We present an observational and numerical study of the borderline hyperbolic comet C/2021 O3 (PANSTARRS) performed during its recent passage through the inner Solar system. Our observations were carried out at OASI and SOAR between 2021 October and 2022 January, and reveal a low level of activity relative to which was measured for other long-period comets. In addition, we observed a decrease in brightness as the comet got closer to the Sun. Our photometric data, obtained as C/2021 O3 approached perihelion on 2022 April 21, show that the comet was much less active than what is usually expected in the cases of long-period comets, with $Af\rho$ values more in line with those of short-period comets (specifically, the Jupiter Family Comets). On the other hand, the observed increase in the value of the spectral slope as the amount of dust in the coma decreased could indicate that the smaller dust particles were being dispersed from the coma by radiation pressure faster than they were injected by possible sublimation jets. The analysis of its orbital evolution suggests that C/2021 O3 could be a dynamically old comet, or perhaps a new one masquerading as a dynamically old comet, with a likely origin in the Solar system., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Results from the TESS mission showed that previous studies strngly underestimated the number of slow rotators, revealing the importance of studying those asteroids. For most slowly rotating asteroids (P > 12), no spin and shape model is available because of observation selection effects. This hampers determination of their thermal parameters and accurate sizes. We continue our campaign in minimising selection effects among main belt asteroids. Our targets are slow rotators with low light-curve amplitudes. The goal is to provide their scaled spin and shape models together with thermal inertia, albedo, and surface roughness to complete the statistics. Rich multi-apparition datasets of dense light curves are supplemented with data from Kepler and TESS. In addition to data in the visible range, we also use thermal data from infrared space observatories (IRAS, Akari and WISE) in a combined optimisation process using the Convex Inversion Thermophysical Model (CITPM). This novel method has so far been applied to only a few targets, and in this work we further validate the method. We present the models of 16 slow rotators. All provide good fits to both thermal and visible data. The obtained sizes are on average accurate at the 5% precision, with diameters in the range from 25 to 145 km. The rotation periods of our targets range from 11 to 59 hours, and the thermal inertia covers a wide range of values, from 2 to <400 SI units, not showing any correlation with the period. With this work we increase the sample of slow rotators with reliable spin and shape models and known thermal inertia by 40%. Jupiter Trojan asteroids are minor bodies that share Jupiter's orbit around the Sun. Although not yet well understood in origin and composition, they have surface properties that, besides being comparable with other populations of small bodies in the Solar System, hold information that may restrict models of planetary formation. Due their importance, there has been a significant increase in an interest in studying this population. In this context arises the NASA Lucy Mission, with a planned launch of 2021. The Lucy Mission will be the first one to address a group of 6 objects with the aim of investigating, in detail, their nature. In order to provide valuable information for mission planning and maximize the scientific return, we carried out ground based observations of four targets of the mission. Aimed at looking for variabilities on the spectra of (3548) Eurybates, (15094) Polymele and (21900) Orus, we performed rotationally resolved visible spectroscopy of them at SOAR Telescope. We also analyzed the first visible spectrum obtained for the main belt asteroid (52246) Donaldjohanson at Gran Telescopio Canarias. The spectra of Orus and Polymele present rather homogeneous characteristics along the surfaces, and their taxa correspond with those of the two dominant populations in the Trojan population, the P- and the D-type group of objects. Spectroscopy of Eurybates, on the other side, suggests that some variation on the characteristics of the reflectance of this body could be related with its collisional history. Donaldjohanson, the only main belt object in the group of targets, shows, according to our visible spectrum, hints of the presence of hydrated materials. Lucy mission will investigate the surface composition of these targets and will shed light on their connections with other minor bodies populations and in their role on the evolution of the Solar System., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Several applications require demographic information of ordinary people in unconstrained scenarios. This is not a trivial task due to significant human appearance variations. In this work, we introduce trixels for clustering image regions, enumerating their advantages compared to superpixels. The classical GrabCut algorithm is later modified to segment trixels instead of pixels in an unsupervised context. Combining with face detection lead us to a clothes segmentation approach close to real time. The study uses the challenging Pascal VOC dataset for segmentation evaluation experiments. A final experiment analyzes the fusion of clothes features with state-of-the-art gender classifiers in ClothesDB, revealing a significant performance improvement in gender classification.

We give a new proof of the sufficiency of Landau's conditions for a non-decreasing sequence of integers to be the score sequence of a tournament. The proof involves jumping down a total order on sequences satisfying Landau's conditions and provides a $O(n^2)$ algorithm that can be used to construct a tournament whose score sequence is any in the total order. We also compare this algorithm with to other algorithms that jump along this total order, one jumping down and one jumping up.

The strong chromatic index of a multigraph is the minimum $k$ such that the edge set can be $k$-colored requiring that each color class induces a matching. We verify a conjecture of Faudree, Gy\'{a}rf\'{a}s, Schelp and Tuza, showing that every planar multigraph with maximum degree at most 3 has strong chromatic index at most 9, which is sharp., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1506.03151

Gender classification (GC) has achieved high accuracy in different experimental evaluations based mostly on inner facial details. However, these results do not generalize well in unrestricted datasets and particularly in cross-database experiments, where the performance drops drastically. In this paper, we analyze the state-of-the-art GC accuracy on three large datasets: MORPH, LFW and GROUPS. We discuss their respective difficulties and bias, concluding that the most challenging and wildest complexity is present in GROUPS. This dataset covers hard conditions such as low resolution imagery and cluttered background. Firstly, we analyze in depth the performance of different descriptors extracted from the face and its local context on this dataset. Selecting the bests and studying their most suitable combination allows us to design a solution that beats any previously published results for GROUPS with the Dago's protocol, reaching an accuracy over 94.2%, reducing the gap with other simpler datasets. The chosen solution based on local descriptors is later evaluated in a cross-database scenario with the three mentioned datasets, and full dataset 5-fold cross validation. The achieved results are compared with a Convolutional Neural Network approach, achieving rather similar marks. Finally, a solution is proposed combining both focuses, exhibiting great complementarity, boosting GC performance to beat previously published results in GC both cross-database, and full in-database evaluations., Comment: Revised version containing 12 pages. Given an edge-coloring of a simple graph, assign to every vertex $v$ a set $S_v$ comprised of the colors used on the edges incident to $v$. The $k$-intersection chromatic index of a graph is the minimum $t$ such that the edge set can be properly $t$-colored, additionally requiring that for every two adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$, $|S_u \cap S_v| \le k$. For all $k \neq 2$, this value is known for subcubic planar graphs, and furthermore, these values are best possible. We naturally extend this definition to multigraphs with bounded edge multiplicity, and we show that every subcubic planar multigraph with edge multiplicity at most two has 2-intersection chromatic index at most 5, which is sharp.
