Resumo: Com base em uma pesquisa perto de Santarém (Pará), o artigo busca questionar a impressão de impermeabilidade entre “santos” e “encantados”, como foi enfatizada pela antropologia amazônica. Analisando as conexões entre as duas categorias, e a sua divisão em subcategorias, sugere-se que sua alternância tece uma narrativa sobre a emancipação dos seres humanos vis-à-vis das forças previamente presentes: depois de ter negociado com os encantados o direito de morar num local, os homens convidam os santos em suas próprias residências, como se a aliança com esses novos protetores permitisse afrouxar o domínio dos antigos mestres do espaço. Nessa história situada, os encantados mapeiam o espaço geográfico vivenciado enquanto santos simbolizam o tecido de relações sociais forjados nele entre os seres humanos.

Este artigo propõe analisar a trajetória dos padres operários da congregação Filhos da Caridade, sacerdotes de maioria francesa que atuaram na diocese de Santos/SP durante o período da ditadura militar. Responsáveis pela rearticulação da Juventude Operária Católica (JOC) na região da Baixada Santista, lidaram com intensa vigilância, sendo três deles presos na data da promulgação do AI-5. Utilizamos como principal referência a análise de parte do conteúdo disponibilizado pelo acervo da Delegacia de Ordem Política e Social de Santos (DOPS Santos), sob a guarda do Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo (APESP).

En el artículo se analiza la obra de Nelson Garrido a la luz de la teoría bajtiniana de la carnavalización. El punto de partida es la transgresión iconográfica en la textualización de lo sagrado, particularmente en cuatro puestas en escena de una serie fotográfica dedicada a santos católicos y populares. Estas imágenes proporcionan una visión panóptica de las tensiones y resemantizaciones propias del carnaval y ofrecen un contradiscurso que rehabilita el cuerpo y lo grotesco en la experiencia de lo sagrado.

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo destacar la importancia del estudio de los santos, una tradición muy presente en la cultura devocional latinoamericana. A pesar de que diferentes autores latinoamericanos han destacado su relevancia vinculada al encantamiento de la vida social; debido a la influencia de la sociología proveniente de Europa se privilegió el estudio del desencanto y la secularización, y la devoción a los santos fue poco atendida como fundamento teórico. Desde distintos ángulos de estudio de los santos se pretende valorar su estudio como soporte histórico de ethos barroco como soporte material de la imposición colonial, la resistencia cultural y la creatividad religiosa hasta el presente. Los apartados destacan lo que la gente hace, siente y vive en una comunicación intima con los santos, y la manera en que estas figuras son actantes con múltiples agencias como son su materialidad sensible, su plasticidad estética, su capacidad territorial, su autonomía respecto a lo institucional, sus competencias transgresivas, descolonizadoras y fractales. En suma, se busca reconocer a través de los santos en qué consiste esa “otra lógica” de la religiosidad latinoamericana (descrita por Cristian Parker) que es distinta a la lógica de la secularización occidental propia de los países Noratlántico y que en el presente goza de vigencia para encantar el mundo social.

Presentamos este artículo que es una transcripción de una conferencia que el doctor Luis Tau brindó el 15 de julio de 1978 en la Junta Catequística de la Arquidiócesis de La Plata, como parte de un ciclo de Conferencias sobre los Santos Padres de la Iglesia. La Fundación Santa Ana se ocupó de recopilar estas conferencias y publicarlas en escrito en una colección. Tau fue profesor de Historia de la Filosofía Medieval en el Seminario San José. Es uno de los muchos laicos que pasaron por nuestra casa y dejaron huella en los seminaristas con su sabiduría y su mirada de la realidad.

Ending civil conflict is difficult, particularly through political settlements. Conflicts now often occur in states with elections, and voters have sometimes been directly involved in the process, potentially in efforts to overcome elite divisions. Yet, according to evidence from the 2016 popular plebiscite in Colombia, referendums and other tools of direct approval by voters seem to amplify elite divisions and therefore are not a useful mechanism to strengthen peace processes in this way. Focusing instead on traditional elite-led negotiations that seek to satisfy each faction may have a better chance of producing signed settlements, although the Colombian case also suggests some alternative forms of inclusivity that may help increase the overall legitimacy of the process and improve the odds of implementation.

El reino de Navarra conquistado e incorporado a Castilla (1512-1515) no invocaba a un patrón celestial común, y sus ciudades y pueblos vivían cómodas con sus santos particulares. Elaborar una identidad comunitaria en este punto —lo mismo que acerca del primer poblador, o sobre el primer rey— que, además, distinguiera al reino de los navarros entre los miembros primogénitos de la Monarquía de España, necesitó un largo proceso de decantación y polémicas. Se sucedieron y combinaron alternativas diversas: un mártir bien documentado de la primitiva Galia (Saturnino), su misterioso primer discípulo pamplonés (Fermín), y un navarro canonizado en 1622 (Francisco de Javier). Al final, en 1657, se llegó a un consenso forjado entre la ciudad capital y las instituciones del reino, que ha resultado más identitario, y duradero, que Túbal como patriarca o que García Jiménez como primer rey.

This paper is a reflection on a set of ten images and a Via Sacra conceived by the sculptor Altino Maia (1911-1988), between 1955 and 1957, for the new parish church of São Pedro da Afurada (Vila Nova de Gaia). The study addresses the images in several dimensions: artistic and iconographic, including ordering processes and creation; the anthropological, detailing the community's reception and reaction to these sculptures. Nine of the images were «hidden» in cabinets for long years, removed from the eyes of the faithful, received the popular and derogatory names of «Santos Pretos» or «Santos das Rodilhas» and were even victims of aggression attempts. The sculpture of the Crucified Christ was exhibited on the apse's back wall until 2021 and the Via Sacra continues to be displayed on the north wall of the parish church of São Pedro da Afurada. Based on the documentary and visual sources of the time and the testimony of some inhabitants of Afurada, this paper intends to analyze the circumstances of commissioning and artistic creation, developing an iconographic study of the images, contextualizing them in their time and to understand these object-images (in line with Jérôme Baschet) from an anthropological perspective. First Plantagenêt kings' veneration of saints and their relics constitutes a part of their politics to construct the «empire» and to strengthen their territorial power basis. First, interest for certain cults fits in with the search for dynastic legitimisation by celestial patronage, while Thomas Becket has become the kingdom's new saint patron. Some relic affairs reflect symbolic of power's translation (Edward the Confessor, Edmund, Martial and Valerie, the elevation of relics at Fécamp, the discovery of Arthur and Guinevere's tombs at Glastonbury). Kings' presence at significant translation ceremonials or their visits to shrines are linked to their territorial politics (St. Michel's Mount, Rocamadour, Grandmont, and the translation of St. Frithswyth at Oxford). At last, relics played an essential role in Richard the Lionheart's crusade expedition. The link between politics and relics cult can be explained by the belief in the virtus materially present in relics; in which their possession and exalting by the cult had to grant celestial protection of the kingdom. The present article aims to highlight the importance of the study of saints, a tradition very present in Latin American devotional culture. Although different Latin American authors have highlighted its relevance linked to the enchantment of social life; due to the influence of sociology coming from Europe, the study of disenchantment and secularization was privileged, and devotion to saints was little attended as a theoretical foundation. From different angles of study of the saints, we intend to value their study as historical support of the baroque ethos as material support of colonial imposition, cultural resistance, and religious creativity up to the present. The sections highlight what people do, feel, and live in an intimate communication with the saints, and the way in which these figures are actors with multiple agencies such as their sensitive materiality, their aesthetic plasticity, their territorial capacity, their autonomy with respect to the institutional, their transgressive, decolonizing and fractal competences. In short, the aim is to recognize through the saints the "other logic" of Latin American religiosity (described by Cristian Parker), which is different from the logic of Western secularization typical of the North Atlantic countries, and which is currently in force to enchant the social world. We investigated and compared growth parameters, longevity, mortality (total, natural, and fishing), and exploitation rates of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus spp. in four important fishing regions of southeastern Brazil. The hypothesis that the growth and mortality characteristics of distinct populations differ along a latitudinal gradient was tested. Sampling was performed monthly in Macaé, Ubatuba, Santos/São Vicente, and Cananéia over a 1‐ to 2‐year period. Growth and longevity parameters were estimated by the von Bertalanffy growth equation models. Total mortality (Z) was estimated by length‐converted catch curves. Growth parameters differed between sexes: males reached smaller sizes, showed larger growth coefficients (k) and higher mortality, and lived less than females in the four studied regions. Rather than finding a latitudinal gradient, our results support the hypothesis that distinct local environmental characteristics and fishing pressures alter the growth and population dynamics of Xiphopenaeus spp. in different areas. Our study indicates that the stocks of Xiphopenaeus spp. are overexploited, highlighting the importance of management plans to prevent the collapse of stocks and maintain them at sustainable levels for long‐term exploitation. Agency activated through exchanges with saints is not simply present or absent. Rather it is emergent, depending on the mode of saints' material and social configurations, and the mood evoked by a specific saint's manifestation. In this essay I consider the history of an Afro-Brazilian saint called Slave Anastácia, as she signifies with varying social effects for different groups of ethno-racial users. I consider how saints become manifest in a given mode, and reduce a particular mood. Mood is inseparable from intangible entities' "presence." In this essay, I leverage such radical disjunctures between the forms of presence generated by the same saint - Anastácia as suffering martyr, as serene helpmeet, as erotic object - to reconsider how saints work at the intersection of mode and mood. By paying attention to saints and mood, I seek to worry over-familiar terms like will and agency. Thinking through mood points us toward material conjunctures and emotional resonances whose agency is diffuse but nevertheless generates predispositions to act in certain ways. The aim of the article is to given an explanatory overview of canon 1187, starting from the process by which it was drafted. This commentary involves the clarification of a number of key concepts, including the difference between canonization and beatification, private and public devotion, licit acts of devotion to Servants of God and licit public worship devotion to Blesseds and Saints. Este estudo tem como objetivo explorar algumas dinâmicas contextuais que operaram como relevantes fatores de atração de fluxos de imigrantes a Santos, no litoral de São Paulo, a partir da segunda metade do século 19, com ênfase nas suas últimas décadas. Dos contextos macroestruturais atrelados ao continente europeu e, principalmente, à economia política de São Paulo às evidências históricas em torno do protagonismo santista no eixo das transações comerciais agroexportadoras, direciona-se o foco, neste artigo, a um breve panorama oitocentista que, entre outras razões, justifica o processo de composição de Santos como um território de imigrantes.

A la luz de las recientes investigaciones sobre alteridad religiosa que están floreciendo en los últimos años, queremos realizar una nueva contribución sobre la otredad en el Reino de Toledo durante los siglos XVI y XVII. El presente artículo se ocupa de analizar la imagen del “otro” (musulmanes, moriscos, turcos, protestantes, etc.) en las festividades religiosas de Madrid, Alcalá de Henares y Toledo realizadas entre 1565 y 1622. A través de ellas pretendemos profundizar y aportar una visión renovaba en el análisis del arte efímero producido en las canonizaciones, beatificaciones y translaciones de reliquias, que nos permita comprender como evolucionó y se moldeó la visión del enemigo mediante los mensajes transmitidos por las clases gobernantes.
