En este trabajo usamos Machine Learning (Randon Forest) como herramienta para clasificar la biomasa y calcular los índices de vegetación buscando identificar las características de la cobertura vegetal en la cabecera del desierto Atacama. Se busca establecer la correlación entre los índices de vegetación y la precipitación, a fin de conocer su confiabilidad sobre la climatología en esta región. Fue importante el análisis geoespacial basado en Google Earth Engine (GEE) y el procesamiento de imágenes Landsat 5 ETM y Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS, para el período 1985 - 2022, lo que permitió caracterizar el cambio climático. El NDVI, SAVI, GVI y RVI han sido probados y validados en sistemas áridos. El NDVI responde positivamente a la precipitación en temporada húmeda y en forma débil en la temporada de lluvias invernales. Se confirma que el NDVI alto corresponde al verano, después de una sequía prolongada. Hacia los años 2020 y 2022, se registra un aumento de cobertura vegetal en lugares de mayor temperatura, evidenciando cambio climático y reflejado en los índices de biomasa.

Se evaluaron en cinco ambientes 45 cruzas simples provenientes de un dialelo de diez líneas subtropicales de maíz de CIMMYT y tres testigos. El diseño experimental utilizado fue un alfa látice , con dos repeticiones por localidad. El análisis combinado a través de localidades se realizó como bloques completos al azar. Para obtener los efectos y la suma de cuadrados de aptitud combinatoria se utilizó el método IV de Griffing (1956). Las mejores cruzas con base en rendimiento fueron 5x10, 5x8, 5x6, 4x10 y 5x7 con rendimientos aproximadamente a las 11 t/ha. La cruza 5x10 superó al testigo CML78 x CML97 con 21% de rendimiento y características agronómicas superiores. La línea S89500F2-2-2-2-B-B fue la que presentó la mejor ACG. El patrón heterótico quedó integrado de la siguiente manera: para el grupo heterótico ¨A ¨ por las líneas uno, cuatro, cinco y seis; para el grupo heterótico ¨B ¨ por las líneas dos, tres, siete, ocho, nueve y diez. Se sugiere la línea cinco sea utilizada como probador “A” y la línea diez como probador “B”. Los híbridos y líneas seleccionadas podran ser utilizadas en ambientes subtropicales.

El objetivo del trabajo es mostrar el papel esencial que juegan actualmente las matemáticas en la teoría de la información. El trabajo está pensado para no especialistas y pretende dibujar en unas breves pinceladas como es la situación actual.

The use of modal tests for detecting damage in reinforced concrete precast slabs is evaluated. A set of eight slabs were tested, each belonging to flats constructed for residential use. Two groups of slabs were identified and, in each group, both cracked and uncracked slabs were found. This made it possible to compare the responses of the slabs when subjected to modal tests. The tests were carried out employing an instrumented hammer and heel drops as excitation sources. Responses were measured using an accelerometer. The lowest natural frequencies of the slabs could be identified and after filtering the results, plots indicating the variation of the lowest natural frequency versus the number of cycles of free decay were obtained for each slab. Such a plot is of more general use than the value of the natural frequency by itself, as it does not depend on slab configuration. It was observed that the cracked slabs presented a similar pattern of variation of the natural frequencies throughout the decay, being distinctive from the pattern observed for their uncracked counterparts. This provided evidence that a quick assessment of the structural condition of such slabs through the use of the tests were feasible.

The mode of action, bioaccumulation potential and toxicity of Rare Earth Elements (REE), with several applications in the technology, medical and agricultural fields, are still understudied. The nitrates acute effects on single exposures, binary and ternary mixtures of lanthanum (La), neodymium (Nd) and samarium (Sm) on Lactuca sativa lettuce seed germination and wet biomass in an artificial soil (AS) and an Ultisol were assessed. Germination (EC 50 ), wet biomass (IC 50 ) and germination inhibition (% GI) were evaluated. EC 50 values show La was the most toxic in Ultisol, Sm in AS, and Nd appears with intermediate values on both substrates. The IC 50 , both single and mixed, decreased from 3- to 181-fold with increasing test concentrations in relation to the control in AS, while increases in Ultisol were observed, followed by decreases at higher doses which may be associated with the low-dose stimulation effect (hormesis). Our findings may be used to subsidize REE risk assessment studies and reinforce the hormesis effect to prevent the use of high application of REE fertilizers, avoiding the accumulation of REE in agricultural soils., (© 2024. Background and Objectives: Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) represent a host-tumor interaction, frequently signifying an augmented immunological response. Nonetheless, implications with survival outcomes in patients with colorectal carcinoma liver metastasis (CRLM) warrant rigorous validation. The objective was to demonstrate the association between TILs and survival in patients with CRLM., Method: In a retrospective evaluation conducted in a single institution, we assessed all patients who underwent hepatectomy due to CRLM between 2014 and 2018. Comprehensive medical documentation reviews were executed. TILs were assessed by a liver pathologist, blinded to the clinical information, in all surgical slides., Results: This retrospective cohort included 112 patients. Median overall survival (OS) was 58 months and disease-free survival (DFS) was 12 months for the entire cohort. Comparison between groups showed a median OS of 81 months in the dense TILs group and 40 months in the weak/absent group (p = 0.001), and DFS was 14 months versus 9 months (p = 0.041). Multivariable analysis showed that TILs were an independent predictor of OS (HR 1.95; p = 0.031)., Conclusions: Dense TILs are a pivotal prognostic indicator, correlating with enhanced OS. Objective: This scoping review aimed to identify and describe the available evidence on the effect of magnifying devices (loupe or microscope) on the performance of restorative dental preparations., Materials and Methods: This study was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for scoping reviews and registered on the INPLASY database. An electronic search was performed in four databases and Grey literature for articles published until November 2023. Eligibility criteria were determined using the PICOS strategy and comprised studies that evaluated the performance of magnification devices for restorative dental preparations. A bibliographic mapping of the evidence was conducted., Results: Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Most of the studies (n = 12) compared the performance of dental preparations using magnification loupes vs. no magnification. The magnification for loupes and microscopes ranged from 2.5x to 4.0x and 6.4x to 10x, respectively. The use of magnifying loupes improved the performance of restorative preparations in 66.6% of the evaluated studies. However, when the magnifications were compared, the greater magnification provided by microscopes did not improve preparation performance compared to magnification loupes. Regarding the place of publication, the American continent concentrates the most significant number of evidence., Conclusions: Although evidence for magnification improving the performance of dental preparations has increased over the last decade, basically only in vitro studies (most of which have taken place in the Americas) have been reported in the literature. The evidence suggests that magnification significantly improves restorative preparation performance when compared to non-magnification. However, higher magnifications (e.g., microscopes) do not appear to improve tooth preparation performance compared with lower magnification devices (e.g., magnification loupes)., Clinical Relevance: Available evidence supports that using magnification can improve the performance of restored tooth preparations. Statement of Problem: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in dentistry has grown. However, the accuracy of clinical applications in implant dentistry is still unclear., Purpose: The purpose of this scoping review with systematic evidence mapping was to identify and describe the available evidence on the accuracy and clinical applications of AI in implant dentistry., Material and Methods: An electronic search was performed in 4 databases and nonpeer-reviewed literature for articles published up to November 2023. The eligibility criteria comprised observational and interventional studies correlating AI and implant dentistry. A bibliographic mapping and quality analysis of the included studies was conducted. Additionally, the accuracy rates of each AI model were evaluated., Results: Twenty-six studies met the inclusion criteria. A significant increase in evidence has been observed in recent years. The most commonly found applications of AI in implant dentistry were for the recognition of implant systems followed by surgical implant planning. The performance of AI models was generally high (mean of 88.7%), with marginal bone loss (MBL) prediction models being the most accurate (mean of 93%). Regarding the place of publication, the Asian continent represented the highest number of studies, followed by the European and South American continents., Conclusions: Evidence involving AI and implant dentistry has grown in the last decade. Although still under development, all AI models evaluated demonstrated high accuracy and clinical applicability. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVDs) is the leading cause of death worldwide. The main risk factors are hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and increased serum lipids. The peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), also known as the groundnut, goober, pindar, or monkey nut, belongs to the Fabaceae family and is the fourth most cultivated oilseed in the world. The seeds and skin of peanuts possess a rich phytochemical profile composed of antioxidants, such as phenolic acids, stilbenes, flavonoids, and phytosterols. Peanut consumption can provide numerous health benefits, such as anti-obesity, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, and hypolipidemic effects. Accordingly, peanuts have the potential to treat CVD and counteract its risk factors., Purpose: This study aims to critically evaluate the effects of peanuts on metabolic syndrome (MetS) and CVD risk factors based on clinical studies., Method: This review includes studies indexed in MEDLINE-PubMed, COCHRANE, and EMBASE, and the Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines were adhered to., Results: Nineteen studies were included and indicated that the consumption of raw peanuts or differing forms of processed foods containing peanut products and phytochemicals could improve metabolic parameters, such as glycemia, insulinemia, glycated hemoglobin, lipids, body mass index, waist circumference, atherogenic indices, and endothelial function., Conclusion: We propose that this legume and its products be used as a sustainable and low-cost alternative for the prevention and treatment of MetS and CVD. Objective: To better understand the immune microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs), here we explored the relevance of T and B cell compartmentalisation into tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) for the generation of local antitumour immunity., Design: We characterised the functional states and spatial organisation of PDAC-infiltrating T and B cells using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), flow cytometry, multicolour immunofluorescence, gene expression profiling of microdissected TLSs, as well as in vitro assays. In addition, we performed a pan-cancer analysis of tumour-infiltrating T cells using scRNA-seq and sc T cell receptor sequencing datasets from eight cancer types. To evaluate the clinical relevance of our findings, we used PDAC bulk RNA-seq data from The Cancer Genome Atlas and the PRINCE chemoimmunotherapy trial., Results: We found that a subset of PDACs harbours fully developed TLSs where B cells proliferate and differentiate into plasma cells. These mature TLSs also support T cell activity and are enriched with tumour-reactive T cells. Importantly, we showed that chronically activated, tumour-reactive T cells exposed to fibroblast-derived TGF-β may act as TLS organisers by producing the B cell chemoattractant CXCL13. Identification of highly similar subsets of clonally expanded CXCL13 + tumour-infiltrating T cells across multiple cancer types further indicated a conserved link between tumour-antigen recognition and the allocation of B cells within sheltered hubs in the tumour microenvironment. Rhomb-I, a 23-kDa metalloproteinase was isolated from L. m. rhombeata venom. Its dimethylcasein proteolysis was abolished by metal chelators, and slightly enhanced by Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ions, but inhibited by Co 2+ , Zn 2+ and α2-macroglobulin. In aqueous solution, rhomb-I autoproteolyzed to a 20- and 11-kDa fragments at 37 °C. The amino acid sequence showed high homology with other snake venom metalloproteinases. Rhomb-I causes hemorrhage that may be ascribed to hydrolysis of essential basement membrane, extracellular matrix and plasma proteins. It preferentially cleaves the α-chains of fibrin (ogen). Rhomb-I inhibited convulxin- and von Willebrand factor (vWF)-induced aggregation on human platelets without significant effect on collagen-stimulated aggregation or other effectors. It digests vWF into a low-molecular-mass multimers of vWF and a rvWF-A1 domain to a 27-kDa fragment as revealed by western blotting with mouse anti-rvWF A1-domain IgG. Incubation of platelets with rhomb-I resulted in adhesion to and cleavage of platelet receptors glycoprotein (GP)Ibα and GPVI to release a 55-kDa soluble form. Both membrane glycoproteins GPIbα that binds vWF, together with GPVI which binds collagen, play a key role in mediating platelet adhesion/activation and can initiate (patho)physiological thrombus formation. The increasing use of Rare Earth Elements (REE) in emerging technologies, medicine and agriculture has led to chronic aquatic compartment contamination. In this context, this aimed to evaluate the acute toxic effects of lanthanum (La), neodymium (Nd) and samarium (Sm), as both single and binary and ternary mixtures on the survival of the microcrustacean Daphnia similis. A metal solution medium with (MS) and without EDTA and cyanocobalamin (MSq) as chelators was employed as the assay dilution water to assess REE bioavailability effects. In the single exposure experiments, toxicity in the MS medium decreased following the order La > Sm > Nd, while the opposite was noted for the MSq medium, which was also more toxic than the MS medium. The highest MS toxicity was observed for the binary Nd + La (1:1) mixture (EC 50 48 h of 11.57 ± 1.22 mg.L -1 ) and the lowest, in the ternary Sm + La + Nd (2:2:1) mixture (EC 50 48 h 41.48 ± 1.40 mg.L -1 ). The highest toxicity in the MSq medium was observed in the single assays and in the binary Sm + Nd (1:1) mixture (EC 50 48 h 10.60 ± 1.57 mg.L -1 ), and the lowest, in the ternary Sm + La + Nd (1:2:2) mixture (EC 50 48 h 36.76 ± 1.54 mg.L -1 ). Concerning the MS medium, 75 % of interactions were additive, 19 % antagonistic, and 6 % synergistic. In the MSq medium, 56 % of interactions were synergistic and 44 % additive. The higher toxicity observed in the MSq medium indicates that the absence of chelators can increase the concentrations of more toxic free ions, suggesting that the MS medium should be avoided in REE assays. Additive interactions were observed in greater or equivalent amounts in both media and were independent of elemental mixture ratios. Aim: To assess the effect of periodontal treatment on HbA1c and diagnostic parameters of patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS)., Materials and Methods: One hundred and fifty-eight patients with MetS and moderate and severe periodontitis were included. They were randomized into a test group (n = 79), which received non-surgical periodontal treatment, and a control group (n = 79), which received no treatment. Medical treatment was delivered to both groups. Clinical periodontal, anthropometric and serological parameters were assessed at baseline, 3 and 6 months. The main outcome was glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and the secondary outcomes were changes in the MetS parameters, C-reactive protein (CRP) and HOMA indexes., Results: Significant reductions in all periodontal parameters were observed in the test group, compared with the control group, at 3 and 6 months (p < .001). HbA1c levels, MetS parameters, CRP and HOMA indexes showed no significant differences between the test group and the control group at 3 and 6 months., Conclusions: Periodontal treatment led to a substantial reduction in periodontal inflammation, although there was no significant effect on the parameters used for MetS diagnosis in patients with early diagnosed and well-controlled MetS., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Germination and post-seminal development are important stages for the establishment of plants and for determining their tolerance to diesel oil. Diesel-tolerant species can contribute to the recovery of contaminated areas, and leguminous plants are promising in the treatment of contaminated soil through nitrogen fixation. This study identified the effects of diesel oil-contaminated soil on the germination and seedlings of the leguminous species Mimosa bimucronata, M. flocculosa, and M. scabrella var. aspericarpa. The experiment comprised two treatments contaminated (4% concentration) and uncontaminated soil and was performed in a greenhouse for 90 days, with evaluations 30, 60, and 90 days after sowing. Germination was not affected, but most root and aerial system parameters were statistically lower in contaminated soil, indicating low initial development potential in soil contaminated with diesel oil. Aim: To assess the interfacial adaptation (gap-containing areas) of two root canal sealers (EndoSequence BC Sealer and AH Plus) to a conventional gutta-percha (GP) cone (GP-sealer interface) in oval-shaped canals filled using the single cone technique., Methodology: Sixteen teeth with oval-shaped canals were selected, scanned in a micro-computed tomographic device, and pair-matched according to the volume, aspect ratio and configuration of root canals. Root canals were then sequentially prepared with WaveOne Gold Primary and Large instruments, followed by filling with WaveOne Large GP points associated with either the premixed calcium-silicate EndoSequence BC Sealer or the epoxy resin-based AH Plus sealer (n = 8 per group) using the single cone technique. After 7 days stored in phosphate-buffered saline solution at 37°C, the specimens were rescanned and the reconstructed images segmented in order to differentiate the filling materials (sealer and GP cone) to the dentine. A total of 453 cross-sectional slices were assessed and categorized according to the presence or absence of gaps at the GP-sealer interface. Mann-Whitney U-test verified the differences between groups and were considered significant at alpha = 5%., Results: Gaps were non-homogenously distributed in two-dimensional axial cross-section images and none of the specimens showed completely gap-free areas along the entire GP-sealer interface. Root canals filled with EndoSequence BC Sealer and AH Plus displayed 171 (37.75%) and 136 (30.02%) slices with gaps in the GP-sealer interface and these frequencies were statistically significant (p = .000)., Conclusions: Although none of the specimens had a gap-free area along the entire GP-sealer interface, oval canals filled with AH Plus showed less gaps than the ones filled with EndoSequence BC Sealer., (© 2022 International Endodontic Journal. The clinical and pathological responses to multimodal neoadjuvant therapy in locally advanced rectal cancers (LARCs) remain unpredictable, and robust biomarkers are still lacking. Recent studies have shown that tumors present somatic molecular alterations related to better treatment response, and it is also clear that tumor-associated bacteria are modulators of chemotherapy and immunotherapy efficacy, therefore having implications for long-term survivorship and a good potential as the biomarkers of outcome. Here, we performed whole exome sequencing and 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) amplicon sequencing from 44 pre-treatment LARC biopsies from Argentinian and Brazilian patients, treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy or total neoadjuvant treatment, searching for predictive biomarkers of response (responders, n = 17; non-responders, n = 27). In general, the somatic landscape of LARC was not capable to predict a response; however, a significant enrichment in mutational signature SBS5 was observed in non-responders ( p = 0.0021), as well as the co-occurrence of APC and FAT4 mutations ( p < 0.05). Microbiota studies revealed a similar alpha and beta diversity of bacteria between response groups. Yet, the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) of effect size indicated an enrichment of Hungatella, Flavonifractor , and Methanosphaera (LDA score ≥3) in the pre-treatment biopsies of responders, while non-responders had a higher abundance of Enhydrobacter, Paraprevotella (LDA score ≥3) and Finegoldia (LDA score ≥4). This experiment aimed to compare at day seven after ovulation, the protein profile of uterine fluid in cyclic mares with mares infused two days before with Day 13 conceptus fragments. Experimental animals were ten healthy cyclic mares, examined daily to detect ovulation (Day 0) as soon as estrus was confirmed. On day seven, after ovulation, uterine fluid was collected, constituting the Cyclic group (n = 10). The same mares were examined in the second cycle until ovulation was detected. On day five, after ovulation, fragments from a previously collected concepti were infused into each mare's uterus. Two days after infusion, uterine fluid was collected, constituting the Fragment group (n = 10). Two-dimensional electrophoresis technique processed uterine fluid samples. A total of 373 spots were detected. MALDI-TOF/TOF and NanoUHPLC-QTOF mass spectrometry identified twenty spots with differences in abundance between the Cyclic and Fragment group. Thirteen proteins were identified, with different abundance between groups. Identified proteins may be related to embryo-maternal communication, which involves adhesion, nutrition, endothelial cell proliferation, transport, and immunological tolerance. In agriculture, wastewater is used as an alternative source to meet the water and nutritional requirements of plants. However, long-term application of wastewater may degrade soil attributes. This study aimed to evaluate the soil physical quality of Oxisol fertigated with treated sewage effluent (TSE). The experiment was conducted in an area under TSE application for 4 years in Oxisol (625 g kg -1 clay) cultivated with Urochloa brizantha. The treatments consisted of six levels of TSE in irrigation depth, 0%, 11%, 31%, 60%, 87%, and 100%, with four repetitions. Undisturbed and disturbed soils samples were collected in three layers (0.00-0.10 m; 0.10-0.20 m, and 0.20-0.30 m). Aggregation, porosity and water infiltration attributes were evaluated. This work concludes a long-term study on the effects of TSE application on soil properties and on the Urochloa brizantha crop. In other works, carried out in the experimental area of the present study, it was found that TSE fertigation increases the yield and quality of Urochloa brizantha, increases soil fertility and does not lead to soil heavy metal contamination. We note the TSE fertigation does not change the aggregation, porosity, water infiltration rate and organic carbon content in the soil. Irrigation with TSE is recommended in areas with clayey soil and those cultivated with perennial grasses as it does not cause any damage to the physical quality of the soil. This report describes a case of sudden death of a pregnant miniature mare due to an acute ovarian hemorrhage leading to fatal hemoperitoneum. The miniature horse was a 12-year-old female, 60 days pregnant, with a body condition score of 7 (1-9), with a history of obesity and laminitis. Electrochemical synthesis has been presented as a powerful technique to produce nanoparticles. However, it has been especially focused on noble metal particles, while few studies have been done on oxides production. On the other hand, when partially doped with trivalent cations at the barium sublattice, BaTiO₃-based ceramics are well known to exhibit semiconductive character, accompanied by a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR). Here, we synthesized pure and La-doped BaTiO₃ nanoparticles electrochemically using a metallic titanium electrode as a Ti source. The powder synthesis was made in an electrochemical cell coupled to a thermostatic bath under mild conditions (ambient temperature and pressure) with an electrical potential up to 50 V and current of 3.2 A. In these conditions, the synthesized powders present nanometric size, confirmed by transmission electron microscopy images. The pseudo-cubic BaTiO₃ phase is confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy techniques. To check the quality, the powders were sintered at 1250 °C and the ceramics achieved a relative density of 95%. The BaTiO₃:La sintered ceramics present a PTCR jump of up to three orders of magnitude on resistivity with minimum value at room temperature of 10 5 Ω·cm.

Background: In the last 20 years, intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) has been explored as a modality for the management of peritoneal metastases of gynecologic, gastrointestinal, and primary peritoneal tumors. Direct delivery of chemotherapeutic agents to the peritoneal cavity space has proved superior to systemic chemotherapy when evaluating characteristics such as drug concentration reached in the peritoneal space, penetration into peritoneal metastases, and chemotherapy-related toxicity. Traditionally, IPC is delivered by peritoneal lavage with a liquid solution. This form of delivery has limitations, including inhomogeneous intraperitoneal distribution and limited ability to penetrate tissues and metastatic nodules. An alternative mode of delivery is so-called pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC). Within this context, the present study sought to identify the pattern of spatial distribution of therapeutic solutions aerosolized into the peritoneal space using a single-port PIPAC device and ascertain whether the aerosolized method is superior to the traditional (liquid) mode of IPC delivery., Methods: Analysis of the rate of intra-abdominal staining with aerosolized 2% silver nitrate in five porcine models., Results: Assessment of differences in stain impregnation between the upper, middle, and lower abdomen did not reveal significant differences (p = 0.42). The median sum scores were 1 for the upper abdomen and 3 for the middle and lower abdomen., Conclusions: Aerosolization does not reach all regions of the abdomen homogeneously. However, adequate exposure of the upper abdomen, mid-abdomen, and lower abdomen to chemotherapeutic agents can be achieved with PIPAC.

Introduction: Cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and HIV co-infection have increased worldwide. We investigated the prevalence of HIV and associated factors among VL patients in Sergipe state, Brazil., Methods: We conducted a population-based study of all cases of VL and HIV reported in Sergipe from 1999 to 2015., Results: We studied a total of 917 patients; 41 (4.5%) co-infection cases were detected. VL-HIV co-infected patients were more likely to have weight loss, cough, treatment failure or loss to follow-up and death., Conclusions: The prevalence of VL-HIV co-infection was high and co-infected patients were more likely to have adverse outcomes.

The purpose of this overview was to assess the methods, quality, and outcomes of systematic reviews conducted to evaluate the impact of bisphosphonates on dental implants and the risk of developing bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw after dental implant surgery. An electronic search without date or language restriction was performed in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and LILACS databases (to January 2018). Eligibility criteria included systematic reviews that evaluated the impact of bisphosphonates on implant outcomes. The quality assessment of the included reviews was done using AMSTAR 2 guidelines. The protocol of this overview was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42018089617). The search and selection process yielded seven reviews, published between 2009 and 2017. None of the systematic reviews included in this study obtained the maximum score in the quality assessment. The scientific evidence available demonstrates that patients with a history of bisphosphonate use do not present a higher risk of dental implant failure or marginal bone loss compared to patients who have not used bisphosphonates. The literature also suggests that patients who undergo surgical trauma during the installation of dental implants may be more susceptible to bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw., (Copyright © 2018 International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Objective: The aim of this review is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the effectiveness of in-home or in-office treatments for dentin hypersensitivity., Materials and Methods: An electronic search without restriction on dates or languages was performed in four electronic databases until March 2017. In addition, hand-searches in regular journals and in the gray literature were also conducted. To develop the search strategy, clinical questions were formulated using the PICOS method. Eligibility criteria included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that compared the effectiveness of different agents for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity through chemical occlusion, physical occlusion, nerve desensitization, or photobiomodulation (low-level light therapy). This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO under number CRD42016039394., Results: Twenty-five RCTs (16 parallel; 9 split-mouth), published from 1992 to 2016, were included. The results of the meta-analysis showed that in-office subgroups treated with chemical or physical occlusion of dentin tubules and nerve desensitization had a statistically significant difference from placebo, with P < 0.00001, P < 0.00001, and P = 0.02, respectively. For in-home treatments, the results of the meta-analysis showed that only those subgroups treated with chemical occlusion of dentin tubules and nerve desensitization exhibited a statistically significant difference from placebo, with P < 0.00001 and P = 0.03, respectively., Conclusions: The results of pairwise meta-analysis suggest that among in-office treatments, dentinal tubule occlusion (whether chemical or physical) and nerve desensitization provide the best outcomes for treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. For in-home treatments, only chemical occlusion of dentin tubules and nerve desensitization showed a greater treatment efficacy than placebo and the difference was statistically significant.

Aim: Evaluate factors associated with pain and analgesic consumption following non-surgical periodontal therapy., Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 218 patients with chronic periodontitis, submitted to non-surgical scaling and root planing under local anaesthesia at a public dental service in southern Brazil. The data collection instruments included a demographic questionnaire, as well as State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale, Visual Analogue Scale, Numerical Rating Scale and Verbal Rating Scale. The presence and intensity of pain were evaluated at 2, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hr after scaling and root planing., Results: A total of 52.3% of the patients reported mild intensity pain at some point during the 48 hr after scaling and root planing with local anaesthesia. Smoking (PR = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.16-1.65), severe periodontal inflammation (PR = 1.31; 95% CI = 1.09-1.58) and dental anxiety (PR = 1.24; 95% CI = 1.03-1.49) were associated with postoperative pain after adjusting for age, gender and state and trait anxiety scores. Moreover, 46.8% of the subjects used analgesics at some time during the 48-hr follow-up period and dental anxiety was the only factor associated with postoperative analgesic use., Conclusions: Smoking, severe periodontal inflammation and dental anxiety were identified as factors associated with pain after non-surgical scaling and root planing with local anaesthesia. Objectives: The aim of the present review was to evaluate by means of a systematic review and meta-analysis the hypothesis of no difference in failure rates between amalgam and composite resin posterior restorations., Data: Randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials and prospective and retrospective cohort studies were included in this review. The eligibility criteria included clinical trials in humans with at least 12 months of follow-up comparing the failures rates between occlusal and occlusoproximal amalgam and composite resin restorations. Clinical questions were formulated and organized according to the PICOS strategy., Source: An electronic search without restriction on the dates or languages was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science up until March 2015., Study Selection: The initial search resulted in 938 articles from PubMed/MEDLINE, 89 titles from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and 172 from the Web of Science. After an initial assessment and careful reading, 8 studies published between 1992 and 2013 were included in this review. According to the risk of bias evaluation, all studies were classified as high quality., Conclusions: The results of this review suggest that composite resin restorations in posterior teeth still have less longevity and a higher number of secondary caries when compared to amalgam restorations. In relation to fractures, there was no statistically significant difference between the two restorative materials regarding the time of follow-up., Clinical Significance: There is currently a worldwide trend towards replacing amalgam restorations with mercury-free materials, which are adhesive and promote aesthetics. This paper examined the psychometric data obtained by the Brazilian version DCQ (Driving Cognitions Questionnaire) and its convergence with DBS (Driving Behavior Survey). The research included 187 participants of both genders, aged between 19 and 79years (mean 34years), with driving license in category 'B' (cars). The internal consistency obtained by research (Cronbach's alpha) was α=0.96 for full DCQ; α=0.89 for the subscale panic in the direction, α=0.91 for the subscale of concern in causing accidents and α=0.92 for the subscale of social concern. Psychometrically the results are positive and confirm the relevance of using the instrument. The survey also found positive convergence (although less pronounced) with the DBS, which is another instrument that comes to difficulties when driving or dealing with traffic or driving a car. Thus, this article demonstrates psychometric results that point to the profitable use of the Brazilian version of DCQ as an adjunct in the diagnosis of difficulty in driving., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. Senna ocidentalis is a weed, native to Brazil, considered to infest crops and plantations, and is responsible for yield losses of several crops, particularly soybean. The aim of this work was to evaluate if the Croton argenteus extract and fractions possess phytotoxic activity on S. ocidentalis. The crude ethanolic extract (CEE) and its hexanic (HF), chloroformic (CLF) and ethyl acetate (EAF) fractions were tested in germination, growth, oxidative stress increase, Adenosine triphosphate, L-malate and succinate synthesis. The crude extract and its fractions slowed down the germination of S. ocidentalis and decreased the final percentage of germination. Oxidative stress was also increased in the seedlings, by an increase of catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase and lipid peroxidation; and it became clear that the ethyl acetate fraction was more phytotoxic. The results indicate that the crude extract and fractions of C. argenteus compromise the mitochondrial energy metabolism, by the inhibition of mitochondrial ATP production, with a decrease in the production of L-malate and succinate. The ethyl acetate fraction of C. argenteus showed high activity on germination and growth, and these effects take place by means of mitochondrial metabolism alterations and increase the oxidative stress, leading the seedling death.

Introduction: Driving anger has attracted the attention of researchers in recent years because it may induce individuals to drive aggressively or adopt risk behaviors. The Driving Anger Scale (DAS) was designed to evaluate the propensity of drivers to become angry or aggressive while driving. This study describes the cross-cultural adaptation of a Brazilian version of the short form and the long form of the DAS., Methods: Translation and adaptation were made in four steps: two translations and two back-translations carried out by independent evaluators; the development of a brief version by four bilingual experts in mental health and driving behaviors; a subsequent experimental application; and, finally, an investigation of operational equivalence., Results: Final Brazilian versions of the short form and of the long form of the DAS were made and are presented., Conclusions: This important instrument, which assesses driving anger and aggressive behaviors, is now available to evaluate the driving behaviors of the Brazilian population, which facilitates research in this field.

The period from the emergence of a dominant follicle until its formation requires tissue remodeling. Enzymes promoting collagen lysis, such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), are fundamental for the process of extracellular matrix remodeling, which allows changes in ovarian tissue architecture during follicular growth. It has been suggested that the production of these enzymes may be affected by the rise in circulating concentrations of LH, which acts on the ovarian surface epithelium (OSE). The aim of this study was to determine the expression of MMP-1, MMP-2, and LH receptor (LHR) in the ovulation fossa and in the central portion of the equine ovary during follicular deviation and dominance. Ovaries of 12 cyclic mares were selected and subsequently divided into two groups: development (DEV) group and dominant (DOM) group. The DEV group consisted of ovaries from six animals whose follicles were less than 28 mm in diameter (follicular deviation), and the DOM group consisted of ovaries from six animals whose follicles measured 28 mm or more in diameter (dominant follicles). The latter group was divided into two subgroups: the group of ovaries with a dominant follicle (DOM-D) and the group of contralateral ovaries (DOM-C). Our results showed that mRNA for MMP-1, MMP-2, and LHR was present in the equine ovary during follicle development, in the ovulation fossa, and in the central portion of the ovary. MMP-1 and LHR gene expression was greater (P < 0.05) for the DOM-D group compared with the DOM-C group. In the DOM-D group, MMP-1, MMP-2, and LHR gene expression was greater (P < 0.05) in the ovarian stroma compared with the ovulation fossa. Using immunohistochemistry, OSE from the DOM group showed increased expression compared with the DEV group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, we demonstrated that MMP-1 and MMP-2 might be fundamental for events related to tissue remodeling, which occurs during follicular development until the formation of the dominant follicle. We also demonstrated the relationship between the gene expression of MMPs and the gene and protein expression of LHR, suggesting that LHR in the OSE might be an important factor to initiate the signaling cascade that culminates with the production of MMPs., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Background: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) remains a major cause of neonatal sepsis and is also associated with invasive and noninvasive infections in pregnant women and non-pregnant adults, elderly and patients with underlying medical conditions. Ten capsular serotypes have been recognized, and determination of their distribution within a specific population or geographical region is important as they are major targets for the development of vaccine strategies. We have evaluated the characteristics of GBS isolates recovered from individuals with infections or colonization by this microorganism, living in different geographic regions of Brazil., Methods: A total of 434 isolates were identified and serotyped by conventional phenotypic tests. The determination of antimicrobial susceptibility was performed by the disk diffusion method. Genes associated with resistance to erythromycin (ermA, ermB, mefA) and tetracycline (tetK, tetL, tetM, tetO) as well as virulence-associated genes (bac, bca, lmb, scpB) were investigated using PCR. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to examine the genetic diversity of macrolide-resistant and of a number of selected macrolide-susceptible isolates., Results: Overall, serotypes Ia (27.6%), II (19.1%), Ib (18.7%) and V (13.6%) were the most predominant, followed by serotypes IV (8.1%) and III (6.7%). All the isolates were susceptible to the beta-lactam antimicrobials tested and 97% were resistant to tetracycline. Resistance to erythromycin and clindamycin were found in 4.1% and 3% of the isolates, respectively. Among the resistance genes investigated, tetM (99.3%) and tetO (1.8%) were detected among tetracycline-resistant isolates and ermA (39%) and ermB (27.6%) were found among macrolide-resistant isolates. The lmb and scpB virulence genes were detected in all isolates, while bac and bca were detected in 57 (13.1%) and 237 (54.6%) isolates, respectively. Molecular typing by PFGE showed that resistance to erythromycin was associated with a variety of clones., Conclusion: These findings indicate that GBS isolates circulating in Brazil have a variety of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, and suggest that macrolide-resistant isolates may arise by both clonal spread and independent acquisition of resistance genes.

In the present study, 809 uterine flushes and 454 embryo transfers performed in mares over a 4-yr interval were examined to evaluate the effects of: (1) the day of embryo collection on recovery rates; (2) the degree of synchrony between donor and recipient mares on pregnancy rates; (3) the recipient day post ovulation on pregnancy rates; and (4) the age of the embryo at recovery on pregnancy rates at 60 days. Uterine flushes were performed on Days 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 (Day 0 = ovulation) and embryos were transferred to recipients with degrees of synchrony varying between +1 to -6 (recipient ovulated 1 day before through 6 days after the donor). Recipient mares ranged from 2 to 8 days post ovulation. Embryo recovery rates were similar for flushes performed on Day 7 (61%), Day 8 (66%), Day 9 (59%), and Day 10 (56%), but the embryo recovery rate was lower (P < 0.03) for flushes performed on Day 6 (42%) compared with all other days. Pregnancy rates for various degrees of synchrony were as follows: +1 (71%), 0 (77%), -1 (68%), -2 (63%), -3 (66%), -4 (76%), -5 (61%), and -6 (27%). The -6 day of degree of synchrony had the lowest (P < 0.05) pregnancy rate compared with all other days, but there was no significant difference among +1 to -5 days. There was a lower (P < 0.05) pregnancy rate for embryos transferred to recipient mares on Day 2 (33%) compared with mares on Day 3 (66%), Day 4 (66%), Day 5 (62%), Day 6 (55%), Day 7 (58%), and Day 8 (56%). Pregnancy rate was higher (P < 0.05) for Day 7 (76%) embryos compared with Day 6 (50%), Day 8 (64%), and Day 9 (44%) embryos; Day 9 embryos resulted in lower (P < 0.05) pregnancy rates than Days 7 or 8 embryos. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that: (1) embryo recovery rates between Days 7 and 10 were similar and acceptable (e.g., 63% 488/771); (2) the degree of synchrony between donor and recipient mares does not need to be as restricted as previously reported in horses. Acceptable pregnancy rates (e.g., 70%, 99/142) were obtained even when recipient mares ovulated 4 to 5 days after the donors; (3) similar pregnancy rates were obtained when recipient mares received embryos within a large range of days post ovulation (Days 3 to 8); and (4) Day 7 embryos produced higher pregnancy rates when compared with Days 8 and 9 embryos. This study sought to elicit a discussion about the significance of garbage from the standpoint of a group of municipal garbage collectors and garbage recyclers resident in Fortaleza, State of Ceará. Using qualitative methodology and the individual interview technique, this work presents the results of ongoing research that has been conducted together with the employees involved in the collection of household garbage in Fortaleza, State of Ceará, and those working in a plant for separating recyclable materials. During the period under analysis of the "world of garbage" eight interviews were staged. After transcription and interpretation of the interviews, it became clear that the respondents perceive garbage as being prejudicial to health (due to the various diseases it causes) and also as a means of survival (as a result of non-inclusion in the labor market due to lack of study and/or opportunity).

To investigate the influence of the C-factor (Cf) and light-curing mode (LCM) on gap formation in resin composite (RC) restorations. Cylindrical Class I cavities with a 5.0 mm diameter andthree different depths (1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mm) were prepared in the occlusal surfaces of 60 human molars and restored with P60 (P) and Supreme (Su). RCs were light-cured in accordance with two modes: Standard (S)--850mW/cm2/20 seconds and Ramp (R)-100 up to 1000mW/cm2/10 seconds +1000mW/cm2/10 seconds. After storage in distilled water, the restorations were cut into three slices and the gap widths were analyzed in a 3D-scanning system. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keul's test (alpha = 0.05). ANOVA detected significant influence for the RC, Cf and LCM independent factors and for the double interactions RC vs Cf and LCM vs Cf. Smaller gap formation was found for cavities restored with Su. R was responsible for the smaller gap formation. The highest gap formation was found for cavities with Cf = 3.4, followed by Cf = 2.6 and 1.8 without statistical differences between them. These findings suggest that Cf played an essential role in gap formation. R LCM may allow RC relaxation during polymerization reaction. Finally, nanocomposites (Su) may lead to less gap formation at the resin-dentin interface.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of C-factor and light-curing protocol on gap formation in composite resin restorations., Material and Methods: Cylindrical cavities with 5.0 mm diameter and three different depths (A=1.0, B=2.0 and C=3.0 mm) were prepared on the occlusal surface of 30 human molars and restored in a single increment with P 60. The composite resin was light-cured according to two protocols: standard - 850 mW/cm(2) / 20 s and gradual - 100 up to 1000 mW/cm(2) / 10 s + 1000 mW/cm(2) / 10 s. After storage in distilled water (37 degrees C/7 days), the restorations were cut into three slices in a buccolingual direction and the gap widths were analyzed using a 3D-scanning system. The data were submitted to ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls test (alpha=0.05)., Results: ANOVA detected a significant influence for the C-factor and light-curing protocol as independent factors, and for the double interaction C-factor vs. light-curing protocol. Cavities with higher C-factor presented the highest gap formation. The gradual light-curing protocol led to smaller gap formation at cavity interfaces., Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the C-factor played an essential role in gap formation. The gradual light-curing protocol may allow relaxation of composite resin restoration during polymerization reaction.

This study analyzed the influence of C-factor, flexural modulus and viscous flow on gap formation in resin composite restorations. Two resin composites, a mini-filled hybrid (P 60) and a nanofilled (Supreme), were used. The flexural modulus was obtained from bar-shaped specimens submitted to three-point bending. Viscous flow was obtained from the difference between the initial and final diameter of resin composite disks submitted to a load of 10 N for 120 seconds. Gap analysis was conducted in three types of cylindrical cavities (C-factor of 1.8, 2.6 and 3.4) that were prepared on the occlusal surfaces of human molars. The gap width at the dentin-resin composite interface was measured using a 3D scanning system (Talyscan 150). The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls' test, t-test and linear regression analysis (alpha = 0.05). The cavities with C-factor 3.4 presented the highest Gap formation (p < 0.0001). The lowest Gap formation was found in cavities restored with Supreme resin composite (p < 0.0001). P 60 presented significantly higher flexural modulus and lower viscous flow than Supreme (p < 0.0001). Regression analyses detected a significant influence of flexural modulus and viscous flow on gap formation (p < 0.05).

Industrial organic solvents present in glue are among the common used psychotropic drugs in Brazil and perhaps worldwide; but few data are available concerning the toxic effects of glue sniffing, with almost no information about immunotoxicity. This seems interesting because several drugs and environmental chemicals are recognized as potential immunotoxicants. The present study investigated the effects of forced inhalation of a toluene/n-hexane 1:1 mixture on hamster resistance to Mycobacterium bovis. Adult hamsters were divided at random into 3 equal groups. Animals of Groups E and E inhaled the mixture of toluene/n-hexane twice daily for 37 d. Group C was placed for the same period of time in identical chambers free of solvents. Two days after the beginning of the experiment, Groups E and C were injected ip with 0.5 ml of an activated suspension of M. bovis; Group E received the same volume of a control solution. Hamsters inhaling the toluene/n-hexane mixture (E) exhibited increased weight loss, increased scores of M. bovis colony forming units isolated from liver, lung and spleen, increased granulomatous areas in the liver, lung and spleen. Inhalation of the toluene/n-hexane mixture for 37 d also increased serum cortisol compared to control hamsters. Tuberculosis is an infection with an intracellular bacterium in which sensitivity is determined mainly by host response. The present data demonstrated impaired defense against M. bovis in hamsters inhaling a toluene/n-hexane mixture for 37 d. Since macrophages are the architectural and functional units of the granulomas in tuberculosis, and no data were found about glue solvent effects on cellular immunity, the present data suggest an indirect effect of glue solvents on macrophage/lymphocyte activity via stress induction and central nervous system stimulation of hormonal (ACTH/cortisol) secretion and/or autonomic nervous system activity.
