechanism for creating north-south asymmetric BHs from standard $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric electrovacuum BHs., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: Measurements of $CP$ observables and the CKM angle $\gamma$ are performed in $B^{\pm} \to D K^*(892)^{\pm}$ decays, where $D$ represents a superposition of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}{}^0$ states, using the LHCb dataset collected during Run 1 (2011-2012) and Run 2 (2015-2018). A comprehensive study of this channel is presented with the $D$ meson reconstructed in two-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$, $K^+K^-$ and $\pi^+\pi^-$; four-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ and $\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$; and three-body final states $K^0_{S} \pi^+\pi^-$ and $K^0_{S} K^+ K^-$. This analysis includes the first observation of the suppressed $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ decays. 29. Spontaneous symmetry breaking induced by nonlinear interaction in a coupler supported by fractional diffraction

Abstract: In this paper we introduce a one-dimensional model of coupled fractional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations with a double-well potential applied to one component. This study examines ground state (GS) solitons, observing spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in both the actuated field and the partner component due to linear coupling. Numerical simulations reveal symmetric and asymmetric profiles arising from a slightly asymmetric initial condition. Asymmetry is influenced by nonlinearities, potential depth, and coupling strength, with self-focusing systems favoring greater asymmetry. Fractional diffraction affects the amplitude and localization of symmetric profiles and the stability of asymmetric ones. We identify critical L\'evy index values for generating coupled GS solitons. Abstract: For a digraph $D$ of order $n$ and an integer $1 \leq k \leq n-1$, the $k$-token digraph of $D$ is the graph whose vertices are all $k$-subsets of vertices of $D$ and, given two such $k$-subsets $A$ and $B$, $(A,B)$ is an arc in the $k$-token digraph whenever $\{a\} = A \setminus B$, $\{b\} = B \setminus A$, and there is an arc $(a,b)$ in $D$. Token digraphs are a generalization of token graphs. In this paper, we study some properties of token digraphs, including strong and unilateral connectivity, kernels, girth, circumference and Eulerianity. We also extend some known results on the clique and chromatic numbers of $k$-token graphs, addressing the bidirected clique number and dichromatic number of $k$-token digraphs. Abstract: X-ray polarization is a unique new probe of the particle acceleration in astrophysical jets made possible through the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. Here we report on the first dense X-ray polarization monitoring campaign on the blazar Mrk 421. Our observations were accompanied by an even denser radio and optical polarization campaign. We find significant short-timescale variability in both X-ray polarization degree and angle, including a $\sim90^\circ$ angle rotation about the jet axis. We attribute this to random variations of the magnetic field, consistent with the presence of turbulence but also unlikely to be explained by turbulence alone. At the same time, the degree of lower-energy polarization is significantly lower and shows no more than mild variability. Our campaign provides further evidence for a scenario in which energy-stratified shock-acceleration of relativistic electrons, combined with a turbulent magnetic field, is responsible for optical to X-ray synchrotron emission in blazar jets., Comment: 23 pages, including 8 pages of appendices. 12 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the formation and dissipation of vortices within chaotic fluid flows, leveraging the framework of Sobolev and Besov spaces on Riemannian manifolds. Building upon the Navier-Stokes equations, we introduce a hypercomplex bifurcation approach to characterize the regularity and critical thresholds at which vortices emerge and dissipate in chaotic settings. We explore the role of differential geometry and bifurcation theory in vortex dynamics, providing a rigorous mathematical foundation for understanding these phenomena. Our approach addresses spectral decomposition, asymptotic stability, and dissipation thresholds, offering critical insights into the mechanisms of vortex formation and dissipation. Additionally, we introduce two new theorems that further elucidate the role of geometric stability and bifurcations in vortex dynamics. The first theorem demonstrates the geometric stability of vortices on manifolds with positive Ricci curvature, while the second theorem analyzes the bifurcation points that lead to the formation or dissipation of vortex structures. Abstract: We investigate the effects of solar activity on the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) data collected over 10 years. We report the observation of Solar Radio Burst signals in AERA data associated with intense solar flares accompanied by moderate and strong radio blackout levels recorded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Additionally, although in a frequency range different from AERA, the increased level of X-ray and extreme ultraviolet radiation during periods of larger solar activity also impacts the AERA data in a twofold way: (i) causing the atmosphere to bounce terrestrial radio waves emitted by sources far from the AERA site or (ii) causing radio signals to become degraded or completely absorbed (radio blackout) if the solar radiation results in larger ionization of the upper or lower layers of the ionosphere, respectively. We describe the identification of both cases in AERA data with a remarkable correlation between the Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF), that represents the highest frequency that can be used for radio communication between two points located on the Earth, modulated by the solar cycle, and the broadband noise observed in the frequency range of 30-40 MHz., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

34. The unabridged satellite luminosity function of Milky Way-like galaxies in $\Lambda$CDM: the contribution of 'orphan' satellites

Abstract: We study the abundance, radial distribution, and orbits of luminous satellites in simulations of Milky Way-mass dark halos in the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We follow the evolution of a halo from the Aquarius project and the formation of satellites with the GALFORM semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, in which gas cools radiatively into halos before reionization and in halos that exceed a redshift-dependent ``critical'' virial mass after that. Subhalos are prone to disruption in the tidal field of the main halo, with the number of surviving self-bound subhalos increasing with resolution. Even in the highest resolution simulation (Aq-L1, with particle mass $m_{\rm p}\sim10^3\, M_\odot$), a substantial number of subhalos are disrupted but their galaxies may survive as ``orphans''. Whether or not a satellite becomes an orphan depends primarily on its time of infall. When orphans are included, the simulations yield a converged satellite stellar mass function across different resolution levels. The total number of luminous satellites is sensitive to the assumed redshift of reionization, but the shape of the satellite stellar mass function is robust, peaking at the stellar mass ($\sim 10^3\, M_\odot$) of a halo just above the critical threshold. Most orphans are found in the central regions of the main halo and make up roughly half of all satellites in Aq-L1. When orphans are taken into account there is no need to populate subhalos below the critical mass with satellites to fit the radial distribution of Milky Way satellites, as had been argued in recent work. Abstract: We investigate entanglement islands and the Page curve in the framework of Horndeski gravity on a Karch-Randall braneworld background. In particular, treating the holographic boundary conformal field theory analytically we find that the Horndeski parameters significantly alter the behavior of the Page curve compared to standard general relativity, a feature caused by the nontrivial geometry induced by the Horndeski scalar field. Interestingly enough, the geometry far from the AdS limit plays a more significant role compared to previous studies. This suggests that Horndeski gravity introduces important modifications to the distribution of quantum information in the holographic model. Abstract: The stellar stripping of satellites in cluster haloes is understood to play an important role in the production of intracluster light. Increasingly, cosmological simulations have been utilised to investigate its origin and assembly. However, such simulations typically model individual galaxies at relatively coarse resolutions, raising concerns about their accuracy. Although there is a growing literature on the importance of numerical resolution for the accurate recovery of the mass loss rates of dark matter (DM) haloes, there has been no comparable investigation into the numerical resolution required to accurately recover stellar mass loss rates in galaxy clusters. Using N-body simulations of satellite galaxies orbiting in a cluster halo represented by a static external potential, we conduct a set of convergence tests in order to explore the role of numerical resolution and force softening length on stellar stripping efficiency. We consider a number of orbital configurations, satellite masses and satellite morphologies. We find that stellar mass resolution is of minor importance relative to DM resolution. Resolving the central regions of satellite DM halos is critical to accurately recover stellar mass loss rates. Poorly resolved DM haloes develop cored inner profiles and, if this core is of comparable size to the stellar component of the satellite galaxy, this leads to significant over-stripping. To prevent this, relatively high DM mass resolutions of around $m_{\rm DM}\sim10^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$, better than those achieved by many contemporary cosmological simulations, are necessary., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 19 pages, 13 figures

38. Characterizing conical intersections of nucleobases on quantum computers

Abstract: Hybrid quantum-classical computing algorithms offer significant potential for accelerating the calculation of the electronic structure of strongly correlated molecules. In this work, we present the first quantum simulation of conical intersections (CIs) in a biomolecule, cytosine, using a superconducting quantum computer. We apply the Contracted Quantum Eigensolver (CQE) -- with comparisons to conventional Variational Quantum Deflation (VQD) -- to compute the near-degenerate ground and excited states associated with the conical intersection, a key feature governing the photostability of DNA and RNA. The CQE is based on an exact ansatz for many-electron molecules in the absence of noise -- a critically important property for resolving strongly correlated states at CIs. Both methods demonstrate promising accuracy when compared with exact diagonalization, even on noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers, highlighting their potential for advancing the understanding of photochemical and photobiological processes. The ability to simulate these intersections is critical for advancing our knowledge of biological processes like DNA repair and mutation, with potential implications for molecular biology and medical research.

Abstract: We present new observations from CHEOPS and TESS to clarify the architecture of the planetary system hosted by the old Galactic thick disk star TOI-561. Our global analysis, which also includes previously published photometric and radial velocity data, incontrovertibly proves that TOI-561 is hosting at least four transiting planets with periods of 0.44 days (TOI-561 b), 10.8 days (TOI-561 c), 25.7 days (TOI-561 d), and 77.1 days (TOI-561 e) and a fifth non-transiting candidate, TOI-561f with a period of 433 days. The precise characterisation of TOI-561's orbital architecture is interesting since old and metal-poor thick disk stars are less likely to host ultra-short period Super-Earths like TOI-561 b. The new period of planet -e is consistent with the value obtained using radial velocity alone and is now known to be $77.14399\pm0.00025$ days, thanks to the new CHEOPS and TESS transits. The new data allowed us to improve its radius ($R_p = 2.517 \pm 0.045 R_{\oplus}$ from 5$\%$ to 2$\%$ precision) and mass ($M_p = 12.4 \pm 1.4 M_{\oplus}$) estimates, implying a density of $\rho_p = 0.778 \pm 0.097 \rho_{\oplus}$. Thanks to recent TESS observations and the focused CHEOPS visit of the transit of TOI-561 e, a good candidate for exomoon searches, the planet's period is finally constrained, allowing us to predict transit times through 2030 with 20-minute accuracy. Abstract: This paper presents the first measurement of $\psi{(2S)}$ and $\chi_{c1}(3872)$ meson production within fully reconstructed jets. Each quarkonium state (tag) is reconstructed via its decay to the $J/\psi$($\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-$)$\pi^+\pi^-$ final state in the forward region using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at the center-of-mass-energy of $13 \text{TeV}$ in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.64 \text{fb}^{-1}$. The fragmentation function, presented as the ratio of the quarkonium-tag transverse momentum to the full jet transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{tag})/p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{jet})$), is measured differentially in $p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{jet})$ and $p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{tag})$ bins. The distributions are separated into promptly produced quarkonia from proton-proton collisions and quarkonia produced from displaced $b$-hadron decays. 42. Emergence of intermediate range order in jammed packings

Abstract: We perform a structural analysis of large scale jammed packings of monodisperse, frictionless and frictional spheres to elucidate structural signatures of the static structure factor in the low-to-intermediate wavenumber (q) region. We employ discrete element method simulations containing up to eighty million particles, in which the particle friction coefficient(s), including sliding, rolling, and twisting interactions, are varied. At intermediate q values, corresponding to length scales that lie between that of the nearest neighbor primary peak and the system size, we find the emergence of a prepeak - a signature of intermediate range order - that grows with increasing friction. We correlate the emergence of this peak to real space fluctuations in the local particle coordination number, which exhibits a grainy-like fluctuating field throughout the packing process that is retained in the final, mechanically stable state. While the formation of the prepeak shows varying degrees of robustness to packing protocol changes, our results suggest that preparation history may be used to construct packings with variable large length scale structural properties.

Abstract: The composition of rocky planets is strongly driven by the primordial materials in the protoplanetary disk, which can be inferred from the abundances of the host star. Understanding this compositional link is crucial for characterizing exoplanets. We aim to investigate the relationship between the compositions of low-mass planets and their host stars. We determined the primordial compositions of host stars using high-precision present-day stellar abundances and stellar evolutionary models. These primordial abundances were then input into a stoichiometric model to estimate the composition of planet-building blocks. Additionally, we employed a three-component planetary interior model (core, mantle, water in different phases) to estimate planetary compositions based only on their radius and mass. We found that although stellar abundances vary over time, relevant abundance ratios like Fe/Mg remain relatively constant during the main sequence evolution for low temperature stars. A strong correlation is found between the iron-to-silicate mass fraction of protoplanetary disks and planets, while no significant correlation was observed for water mass fractions. The Fe/Mg ratio varies significantly between planets and their stars, indicating substantial disk-driven compositional diversity, and this ratio also correlates with planetary radius. While stellar abundances, as a proxy of the composition of protoplanetary disk, provide a baseline for planetary composition, significant deviations arise due to complex disk processes, challenging the assumption of a direct, one-to-one elemental relationship between stars and their planets., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Abstract: Controlling the symmetry of optical and mechanical waves is pivotal to their full exploitation in technological applications and topology-linked fundamental physics experiments. Leveraging on the control of orbital angular momentum, we introduce here a device forming super-high-frequency-modulated optical vortex beams via acousto-optic interaction of light with acoustic vortices. Originated by shape-engineering of a single-contact bulk acoustic wave resonator, we generate vortices in a wide band of frequencies around 4 GHz and with frequency/geometrically tunable topological charge from 1 to 13 and beyond. With all electrical control and on-chip integration our device offers new solutions for angular-momentum-based light communication, three-dimensional particle manipulation, as well as novel interaction schemes for optomechanical devices., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

45. MojoBench: Language Modeling and Benchmarks for Mojo

Abstract: The recently introduced Mojo programming language (PL) by Modular, has received significant attention in the scientific community due to its claimed significant speed boost over Python. Despite advancements in code Large Language Models (LLMs) across various PLs, Mojo remains unexplored in this context. To address this gap, we introduce MojoBench, the first framework for Mojo code generation. MojoBench includes HumanEval-Mojo, a benchmark dataset designed for evaluating code LLMs on Mojo, and Mojo-Coder, the first LLM pretrained and finetuned for Mojo code generation, which supports instructions in 5 natural languages (NLs). Our results show that Mojo-Coder achieves a 30-35% performance improvement over leading models like GPT-4o and Claude-3.5-Sonnet. Furthermore, we provide insights into LLM behavior with underrepresented and unseen PLs, offering potential strategies for enhancing model adaptability. MojoBench contributes to our understanding of LLM capabilities and limitations in emerging programming paradigms fostering more robust code generation systems.

Abstract: The XLZD collaboration is developing a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with an active mass of 60 to 80 t capable of probing the remaining WIMP-nucleon interaction parameter space down to the so-called neutrino fog. In this work we show that, based on the performance of currently operating detectors using the same technology and a realistic reduction of radioactivity in detector materials, such an experiment will also be able to competitively search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe using a natural-abundance xenon target. XLZD can reach a 3$\sigma$ discovery potential half-life of 5.7$\times$10$^{27}$ yr (and a 90% CL exclusion of 1.3$\times$10$^{28}$ yr) with 10 years of data taking, corresponding to a Majorana mass range of 7.3-31.3 meV (4.8-20.5 meV). XLZD will thus exclude the inverted neutrino mass ordering parameter space and will start to probe the normal ordering region for most of the nuclear matrix elements commonly considered by the community., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: This paper addresses Yukawa theory, focusing on the scattering between two identical fermions mediated by an intermediate scalar boson, considering the effects of thermal contributions and Lorentz symmetry breaking. Temperature is introduced into the theory through the TFD formalism, while Lorentz violation arises from a background tensor coupled to the kinetic part of the Klein-Gordon Lagrangian. Two important quantities are calculated: the cross-section for the scattering process and the modified Yukawa potential. The main results obtained in this work demonstrate that considering Lorentz symmetry breaking has several implications for changes in symmetries and physical states, while the presence of temperature is strongly related to the strength of the interaction. 48. Sharp well-posedness for the $k$-dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations: Short and long time results

Abstract: We consider the $k$-dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono ($k$-DGBO) equations. For nonlinearities with power $k \geq 4$, we establish local and global well-posedness results for the associated initial value problem (IVP) in both the critical and subcritical regimes, addressing sharp regularity in homogeneous and inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces. Additionally, our method enables the formulation of a scattering criterion and a scattering theory for small data. We also investigate the case $k = 3$ via frequency-restricted estimates, obtaining local well-posedness results for the IVP associated with the $3$-DGBO equation and generalizing the existing results in the literature for the whole subcritical range. For higher dispersion, these local results can be extended globally even for rough data, particularly for initial data in Sobolev spaces with negative indices. As a byproduct, we derive new nonlinear smoothing estimates.

Abstract: This report describes the experimental strategy and technologies for a next-generation xenon observatory sensitive to dark matter and neutrino physics. The detector will have an active liquid xenon target mass of 60-80 tonnes and is proposed by the XENON-LUX-ZEPLIN-DARWIN (XLZD) collaboration. The design is based on the mature liquid xenon time projection chamber technology of the current-generation experiments, LZ and XENONnT. A baseline design and opportunities for further optimization of the individual detector components are discussed. The experiment envisaged here has the capability to explore parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter down to the neutrino fog, with a 3$\sigma$ evidence potential for the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections as low as $3\times10^{-49}\rm cm^2$ (at 40 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass). The observatory is also projected to have a 3$\sigma$ observation potential of neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at a half-life of up to $5.7\times 10^{27}$ years. Abstract: This research explores the development and application of the High-Order Dynamic Integration Method for solving integro-differential equations, with a specific focus on turbulent fluid dynamics. Traditional numerical methods, such as the Finite Difference Method and the Finite Volume Method, have been widely employed in fluid dynamics but struggle to accurately capture the complexities of turbulence, particularly in high Reynolds number regimes. These methods often require significant computational resources and are prone to errors in nonlinear dynamic systems. The High-Order Dynamic Integration Method addresses these challenges by integrating higher-order interpolation techniques with dynamic adaptation strategies, significantly enhancing accuracy and computational efficiency. Through rigorous numerical analysis, this method demonstrates superior performance over the Finite Difference Method and the Finite Volume Method in handling the nonlinear behaviors characteristic of turbulent flows. Furthermore, the High-Order Dynamic Integration Method achieves this without a substantial increase in computational cost, making it a highly efficient tool for simulations in computational fluid dynamics.
