The genus Leptospermum (Myrtaceae) is widespread in Australia and contains several species that are of increasing interest to produce bioactive honey. Here, we used the Maxent algorithm to investigate bioclimatic, climatic, and soil variables as predictors for potential distributions of seven Leptospermum species that have been identified as useful for bioactive honey production in Australia (L. lanigerum, L. liversidgei, L. nitens, L. polygalifolium, L. scoparium, L. speciosum, and L. whitei). Bioclimatic and climatic variables, mainly those related to moist conditions, were the best predictors for the distribution of the species. Leptospermum lanigerum and L. scoparium were suitable species in areas in southwestern Australia and Tasmania, while L. polygalifolium was suitable for eastern Australia. For L. nitens, appropriate areas were found only in western and southern regions, whereas only border ranges in Queensland and New South Wales were considered suitable for L. liversidgei, L. speciosum, and L. whitei. Notably, the latter areas were identified as a potential ‘hotspot’ for Leptospermum species. Our study can assist the incipient Leptospermum honey industry in Australia in identifying suitable local species and the local maintenance requirements for the species chosen.

Nesta tese nós apresentamos evidências sobre o papel do clima na história natural da borboleta neotropical Ascia monuste orseis Godart (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). No primeiro capítulo, nós mostramos que a ocorrência desta espécie em cultivos agrícolas é favorecida por condições quentes e úmidas, uma vez que a baixa temperatura e umidade foram prejudiciais para o desenvolvimento dos estágios imaturos da espécie (i.e., ovo, larva e pupa). Em seguida, nós investigamos como as variações climáticas podem afetar as causas naturais de mortalidade dos estágios imaturos. Assim, no segundo capítulo, nossos resultados indicaram que as variações de temperatura, umidade relativa e precipitação afetaram a mortalidade causada por chuva, falhas e predação. A mortalidade ocasionada pela chuva sobre ovos e larvas ocorreu em épocas de maior intensidade, enquanto que em estações de menor temperatura as falhas tenderam a aumentar. Por outro lado, a predação, em larvas e pupas, foi maior em épocas quentes. Contudo, ressaltamos que todos esses resultados foram dependentes do clima local e das variações observadas durante cada estágio de desenvolvimento do inseto. Ascia monuste orseis é uma praga em cultivos tropicais de brássicas, desse modo, no último capítulo, nós investigamos como o clima atual e futuros cenários podem afetar a distribuição potencial da espécie no mundo. Nossos modelos indicaram que áreas tropicais em outros continentes parecem ser adequadas para a ocorrência da espécie. No entanto, sob futuros cenários, essas áreas tenderam a diminuir, mas essa redução foi mais expressiva para um hospedeiro estudado (repolho) do que para o inseto. Desse modo, esta tese contribui para o conhecimento da história natural de A. monuste orseis e pode servir de guia para protocolos de biosegurança para o risco de introdução desta praga. In this thesis, we presented evidence on the role of climate in the natural history of the neotropical butterfly Ascia monuste orseis Godart (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). In the first chapter, we found that species occurrence increases during wet and warm conditions on agricultural crops since cold and dry conditions impair immature stages development (i.e., egg, larva, and pupa). In the second chapter, we investigated how variations on weather can affect the causes of natural mortality on immature stages. Our results indicated that variations on weather affect the mortality caused by failure, predations, and rainfall. Failure rates increased during cold and dry conditions, while under intense precipitation, rainfall caused mortality on eggs and larvae. Conversely, predation was higher during wet-warm seasons. However, we emphasized that these results were dependent on whether varied during immature development. Since A. monuste orseis is a pest of tropical brassica crops, in the last chapter, we investigated how the current climate and future scenarios can affect its potential distribution. Our models indicated that tropical areas seem to be suitable for species occurrence. However, under future scenarios, these areas tended to reduce, mostly to a host (cabbage) than the species. This thesis contributed to the knowledge about the natural history of A. monuste orseis and can be a guide to biosecurity protocols regarding the risk of pest introduction. Keywords: Biosecurity. Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq Termites display a key role in the terrestrial ecological ecosystems by positively contributing to maintenance of these ecosystems. However, despite this importance, some species are known as urban, forests, and agriculture pests. At urban areas, Cryptotermes brevis (Kalotermitidae) and Nasutitermes corniger (Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae) species are because of its attack to structure and wood pieces, causing a high damage to those materials. The use of conventional insecticide is the main control method for these pests. However, the adverse effects in the use of these products, and the demand for others with lower toxicological risks have been motivating the realization of research with natural products. Thus, in this study, we evaluate the lethal, and sub lethal effects of Aristolochia trilobata (Aristolochiaceae) and Lippia sidoides (Verbenaceae) essential oils, and their major compounds under N. corniger and C. brevis, respectively. The essential oils and its compounds were toxic to N. corniger and C. brevis. These treatments reduced the behaviour and walking of termites, as well showed repellent effect. From these results, we have strongly evidences that A. trilobata and L. sidoides, as well as their constituints could be used in control strategies, on a substitute and/or complimentary way, of N. corniger and C. brevis. Os cupins desempenham importantes papéis ecológicos nos ecossistemas terrestres contribuindo positivamente para a manutenção desses sistemas naturais. Porém, apesar desta importância, algumas espécies são consideradas pragas em ambientes urbanos e em cultivos agrícolas e florestais. Nas áreas urbanas, as espécies Cryptotermes brevis (Kalotermitidae) e Nasutitermes corniger (Termitidae) são destaque pelo seu ataque a estruturas e peças de madeira, danificando estes materiais. O uso de inseticidas convencionais é o principal método de controle destas pragas. Porém, os efeitos adversos da utilização destes produtos e a demanda por outros com menor risco toxicológico tem motivado a realização de pesquisas com produtos naturais. Assim, neste trabalho, avaliamos os efeitos letais e subletais dos óleos essenciais de Aristolochia trilobata (Aristolochiaceae) e Lippia sidoides (Verbenaceae), e seus constituintes majoritários sobre N. corniger e C. brevis, respectivamente. Os óleos essenciais e seus constituintes foram tóxicos a N. corniger e C. brevis. Estes tratamentos alteraram os comportamentos e o caminhamento dos cupins, além de apresentar efeito repelente. A partir destes resultados temos fortes evidências que os óleos essenciais de A. trilobata e L. sidoides, e seus constituintes majoritários poderão ser utilizados em estratégias de controle de forma substitutiva e/ou complementar de N. corniger e C. brevis.
