- Abstract
Fe-Nx-C electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction are typically fabricated via pyrolysis. However, the pyrolysis process is poorly understood. Therefore, a systematic investigation was initiated to elucidate the effects of the pyrolysis conditions (atmosphere and temperature) on the evolution of active sites starting from iron phthalocyanine supported over carbon black. The atomic level dispersion of Fe-Nx is sustained up to 600 °C and afterward, the growth of iron oxide nanoparticles is observed. Interestingly, the different X-ray absorption spectroscopy fingerprints acquired during in-situ and ex-situ experiments indicated the bonding of oxygen as a fifth ligand on the Fe sites when exposed to the open air. The ORR activities were analyzed in acidic and alkaline media. The best electrocatalytic activity was observed for the electrocatalysts pyrolyzed at 600 °C. Above this temperature, a reduction in the activity was observed. Surface-to-reactivity analysis was carried out identifying the relationship between surface chemistry/morphology and electrocatalytic activity.

- Abstract
Trillion of cigarette butts are annually littered without being recycled. This work aims at valorizing the whole cigarette butts and their components (paper, filter and tobacco) into Fe-Nx-C electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acid and alkaline media. The pristine wastes were pyrolyzed at 450 degrees C, activated with KOH at 700 degrees C, blended with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) precursor, and heat-treated at 600 degrees C to produce a robust Fe-Nx-C material with ORR active units. The effect of the cigarette components on the final electrocatalytic activity was evaluated by thoroughly investigating the surface chemistry with XPS. The electrocatalysts displayed similar results among the different components in both media due to comparable surface chemistry, especially concerning the nitrogen functional groups. The highest performance was obtained in alkaline where the electrocatalysts from whole cigarettes and paper (CIGF_450 and CIGPF_450) showed an E1/2 of 0.89 V vs RHE, slightly larger than that of Pt/C with 40 wt % of Pt, which encouraged to replace Pt-based electrocatalysts in alkaline fuel cells.Within the core of circular economy, cigarette butts and their components (paper, filter and tobacco) were converted into Fe-Nx-C electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction, via pyrolysis, KOH activation and blending with FePc precursor. The final electrocatalysts were tested in acid and alkaline media with RRDE after characterizing them from the morphological and chemical point of view. image

- Abstract
Background: Mortality among people with HIV declined with the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy. We investigated trends over time in all-cause and cause-specific mortality in people with HIV from 1999-2020. Methods: Data were collected from the D:A:D cohort from 1999 through January 2015 and RESPOND from October 2017 through 2020. Age-standardized all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates, classified using Coding Causes of Death in HIV (CoDe), were calculated. Poisson regression models were used to assess mortality trends over time. Results: Among 55716 participants followed for a median of 6 years (IQR 3-11), 5263 participants died (crude mortality rate [MR] 13.7/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 13.4-14.1). Changing patterns of mortality were observed with AIDS as the most common cause of death between 1999- 2009 (n = 952, MR 4.2/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 4.0-4.5) and non-AIDS defining malignancy (NADM) from 2010 -2020 (n = 444, MR 2.8/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 2.5-3.1). In multivariable analysis, all-cause mortality declined over time (adjusted mortality rate ratio [aMRR] 0.97 per year; 95%CI 0.96, 0.98), mostly from 1999 through 2010 (aMRR 0.96 per year; 95%CI 0.95-0.97), and with no decline shown from 2011 through 2020 (aMRR 1·00 per year; 95%CI 0·96-1·05). Mortality due all known causes except NADM also declined over the entire follow-up period. Conclusion: Mortality among people with HIV in the D:A:D and/or RESPOND cohorts decreased between 1999 and 2009 and was stable over the period from 2010 through 2020. The decline in mortality rates was not fully explained by improvements in immunologic-virologic status or other risk factors.

- Abstract
Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (BIC/FTC/TAF) among people poorly represented in clinical trials and potentially at higher risk of suboptimal response to ART. Methods: Observational cohort study on persons with HIV (PWH) enrolled in ICONA who started BIC/FTC/TAF as initial therapy or as switching regimen while virologically suppressed. Primary endpoint was time to treatment failure (TF): new AIDS/death or virological failure (VF) or discontinuation for toxicity/failure. Secondary endpoints were time to treatment discontinuation for toxicity (TDT) and to VF. Groups of interest were those aged >50 years, female sex, and advanced HIV disease at first ART start. Probability of the events overall and according to groups and adjusted HR for every endpoint were calculated by Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression models. Results: Nine hundred and thirty-three ART-naive and 1655 ART-experienced PWH initiated BIC/FTC/TAF. Over a median follow-up of 69.8 weeks, 89 (9.6%) PWH at their first regimen experienced TF. PWH aged >50 years had 1.83-fold (95% CI: 1.19-2.83) higher risk of TF; PWH with advanced HIV disease had 2.21-fold (95% CI: 1.53-3.82) higher risk; there were no differences in TF according to sex.Over a median follow-up of 146.3 weeks, 109 (6.6%) out of 1655 switching PWH experienced TF; no differences were found in the risk of TF, TDT and VF according to groups of interest. Conclusions: Overall, BIC/FTC/TAF is well tolerated and virologically effective in the real-world scenario for ART-naive and -experienced PWH. Older ART-naive PWH and those with advanced HIV disease may respond less well as the burden of diseases might compromise treatment efficacy.

- Abstract
The integration of supercapacitive features in microbial fuel cells (MFC) can solve one of the major limitations of this technology, i.e., the low power output. In this chapter, three different strategies to exploit the supercapacitive features of MFCs are reported and discussed: (i) the integration of high specific surface area elements in the electrode to maximize the capacitive response, (ii) the exploitation of a pulsed discharge, and (iii) the decoration of microbial fuel cell electrodes with inorganic pseudocapacitive components.

- Abstract
In the last 20 years, direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) have been the subject of tremendous research efforts for the potential application as on-demand power sources. Two leading technologies respectively based on proton exchange membranes (PEMs) and anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have emerged: the first one operating in an acidic environment and conducting protons; the second one operating in alkaline electrolytes and conducting hydroxyl ions. In this review, we present an analysis of the state-of-the-art acidic and alkaline DAFCs fed with methanol and ethanol with the purpose to support a comparative analysis of acidic and alkaline systems, which is missing in the current literature. A special focus is placed on the effect of the reaction stoichiometry in acidic and alkaline systems. Particularly, we point out that, in alkaline systems, OH− participates stoichiometrically to reactions, and that alcohol oxidation products are anions. This aspect must be considered when designing the fuel and when making an energy evaluation from a whole system perspective. Graphical Abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

- Abstract
The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of primary importance for the direct and clean conversion of energy in fuel cells, necessarily requiring an electrocatalyst to be exploited. At the state of the art, platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts are the most promising alternative to carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles (Pt/C), which are more expensive and more performing but highly prone to deactivation in a contaminated working environment. The comparison of the two materials is at the level of fine-tuning, requiring specific activity descriptors, namely, turnover frequency (TOF) and site density (SD), to understand how to compare the performance of PGM-free electrocatalysts with Pt/C electrocatalysts. Specific probing molecules that bind with the active sites are required to evaluate the SD of PGM-free electrocatalysts. However, PGM-free electrocatalysts possess not a single active site like Pt/C, but a multitude of primary (metal-containing) and secondary (metal-free) sites arising from the pyrolysis synthesis process, eventually complicating SD evaluation. In this work, we propose a method for evaluating the direct interaction through the chemisorption of probing molecules over the PGM-free primary and secondary sites, the discrimination of which is of paramount importance in an effective SD evaluation. Based on the rotating disk electrode technique, the study investigates the electrochemistry of Fe-based PGM-free electrocatalysts poisoned with hydrogen sulfide at pH 1 in comparison with a Pt/C sample. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to establish a relationship between the electrochemistry and surface chemistry of the poisoned material. The results identify the exchange current density as a meaningful tool that allows the discrimination of poisoning of specific active sites (metal-containing or metal-free). In addition, the understanding of the interaction phenomenon occurring between sites and probing molecules will be para

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of being overweight and metabolic syndrome (MS) among people living with HIV (PHIV) in three different cross-sectional studies conducted over three different periods: 2005, 2011 and 2015. Methods: This was a multi-centre, nationwide study. Data were collected in three studies from the CISAI group - SIMOne, HIV-HY and STOPSHIV - and included a total of 3014 PHIV. Logistic regression [odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (CI)] was used to account for age and gender difference among three groups when comparing MS prevalence and being overweight; potential confounders were accounted for by including them in the regression equation. Results: Overall, the mean age was 46.9±10.2years, and men comprised 73.3% of participants. Comparing 2005, 2011 and 2015, MS was present in 34.5%, 33.0% and 29.3% of PHIV, respectively. Adjusted OR for MS was 0.64 (95% CI: 0.52-0.78) in 2011 and 0.56 (95% CI: 0.46-0.69) in 2015 compared with 2005, while BMI (kg/m2 ) increased from 23.6 in 2005, 24.5 in 2011 and 24.5 in 2015, with a concomitant increase of being overweight from 29.4% to 39.5% to 39.6% (p

BACKGROUND: Immediate initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) regardless of CD4 cell count reduces risk for AIDS and non-AIDS-related events in asymptomatic, HIV-positive persons and is the standard of care. However, most HIV-positive persons initiate ART when their CD4 count decreases below 500 × 10 9 cells/L. Consequences of delayed ART on risk for non-AIDS-defining and AIDS-defining cancer, one of the most common reasons for death in HIV, are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the long-term risk difference for cancer with the immediate ART strategy.DESIGN: Multinational prospective cohort study.SETTING: The D:A:D (Data collection on Adverse events of anti-HIV Drugs) study, which included HIV-positive persons from Europe, Australia, and the United States.PARTICIPANTS: 8318 HIV-positive persons with at least 1 measurement each of CD4 cell count and viral load while ART-naive (study period, 2006 to 2016).MEASUREMENTS: The parametric g-formula was used, with adjustment for baseline and time-dependent confounders (CD4 cell count and viral load), to assess the 10-year risk for non-AIDS-defining and AIDS-defining cancer of immediate versus deferred (at CD4 counts RESULTS: During 64 021 person-years of follow-up, 231 cases of non-AIDS-defining cancer and 272 of AIDS-defining cancer occurred among HIV-positive persons with a median age of 36 years (interquartile range, 29 to 43 years). With immediate ART, the 10-year risk for non-AIDS-defining cancer was 2.97% (95% CI, 2.37% to 3.50%) and that for AIDS-defining cancer was 2.50% (CI, 2.37% to 3.38%). Compared with immediate ART initiation, the 10-year absolute risk differences when deferring ART to CD4 counts less than 500 × 10 9 cells/L and less than 350 × 10 9 cells/L were 0.12 percentage point (CI, -0.01 to 0.26 percentage point) and 0.29 percentage point (CI, -0.03 to 0.73 percentage point), respectively, for non-AIDS-defining cancer and 0.32 percentage point (CI, 0.21 to 0.44 percentage point) and 1.00 percentage point (CI, 0.67 to 1.44 percentage points), respectively, for AIDS-defining cancer. LIMITATION: Potential residual confounding due to observational study design.CONCLUSION: In this young cohort, effects of immediate ART on 10-year risk for cancer were small, and further supportive data are needed for non-AIDS-defining cancer.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy Oversight Committee.

- Abstract
As highlighted by the recent roadmaps from the European Union and the United States, water electrolysis is the most valuable high-intensity technology for producing green hydrogen. Currently, two commercial low-temperature water electrolyzer technologies exist: alkaline water electrolyzer (A-WE) and proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEM-WE). However, both have major drawbacks. A-WE shows low productivity and efficiency, while PEM-WE uses a significant amount of critical raw materials. Lately, the use of anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEM-WE) has been proposed to overcome the limitations of the current commercial systems. AEM-WE could become the cornerstone to achieve an intense, safe, and resilient green hydrogen production to fulfill the hydrogen targets to achieve the 2050 decarbonization goals. Here, the status of AEM-WE development is discussed, with a focus on the most critical aspects for research and highlighting the potential routes for overcoming the remaining issues. The Review closes with the future perspective on the AEM-WE research indicating the targets to be achieved.

- Abstract
A novel route for the valorization of waste into valuable products was developed. Surgical masks commonly used for COVID 19 protection by stopping aerosol and droplets have been widely used, and their disposal is critical and often not properly pursued. This work intended to transform surgical masks into platinum group metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as well as into crude oil. Surgical masks were subjected to controlled-temperature and -atmosphere pyrolysis, and the produced char was then converted into electrocatalysts by functionalizing it with metal phthalocyanine of interest. The electrocatalytic performance characterization towards ORR and HER was carried out highlighting promising activity. At different temperatures, condensable oil fractions were acquired and thoroughly analyzed. Transformation of waste surgical masks into electrocatalysts and crude oil can open new routes for the conversion of waste into valuable products within the core of the circular economy.

- Abstract
Making a consistency with the objectives of circular economy, herein, waste pistachios shells were utilized for the development of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts which are the key bottleneck in the technological evolution of electrolyzers and fuel cells, respectively. As an alternative to scarce and expensive platinum-group-metal (PGM) electrocatalysts, metal nitrogen carbons (MNCs) are emerging as a promising candidate for both aforementioned electrocatalysis where iron and nickel are the metal of choice for ORR and HER, respectively. Therefore, FeNCs and NiNCs were fabricated utilizing inedible pistachio shells as a low-cost biosource of carbon. The steps involved in the fabrication of electrocatalyst were correlated with electrochemical performance in alkaline media. Encouraging onset potential of ~ 0.88 V vs RHE with a possibility of a 2 + 2 reaction pathway was observed in pyrolyzed and ball-milled FeNC. However, HF etching for template removal slightly affected the kinetics and eventually resulted in a relatively higher yield of peroxide. In parallel, the pyrolyzed NiNC demonstrated a lower HER overpotential of ~ 0.4 V vs RHE at − 10 mA cm−2. Nevertheless, acid washing adversely affected the HER performance and consequently, very high overpotential was witnessed.

- Abstract
Advanced materials such as graphene and the family of two-dimensional crystals are very attractive because of the myriad of applications that could be developed based on their outstanding properties. However, as soon as material development reaches enough maturity for production to be scaled up and to enter the market within products, it is crucial to place the technology in the context of possible risks to economic well-being, social equity and environmental harm. This review aims at highlighting the current state of art on sustainable development of graphene-related materials and related environmental impact assessment studies using life cycle assessment (LCA). We show that sustainable development has focused mostly on the use of waste or low cost materials as precursors. However, the findings from relevant LCA studies reveals the limits of this approach, which does not take into account that waste recycling is often very energy intensive. We provide an overview on the life cycle environmental impact assessment, with a focus on global warming potential and energy demand, carried out on different graphene productions methods for specific applications, ranging from composites to electronics. Finally, an outlook is given focussing on the comparison of the different production routes and the results from the LCA.

- Abstract
Nitrite contamination of groundwater is a concerning consequence of anthropic activity. The electrochemical detection of nitrite in water is based on direct electrocatalytic oxidation of nitrite over modified electrodes. However, drawbacks associated to the high oxidation potential required, oxide layer formation, and O2 interference are present. Considering the recent availability and low cost of platinum-group-metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalyst, a new sensing strategy is presented based on this class of material commonly used for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. The working principle relies on the inhibition of ORR active sites of PGM-free caused by the interaction with nitrite. The parameters of interest for the ORR inhibition were determined through cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry using a rotating disk electrode to minimize oxygen diffusion limitations at the working electrode. The linearity range of the sensor was 1–100 µM, with a sensitivity of 3.4 mV µM−1, and a limit of detection (LOD) in the sub-µM range. Based on the optimization of the electrocatalyst thickness and its reusability, the cost of 1 USD for ∼2000 tests was calculated.

- Abstract
Few studies analyzed left atrial (LA) peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) determinants, particularly across heart failure (HF) stages. We aimed to analyze the pathophysiological and clinical PALS correlates in a large multicentric prospective study. This is a multicenter prospective observational study enrolling 745 patients with HF stages. Data included PALS and left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV-GLS). Exclusion criteria were: valvular prosthesis; atrial fibrillation; cardiac transplantation; poor acoustic window. Median global PALS was 17% [24–32]. 29% of patients were in HF-stage 0/A, 35% in stage-B, and 36% in stage-C. Together with age, the echocardiographic determinants of PALS were LA volume and LV-GLS (overall model R2 = 0.50, p < 0.0001). LV-GLS had the strongest association with PALS at multivariable analysis (beta: −3.60 ± 0.20, p < 0.0001). Among HF stages, LV-GLS remained the most important PALS predictor (p < 0.0001) whereas age was only associated with PALS in lower HF-stage 0/A or B (R = − 0.26 p < 0.0001, R = − 0.23 p = 0.0001). LA volume increased its association to PALS moving from stage 0/A (R = − 0.11; P = 0.1) to C (R = − 0.42; P < 0.0001). PALS was the single most potent echocardiographic parameter in predicting the HF stage (AUC for B vs. 0/A 0.81, and AUC vs. 0/A for C 0.76). PALS remained independently associated with HF stages after adjusting for ejection fraction, E/e′ ratio, and mitral regurgitation grade (p < 0.0001). Although influenced by LV-GLS and LA size across HF stages, PALS is incrementally and independently associated with clinical status. LA function may reflect a substantial part of the hemodynamic consequences of ventricular dysfunction.

- Abstract
The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an electrochemical process of the utmost importance in energy conversion and storage, corrosion and chemical technologies. The ORR plays a major role in biological processes (such as respiratory biochemical chain reactions) and is being incorporated into numerous bioelectrochemical devices and systems, such as microbial and enzymatic fuel cells, microbiosynthesis processes, water desalination and purification technologies and biosensing. Researchers from various backgrounds have come together to address the specifics of the ORR in close-to-neutral environments in light of their possible integration with bioprocesses. Understanding the ORR mechanism in this pH region is complex, as it involves biotic (living systems or components derived thereof) and abiotic (often inorganic materials or composite) catalysts. This review offers a summary of catalyst-class-dependent ORR mechanisms and pathways with the corresponding limitations relevant to their practical use in bioelectrocatalytic systems. We also analyse the technological challenges often caused by the use of oxygen depolarization as the main driving force in practical applications.

- Abstract
Platinum metal group (PGM-free) electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were synthesized by ball milling of activated biochar and Fe(II) phthalocyanine. The biochar used as a carbon support was produced from pyrolysis of waste tea leaves at 1500 °C in argon atmosphere. The pyrolyzed waste tea was then activated with CO2 or urea. FE-SEM, HR-TEM, XPS, and Raman analyses were performed to investigate the morphology and the physicochemical properties of the electrocatalysts. The ORR activity and methanol tolerance of the Fe-N-C electrocatalysts were tested in rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE), showing promising results in terms of mass activity, onset and half-wave potential in an alkaline environment. Two different short potential cycling protocols demonstrated the high stability of these Fe-N-C electrocatalysts, especially when compared with a 20 wt. % commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst.

- Abstract
Metal-nitrogen-carbons (M-N-Cs) as a reliable substitution for platinum-group-metals (PGMs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are emerging candidates to rationalize the technology of fuel cells. The development of M-N-Cs can further be economized by consuming waste biomass as an inexpensive carbon source for the electrocatalyst support. Herein, we report the simple fabrication and in-depth characterization of electrocatalysts using lignin-derived activated char. The activated char (LAC) was functionalized with metal phthalocyanine (FePc and MnPc) via atmosphere-controlled pyrolysis to produce monometallic M-N-Cs (L_Mn and L_Fe) and bimetallic M1-M2-N-Cs (L_FeMn) electrocatalysts. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed a defect-rich architecture. XPS confirmed the coexistence of various nitrogen-containing active moieties. L_Fe and L_FeMn demonstrated appreciable ORR in both acidic and alkaline conditions whereas L_FeMn helped in restricting the peroxide yield, particularly in alkaline media. L_Fe and L_FeMn demonstrated remarkable onset potential (Eonset) of ∼0.942 V (vs RHE) with an E1/2 of 0.874 V (vs RHE) in 0.1 M KOH. In acid, L_FeMn had an Eonset of 0.817 V (vs RHE) and an E1/2 of ∼0.76 V (vs RHE). Finally, the L_FeMn as a cathode electrocatalyst was integrated and tested in PEMFC and AEMFC. AEMFC demonstrated optimistic performance with a peak power density of 261 mW cm−2 at the current density of ∼577 mA cm−2.

- Abstract
Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are promising electrochemical systems capable of producing electricity from the electrochemical oxidation of methanol and the reduction of oxygen. In this work, the effectiveness of the addition of sulfuric acid as a supporting electrolyte for methanol fuel composition was assessed. The results showed that the peak of power curve in DMFCs with Pt/C cathode electrocatalysts increased progressively from 70 mW cm−2 (0 mM of H2SO4) to 115 mW cm−2 with a concentration of 100 mM of H2SO4. These results underlined the positive effect of the addition of a supporting electrolyte in the methanol aqueous solution on the electrochemical output that was enhanced. Platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts based on Fe-Nx-C type were also tested being insensitive to methanol crossover and oxidation at the cathode. DMFC with Fe–N–C cathode catalysts result in a performance of 21.5 mW cm−2. In these operating conditions, the addition of supporting electrolyte does not seem to bring excessive advantage. Short stability tests are presented and an overall assessment of the resistances within the system is also discussed.

- Abstract
Loss-of-function variants in CHAMP1 were recently described as cause of a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by intellectual disability (ID), autism, and distinctive facial characteristics. By exome sequencing (ES), we identified a truncating variant in CHAMP1, c.1858A > T (p.Lys620*), in a patient who exhibited a similar phenotype of severe ID and dysmorphisms. Whether haploinsufficiency or a dominant negative effect is the underlying pathomechanism in these cases is a question that still needs to be addressed. By array-CGH, we detected a 194 kb deletion in 13q34 encompassing CHAMP1, CDC16 and UPF3, in another patient who presented with borderline neurodevelopmental impairment and with no dysmorphisms. In a further patient suffering from early onset refractory seizures, we detected by ES a missense variant in CHAMP1, c.67 G > A (p.Gly23Ser). Genomic abnormalities were all de novo in our patients. We reviewed the clinical and the genetic data of patients reported in the literature with: loss-of-function variants in CHAMP1 (total 40); chromosome 13q34 deletions ranging from 1.1 to 4 Mb (total 7) and of the unique patient with a missense variant. We could infer that loss-of-function variants in CHAMP1 cause a homogeneous phenotype with severe ID, autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and highly distinctive facial characteristics through a dominant negative effect. CHAMP1 haploinsufficiency results in borderline ID with negligible consequences on the quality of life. Missense variants give rise to a severe epileptic encephalopathy through gain-of-function mechanism, most likely. We tentatively define for the first time distinct categories among the CHAMP1-related disorder on the basis of pathomechanisms.

Within the framework of the circular economy, the waste litchi's skins were upgraded and transformed into electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The waste litchi's skins were pyrolyzed, activated, and then used as carbon support for fabricating metal–nitrogen–carbons (M–N–Cs) which belong to a promising class of platinum group metal-free electrocatalysts. The activated char was functionalized with transition metal (Fe, Ni, and Co)- phthalocyanine (Pc) in monometallic and bimetallic fashion by subjecting it to a thermal treatment at 600 and 900°C. The samples functionalized at 900°C showed higher performance for HER due to the formation of metal nanoparticles, whereas the samples functionalized at 600°C showed higher performance for ORR. Particularly, sample Ni–Co 900 had an overpotential of −0.38 V for HER, while the sample Fe 600 was the most active electrocatalyst for ORR by demonstrating the onset potential of ∼0.9 V (a half-wave potential of ∼0.81 V) with the least production of unwanted peroxide anion.

- Abstract
Following the core theme of a circular economy, a novel strategy to upcycle cigarette butt waste into platinum group metal (PGM)-free metal nitrogen carbon (M-N-C) electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is presented. The experimental route was composed of (i) the transformation of the powdered cigarette butts into carbonaceous char via pyrolysis at 450 °C, 600 °C, 750 °C and 900 °C, (ii) the porosity activation with KOH and (iii) the functionalization of the activated chars with iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc). The electrochemical outcomes obtained by the rotating disk electrode (RRDE) technique revealed that the sample pyrolyzed at 450 °C (i.e., cig_450) outperformed the other counterparts with its highest onset (Eon) and half-wave potentials (E1/2) and demonstrated nearly tetra-electronic ORR in acidic, neutral and alkaline electrolytes, all resulting from the optimal surface chemistry and textural properties.

- Abstract
Getting inspiration from the ‘waste to resource’ strategic theme of circular economy, herein, we present the upcycling of the critical raw material i.e. Co-containing waste cathode from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) into platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Lithium cobalt oxide-based cathode was recovered from spent LIBs (Waste LCOd) and subsequently treated with choline chloride: citric acid 1:1 deep eutectic solvent (DES) to obtain the full degradation of the LCO-type structure and, post thermal treatments, cobalt oxide in a carbonaceous matrix (ChCl.Citric). HER and ORR activities of derived materials were investigated in alkaline media using the rotating disk electrode (RDE) and rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE), respectively. To elucidate the role of cobalt present in the derived electrocatalysts, inks were prepared by supporting the electrocatalysts with different proportions of Ketjenblack (10:90 and 50:50 ratios). Waste LCOd closely followed the electrochemical response of commercial LCO and demonstrated the least overpotential (277 mV at −10 mA cm−2) for HER with an electrode configuration of 50:50. Whereas, ChCl.Citric 50:50 outperformed the other counterparts for ORR and exhibited a remarkable onset potential of 0.85 V (vs RHE) with the least peroxide production.

Serious games ,Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ,ADHD - Abstract
Cognitive developmental disorders are common in children and can affect various abilities. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent childhood psychiatric condition. This work presents PlayToPickUp, a serious game that aims to stimulate children in relevant cognitive domains (attention and error monitoring). A multidisciplinary team of experts and caregivers from two different centres that support therapeutic activities with such children participated from the beginning to the design and the evaluation of the game. Depending on the characteristics and abilities of the player, therapists can customise the game to provide training that best fits the skills and the needs of the child while maintaining the player's motivation. After its development the game was used over two months "in the wild" by children recruited by the two centres. In one case the children played with it within the regular activities offered by the training centre. In the other one, the parents of the children were instructed by caregivers to have the children play the game at home. In the paper we describe the experience gathered from such two studies run in parallel, discussing the aspects that worked better and those that represented difficulties, and the lesson learnt for future studies.

One of the goals of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions is to be able to stimulate the cognitive resources of older adults. An innovative way to address such stimulation is the use of serious games delivered through humanoid robots, as they can provide an engaging way to perform exercises useful for training human memory, attention, processing, and planning activities. This paper presents an approach to supporting cognitive stimulation based on personal memories. The humanoid robot can exhibit different behaviours using various modalities, and propose the games in a way personalised to specific individuals' requirements, preferences, abilities, and motivations, which can vary among older adults, and even dynamically evolve over time for the same person depending on changing user needs and health conditions. Using personal memories associated with facts and events that occurred in older adults life in the serious games can increase their engagement, and thus potentially reduce the cognitive training drop-out.

Robot personality ,HRI ,MCI older adults - Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the impact of different personalities in humanoid robots for cognitive training scenarios with older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In particular, we have designed an application with two opposite personalities based on the Extraversion dimension of the Big Five Factors model. A user test with 16 Italian-speaking participants diagnosed with MCI aged 68+ was performed. The analysis of the data collected suggests that the robot's personality can have an effect on the engagement of such users and also found that participants can discriminate between the two personalities. Overall, the study highlights the importance of designing human-robot interactions considering personality-related aspects when considering MCI older adults.

We present an approach to novel digital cognitive training through serious games able to adapt to personally relevant material from the older adult's life. The games are based on memories associated with the older adult's biography, thus making interactions personalised, relevant, and more engaging. The serious games are accessed through humanoid robots, which can make the training exercise more engaging because of their human-like behaviour.
