Introduction: Third-generation therapies (TGTs) have been shown to be effective in the treatment of substance use behaviors in college-aged adolescents. These therapies are based on acceptance, mindfulness and psychological flexibility, which enable young people to change their Psychoactive Substance Use (PSU)-related behaviours, develop coping skills to manage difficult emotions and thoughts, reduce experiential avoidance and maintain long-term abstinence., Objective: To explore the implementation and potential benefits of third-generation therapies, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness, for the treatment of PSU in college youth. This review includes articles within a 5-year window., Method: A scoping, observational and retrospective review was conducted using the PRISMA method in SCOPUS, PUBMED and Web of Science., Results: eight studies were found, six based on mindfulness, one on dialectical behaviour therapy and one on acceptance and commitment therapy. The results of the studies are promising and emerging for the intervention of the problem., Conclusion: The interventions used show evidence of reducing PSU and other mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress. In addition, they allowed patients to increase their well-being and mindfulness.

Background: Breathing and aerobic exercises are the most recommended nonpharmacological treatments to improve asthma control and quality of life in patients with asthma. However, the benefits of combining both interventions in these outcomes have never been tested., Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effects of the combination of aerobic and breathing exercises on asthma control in individuals with moderate-to-severe asthma., Methods: Individuals with moderate-to-severe asthma were randomly assigned to the aerobic + muscle-stretching group (control group n = 25) or aerobic + breathing exercises group (experimental group n = 26). The aerobic exercise was performed using constant-load training and breathing exercises using the Buteyko technique. The training program lasted 20 sessions. All individuals were blindly assessed before and after the interventions for asthma control, health-related quality of life, anxiety and depression symptoms, sleep quality, hyperventilation, exercise capacity, lung function, levels of physical activity, and thoracoabdominal kinematics. Group × time interactions were tested using a 2-way repeated measures analysis of variance. Pearson correlation test was used to test the association between outcomes., Results: The groups were similar at baseline (all P > .05). After the intervention, there were no between-group differences for all outcomes comparing the experimental group and the control group., Conclusions: These results suggest that a combination of aerobic and breathing exercises did not improve asthma control, psychosocial symptoms, sleep quality, hyperventilation, exercise capacity, lung function, or levels of daily physical or thoracoabdominal kinematics compared with aerobic exercise alone in individuals with moderate-to-severe asthma., (Copyright © 2024 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Background/objectives: The literature on consumption of ultra-processed food (UPF) using the NOVA classification is still limited. Therefore, the aim of the present study was twofold: (i) to compare the UPF consumption, sedentary behaviors, and well-being perception between boys and girls; and (ii) to investigate the association between the UPF consumption and risk of overweight, sedentary behaviors, and well-being in adolescents., Methods: The present cross-sectional study comprised a sample of 245 adolescents (131 boys) aged 12-17 years-old ( M = 14.20; SD = 1.09). Height and weight were assessed, and subsequently, the BMI was computed; furthermore, total body fat percentage was measured with bioelectrical impedance. Daily consumption of UPF was assessed by the NOVA screener and time spent sedentary was assessed by the Midlands Behavior Health 2024 questionnaire. The Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) was used to measure adolescents' psychosocial well-being. Pearson's correlations and logistic regression analysis were used, controlling for biological, behavioral, and socio-economic confounders., Results: No sex differences were observed for the different UPF NOVA subscales. Boys reported higher computer use levels than girls on the weekend ( p = 0.025), and they spent more time playing electronic games during the week ( p = 0.005) and on the weekend than their female counterparts ( p < 0.001). Moreover, boys reported higher scores in all well-being dimensions ( p < 0.001) than girls., Conclusions: The findings revealed, after controlling for sex, sedentary time, and active behaviors, adolescents who consumed UPF on the previous day tended to be associated with a higher risk of being overweight, but also marginally without statistical significance (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.83-1.01, p = 0.06). Of relevance, the present study revealed that both boys and girls of mothers with high educational levels were less likely to be classified as overweight or obese youth.

In light of the complex origins of ectopic vascular calcification and its significant health implications, this study offers a comprehensive exploration of the molecular dynamics governing vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Focusing on epigenetic modulation, we investigate the transition from a contractile to a calcifying phenotype in VSMCs, with an emphasis on understanding the role of SIRT1. For this purpose, a single batch of human aortic SMCs, used at a specified passage number to maintain consistency, was subjected to calcium and phosphate overload for up to 72 h. Our findings, validated through RT q-PCR, Western blot, immunofluorescence, and DNA methylation analyses, reveal a complex interplay between acetyltransferases and deacetylases during this phenotypic transition. We highlight HAT1A's critical role in histone acetylation regulation and the involvement of HDACs, as evidenced by subcellular localization studies. Moreover, we demonstrate the modulation of SIRT1 expression, a class III deacetylase, during VSMC calcification, underscoring the influence of DNA methylation in this process. Importantly, the study addresses previously unexplored aspects of the dynamic protein expression patterns observed, providing insight into the counterintuitive expressions of key proteins such as Runx2 and osterix. Refractory black carbon (rBC) has great potential to increase melting when deposited on snow and ice surfaces. Previous studies attributed sources and impacts of rBC in the northern Antarctic Peninsula region by investigating long-range atmospheric transport from South Hemisphere biomass burning and industrial regions or by assessing impacts from local tourism and research activities. We used high-resolution measurements of refractory rBC in a firn core collected near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, as well as atmospheric rBC from Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2, satellite measurements, modeling, burned area data, and tourism statistics, to assess combined impacts of both long-range transported rBC and locally emitted rBC. Our findings suggest that tourism activities have a regional rather than local impact and the increase in rBC concentrations during late spring-summer, influenced by tourism activities and fires in the Southern Hemisphere, can enhance ice melt. This highlights the need for strategies to reduce local and distant rBC emissions.

Background: Stroke management requires a coordinated strategy, adhering to clinical pathways (CP) and value-based healthcare (VBHC) principles from onset to rehabilitation. However, the discrepancies between these pathways and actual patient experiences highlight the need for ongoing monitoring and addressing interoperability issues across multiple institutions in stroke care. To address this, the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR) Implementation Guide (IG) standardizes the information exchange among these systems, considering a specific context of use., Objective: Develop an FHIR IG for stroke care rooted in established stroke CP and VBHC principles., Method: We represented the stroke patient journey by considering the core stroke CP, the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) dataset for stroke, and a Brazilian case study using the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN). Next, we developed a data dictionary that aligns variables with existing FHIR resources and adapts profiling from the Brazilian National Health Data Network (BNHDN)., Results: Our BPMN model encompassed three critical phases that represent the entire patient journey from symptom onset to rehabilitation. The stroke data dictionary included 81 variables, which were expressed as questionnaires, profiles, and extensions. The FHIR IG comprised nine pages: Home, Stroke-CP, Data Dictionary, FHIR, ICHOM, Artifacts, Examples, Downloads, and Security. We developed 96 artifacts, including 7 questionnaires, 27 profiles with corresponding example instances, 3 extensions, 18 value sets, and 14 code systems pertinent to ICHOM outcome measures., Conclusion: The FHIR IG for stroke in this study represents a significant advancement in healthcare interoperability, streamlining the tracking of patient outcomes for quality enhancement, facilitating informed treatment choices, and enabling the development of dashboards to promote collaborative excellence in patient care., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024. Background: Capsaicin, a bioactive compound found in peppers, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-lipidemic properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of capsaicin on atherosclerosis progression., Methods: Apolipoprotein E knockout mice and their C57BL/6 controls were utilized to assess blood lipid profile, inflammatory status, and atherosclerotic lesions. We also examined the influence of capsaicin on cholesterol influx and efflux, and the role of TRPV1 and PPARγ signaling pathways in bone marrow-derived macrophages., Results: Capsaicin treatment reduced weight gain, visceral adiposity, blood triglycerides, and total and non-HDL cholesterol. These improvements were associated with a reduction in atherosclerotic lesions in the aorta and carotid. Capsaicin also improved hepatic oxidative and inflammatory status. Systemic inflammation was also reduced, as indicated by reduced leukocyte rolling and adhesion on the mesenteric plexus. Capsaicin decreased foam cell formation by reducing cholesterol influx through scavenger receptor A and increasing cholesterol efflux via ATP-binding cassette transporter A1, an effect primarily linked to TRPV1 activation., Conclusions: These findings underscore the potential of capsaicin as a promising agent for atherosclerosis prevention, highlighting its comprehensive role in modulating lipid metabolism, foam cell formation, and inflammatory responses.

Objectives: To investigate the association among sun exposure time, vitamin D intake, dietary patterns, and socioeconomic status in Portuguese children., Methods: Participants aged 3-11 years (50.1% females) were recruited from public and private schools (n = 118) in the districts of Coimbra (n = 2980), Lisbon (n = 3066), and Porto (n = 2426). Parents reported their children's daily sun exposure time during the summer season and reported children's food consumption, including vitamin D food sources, using standardized questionnaires. Parents' education level was used as a proxy measure to the socioeconomic status (SES). The principal component factor analysis (PCA) method was used to identify dietary patterns. The eight dietary patterns identified were labeled in: "fast food", "rich in vitamin D", "sugary drinks", "vitamin D", "candies", "supplements", "rich in calcium" and "vegetables/healthy". Linear regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between sun exposure time and dietary patterns according to SES., Results: A total of 4755 children were included. Children from high SES had significantly longer sun exposure time (p < .001) and more frequently consumed vitamin D supplements (p < .001). "Fast food" pattern showed a negative association with sun exposure time in medium and high SES (p = .014 and p < .001, respectively)., Conclusion: Children with lower SES spend less time exposed to the sun, consume fewer dietary sources of vitamin D, and consume more foods rich in fat and sugar., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Entangled photon-pair sources are at the core of quantum applications like quantum key distribution, sensing, and imaging. Operation in space-limited and adverse environments such as in satellite-based and mobile communication requires robust entanglement sources with minimal size and weight requirements. Here, we meet this challenge by realizing a cubic micrometer scale entangled photon-pair source in a 3R-stacked transition metal dichalcogenide crystal. Its crystal symmetry enables the generation of polarization-entangled Bell states without additional components and provides tunability by simple control of the pump polarization. Remarkably, generation rate and state tuning are decoupled, leading to equal generation efficiency and no loss of entanglement. Combining transition metal dichalcogenides with monolithic cavities and integrated photonic circuitry or using quasi-phasematching opens the gate towards ultrasmall and scalable quantum devices., (© 2024.
