Background One of the main features of addictive behaviors is the inability to wait for an action, that is, the waiting impulsivity. It has been suggested that potential therapeutic tools for addiction, such as transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), might focus on this inability. Nonetheless, whereas there is consensus about the role of prefrontal cortex on impulsivity behavior, the effects of tDCS in waiting impulsivity and underlying electrophysiological (EEG) markers are still not clear. Objective The study aimed the neuromodulation of right inferior frontal gyrus during a task designed to elicit premature responses, while EEG markers important in reward anticipation (i.e., cue and target-P3 and underlying delta/theta activity) were studied. Methods Forty healthy subjects participated in two experimental sessions, where they received active and sham tDCS while performing a premature responding task and the EEG was recorded. At next, participants performed two control tasks to evaluate transfer effects for delay discounting and motor inhibition abilities. Results Active tDCS decreased amplitude in cue-P3, target-P3, and delta activity during target-P3. On the other hand, active tDCS increased the discounting of future rewards in small values in comparison with sham, while no tDCS effects were found in motor inhibition. Conclusion These findings suggest tDCS-induced modulation of the P3 component and underlying oscillatory activity during waiting impulsivity. Moreover, these changes were associated with differences in the discounting of future rewards. Thus, the current study suggests the usefulness of tDCS in modulating impulsive processes and the relationship between P3, the inherent delta activity, and reward processing.

The ability to inhibit incorrect behaviors is crucial for survival. In real contexts, cues that require stopping usually appear intermixed with indications to continue the ongoing action. However, in the classical Stop-signal task (SST), the unpredictable stimuli are always signals that require inhibition. To understand the neural mechanisms activated by low-probability nonstop cues, we recorded the electroencephalography from 23 young volunteers while they performed a modified SST where the unpredictable stimuli could be either Stop or confirmatory Go signals (CGo). To isolate the influence of motor output, the SST was performed during overt and covert execution. We found that, paradoxically, CGo stimuli activated motor inhibition processes, and evoked patterns of brain activity similar to those obtained after Stop signals (N2/P3 event-related potentials and midfrontal theta power increase), though in lesser magnitude. These patterns were also observed during the imagined performance. Finally, applying machine learning procedures, we found that the brain activity evoked after CGo versus Stop signals can be classified above chance during both, overt and imagined execution. Cognitive Reserve (CR) is considered a protective factor during the aging process. However, although CR is a multifactorial construct, it has been operationalized in a unitary way (years of formal education or IQ). In the present study, a validated measure to categorize CR holistically (Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire) was used to evaluate the resting-state functional connectivity in 77 cognitively unimpaired participants aged 50 years and over with high and low CR, and matched brain global atrophy levels. The connectivity of networks linked to attentional (Dorsal Attention Network -DAN-) and executive (Frontal-Parietal Control Network -FPCN-) processes were evaluated by the combination of Independent Component Analysis and seed-based approaches, since these networks have been proposed as candidates to underlie the protective effect of CR in the aging context. Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate, in adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the brain atrophy that may distinguish between three AT(N) biomarker-based profiles, and to determine its clinical value. Methods: Structural MRI (sMRI) was employed to evaluate the volume and cortical thickness differences in MCI patients with different AT(N) profiles, namely, A−T−(N)−: normal AD biomarkers; A+T−(N)−: AD pathologic change; and A+T+(N)+: prodromal AD. Sensitivity and specificity of these changes were also estimated. Results: An initial atrophy in medial temporal lobe (MTL) areas was found in the A+T−(N)− and A+T+(N)+ groups, spreading toward the parietal and frontal regions in A+T+(N)+ patients. These structural changes allowed distinguishing AT(N) profiles within the AD continuum; however, the profiles and their pattern of neurodegeneration were unsuccessful to determine the current clinical status. Being language a paradigm of structural and functional asymmetry in cognitive processing, the left Inferior Frontal Gyrus has been consistently related to speech production. In fact, it has been considered a key node in cortical networks responsible for different components of naming. However, isolating these components (e.g., lexical, syntactic, and phonological retrieval) in neuroimaging studies is difficult due to the use of different baselines and tasks. In the present study, functional activation and connectivity of the left inferior frontal gyrus was explored using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Participants performed a covert naming task (pressing a button based on a phonological characteristic). Two conditions were compared: drawings of objects and single letters (baseline condition). Differences in activation and functional connectivity were obtained for objects and letters in different areas of the left Inferior Frontal Gyrus. The pars triangularis was involved in the retrieval of lexical-phonological information, showing a pattern of connectivity with temporal areas in the search for the name of objects and with perisylvanian areas for letters. Selection of phonological information seems to involve the pars opercularis both to letters and objects but recruiting supramarginal and superior temporal areas to letters, probably related to orthographicphonological conversion. In the present study we used the event-related brain potentials (ERP) technique and eLORETA (exact low-resolution electromagnetic tomography) method in order to characterize and compare the performance and the spatiotemporal pattern of the brain electrical activity related to the immediate episodic retrieval of information (words) that is being learned relative to delayed episodic retrieval twenty-minutes later. For this purpose, 16 young participants carried out an old/new word recognition task with source memory (word colour). The task included an immediate memory phase (with three study-test blocks) followed (20 min later) by a delayed memory phase with one test block. The behavioural data showed progressive learning and consolidation of the information (old words) during the immediate memory phase. The ERP data to correctly identified old words for which the colour was subsequently recollected (H/H) compared to the correctly rejected new words (CR) showed: (1) a significant more positive-going potential in the 500–675 ms post-stimulus interval (parietal old/new effect, related to recollection), and (2) a more negative-going potential in the 950–1850 ms interval (LPN effect, related to retrieval and post-retrieval processes). The eLORETA data also revealed that the successful recognition of old words (and probably retrieval of their colour) was accompanied by activation of (1) left medial temporal (parahippocampal gyrus) and parietal regions involved in the recollection in both memory phases, and (2) prefrontal regions and the superior temporal gyrus (in the immediate and delayed memory phases respectively) involved in monitoring, evaluating and maintaining the retrieval products. These findings indicate that episodic memory retrieval depends on a network involving medial temporal lobe and frontal, parietal and temporal neocortical structures. The present fMRI study aimed to characterize the performance and the brain activity changes related to episodic memory retrieval in adults with single domain aMCI (sdaMCI), relative to cognitively unimpaired adults. Participants performed an old/new recognition memory task with words while BOLD signal was acquired. The sdaMCI group showed lower hits (correct recognition of old words), lower ability to discriminate old and new words, higher errors and longer reaction times for hits. This group also displayed brain hypoactivation in left precuneus and the left midcingulate cortex during the successful recognition of old words. These changes in brain activity suggest the presence of neural dysregulations in brain regions involved during successful episodic memory retrieval. Several studies reported that healthy elderly with subjective memory complaints (SMC) evolve to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) more frequently than elderly without subjective memory decline. In the present study, we investigated event-related potentials (ERPs) associated to executive control processes taking place during the performance of a Simon task with two irrelevant dimensions (stimulus position and direction pointed by an arrow) in healthy elderly divided in low and high SMC (LSMC, HSMC) groups. P300 was studied as a correlate of working memory. Medial frontal negativity (MFN) was studied as a correlate of conflict monitoring. Whereas the LSMC group showed interference from the stimulus position, participants with HSMC showed interference from both irrelevant dimensions. P300 latency was longer and P300 amplitude was lower when the stimulus position was incompatible with the required response but differences between both groups were not observed. MFN was not modulated in the LSMC group; however, the HSMC group showed larger MFN when the stimulus position and/or the direction pointed by the arrow were incompatible with the required response. Early neuroimaging and electrophysiological studies suggested that motor imagery recruited a different network than motor execution. However, several studies have provided evidence for the involvement of the same circuits in motor imagery tasks, in the absence of overt responses. The present study aimed to test whether imagined performance of a stop-signal task produces a similar pattern of motor-related EEG activity than that observed during real performance. To this end, mu and beta event-related desynchronization (ERD) and the Lateralized Readiness Potential (LRP) were analyzed. The study also aimed to clarify the functional significance of the Stop-N2 and Stop-P3 event-related potential (ERPs) components, which were also obtained during both real and imagined performance. The results showed a common pattern of brain electrical activity, and with a similar time course, during covert performance and overt execution of the stop-signal task: presence of LRP and Stop-P3 in the imagined condition and identical LRP onset, and similar mu and beta ERD temporal windows for both conditions. These findings suggest that a similar inhibitory network may be activated during both overt and covert execution of the task. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 84 adults (51 to 87 years old) with the aim of exploring the effects of aging (middle-aged and older groups) and cognitive status (healthy or with amnestic mild cognitive impairment, aMCI) on the neural functioning associated with stimulus and response processing in a Stroop color-word task. An interference (or Stroop) effect was observed in the Reaction Time (RT), and the RT and number of errors results were consistent with the age-related decline in performance. Cognitive status did not affect the behavioral performance of the task, but age and cognitive status affected several ERP parameters. Aging was associated with a) slowing of the neural processing of the stimuli (P150, N2, and P3b latencies were longer), b) greater activation of the motor cortex for response preparation (LRP-R amplitude was larger), and c) use of more neural resources for cognitive control of stimuli (N2 amplitude was larger to the congruent and incongruent stimuli than to the colored X-strings, in the older group). Independent of age, aMCI dedicated more neural resources to processing the irrelevant dimension of the stimulus (they showed a greater difference than the control participants between the P3b amplitude to the colored X-strings and to the congruent/incongruent stimuli) and showed a deficit in the selection and preparation of the motor response (with smaller LRP-S and LRP-R amplitudes). Furthermore, the middle-aged aMCI participants evaluated and classified both congruent and incongruent stimuli more slowly (they showed longer P3b latencies) relative to middle-aged controls.

A famous-face naming task was used to establish the electrophysiological characterization of the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) state, successful naming (K), and nonrecognition (DK). The differences in the direct event-related potentials (ERPs) and in the lateralized readiness potential between those categories were studied. The ERP correlates of recognition and access to semantic and lexical information were similar between K and TOT, but showed amplitude differences with respect to DK. A delayed onset of the response selection was obtained in TOT in comparison with K, suggesting an insufficient activation of phonological information from 360ms onwards. The continuous search for the name and the conflict monitoring in TOT led to differences in ERP amplitudes between TOT and the other categories from 750ms onwards as well as to a delayed onset of response preparation, indicating a continuous engagement of processing resources. © 2012 Society for Psychophysiological Research.

The present study analyses the modulatory effects of affective pictures in the early posterior negativity (EPN), the late positive potential (LPP) and the human startle response on both the peripheral (eye blink EMG) and central neurophysiological levels (Probe P3), during passive affective pictures viewing. The affective pictures categories were balanced in terms of valence (pleasant; unpleasant) and arousal (high; low). The data shows that EPN may be sensitive to specific stimulus characteristics (affective relevant pictures versus neutral pictures) associated with early stages of attentional processing. In later stages, the heightened attentional resource allocation aswell as themotivated significance of the affective stimuliwas found to elicit enhancedamplitudes of slow wave processes thought to be related to enhanced encoding, namely LPP,. Although pleasant low arousing pictureswere effective in engaging the resources involved in the slowwave processes, the highly arousing affective stimuli (pleasant and unpleasant) were found to produce the largest enhancement of the LPP, suggesting that high arousing stimulimay are associatedwith increasedmotivational significance. Additionally the response to high arousing stimulimay be suggestive of increasedmotivational attention, given the heightened attentional allocation, as expressed in the P3 probe, especially for the pleasant pictures. Williams syndrome (WS), a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder due to a microdeletion in chromosome 7, is described as displaying an intriguing socio-cognitive phenotype. Deficits in prosody production and comprehension have been consistently reported in behavioral studies. It remains, however, to be clarified the neurobiological processes underlying prosody processing in WS. This study aimed at characterizing the electrophysiological response to neutral, happy, and angry prosody in WS, and examining if this response was dependent on the semantic content of the utterance. A group of 12 participants (5 female and 7male), diagnosed with WS, with age range between 9 and 31 years, was compared with a group of typically developing participants, individually matched for chronological age, gender and laterality. After inspection of EEG artifacts, data from 9 participants with WS and 10 controls were included in ERP analyses. Participants were presented with neutral, positive and negative sentences, in two conditions: (1) with intelligible semantic and syntactic information; (2) with unintelligible semantic and syntactic information (‘pure prosody’ condition). They were asked to decide which emotion was underlying the auditory sentence. Atypical event-related potentials (ERP) components were related with prosodic processing (N100, P200, N300) in WS. In particular, reduced N100 was observed for prosody sentences with semantic content; more positive P200 for sentences with semantic content, in particular for happy and angry intonations; and reduced N300 for both types of sentence conditions. These findings suggest abnormalities in early auditory processing, indicating a bottomup contribution to the impairment in emotional prosody processing and comprehension. Also, at least for N100 and P200, they suggest the top-down contributions of semantic processes in the sensory processing of speech. This study showed, for the first time, that abnormalities in ERP measures of early auditory processing in WS are also present during the processing of emotional vocal information. Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder due to microdeletion in chromosome 7, has been described as a syndrome with an intriguing socio-cognitive phenotype. Cognitively, the relative preservation of language and face processing abilities coexists with severe deficits in visual-spatial tasks, as well as in tasks involving abstract reasoning. However, in spite of early claims of the independence of language from general cognition in WS, a detailed investigation of language subcomponents has demonstrated several abnormalities in lexical-semantic processing. Nonetheless, the neurobiological processes underlying language processing in Williams syndrome remain to be clarified. The aim of this study was to examine the electrophysiological correlates of semantic processing in WS, taking typical development as a reference. A group of 12 individuals diagnosed with Williams syndrome, with age range between 9 and 31 years, was compared with a group of typically developing participants, individually matched in chronological age, gender and handedness. Participants were presented with sentences that ended with words incongruent (50%) with the previous sentence context or with words judged to be its best completion (50%), and they were asked to decide if the sentence made sense or not. Results in WS suggest atypical sensory ERP components (N100 and P200), preserved N400 amplitude, and abnormal P600 in WS, with the latter being related to late integration and re-analysis processes. The motor hierarchy hypothesis and the related debate about the role of the primary motor cortex (MI) in motor preparation are major topics in cognitive neuroscience today. The present study combines the two strategies that have been followed to clarify the role of MI in motor preparation independently from execution: motor imagery and the use of precueing tasks. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while subjects either performed or just imagined sequential finger movements in response to a central target (numbers 1, 2 or 3) which was precued by arrows (at both sides of the screen) that provided information about response side. Both motor imagery and execution elicited Lateralized Readiness Potentials (LRPs) with similar morphology and latency. Given that the LRP is generated in MI, the results show that the primary motor cortex is also active during imagery and give support for the hypothesis of a functional equivalence between motor imagery and execution. Nevertheless, the analysis of the different moments of motor preparation (precue vs. target-induced activity) revealed important differences between both conditions: whereas there were no differences in LRPs nor in brain areas estimated by standardized low resolution tomographies (sLORETA) related to precue presentation, larger LRP amplitudes and higher activation of MI were found during motor execution than imagery in the target-related activity. These results have important implications for the development of brain-computer devices and for the use of motor imagery in neurorehabilitation.

Although there is substantial evidence that motor execution (M-Ex) and motor imagery (M-Im) share a common neural substrate, the role of the primary motor cortex (M1) during imagery is still a matter of debate. The present ERP study tries to clarify the functional similarity between the two processes in respect of (i) the engagement of the corresponding somatotopic M1 areas during execution and imagery of hand vs. foot movements; and (ii) the effect of conflicting information on response preparation. To this end, we recorded ERPs from 28 electrode sites in 19 participants while they performed a conflict task with congruent (target and flanker arrowheads pointing in the same direction) and incongruent (target pointing in the opposite direction to the flanker arrowheads) trials. We obtained the lateralized readiness potential (LRP), a component generated in M1, while subjects physically executed or mentally simulated the task. As expected by the somatotopic organization of M1, the LRP was of opposite polarity when foot, rather than hand, movements were prepared. The inversion of polarity also occurred during M-Im, a result that strongly argues in favour of the participation of M1 in motor imagery. In incongruent trials, longer LRP latencies, a premature preparation of the incorrect response (positive deflection in LRP waveform) and a fronto-central N2 component associated with response conflict appeared during both M-Ex and M-Im. Altogether, the results support the functional equivalence of the two processes and give support to the clinical use of M-Im for the improvement and recovery of motor functions.

Introduction Naming is the result of complex cognitive processes, as it involves remembering the verbal label associated with an object, action, place, animal, or person. Naming requires retrieval of a label and its spoken or written production. However, although we know the names of many people, animals, or things, in the course of daily life, the naming of known names can fail momentarily. A universal experience is the annoying feeling of wanting to say a word and not being able to, while being completely sure that we know it, that we have recalled it in the past, and that we are on the verge of retrieving it. This experience is, of course, the “tip-of-the-tongue state” (TOT). One of the main features of the phenomenon lies in the temporary inability to access information that is undoubtedly registered in the memory stores of the person who presents a TOT. Understanding how this phenomenon occurs, therefore, may be helpful to understand how the mechanisms of accessing information stored in memory take place. We also think that TOTs can aid our understanding of memory retrieval disorders.

We examined the event-related brain potentials elicited by color-word stimuli in a Stroop task in which healthy participants (young and old) had to judge whether the meaning and the color of the stimulus were congruent or incongruent. The Stroop effect occurred in both age groups, with longer reaction times in the older group than in the young group for both types of stimuli, but no difference in the number of errors made by either group. Although the N2 and P3b latencies were longer in the older than in the younger group, there were no differences between groups in the latencies of earlier event-related potential components, and therefore the age-related processing slowing is not generalized. The frontal P150 amplitude was larger, and the parietal P3b amplitude was smaller, in the older than in the younger group. Furthermore, the P3b amplitude was maximal at frontal locations in older participants and at parietal locations in young participants. Film clips are an important tool for evoking emotional responses in the laboratory. When compared with other emotionally potent visual stimuli (e.g., pictures), film clips seem to be more effective in eliciting emotions for longer periods of time at both the subjective and physiological levels. The main objective of the present study was to develop a new database of affective film clips without auditory content, based on a dimensional approach to emotional stimuli (valence, arousal and dominance). The study had three different phases: (1) the pre-selection and editing of 52 film clips (2) the self-report rating of these film clips by a sample of 113 participants and (3) psychophysiological assessment [skin conductance level (SCL) and the heart rate (HR)] on 32 volunteers. Film clips from different categories were selected to elicit emotional states from different quadrants of affective space. The results also showed that sustained exposure to the affective film clips resulted in a pattern of a SCL increase and HR deceleration in high arousal conditions (i.e., horror and erotic conditions). A famous-face naming task was used to establish the electrophysiological characterization of the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) state, successful naming (K), and nonrecognition (DK). The differences in the direct event-related potentials (ERPs) and in the lateralized readiness potential between those categories were studied. The ERP correlates of recognition and access to semantic and lexical information were similar between K and TOT, but showed amplitude differences with respect to DK. A delayed onset of the response selection was obtained in TOT in comparison with K, suggesting an insufficient activation of phonological information from 360 ms onwards. The continuous search for the name and the conflict monitoring in TOT led to differences in ERP amplitudes between TOT and the other categories from 750 ms onwards as well as to a delayed onset of response preparation, indicating a continuous engagement of processing resources.

Active brain areas and their temporal sequence of activation during the successful retrieval and naming of famous faces (KNOW) and during the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) state were studied by means of low resolution electromagnetic tomographic analysis (LORETA) applied to event-related potentials. The results provide evidence that adequate activation of a neural network during the first 500 ms following presentation of the photograph--mainly involving the posterior temporal region, the insula, lateral and medial prefrontal areas and the medial temporal lobe--is associated with successful retrieval of lexical-phonological information about the person's name. Significant differences between conditions were observed in the 538-698-ms interval; specifically there was greater activation of the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACC) towards the supplementary motor area (SMA) in the KNOW than in the TOT condition, possibly in relation to the motor response and as a consequence of the successful retrieval of lexical-phonological information about the person.

Studies that have attempted to determine the effects of aging on the brain neural sources of memory retrieval have reported two contrasting age effects: under-recruitment and over-recruitment of several prefrontal areas. However, the causes for these effects are still a matter of debate. In order to study the underlying factors that cause the effects, we compared brain activation in young and older adults, in a successful word retrieval condition, and a failed word retrieval condition: the tip-of-the-tongue state. For this, we used the event-related potentials technique and neural source estimation with low-resolution tomographies. The results showed that the older adults did not display under-recruitment in any brain area in comparison with the young adults. However, they displayed additional prefrontal activation that varied depending on the processing stage and the condition, which supports the hypothesis of selective over-recruitment in older adults.

This study examined the effects of aging on the ERP components associated with the different processing stages in a face naming task. Two hundred photographs were presented to 13 young and 10 elderly adults, who had to press a button and then to say the name aloud (KNOW condition), or “Can’t remember” if they were experiencing a tip-of-the-tongue state (TOT condition). Young adults showed larger ERP amplitudes in KNOW than in TOT in the 550–750 and 1550–2000 ms intervals, but the older adults did not show any such differences. The older adults showed a specific lengthening in ERP latencies from 250 ms onwards, and smaller mean amplitudes in the 550–750 ms interval in the KNOW category and in the 750–1000 ms interval in both categories, and a wider and more frontalized scalp topographical distribution of the ERP amplitudes than the young adults. The results may indicate activation of compensatory mechanisms in elderly adults.

With the aim of identifying event-related potential (ERP) correlates of the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) state, we employed a task involving identification and naming of the faces of famous people with three response categories: KNOW (correct naming), DON'T KNOW (name not known), and TOT. Before 450 ms, no differences are observed between TOT and KNOW conditions in ERPs related to face processing and recognition. The smaller mean amplitude in TOT than in KNOW responses over the 550-750-ms interval and the N-TOT difference wave are correlates of the onset of the TOT state, probably reflecting a division of processing resources and low activation of the lexical-phonological route. The smaller amplitude of a late negative wave (between 1350 and 1550 ms) in TOT than in DON'T KNOW responses, and the P-TOT difference wave, seem to indicate that an important amount of processing resources is engaged in resolving the TOT. There has been controversy concerning the activity of the primary motor cortex (MI) during the mental rehearsal of movement (motor imagination). In this study we found that the lateralized readiness potential (LRP), an event-related potential probably generated in MI, appeared with similar latencies during both trials requiring execution of hand movements and trials requiring only their mental rehearsal, regardless of whether misleading pre-cues that increased latency were employed. However, LRPs obtained during imagination trials had smaller amplitudes. We conclude that MI is involved in motor imagination as well as in preparing overt movement, and that in overt movement the LRP sums neural activity common to these two situations and neural activity exclusive to overt movement.

Some authors have speculated that the cognitive component (P3) of the Event-Related Potential (ERP) can function as a psychophysiological measure of sexual interest. The aim of this study was to determine if the P3 ERP component in a workload task can be used as a specific and objective measure of sexual motivation by comparing the neurophysiologic response to stimuli of motivational relevance with different levels of valence and arousal. A total of 30 healthy volunteers watched different films clips with erotic, horror, social-positive and social-negative content, while answering an auditory oddball paradigm. Erotic film clips resulted in larger interference when compared to both the social-positive and auditory alone conditions. Horror film clips resulted in the highest levels of interference with smaller P3 amplitudes than erotic and also than social-positive, social-negative and auditory alone condition. No gender differences were found. Both horror and erotic film clips significantly decreased heart rate (HR) when compared to both social-positive and social-negative films. The erotic film clips significantly increased the skin conductance level (SCL) compared to the social-negative films. The horror film clips significantly increased the SCL compared to both social-positive and social-negative films. Both the highly arousing erotic and non-erotic (horror) movies produced the largest decrease in the P3 amplitude, a decrease in the HR and an increase in the SCL. These data support the notion that this workload task is very sensitive to the attentional resources allocated to the film clip, although they do not act as a specific index of sexual interest.
