Litho- and biostratigraphic data are provided of 5 stratigraphic sections in Romania covering the “Badenian” marine flooding that occurred in the Central Paratethys during the middle Miocene (Langhian). The dataset includes stratigraphic logs and descriptions of the profiles, and biostratigraphic analyses on calcareous nannofossils and foraminifera. In addition, characteristic stratigraphic features and representative fossils, including tiny Streptochilus foraminifera in the Campiniţa section in the SE Carpathian Foredeep, are presented in photographs. The data show that the flooding is characterized by the sudden abundance of Langhian calcareous nannofossils and foraminifera with a strong Mediterranean affinity. Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS) typically presents as symmetrical ascending flaccid muscle weakness with areflexia, and with or without sensory symptoms. However, some patients may present atypically, and accordingly, different variants of GBS have been reported in the literature. Pharyngeal-cervical-brachial variant is one of the rare variants and is characterized by muscle weakness extending from the oropharyngeal and neck area to the proximal upper extremities. Many physicians and neurologists are unfamiliar about pharyngeal-cervical-brachial variant, which is often misdiagnosed as brainstem stroke, myasthenia gravis or botulism. Herein, we report a case of pharyngeal-cervical-brachial variant of GBS. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pharyngeal-cervical-brachial variant of GBS in children from Nepal. A 14-year-old Asian male presented with weakness of bilateral upper limb, dysphagia, and nasal intonation of voice. A diagnosis of pharyngeal-cervical-brachial variant of GBS was made after excluding all other possible differentials and based on cerebrospinal fluid analysis and nerve conduction study. The patient improved following conservative management. Pharyngeal-cervical-brachial variant of GBS should always be considered in any patient presenting with symmetrical upper limb weakness and bulbar palsy. This is to ensure early diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of the potential complications.

The Transylvanian Basin (TB) in Romania accommodates a several-hundred-meter thick upper Miocene (Pannonian) sedimentary sequence. Data on its fossils are sparse and scattered in the literature. Consequently, the biostratigraphic subdivision and chronostratigraphic assessment of this sequence, representing about 2.5 Ma, are relatively poorly developed with much uncertainty (Lubenescu 1981). The mollusc and ostracod biostratigraphy were largely based on the biozonations established for the shallow-water deposits of the Vienna Basin many decades ago (Papp 1953). The magnetostratigraphic correlation of some recent polarity measurements partly remained disputable (Vasiliev et al. 2010, de Leeuw et al. 2013). Radiometric age measurements have never been published from these formations. To improve the stratigraphic resolution and the reliability of correlations in the Pannonian of the TB, we investigated outcrops of mostly deep- water formations across the TB. Beside the thoroughly investigated Sarmatian/Pannonian section in Oarba de Mureş(Sütő & Szegő 2008, Vasiliev et al. 2010, Filipescu et al. 2011), we focused our research on the highly fossiliferous sequence of the Guşteriţa outcrop, representing younger Pannonian sediments.

This thesis presents new and re-evaluated chronostratigraphic data on early-middle Miocene (18-12 Ma) marine to lacustrine basins in Central Europe. The data are used to better reconstruct geodynamic, glacio-eustatic and paleoclimatic factors that drove the main paleoenvironmental changes in the Paratethys region. The first chapters showcase the main dating methods used for this research: magnetostratigraphy and 40Ar/39Ar dating. We defined and discussed common problems with paleomagnetism in iron sulfide-bearing sediments. The studied sequence from Lake Pannon was magnetostratigraphically correlated between ~9 and 7 Ma. The new 40Ar/39Ar age results from ashes of three marine intervals from the Pannonian Basin highlight important differences between single and multiple grain radioisotopic datasets. The subsequent chapters focus on dating and reconstructing key events in seas and lakes of Central Europe. The age of the final sea retreat of the ‘Ottnangian Sea’ from the North Alpine Foreland Basin (Ch4) was magnetostratigraphically dated at ~16.6 Ma by using eleven drill cores covering the transition from marine to brackish to freshwater environments (S German Molasse Basin). The new data imply that the late Burdigalian regression was not controlled by eustatics but by tectonics. Stroke in a young female is rare but, when it occurs, has a serious economic, and mental burden to the patient, and family members. Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is one of the rare causes of stroke in young females. We report a case of a 20-year-old female with PPCM complicated by cardioembolic stroke. The patient was started on long-term anticoagulation, and her heart failure regimen was optimized upon discharge. Anticoagulation therapy in cardioembolic stroke prevents further complications.

Accurate dating of the Badenian–Sarmatian transition, a boundary between two regional Middle Miocene stages of the semi-isolated Paratethys Sea, is crucial to understand what event caused the corresponding major turnover in faunal assemblage at that point in time. The general opinion is that this event resulted from a sudden isolation of the Eastern Paratethys from ocean water, due to the closure of the Eastern Anatolian seaway to the Indian Ocean, but it remains debated if the final isolation had a tectonic or climatic cause. This pilot study presents paleomagnetic analyses of two drill cores from the North Carpathian Foredeep in Poland that straddle the Badenian–Sarmatian transition. Rock magnetic experiments, including thermomagnetic runs in air on a Curie balance, and hysteresis measurements on a MicroMag, indicate that the dominant magnetic carrier is the iron sulphide greigite. This is in agreement with the observed gyroremanence obtained during alternating field demagnetization above 40 mT. Alternating field and thermal demagnetization results are in good agreement and show a weak, mixed-polarity, signal for most of the Badenian, rapidly shifting to a much stronger and dominantly normal polarity signal in the Sarmatian part of the cores. First order reversal curves diagrams indicate that the greigite in the Sarmatian part is clearly of diagenetic origin, it thus most likely concerns a secondary overprint by the present-day field that cannot be used for magnetostratigraphic correlations. We conclude that the Paratethys-wide paleoenvironmental change that occurred at the Badenian–Sarmatian transition had probably also created different conditions for the formation and/or preservation of magnetic minerals

Mutation induction is considered as an effective way to enrich plant genetic variation, particularly for traits with a very low level of genetic variation. In the present study, mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency in two morphologically divergent cultivars of cowpea viz., Pusa Komal and Arka Garima were investigated and efficiency was calculated based on pollen sterility (%) and lethality. Seeds were treated with different doses of gamma rays (100, 200, 300, 400, 500 Gy (gray)) and chemical ethylmethane sulphonate (EMS) concentration (0.25%, 0.30%, 0.35%, 0.40%, 0.45%) for 6 h. Untreated seeds were used as control. In general, the mutagen effectiveness and efficiency increased with increasing dosage and then declined. A non-linear effect was seen up with 300 Gy doses of gamma rays in var. Pusa Komal. Dose dependant (more than 200 Gy) linear decline in the effectiveness was observed in Arka Garima. The effectiveness increased with the increase in concentrations of the chemical mutagens till 0.30% in Pusa Komal and 0.35% in Arka Garima and showed a decline. In variety Pusa Komal, mutagenic efficiency decreased at higher dose (lethal) of gamma rays. In case of sterility, the maximum mutagenic efficiency was observed at 100 Gy of gamma rays and 0.25% of EMS. Mutagenic efficiency increased up to 300 Gy dose in case of lethality and 200 Gy for sterility but decreased thereafter in Arka Garima. In case of chemical mutagen, 0.35% treatment proved to be the most efficient concentration for sterility and lethality. Higher efficiency on sterility was observed in both the varieties. Pusa Komal appeared to be more sensitive than Arka Garima
