Chemical desiccation is widely used in agriculture to anticipate harvest and mitigate the effects of adverse environmental conditions. It is applied to both grains and seeds. Although this practice is widely used, there are still significant gaps in understanding the effects of different herbicide application times on seed quality and plant physiological responses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different herbicide application times on cowpea, focusing on seed quality, physiological responses, and biochemical composition, including chlorophylls, carotenoids, sugars, and proline, under nocturnal desiccation. In the first experiment, eight herbicides and two mixtures were applied at night: diquat, flumioxazin, diquat + flumioxazin, glufosinate ammonium, saflufenacil, carfentrazone, diquat + carfentrazone, atrazine, and glyphosate. All of the tested herbicides caused a reduction in normal seedling formation, with the diquat + carfentrazone combination resulting in 100% abnormal seedlings. A significant decrease in chlorophyll levels (chlorophyll a: 63.5%, chlorophyll b: 50.2%) was observed using diquat, which indicates damage to photosynthetic processes, while the carotenoid content increased. Total soluble sugars and proline were also negatively impacted, reflecting physiological stress and metabolic changes in seedlings. In the second experiment, three application times were tested with diquat, diquat + flumioxazin, and diquat + carfentrazone. Nocturnal application showed the most significant reduction in chlorophyll levels and increased carotenoid levels. Application at noon and late afternoon also significantly changed the soluble sugar and proline levels. These results indicate that the herbicide application time directly influences the seeds' physiological quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brassinosteroid is a hormone that in addition to favoring the growth and development of the plant is pointed out as attenuator of the negative effects caused by water stress in vegetables. The papaya has socioeconomic importance and the water deficit is a limiting factor to its growth, therefore, it was aimed to evaluate the effects caused by the application of epibrassinolide (C28H48O6), a brassinosteroid analogue, during the vegetative phase of the papaya under different irrigation slides. The experiment was conducted in the experimental field belonging to the State University of Paraíba, Catolé do Rocha -PB campus, using the Hawaí variety. In factorial scheme 5x2, with four blocks and five irrigation slides (60, 80, 100, 120, 140% of reference evapotranspiration-ET0), with brassinosteroid (concentration 1.0 mg L-1) and without brassinosteroid. The hormone was applied via the leaves at 60 days after transplanting for two consecutive days, this procedure being carried out inside a closed chamber and using a manual sprayer, 35 days after the complete exposure of the plants to the treatments, parameters were evaluated. at which it was found that there was a significant interactive effect between the factors studied (blades x hormone) in most of the variables evaluated. Smaller irrigation depths promoted lower height, diameter, number of leaves, leaf area and root volume of papaya seedlings. The use of 100% of the reference evapotranspiration provided greater height, stem and root moisture. The application of 1.0 mg L-1 of the hormone optimized plant growth in the seedling production phase, however, it did not alleviate the harmful effects of the water deficit. KEYWORDS: Carica papaya L., water deficit, phytohormone RESUMO: O brassinosteróide é um hormônio que além de favorecer o crescimento e desenvolvimento da planta é apontado como atenuante de efeitos negativos provocados pelo estresse hídrico em vegetais. O mamoeiro apresenta importância socioeconômica e o déficit hídrico é um fator limitante ao seu crescimento, logo, objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos causados pela aplicação do epibrassinolide (C28H48O6), um análogo do brassinosteróide, durante a fase vegetativa do mamoeiro sob diferentes lâminas de irrigação. O experimento foi conduzido em campo no setor experimental pertencente à Universidade Estadual da Paraíba, campus Catolé do Rocha –PB, utilizando-se a variedade Hawaí. Empregou-se esquema fatorial 5x2, com quatro blocos, sendo cinco lâminas de irrigação (60, 80, 100, 120, 140% da evapotranspiração de referência-ET0), com brassinosteróide (concentração 1,0 mg L-1) e sem brassinosteróide. A aplicação do hormônio foi efetuada via foliar aos 60 dias após o transplante por dois dias consecutivos, realizando-se esse procedimento dentro de uma câmara fechada e por meio de um pulverizador manual, 35 dias após a completa exposição das plantas aos tratamentos foram avaliados parâmetros de crescimento aos quais constatou-se que houve efeito significativo interativo entre os fatores estudados (lâminas x hormônio) na maioria das variáveis avaliadas. Menores lâminas de irrigação promoveram menor altura, diâmetro, número de folhas, área foliar e volume radicular das mudas de mamoeiro. O uso de 100% da evapotranspiração de referência proporcionou maior altura, umidade caulinar e radicular. A aplicação de 1,0 mg L-1 do hormônio otimizou o crescimento das plantas na fase de produção de mudas, porém, não amenizou efeitos deletérios do déficit hídrico. No entanto, o seu potencial produtivo inicial, assim como na maioria das curcubitáceas, é dependende de uma adequada polinização. Os hormônios sintéticos são utilizados com o intuito de incrementar o rendimento das culturas, destacando-se aqueles que atuam no estímulo à frutificação como citocininas e auxinas. Sabendo-se que a cultura da abóbora depende de agentes polinizadores e que estes hormônios podem colaborar com a frutificação partenocárpica, objetivou-se por meio deste estudo induzir a frutificação em abóbora por meio de diferentes formas de aplicação na planta e combinações de citocinina CPPU e auxina AIB. O trabalho foi desenvolvido nas dependências do Centro de Ciências e Tecnologia Agroalimentar, da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Campus Pombal-PB, entre os meses de Março a Junho de 2018. As sementes de abóbora Atlas foram semeadas em bandejas de isopor de 128 células para produção de mudas e após atingirem duas folhas definitivas, foram transplantadas em vasos com capacidade de 2 L, preenchidos com fibra de coco e substrato comercial Tropstrato HT Hortaliças® na proporção 3:1. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de seis proporções associadas dos reguladores de crescimento, correspondendo a 0/0 (testemunha); 0/100; 25/75; 50/50; 75/25; 100/0% das concentrações 2,5 e 10,0 mg L-1 de CPPU/AIB, respectivamente, e de duas formas de aplicação: via ovário e foliar. O delineamento experimental empregado foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Aos 72 dias após o transplantio (DAT) foram realizadas análises de pigmentos foliares, de crescimento e acúmulo de massa seca nas plantas: clorofilas a, b, total e carotenoides das folhas, área foliar, número de folhas, diâmetro do caule, número de ramos, comprimento da haste principal e raiz, massa seca de folhas, ramos, raízes, frutos e total, foram também avaliadas as características de crescimento e qualidade dos frutos: massa fresca, diâmetro do bojo, diâmetro do pescoço, espessura da polpa no bojo e no pescoço, firmeza, sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, potencial hidrogeniônico, açúcares totais, vitamina C, carotenoides e amido. Concluiu-se que a proporção 50/50% por via foliar eleva o conteúdo de carotenoides nas folhas. As proporções 25/75 e 50/50% aplicadas por via foliar foram as que mais favoreceram parâmetros de crescimento das plantas. O uso da 0/100% via ovário estimula o crescimento e acúmulo de massa da raiz, mas não promove a frutificação. As proporções 50/50% via foliar e 75/25% via ovário, respectivamente, foram as que mais incrementaram o crescimento e parâmetros de qualidade dos frutos. A aplicação do CPPU via foliar em maior concentração na proporção (100/0%) diminui características de qualidade como: vitamina C, carotenoides e amido. The culture of the pumpkin is of great economic and social expression in Brazil. However, its initial productive potential, as in most curcubitaceae, is dependent on proper pollination. Synthetic hormones are used in order to increase the yield of crops, especially those that act to stimulate fruiting, such as cytokinins and auxins. Since it is known that the pumpkin culture depends on pollinating agents and that these hormones can collaborate with parthenocarpic fruiting, it was objectified by means of this study induce fruiting in squash by means of different forms of application in the plant and combinations of cytokinin CPPU and auxin AIB. The work was carried out in the premises of the Agro-Food Science and Technology Center, Federal University of Campina Grande, Campus Pombal-PB, between the months of March and June 2018. Atlas pumpkin seeds were sown in Styrofoam trays of 128 cells for the production of seedlings and after reaching two final leaves, were transplanted in pots with a capacity of 2 L, filled with coconut fiber and Tropstrato HT Hortaliças® commercial substrate in the proportion 3: 1. The treatments were composed of six proportions associated with the growth regulators, corresponding to 0/0 (control); 0/100; 25/75; 50/50; 75/25; 100/0% of the concentrations 2.5 and 10.0 mg L-1 of CPPU/AIB, respectively, and of two forms of application: via ovary and foliar. The experimental design was a randomized block design, with four replications. At 72 days after transplanting (DAT), leaf pigment, growth and dry matter accumulation analyzes were performed in the plants: chlorophyll a, b, total and leaf carotenoids, leaf area, leaf number, stem diameter, number of leaves roots, root and root length, dry mass of leaves, branches, roots, fruits and total, the fruit growth and quality characteristics were also evaluated: fresh mass, bore diameter, neck diameter, and neck, firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, hydrogenation potential, total sugars, vitamin C, carotenoids and starch. It was concluded that the proportion 50/50% by foliar raises the content of carotenoids in the leaves. The proportions 25/75 and 50/50% applied by foliar route were the ones that favored plant growth parameters. The use of 0/100% via ovary stimulates the growth and accumulation of root mass, but does not promote fruiting. The proportions 50/50% via foliar and 75/25% via ovary, respectively, were the ones that increased the growth and fruit quality parameters. The application of CPPU via foliar in higher concentration in proportion (100/0%) decreases quality characteristics such as vitamin C, carotenoids and starch.

The forestation of cities presents countless advantages among the ones which improvement of the microclimate and well to be population. However, the planning lack and knowledge of the responsible public power for that process can provoke effects contrary to those wanted. With that, the objective of this work consisted of evaluating the perception of the local population as the qualification of the forestation in the city of Pombal, Paraíba, in the intention of like this to collect necessary information to the future and correct arboreal planning of this urban center. For that, they were applied semi-structured questionnaires containing 11 objective questions, where four questions were to characterize the interviewees' profile in relation to the sex, age, education level and main activity, and the seven remaining questions included the subjects regarding the forestation of the municipal district, reaching this way a public of 200 people. The city of Pombal-PB is reasonably wooded and they still present problems with electric and phone nets due to lack of correct planning of the responsible public organs. The population notices the benefits of the forestation affirming that the arboreal ones existent they especially favor the shadow and temperature reduction. A arborização de cidades apresenta inúmeras vantagens dentre as quais melhoria do microclima e bem estar populacional. No entanto, a falta de planejamento e conhecimento do poder público responsável por esse processo pode provocar efeitos contrários aos desejados. Com isso, o objetivo com este trabalho consistiu em avaliar a percepção da população local quanto a qualificação da arborização na cidade de Pombal, Paraíba, no intuito de coletar informações necessárias ao futuro e correto planejamento arbóreo deste centro urbano. Para isso, foram aplicados questionários semiestruturados contendo 11 perguntas objetivas, onde quatro eram para caracterizar o perfil dos entrevistados em relação ao sexo, idade, nível de escolaridade e atividade principal, e as sete restantes abrangiam as questões referentes à arborização do município, atingindo desta forma um público de 200 pessoas. A cidade de Pombal - PB encontra-se razoavelmente arborizada e ainda apresenta problemas com redes elétricas e telefônicas devido a falta de correto planejamento pelos órgãos públicos responsáveis. A população percebe os benefícios da arborização afirmando que as arbóreas existentes favorecem em especial a sombra e redução de temperatura.
