The US and Mexico share a common history in many areas, including language and culture. They face ecological changes due to the increased frequency and severity of droughts and rising energy demands; trends that entail economic costs for both nations and major implications for human wellbeing. We describe an ongoing effort by the Environment Working Group (EWG), created by The University of California's UC-Mexico initiative in 2015, to promote binational research, teaching, and outreach collaborations on the implications of climate change for Mexico and California. We synthesize current knowledge about the most pressing issues related to climate change in the US-Mexico border region and provide examples of cross-border discoveries and research initiatives, highlighting the need to move forward in six broad rubrics. This and similar binational cooperation efforts can lead to improved living standards, generate a collaborative mindset among participating universities, and create an international network to address urgent sustainability challenges affecting both countries.

Meat is an important food in the human diet due to its content in proteins, lipids and micronutrients, and, on the other hand, certain components such as saturated fatty acids, cholesterol and purines are harmful. can cause health problems. The factors that determine meat consumption are complex, for example, demography, income, price, tradition and culture, religious beliefs, as well as environmental, social, ethical and health concerns, can affect the degree of ingestion. In this context, the expected population growth in the coming decades, associated with intensive production and unbridled consumption of meat, may jeopardize the sustainability of the food system, food security and the future of the planet. There is scientifically proven evidence that the current food system, dependent on a global and intensive agricultural sector, contributes to the global warming of the Earth and the consequent climate change. In this way, it is necessary to look for solutions to mitigate the production and consumption of meat of animal origin, so the implementation of alternative proteins can be one of the possible solutions. In this sense, cultured meat presents itself as a viable alternative, being produced from animal stem cells, so it is not necessary to raise animals for later slaughter. The production of cultured meat has numerous advantages, for example, the reduction of the consumption of resources such as water, energy and soil, when compared to the production of meat in agriculture. However, it also has some limitations and challenges, such as food neophobia on the part of consumers and the price of cultured meat, which is dependent on the large-scale production process. The knowledge of the human being in relation to the problems associated with traditional agriculture, as well as the perception and acceptance of consumers in relation to cultured meat are fundamental for the implementation of cultured meat as a food product, being relevant to evaluate the pattern of meat consumption by consumers., in this case, the Portuguese. The perception and acceptance of Portuguese consumers are key factors for the entry of this new product in the Portuguese market, and the present study intends to observe the current pattern of consumption of conventional meat by the Portuguese, to observe the degree of concern regarding the various related problems. with the food system, to analyze the degree of knowledge and perception of consumers about cultured meat. In this sense, an online survey was developed aimed at internet users, which was distributed through social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp) and by email. The applied questionnaire survey was structured in 6 sections and consisted of 24 questions, with multiple choice questions, questions with check boxes, short answer and linear scale questions being asked to the participants. Two short videos were also made available to the participants, which were optional and lasted about two to five minutes each, with the objective of clarifying the less informed participants. With regard to the content of the questionnaire survey, questions of a sociodemographic nature were addressed, as well as issues related to traditional farming, the participants' eating habits and questions related to the field of information on cultured meat. The collected data were processed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0.0, using basic exploratory data analysis techniques. In the results presented, it was observed that 91.9% of the participants admit to consuming conventional meat, so only 2.4% follow a vegetarian diet and 1.3% a vegan diet, and in general, 8.0% refer not to consume meat, taking into account other alternative diets On the other hand, despite the fact that cultured meat is not yet commercialized in Portugal, more than half of the sample (55.2%) admitted to being more or less familiar with the subject, having It was observed that 59.0% of the participants were willing to try cultured meat.

Avian adenovirus type 1 (FAdV) is considered an important pathogen for the poultry industry. Serotypes 4 (FAdV4) and 8b (FAdV-8b) are responsible for Inclusion Body Hepatitis (IBH) and Hydropericardium Syndrome (HHS) in chickens and are prevalent in Perú. The objective of this work was to establish a standardized protocol for obtaining inactivated viral inoculum of FAdV-4 and FAdV-8b produced in chicken hepatoma (LMH) cells. For this, LMH cells at 70 % confluence, grown in DMEM medium with 10 % fetal bovine serum, were infected with FAdV-4 or FAdV-8b to evaluate the optimal multiplicity of infection (MOI) value and harvest time. Then, the production of 1L of both serotypes was carried out considering an MOI of 10 and a harvest time of 96 h postinfection (hpi). Next, both viral harvests were clarified and concentrated by tangential ultrafiltration (UFT) on a 100kDa membrane and inactivated with 30mM Binary Ethyleneimine (BEI) at 37°C for 18 h. Loss of infectivity was corroborated by calculating the 50 % cell culture infectious dose (TCID50). Our results showed that with an MOI of 10 and a harvest time of 96 hpi, the highest viral titer was reached (> 1x108 TCID50/mL). In addition, it was shown that UFT allowed concentrating 10 times the amount of virus with a 91% recovery rate and that inactivation with BEI was efficient. The inactivated inoculum obtained can be used in the formulation of a vaccine to safely prevent IBH and HHS in chickens. EEA Balcarce Fil: Flores Santos, Juan Carlos. - Abstract
This work carries out the sentiment analysis of the social network Twitter regarding the presidential debate on May 23, where a hashtag was left open so viewers could give their points of view on these three candidates: Gustavo Petro, Federico Gutierrez, and Rodolfo Hernández. Once we extracted these Tweets contained in the hashtag, they were manually classified. They then went through all the pre-processing and elimination of special characters, links, URLs, images, or videos. Next, the TextVectorization layer from the TensorFlow library was used to convert these tweets to vectors and finally to go through the two models. The results show the best results for the BERT model with an accuracy of 76% and an F1 score of 85%.

- Abstract
White Band Disease (WBD) is one of the most harmful coral syndromes in the Caribbean, deteriorating the structure of many corals during the eighties and nineties. Since its etiology is not entirely known, the use of techniques aimed a t identifying the associated agents could provide an approach to the composition of the populations involved in the deterioration of A. cervicornis. Therefore, this research's objective was to isolate and characterize bacteria associated with WBD in A. cervicornis from hanging nurseries of Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park, Colombia, using MALDI-TO F MS and PCR. The results showed the presence of Bacillus cereus bacteria in individuals with bleaching signs from nurseries and transplant areas on Isla Tesoro and Isla Ceiner. One of these strains sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed was closely related t o Bacillus thuringiensis, with similarities of up to 99%. The presence of B. cereus could indicate a special relationship between this microorganism and WBD. However, it is imperative to carry out more studies on identifying the bacteria associated with this disease to support these findings. © 2022 Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions. - Abstract
Since they transform electrical energy into mechanical energy, three-phase induction motors are one of the main assets that companies have. Therefore, good monitoring of their conditions and diagnosing their faults is essential. In this article, we propose a curve fitting technique and classification algorithms for a current motor phase to detect broken bars inside the motor. The data set is in the IEEE database, where the data was acquired, simulating the conditions of healthy and broken bars by varying the load condition. The curve fitting technique gives me essential attributes such as the signal's amplitude, frequency, and phase shift, supported by the Fourier transform, which informs how the signal power is a function of frequency. Furthermore, we extracted attributes to train the classifiers, achieving 85% accuracy in classifying the number of broken bars within the engine. © 2022 IEEE.

The paradigm of Quantum computing and artificial intelligence has been growing steadily in recent years and given the potential of this technology by recognizing the computer as a physical system that can take advantage of quantum mechanics for solving problems faster, more efficiently, and accurately. We suggest experimentation of this potential through an architecture of different quantum models computed in parallel. In this work, we present encouraging results of how it is possible to use Quantum Processing Units analogically to Graphics Processing Units to accelerate algorithms and improve the performance of machine learning models through three experiments. The first experiment was a reproduction of a parity function, allowing us to see how the convergence of a given Quantum model is influenced significantly by computing it in parallel. For the second and third experiments, we implemented an image classification problem by training quantum neural networks and using pre-trained models to compare their performances with the same experiments carried out with parallel quantum computations. We obtained very similar results in the accuracies, which were close to 100% and significantly improved the execution time, approximately 15 times faster in the best-case scenario. We also propose an alternative as a proof of concept to address emotion recognition problems using optimization algorithms and how execution times can be positively affected by parallel quantum computation. To do this, we use tools such as the cross-platform software library PennyLane and Amazon Web Services to access high-end simulators with Amazon Braket and IBM quantum experience.
