Both remote sensing and numerical modeling studies heavily rely on field data for calibration and validation, but they are seldom used to validate each other. In this work we used the turbidity front detected from satellite imagery to evaluate the performance of a numerical hydro-sedimentological model of the Rio de la Plata. The Rio de la Plata is a micro-tidal estuary located between Argentina and Uruguay in South America. It is approximately 280 km long and its width increases from 20 km at the inner part to 220 km at its mouth. Due to its large extension, satellite images are one of the few tools able to provide a synoptic view of the estuary. The estuary receives an annual mean flow of 22.000 m³/s from the Parana and Uruguay rivers, and 160x106 tons/yr of sediment, which are mostly cohesive sediments coming from the upper Parana River basin. The following data was available for studying the response of the system to the main forcings: daily discharges of the main tributaries from 2001 to 2017 (the mean discharge for the 2014-2017 period was 24250 m³/s); wind data every six hours from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF); CTD salinity measurements at two sites along the northern coast of the Rio de la Plata (just in front of Montevideo and approximately 40 km to the W). We used images from the MODIS-Aqua satellite mission from 2014 to 2017. The images have a spatial resolution of approximately 1 km and a daily time step, and we used the red channel reflectance (wavelength of 645 nm) to detect the turbidity front location. The turbid river water in the inner and intermediate regions of the estuary has high reflectance, while the clear seawater in the outer zone and continental shelf has negligible reflectance. This allowed us to implement an image-based, autonomous algorithm, defining the turbidity front as a reflectance level that ‘best’ separates the two reflectance regions. We analyzed the distribution of the front location over the 2014-2017 period, and found that the front location along the Uruguayan coast is more often located to the E of Montevideo, approximately 60% of the time, being the maximum eastward distance 143 km. On the other hand, we observed that the front could recede up to 70 km to the W of Montevideo. The turbidity front location along the Uruguayan coast presented statistically significant linear correlation with the Parana and Uruguay river discharges, with larger discharges being associated with positions further to the E. Regarding the wind, we observed as a general trend that positions to the W are associated with relatively weaker winds from all directions, while positions to the E show a larger scatter and are more frequently associated with stronger winds. We also observed a general trend in the data indicating that the front location along the north coast was particularly affected by winds coming from the SW and ENE directions.

Convenio entre la Administración Nacional de Puertos (ANP) y la Facultad de Ingeniería-Instituto de Mecánica de los Fluídos e Ingeniería Ambiental (IMFIA) a través de la Fundación Julio Ricaldoni (FJR) En este convenio se abordó el estudio de la hidrodinámica e hidro-sedimentología en la Bahía de Montevideo y recinto portuario. Metodológicamente el estudio incluye tres componentes. Por un lado el desarrollo de un modelo hidrodinámico y sedimentológico tridimensional avanzado para la costa de Montevideo que incluye además el efecto del oleaje (TELEMAC). Por otro lado la aplicación del modelo básico bidimensional hidrodinámico RMA, disponible en el IMFIA, que resuelve el flujo en la Bahía de Montevideo y zona portuaria generado por las mareas (RMA2D) y que se utiliza para el cálculo de los tiempos de residencia del agua en la Bahía. La tercera componente refiere a las mediciones de corriente que se realizaron en la boca de la Bahía de Montevideo con un equipo acústico ADCP fondeado durante varios meses. La implementación de ambos modelos numéricos considera las principales características de la dinámica del Río de la Plata que muestra una variabilidad influenciada por la marea astronómica y los eventos de marea meteorológica u ondas de tormenta. Las primeras con régimen semidiurno con desigualdades diurnas, y las segundas y de frecuencia aproximadamente semanal y de varios días de duración.

The hydrodynamics and ne sediment dynamics modelling in estuarine environments is very important for coastal engineering design and environmental assessment. This work presents the implementation of a coupled wave-currentsediment transport model with high spatial resolution in a harbour area for a complex estuarine system. The study case is the Río de la Plata with special attention to the Montevideo Bay area. The numerical model used is the open source TELEMAC-MASCARET Modelling System. Both a two-dimensional depth-averaged (2D) approach and a three-dimensional (3D) approach were implemented. The sediment transport implementation is focused only on ne cohesive sediments. Several modi cations are made in the code in order to consider particular relevant conditions and processes in our study case. The model was calibrated and validated based on eld data of several variables (sea surface elevation, currents, waves, salinity, suspended sediment concentration, turbidity) at several stations over extendend periods of time. The most recent available eld data speci cally in the Montevideo Bay area is incorporated. The obtained results with all the modules show good agreement with the measured data, demonstrating to represent satisfactorily the main features of the Río de la Plata dynamics and speci cally of the Montevideo coastal area. The in uence of the consolidation process is explored using the 2D model. Good agreement is found between the model results and measured vertical density pro les in the Montevideo Bay access channel. The 3D numerical model is then used to make a characterization of the hydrodynamics and ne sediment dynamics in the Montevideo Bay. The main circulation patterns in the bay and their relationship with the local forcings were identi ed. The non-astronomical tide events showed to have a relevant role in the water and sediment exchange between the bay and the coastal area, generating important anomalies respect to the astronomical behaviour. It is presented an analysis of the sedimentation patterns in the bay, together with a sediment budget analysis. At the larger scale of the whole estuary the model results con rms the importance of the current induced stress for the representation of the permanent suspended sediment concentrations and the wave induced stress during the main re-suspension events. Inside the Montevideo Bay the wave forcing plays a relevant role specially on the west area which is more exposed to the wave forcing coming through its biggest mouth. However the advection of sediment coming from the near coastal area and the circulation conditions are determinant, and can for example change the bed evolution tendency for similar wave conditions. La modelación de la hidrodinámica y dinámica de sedimentos nos en ambientes estuarinos es muy importante para el diseño en ingeniería de costas y la evaluación de impactos ambientales. Este trabajo presenta la implementación de un modelo acoplado corriente - oleaje - transporte de sedimento en un estuario complejo y con alta resolución espacial en un área portuaria. El caso de estudio es el Río de la Plata, con especial atención a la Bahía de Montevideo. Se utilizó el modelo numérico de código abierto TELEMAC-MASCARET Modelling System. Se realizó tanto una implementación bi-dimensional (2D) como tri-dimensional (3D). El modelo de transporte de sedimento se enfoca únicamente en los sedimentos nos cohesivos. Se realizaron diversas modi caciones en el código del modelo a los efectos de considerar condiciones y procesos particulares del caso de estudio. El modelo fue calibrado en base a información de diversas variables (niveles, corrientes, oleaje, salinidad, concentración de sedimento en suspensión, turbiedad) en varias estaciones de medición durante extensos períodos de tiempo. Se incorporó además la información disponible más reciente en la Bahía de Montevideo. Los resultados obtenidos con todos los módulos reproducen satisfactoriamente los datos medidos, demostrando la capacidad del modelo para representar las principales características de la dinámica del Río de la Plata y especí camente de la Bahía de Montevideo. Se exploró la in uencia del proceso de consolidación utilizando el modelo 2D. El modelo es capaz de reproducir razonablemente bien per les verticales de concentración del barro en el canal de acceso a la bahía. El modelo 3D se utilizó para hacer una caracterización de la hidrodinámica y dinámica de sedimentos nos en la Bahía de Montevideo. Se identi caron los principales patrones de circulación y su vínculo con los forzantes. Los eventos de marea meteorológica mostraron tener un rol relevante en el intercambio de agua y sedimento entre la bahía y el área costera adyacente, generando importantes anomalías respecto al comportamiento astronómico. Se presenta luego un análisis de los patrones de sedimentación, junto con un balance de sedimentos. A escala global del estuario los resultados con rman la importancia de las tensiones inducidas por las corrientes en el valor basal de concentración de sedimento en suspensión, y de las tensiones de oleaje durante los eventos de resuspensión más importantes. Dentro de la bahía el oleaje juega un rol relevante especialmente en la zona oeste la cual está más expuesta al oleaje proveniente de la boca más grande de la bahía. Sin embargo, la advección de sedimento proveniente de la zona costera y las condiciones de circulación son determinantes y pueden por ejemplo cambiar la tendencia de la evolución del fondo para similares condiciones de oleaje.

El Río de la Plata posee una gran importancia para nuestro país tanto desde el punto de vista económico como desde el punto de vista de manejo ambiental del ecosistema. En este sentido, hace varios años en la Facultad de Ingeniería se viene trabajando en el desarrollo de herramientas que permiten la simulación y predicción del comportamiento del mismo. Uno de los modelos numéricos base que se utiliza actualmente es el MOHID, que permite resolver las ecuaciones de movimiento mediante discretizaciones de volumenes finitos y el uso de técnicas de dominios encajados para aumentar la precisión en la simulación de zonas específicas. Uno de los problemas de este tipo de herramientas son los elevados costos computacionales. Teniendo en cuenta lo expresado anteriormente este trabajo presenta un estudio de las principales características del modelo hidrodinámico MOHID. En particular se evalúa con especial atención el uso en el modelo de técnicas de paralelismo de memoria compartida capaces de explotar arquitecturas de hardware multi-core.

Las inundaciones por desbordes de ríos representan actualmente una de las amenazas naturales más frecuentes en todo el mundo. Es por esto que existe un creciente interés en la simulación de crecidas con modelos numéricos. La fuente fundamental de información para la aplicación de modelos es la información altimétrica, que puede ser obtenida de los Modelos Digitales de Elevación (MDE). En esta tesis se abordó el estudio de la crecida histórica del río Salado (Santa Fe) en el año 2003. Se utilizaron tres MDE del Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) y adicionalmente se generó un MDT a partir de perfiles transversales medidos. De los productos del IGN, el MDT-30m presentó mayor similitud con los perfiles medidos, con un Error Cuadrático Medio de 0.68m. El MDE-Ar y el MDE-5m presentaron un ECM de 1.85 y 1.90m respectivamente con sobrestimaciones de cotas del terreno natural de hasta 2.5m. Fueron implementados dos modelos bidimensionales 2DH, HEC-RAS y SisBaHiA. Para el MDT-30m, se calcularon cotas que estuvieron entre 0.03-0.22m por debajo de las observadas, mientras que con el MDE-Ar y el MDE-5m los niveles calculados fueron superiores a los observados en los rangos 0.71-0.99m y 0.46-1.18m respectivamente. Los resultados demostraron que, en zonas de llanura, resulta imprescindible complementar los datos de los MDE con información batimétrica del cauce e información de campo. Se determinó la importancia hidro-ambiental de la planicie, la cual llegó a transportar aproximadamente el 80% del caudal pico, con velocidades que en algunos sectores alcanzaron el 1.5m/s, superando las del cauce. River overflow floods currently represent one of the most frequent natural hazards in the world. This is why there is a growing interest in flood simulation with numerical models. The fundamental source of information for the application of models is the altimetric information, which can be obtained from the Digital Elevation Models (DEM). In this thesis the study of the historical flood of the Salado River (Santa Fe) in 2003 was approached. Three DEMs from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) were used and, additionally, a DEM was generated from measured cross-sectional profiles. Of the IGN products, the MDT-30m presented the greatest similarity with the measured profiles, with a Mean Square Error of 0.68m. The DEM-Ar and the DEM-5m presented an ECM of 1.85 and 1.90m respectively with overestimations of heights of the natural terrain of up to 2.5m. Two 2DH two-dimensional models were implemented, HEC-RAS and SisBaHiA. For the MDT-30m, heights were calculated that were between 0.03-0.22m below those observed, while with the DEM-Ar and the DEM-5m the calculated levels were higher than those observed in the ranges 0.71-0.99m and 0.46 -1.18m respectively. The results showed that, in plain areas, it is essential to complement the DEM data with bathymetric information from the channel and field information. The hydro-environmental importance of the plain was determined, which transported approximately 80% of the peak flow, with speeds that in some sectors reached 1.5m/s, exceeding those of the channel.

Noncoding genomics, i.e., microRNAs and long coding RNAs (lncRNA), is an emerging topic in gastrointestinal tumors. In particular, the coordinate deregulation of miRNA-335-5p across these tumors and its potential clinical applications is an example of this scenario. This chapter discusses the pathogenetic role of miRNA-335-5p in esophageal, gastric, colon, liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic tumors. This pathogenetic role is examined in the context of the competing endogenous network, the language through lncRNA that reduce the quantity of miRNA available to target mRNA. The translational application of miRNA-335-5p, through the aberrant methylation of the promoter region of MEST—its host gene—as a potential biomarker for noninvasive detection of gastric cancer, is also discussed.
