Objectives Few studies have analyzed factors associated with delirium subtypes. In this study, we investigate factors associated with subtypes of delirium only in patients with dementia to provide insights on the possible prevention and treatments. Design This is a cross-sectional study nested in the "Delirium Day" study, a nationwide Italian point-prevalence study. Setting and participants Older patients admitted to 205 acute and 92 rehabilitation hospital wards. Measures Delirium was evaluated with the 4-AT and the motor subtypes with the Delirium Motor Subtype Scale. Dementia was defined by the presence of a documented diagnosis in the medical records and/or prescription of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or memantine prior to admission. Results Of the 1057 patients with dementia, 35% had delirium, with 25.6% hyperactive, 33.1% hypoactive, 34.5% mixed, and 6.7% nonmotor subtype. There were higher odds of having venous catheters in the hypoactive (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.18-2.81) and mixed type of delirium (OR 2.23, CI 1.43-3.46), whereas higher odds of urinary catheters in the hypoactive (OR 2.91, CI 1.92-4.39), hyperactive (OR 1.99, CI 1.23-3.21), and mixed types of delirium (OR 2.05, CI 1.36-3.07). We found higher odds of antipsychotics both in the hyperactive (OR 2.87, CI 1.81-4.54) and mixed subtype (OR 1.84, CI 1.24-2.75), whereas higher odds of antibiotics was present only in the mixed subtype (OR 1.91, CI 1.26-2.87). Conclusions and implications In patients with dementia, the mixed delirium subtype is the most prevalent followed by the hypoactive, hyperactive, and nonmotor subtype. Motor subtypes of delirium may be triggered by clinical factors, including the use of venous and urinary catheters, and the use of antipsychotics. Future studies are necessary to provide further insights on the possible pathophysiology of delirium in patients with dementia and to address the optimization of the management of potential risk factors.

- Abstract
The number of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is rapidly increasing in the adult population, mainly due to the improved long-term survival. Serial follow-up with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is very appealing due to its non-invasive nature. CMR exam is able to provide specific information about cardiac function, hemodynamics, anatomy and tissue characterization unlikely achievable by other diagnostic techniques. CMR in CHD plays a role both in early diagnosis and in post-operative follow-up. Black Blood T1 weighted sequences are used to acquire morphological information. Cine Steady State Free Precession sequences are mainly used to provide data about cardiac function and kinesis. Hemodynamic assessment is routinely performed using phase contrast sequences, which provide reliable information concerning vessel flow pattern, cardiac output and intracardiac shunts. Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) and 3D coronary MRA of the whole thorax can provide detailed morphological information regarding great vessels and proximal coronary arteries. Presence of late gadolinium enhancement suggesting myocardial macroscopic fibrosis seems to play a prognostic and diagnostic role even in this field.

- Abstract
Background: Little is known about the clinical value of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), in children affected by dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Materials and methods: We retrospectively evaluated 15 patients (8 ± 6 years, 6 males) with diagnosis of DCM who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance since 2014. All scans were performed with a 1.5 T system (Aera, Siemens). Study protocol included cine steady-state free precession sequences, followed by administration of 0.2 mmol/kg of gadolinium-based contrast agent. Inversion recovery Turbo Flash sequences, in the same position of cine images, were acquired 10-15 min after the injection of contrast agent, in order to assess the presence of LGE. The latter was considered positive with a signal intensity > 6 SD from normal myocardial tissue. Indexed end-diastolic volume (EDVi) and end-systolic volume (ESVi), and left ventricle (LV) ejection fraction (EF) were calculated by using dedicated software on off-line workstation. Global longitudinal strain and diastolic function were evaluated by echocardiography. Clinical follow-up, including death, transplant, and listing for heart transplant [major adverse cardiac events (MACE)], were evaluated. Patients were divided into two different subgroups: negative (Group A) and positive (Group B) for presence of LGE. Statistical analysis was performed by using Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05 considered as statistically significant). results: Seven patients (47%) showed LGE. A global diffuse subendocardial pattern was evident in all patients presenting LGE (7/7, 100%). The following main LV indexes were observed in the two subgroups. Group A: EDVi = 96 ± 33 ml, ESVi = 56 ± 29 ml, LV EF = 45 ± 10%, global longitudinal strain = -16 ± 5%, E/e' ratio = 10 ± 3, MACE = 1. Group B: EDVi = 130 ± 60 ml, ESVi = 89 ± 43 ml, LV EF = 31 ± 6%, global longitudinal strain = -13 ± 4%, E/e' ratio = 9 ± 3, MACE = 3. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups, in terms of ED

Defoliation is a cultural practice for crop management in grapevines and the benefits effects have been demonstrated. Here, the influence of 'early' leaf removal on the quality of Nero d'Avola wines was evaluated. Particular attention has been given to the volatile constituents responsible for the wine aroma but also to the total amount of polyphenolic compounds, anthocyanins and flavonoids.'Early' defoliation was manually applied and compared with non-defoliated controls. The grapes were harvested at two different ripening times following their technological and phenolic maturity. Statistical quantitative differences occurred among the samples from the four trials (defoliated and control samples, both at two ripening times). Both the time of harvest and the vine leaf removal determined variation in the wine composition. A large number of volatile constituents were identified and quantified; the odour activity values (OAVs) were calculated. Basal leaf removal reduced pH and increased titratable acidity, total amount of anthocyanins, flavonoids, polyphenols and colour intensity in the wines from the first harvest. Results showed the increase of fermentation and varietal aromas in the defoliated wines from the first harvest. Limited differences occurred between the wines from defoliated and control vines relative to the second harvest. Principal components analysis, which was applied to compounds with OAVs ≥ 0.5, allowed the different compounds to be distinguished.'Early' leaf removal can lead to a positive effect on the quality of Nero d'Avola under the environmental conditions in which the present study was undertaken but particular attention has to be given to the time of grape harvest. The results also demonstrate that 'early' defoliation can be applied to improve wine quality in the Mediterranean region, where there is a concentration of rainfall during winter, and nearly arid conditions and high temperatures during the summer.

- Abstract
Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) is a well-established, thoroughly validated instructional model used to teach a variety of writing strategies to elementary, middle, and high school aged students. In this article, an overview of SRSD is presented. Specifically, this includes a discussion about why students struggle with various aspects of the writing process and an explanation of how strategy instruction is uniquely well suited for writing instruction. Next, the SRSD stages are described and an example of how SRSD was used to teach a story grammar strategy to fifth-grade students is offered. Finally, the principles for evaluation and characteristics of effective instruction are discussed and additional resources are listed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immunology ,Immunology and Allergy - Abstract
The role of Ig classes and subclasses in complement activation has been investigated both in vitro and in experimental animals, but not in humans. This study was conducted to determine the immunologic events of post-transfusion anaphylaxis in humans, and the effects of immune complexes of different IgG subclass compositions on complement activation. The ability of immune complexes containing mixed IgG1 and IgG4 or IgG4 Ab only to activate complement was investigated in two patients with von Willebrand's disease (a congenital bleeding disorder). This disease was complicated by precipitating IgG alloantibodies to von Willebrand factor (vWF), which triggered complement-mediated anaphylaxis after infusion of vWF-containing preparations. Complement activation was greater in the presence of mixed IgG1- and IgG4-vWF complexes than with IgG4-vWF alone. In one patient, the generation of large amounts of C4a, C3a, and terminal complement complexes following the formation of mixed IgG1- and IgG4-vWF was associated with life-threatening anaphylaxis. In this patient, IgG4 appeared to have no inhibitory effect on antigen-bound IgG1-mediated complement activation. In the other patient, formation of IgG4-vWF led to a lesser degree of complement activation and was associated with moderately severe anaphylaxis. Since neither patient showed any biochemical alterations indicating the involvement of mast cells or the contact phase of coagulation at any time, it is probable that the pathogenetic mechanism of the clinical syndrome was a direct effect of complement anaphylatoxins on vascular permeability and smooth muscle contraction. In both patients, IgG-vWF bound C4 and C3 (IgG4-vWF to a lesser extent than mixed IgG1- and IgG4-vWF), and this probably prevented serum sickness as a complication.

Vineyards have characteristic responses to sunlight. The reflectance values at the different wavelengths are typical of vegetation and define its spectral signature. The aim of this work was to determine the spectral signatures of table grape vineyards located in the production area of Robinvale (Victoria, Australia) in order to identify cultivars in the vineyard. Spectral signatures were detected from images in eight bands from the Worldview 3 platform. Spectral signatures for a representative number of plots were extracted using satellite reflectance images for each cultivar. Spectral signatures were also collected in the field, from the same cultivars, with a FieldSpec® HandHeld 2 portable spectroradiometer. Signatures were analyzed to determine the average spectral response for each plot and the variability in terms of coefficient of variation. Results showed that some cultivars exhibited different spectral signatures and trends while other cultivars had similar behavior. All the cultivars covered different regions of the Cartesian surface and were therefore distinguishable, except for ‘IFG 68-175’. Therefore, spectral signatures represent a powerful tool for a preliminary characterization of cultivars and vineyards. Spectral signatures were successfully used to classify vineyards down to the cultivar level and, within the same cultivar, to identify different management practices.

In this study the objective was to investigate if differences in berry size (within a population of berries from different bunches) and flowering process would lead to differences in qualitative parameters and berries variability. The trial was conducted during the 2009 vegetative season at an irrigated ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’/1103 P vineyard. At the beginning of flowering, for 100 inflorescences, all open flowers were marked by red ink while 5 days later, closed flowers were marked by black ink. Open and closed flower distribution was investigated along the rachis. At pea size, 20 marked bunches were sampled. The diameter and weight of all berries was measured and Gaussian distribution was performed. The smallest (≤7 mm) and the largest (≥9 mm) berries, representing the lateral of the Gaussian distribution of the berry population, were taken into account. Large berries belonged to “red flowers” while small berries belonged to “black flowers”. Development of the two berry categories was evaluated from pea size (June 12) to harvest (September 16) in terms of berry mass, equatorial berry diameter, soluble solid, pH, titratable acidity, total anthocyanin and flavonoids content (mg kg-1 of grapes, mg berry-1). Significant differences were recorded between the two berry categories in terms of morphological and qualitative parameters. Results confirmed that differences in berry size can exist within a cluster and berries from the same bunch do not have similar metabolic process behavior. The sink strength relationships are mainly influenced by progressive flowering on the same bunch, modifying berry parameters.

Sustainable viticulture is suggested as an interesting strategy for achieving the objectives of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction in terms of mitigation and adaptation. However, knowledge and quantification of the contribution of sustainable vineyard management on climate change impact are needed. Although it is widely assessed by several authors that the agricultural stage has a great impact in the wine chain, very few studies have evaluated the greenhouse gas emission in this phase including the ability of soil to sequester carbon (C) or the off-farm C loss by erosion. This work aimed to provide a vineyard carbon budget (vCB) tool to quantify the impact of grape production on GHG emission including the effects of environmental characteristics and agricultural practices. The vCB was estimated considering four different soil management scenarios: conventional tillage (CT), temporary cover crop with a leguminous species in alternate inter-rows (ACC), temporary cover crop with a leguminous species (CC), permanent cover crop (PCC). The estimation of vCB was applied at territory level in a viticulture area in Sicily (2468 ha of vineyard) using empirical data. Results of the present study showed that the environmental characteristics strongly affect the sustainability of vineyard management, the highest contribution to total CO2 emission is, in fact, given by the C losses by erosion in sloping vineyards. Soils of studied vineyards are a source of CO2 due to the low C inputs and high mineralization rate, except for soil managed by CC which can sequester soil C, contributing positively to vCB. The highest total CO2 emission was estimated in vineyards under CT management (2.31 t ha&minus, 1y&minus, 1), followed by CC (1.27 t ha&minus, 1), ACC (0.69 t ha&minus, 1) and PCC (0.64 t ha&minus, 1). Findings of vCB applied at territory level highlighted the key role of the evaluation of carbon budget (CB) on a larger scale to identify the CO2 emission in relation to climatic and environmental factors. The present study could contribute to provide suggestions to policymakers and farmers for reducing GHG emissions and promote more sustainable grape production practices.

Group A: EDVi = 96 ± 33 ml, ESVi = 56 ± 29 ml, LV EF = 45 ± 10%, global longitudinal strain = -16 ± 5%, E/e' ratio = 10 ± 3, MACE = 1. Group B: EDVi = 130 ± 60 ml, ESVi = 89 ± 43 ml, LV EF = 31 ± 6%, global longitudinal strain = -13 ± 4%, E/e' ratio = 9 ± 3, MACE = 3. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups, in terms of EDVi (p: 0.2), ESVi (p: 0.2), and E/e' ratio (0.9), whereas a significant difference of LV EF, presence of significative mitral regurgitation, and global longitudinal strain were observed (respectively, p: 0.03, p: 0.009, and p: 0.03). conclusion:In our population of children with DCM, LGE shows a global diffuse subendocardial pattern. Presence of LGE seems to play a role in these patients determining a worst global systolic function.

The use and timing of many agronomical practices such as the scheduling of irrigation and harvesting are dependent on accurate vineyard sampling of qualitative and productive parameters. Crop forecasting also depends on the representativeness of vineyard samples during the whole phenological period. This manuscript summarizes the last two years of precision viticulture in Sicily (Italy); agronomic campaigns were carried out in 2012 and 2013 within the "Tenute Rapitalà" and "Donnafugata" farms. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index derived from satellite images (RapidEye) acquired at berry set, pre-veraison and ripening phenological stages (occurred at June, July and August respectively) have been related to production parameters (sugar and anthocyanins contents) at harvesting of a selected red autochthonous cultivar (Nero D'Avola). The research aims to assess how robust are prediction models based on simple linear regression analysis, in particular: 1) whether there is a suitable period for acquiring the remote sensing image to evaluate these parameters at harvesting, when their knowledge is required; 2) if these relationships are consistent between years or need to be re-calibrated; 3) the models transferability to other vineyard of the same cultivar. © 2013 SPIE.

Settore AGR/03 - Arboricoltura Generale E Coltivazioni Arboree ,Vitis vinifera L., progressive flowering , berry variability, grapes quality - Abstract
In this study we reported the results of a second year of study conducted during 2008 season on irrigated Cabernet Sauvignon\ 1103 P vineyard. We addressed the study of whether differences in berry size (within a population of berries from different bunches) would lead to differences in qualitative parameters and whether flowering process can influence berries variability and qualitative parameters. Berries were classified at pea size into two categories according to their equatorial diameter: ≤ 7 mm as small and ≥ 9 mm as large berries. Development of the two berry categories was evaluated from “pea size” (12th June) to harvest (16th September) in terms of berry mass, equatorial berry diameter, soluble solid, pH, titratable acidity, total anthocyanin and flavonoids content (mg\kg of grapes, mg per berry). Significant differences were recorded between the two berry categories in terms of morphological and qualitative parameters. Results confirmed that berry differences exist within a cluster and that berries belonging to the same bunch show different growth patterns and ripening evolution. Definitely source-sink relationships on the same bunch are mainly influenced by the progression in flowering, which in turns modifies the berry parameters.

Agricultural water requirement in arid and semi-arid environments represents an important fraction of the total water consumption, suggesting the need of appropriate water management practices to sparingly use the resource. Furthermore the quality and quantity of some crops products, such as grape, is improved under a controlled amount of water stress. The latter is related, on a side to actual evapotranspiration (ET) through water demand, on the other side to plant water content through leaf water potential. Residual energy balance approaches based on remote sensing allow to estimate the spatial distribution of daily actual ET at plant scale, representing an useful tool to detect its spatial variability across different cultivars and even within each parcel. Moreover, the connection between actual ET and leaf water potential is still not well assessed, especially under water stress conditions, even if farmers use leaf water potential to plan irrigation. However residual energy balance methods are based on the hypothesis that storage terms are negligible, at least during the remote sensor overpass. Indeed, energy balance approaches estimate daily actual ET from the instantaneous value at the overpass time using a daily integration method. The paper first verifies this latter assumption using field data acquired by a flux tower on a whole phenological period. Then, the actual ET values measured by eddy covariance tower were analyzed together with water potential measured using a Scholander chamber; the analysis highlights that, under water stress conditions, daily actual ET is inversely linearly related with water potential. These results suggest the possibility to use remote sensing-based ET as support for irrigation management at plot scale.

Spectral signatures, classification accuracy, Vitis Vinifera L - Abstract

- Abstract
The key to a good estimate of fruit maturity is to collect a sample that is truly representative of the entire harvested unit (i.e., block of one variety, plot). It is important to recognize the high level of variability in fruit composition that exists within a vineyard and even within a single fruit cluster. The target of this research was to determine grape quality selecting a correct sampling strategy (part of cluster, bunch and whole vine) and minimum sample size according to vineyard variability. The results show less variability on part of bunches than whole vine and single bunch samples. Less amount of grape samples, over estimated primary and secondary metabolite levels. Finally the keys to accurate fruit assessment are to use appropriate sample collection methods, proper analytical equipment and careful sensory evaluation.

- Abstract
Pre dawn, stem and leaf water potential evolution under different water regime were investigated in Nero d’Avola cultivar grafted onto 1103 Paulsen. The study was carried out in Rapitalà winery located in Alcamo DOC area in western Sicily. The vines were 2.4 m x 0.95 m spaced, for a density of 4385 vines/ha. Vines were trained to a vertical trellis system, spur pruned. The vineyard was drip irrigated (4 l/h). Three treatments were applied: 1. vines grown without irrigation water: dry condition; 2. vines irrigated until véraison with 560 m3 : late stress; 3. vines irrigated until ripeness with 1120 m3 : no stress. The aim of the study was to find the different behaviors of Ψp, Ψl e Ψs during the season. Water potential measurements (Pre dawn (Ψp), leaf water potential at midday (Ψl) and Stem water potential (Ψs) in bagged leaves at midday, both in shaded leaves) were determined using a Scholander Chamber, the day before and after each irrigation. Different water potential methods showed water content variation (in following irrigation) in different dates. In dry condition Ψp was good indicator of plant water condition whereas Ψl e Ψs during the season, had variable behaviour. Ψp evidenced better differences, between irrigated and not irrigated vines, compare to Ψs and Ψl respectively. So that Ψp is good indicator of irrigation response, in the earlier season. However Ψs and Ψl were good indicators of irrigation response during the end of the season. Higher variability was respectively found for Ψl and Ψs than Ψp This was due to the environmental condition influences. In conclusion a higher number of leaves samples is necessary for Ψs and Ψl than Ψp

- Abstract
Background: Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) parametric mapping is underexplored in cardiac tumors., Objectives: To evaluate the contribution of mapping sequences on the characterization of pediatric tumors., Methods: All pediatric patients referred for cardiac tumors at Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital from June 2017 to November 2023, who underwent CMR with mapping sequences, were included. The diagnosis of tumor type was performed according to signal characteristics on different sequences. Mass parametric mapping for each subtype and interobserver variability was assessed., Results: Sixteen patients were enrolled. The mean age at CMR was 7 ± 5 years. "Traditional" mass-type assessment diagnosed hemangioma (Group A) in 3 patients (19%), fibroma (Group B) in 4 patients (25%), rhabdomyoma (Group C) in 6 patients (37%), and lipoma (Group D) in 3 patients (19%). The ANOVA analysis revealed significant differences in mass native T1 and mass extracellular volume (ECV) values among the four subgroups (p<0.001 for both comparisons). The mean native T1 and ECV values were respectively 1465 ± 158 msec and 54 ± 4% for Group A, 860 ± 118 msec and 93 ± 4% for Group B, 1007 ± 57 msec and 23 ± 5% for Group C, and 215 ± 13 msec and 0 ± 0% for Group D., Conclusions: Mass mapping analysis is feasible and reproducible in children. ECV values provide the most accurate differentiation. Mass ECV consistently resembles normal myocardium in rhabdomyoma, is extremely high (approaching 100%) in fibroma, equals to zero in lipoma, and matches blood pool ECV (1-Hct) in hemangioma., (© The Author(s) 2024.
