While Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) research has at its core the desire to support student learning, experience from other AI domains suggest that such ethical intentions are not by themselves sufficient. There is also the need to consider explicitly issues such as fairness, accountability, transparency, bias, autonomy, agency, and inclusion. At a more general level, there is also a need to differentiate between "doing ethical things" and "doing things ethically," to understand and to make pedagogical choices that are ethical, and to account for the ever-present possibility of unintended consequences. However, addressing these and related questions is far from trivial. As a first step towards addressing this critical gap, we invited 60 of the AIED community's leading researchers to respond to a survey of questions about ethics and the application of AI in educational contexts. In this paper, we first introduce issues around the ethics of AI in education. Next, we summarise the contributions of the 17 respondents, and discuss the complex issues that they raised. Specific outcomes include the recognition that most AIED researchers are not trained to tackle the emerging ethical questions. A well-designed framework for engaging with ethics of AIED that combined a multidisciplinary approach and a set of robust guidelines seems vital in this context.

This research studied the wastewater chromium removal efficiency by dissolved air flotation (DAF) using a rhamnolipid (RL) biosurfactant as a collector. An experimental flotation DAF apparatus with 6 vessels of 2 L containing a coupled saturator injecting compressed air at 5.88 kPa in the vessels was used. The total RL concentration of the broth resulting from fermentation was 9 ± 1.0 g/L. This broth was used in nature in the DAF experiments. A central composite design (CCD) was used to optimize removal of Cr(VI) and total Cr with regards to two independent variables, pH (3.17–8.83) and iron concentration of the medium (0–225.0 mg/L), with a three assays performed at the conditions of the central point of the design. The experimental conditions for DAF were an initial hexavalent Cr concentration of 100 mg/L; RL broth volume of 500 mL; saturated with oxygen water volume of 200 mL; and a rapid mixing time of 6 min through stirring at 120 rpm. The results showed that under acidic pH conditions and with high iron concentrations, both the Cr(VI) and total Cr removal rates were highest. The optimal removal region determination was at a pH of 3.5 and iron concentration of 180 mg/L. Subsequently, cationic tannin‐based flocculant was also evaluated as a collector, and ferrous sulfate was used as a coagulant during Cr(III) removal. The best Cr(III) removal percentage was obtained at cationic polymer concentrations of 300 mg/L with Cr(III) removal of 50.8% and a pH of 5.5. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adaptive LMS have not yet reached the eLearning marketplace due to methodological, technological and management open issues. At aDeNu group, we have been working on two key challenges for the last five years in related research projects. Firstly, develop the general framework and a running architecture to support the adaptive life cycle (i.e., design, publication, use and monitoring), which focuses on a user-centred experience. Secondly, construct the required models based on standards to support adaptive learning scenarios which combine IMS-based design solutions and intelligent analysis of users' interactions. In this paper we describe the design rationale of the developed architecture, the user modelling approach and the main experimentation results at aLFanet project. Furthermore, we introduce our current research works on key open issues i) automatic generation of IMS-LD designs (ADAPTAPlan) and ii) how to extend those models to cope with accessibility and functional diversity issues to provide services for "all", which take into account pedagogical and psychological issues (EU4ALL). Fouling of heat exchangers in the chemical industry, oil & gas industry, district heating, power plants, among others, results in a loss of performance which leads to production stops for cleaning and therefore increased operation costs. One approach to mitigate fouling is to alter the properties of the metal surface. A coating to be successful in any plate heat exchanger (PHE) application needs to have a good adhesion to the metal but also keep the heat transfer through the metal plates as unaltered as possible. This requires a thin coating with a relatively good thermal conductivity. The plates in a PHE are subjected to plate-to-plate contact point wear when in operation which also puts an extra requirement for the coating. To be suitable, the coating needs to have a good mechanical stability to resist this plate-to-plate wear. Alfa Laval has a long experience in coating plates for diverse applications and in this paper two case studies will be presented. One in the paper industry and the other in the biofuel industry. A new type of multilayer Teflon™ coating from Chemours was used, specifically designed to show excellent fouling release properties along with limited thicknesses (30–50 microns). This paper argues that the research field of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) can benefit from integrating recent technological advances (e.g., wearable devices, big data processing, 3D modelling, 3D printing, ambient intelligence) and design methodologies, such as TORMES, when developing systems that address the psychomotor learning domain. In particular, the acquisition of motor skills could benefit from individualized instruction and support just as cognitive skills learning has over the last decades. To this point, procedural learning has been considered since the earliest days of AIED (dating back to the 1980's). However, AIED developments in motor skills learning have lagged significantly behind. As technology has evolved, and supported by the do-it-yourself and quantified-self movements, it is now possible to integrate emerging interactive technologies in order to provide personal awareness and reflection for behavioural change at low cost and with low intrusion. Many activities exist that would benefit from personalizing motor skills learning, such as playing a musical instrument, handwriting, drawing, training for surgery, improving the technique in sports and martial arts, learning sign language, dancing, etc. In this context, my suggestions for AIED research in the coming 25 years focus on addressing challenges regarding 1) modelling the psychomotor interaction, and 2) providing appropriate personalized psychomotor support.

The aim of this study is to observe how women of different ages represent their bodies and the changes they undergo across their life course. The research is based on the theory of social representations, idealized by Serge Moscovici. A total of 201 women between 25 and 88 years old from southern Brazil participated in the research. The methodological instrument consists of a questionnaire containing free associations, sentence completion and selection of images. The processing and classification of the data were done by the software Evoc (2000) and content analysis. The results showed differences between the age groups. Younger women represented the body according to aesthetic references and manifested the desire to monitor the body. Older women related the body more frequently with notions of health, social relationships, and leisure. The memories of a younger body and anticipations of an older one reflected the conventions about ageing. The study also shows that concerns about bodily limitations and age-related diseases were frequent in all age groups and may guide behaviour and attitudes towards the body. The study can inform policymakers on the needs and expectations of a growing ageing sector of the population in Brazil and worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Pilates training intervention programs have gained attention as a potential approach to enhancing balance in older adults, thereby reducing the risk of falls. In light of these considerations, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to critically evaluate the existing evidence and determine the effect of Pilates training intervention programs on older adults' balance. Materials and Methods: The literature was searched through the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception until July 2023. The primary keywords used for the literature search included "elderly" or "older adults" and "pilates training" and "balance". Results: The systematic review through qualitative analysis showed robust evidence about the efficacy of Pilates intervention programs in improving older adults' balance. The pooled meta-analysis of static and dynamic balance showed that eight (53%) out of a total fifteen analyzed interventions presented a significant effect of Pilates in improving the participants' balance, without between-study heterogeneity. In addition, the meta-analysis regarding dynamic balance showed that six (67%) out of nine analyzed interventions presented a significant effect of Pilates in improving the participants' balance, without heterogeneity between studies. Similarly, the meta-analysis regarding static balance showed that four (50%) out of eight analyzed studies presented significant effects on the older adults' balance, where moderate between-study heterogeneity was found. Sensitivity analysis showed that three studies reduced the between-study heterogeneity (19, 17.6, and 17%), regressing from moderate to low heterogeneity, p < 0.05. Conclusions: This systematic review and meta-analysis underscores the potential of Pilates training as a valuable intervention to enhance balance in the elderly population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
