Abstract

The layered perovskite PrBaCo2O5.5+x demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magnetovolume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo2O5.5+x is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic metallic small-volume (FMSV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier doping, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multiferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new pathway to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

4. Ice Ic without stacking disorder by evacuating hydrogen from hydrogen hydrate

Abstract

Water freezes below 0 {\deg}C at ambient pressure, ordinarily to ice Ih with an ABAB... hexagonal stacking sequence. However, it is also known to produce "ice Ic" nominally with an ABCABC... cubic stacking sequence under certain conditions1, and its existence in Earth's atmosphere, or in comets is debated. "Ice Ic", or called as cubic ice, was first identified in 1943 by K\"onig, who used electron microscopy to study the condensation of ice from water vapor to a cold substrate. Subsequently, many different routes to "ice Ic" have been established, such as the dissociation of gas hydrates, warming amorphous ices or annealing high-pressure ices recovered at ambient pressure, freezing of $\mu$- or nano-confined water. Despite the numerous studies on "ice Ic", its structure has not been fully verified, because the diffraction patterns of "ice Ic" show signatures of stacking-disorder, and ideal ice Ic without stacking-disorder had not been formed until very recently. Here we demonstrate a route to obtain ice Ic without stacking-disorder by degassing hydrogen from the high-pressure form of hydrogen hydrate, C$_2$, which has a host framework that is isostructural with ice Ic. Surprisingly, the stacking-disorder free ice Ic is formed from C$_2$ via an intermediate amorphous or nano-crystalline form under decompression, unlike the direct transformations that occur in the cases of recently discovered ice XVI from neon hydrate, or ice XVII from hydrogen hydrate. The obtained ice Ic shows remarkable thermal stability until the phase transition to ice Ih at 250 K; this thermal stability originates from the lack of dislocations, which promote changes in the stacking sequence. This discovery of ideal ice Ic will promote understanding of the role of stacking-disorder on the physical properties of ice as a counter end-member of ice Ih.

Abstract

Hydrogen bond symmetrisation is the phenomenon where a hydrogen atom is located at the centre of a hydrogen bond. Theoretical studies predict that hydrogen bonds in ice VII eventually undergo symmetrisation upon increasing pressure, involving nuclear quantum effect with significant isotope effect and drastic changes in the elastic properties through several intermediate states with varying hydrogen distribution. Despite numerous experimental studies conducted, the location of hydrogen and hence the transition pressures reported up to date remain inconsistent. Here we report the atomic distribution of deuterium in D2O ice using neutron diffraction above 100 GPa and observe the transition from a bimodal to a unimodal distribution of deuterium at around 80 GPa. At the transition pressure, a significant narrowing of the peak widths of 110 is also observed, attributed to the structural relaxation by the change of elastic properties. Atomic distribution in high-pressure water ice are directly observed, via neutron powder structure analysis, found hydrogen bonds become symmetric at pressures about 80 GPa, marking the transition from ice VII to ice X. 地球の核の主要成分であるFeには軽金属が固溶していると考えられている。本研究ではそのモデル物質としてFe0.95Si0.05合金の水素化物について、水素吸蔵サイトと水素誘起格子体積膨張量を中性子その場観察により評価した。14.7 GPaでの測定とリートベルト解析の結果、水素は八面体サイトのみを占有し、水素誘起体積膨張量は2.33Å^3と算出された。SiがFeに加わることによって水素誘起体積膨張量はほとんど変化しないことが明らかになった。密度一定の条件では水素とSiの量は反相関の関係にあると結論づけた。

Abstract

The structure refinement of black phosphorus was performed at pressures of up to 3.2 GPa at room temperature by powder neutron diffraction techniques. The bond lengths and bond angles between the phosphorus atoms at pressures were precisely determined and confirmed to be consistent with those of the previous single crystal x-ray analysis [A. Brown and S. Rundqvist, Acta Cryst. 19, 684 (1965)]. Although the lattice parameters exhibited an anisotropic compressibility, the covalent P1–P2 and P1–P3 bond lengths were almost independent of pressure and only the P3–P1–P2 bond angle was reduced significantly. On the basis of our results, the significant discrepancy in the bond length reported by Cartz et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 71, 1718 (1979)] has been resolved. Our structural data will contribute to the elucidation of the Dirac semimetal state of black phosphorus under high pressure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The density of the Earth's core is several percent lower than that of iron-nickel alloy under conditions of pressure and temperature equivalent to the Earth's core. Hydrogen is one of the most promising constituents accounting for the density deficit, but hydrogen occupation sites and density decrease of iron-nickel alloy caused by hydrogenation have never been investigated. In this study, the phase relation and crystal structure of Fe0.9Ni0.1Hx(Dx) at high pressures and temperatures up to 12 GPa and 1000 K were clarified by in situ X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements. Under the P-T conditions of the present study, no deuterium atoms occupied tetragonal (T) sites of face-centered cubic (fcc) Fe0.9Ni0.1Dx, although the T-site occupation was previously reported for fcc FeHx(Dx). The deuterium-induced volume expansion per deuterium vD was determined to be 2.45(4) and 3.31(6) Å3 for fcc and hcp Fe0.9Ni0.1Dx, respectively. These vD values are significantly larger than the corresponding values for FeDx. The vD value for fcc Fe0.9Ni0.1Dx slightly increases with increasing temperature. This study suggests that only 10% of nickel in iron drastically changes the behaviors of hydrogen in metal. Assuming that vD is constant regardless of pressure, the maximum hydrogen content in the Earth's inner core is estimated to be one to two times the amount of hydrogen in the oceans. Abstract

The compression behaviors of [delta]-AlOOH and [delta]-AlOOD were investigated under quasi-hydrostatic conditions at pressures up to 63.5 and 34.9 GPa, respectively, using results from synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments conducted at ambient temperature. Because of the geometric isotope effect, at ambient pressure, the a and b axes of [delta]-AlOOD, which define the plane in which the hydrogen bond lies, are longer than those of [delta]-AOOH. Under increasing pressure, the a and b axes of [delta]-AlOOH stiffen at 10 GPa, although the c axis shows no marked change. Identical behavior was found in [delta]-AlOOD, but the change in compressibility was observed at a slightly higher pressure of 12 GPa. Axial ratios a/c and b/c first decrease rapidly with increasing pressure, then begin to increase at pressures > 10 GPa in [delta]-AlOOH and > 12 GPa in [delta]-AlOOD. At these pressures, the pressure dependence of a/b also changes from increasing to decreasing. The unit-cell volumes of [delta]-AlOOH and [delta]-AlOOD become slightly less compressible at high pressures. Assuming [K'.sub.0] = 4, the calculated bulk moduli of [delta]-AlOOH below and above 10 GPa are 152(2) and 219(3) GPa, respectively. Abstract

We have conducted a powder neutron diffraction study of the distorted rutile-type hydrous phase [delta]-AlOO([D.sub.0.74][H.sub.0.26]) at pressures up to 9.2 GPa. Rietveld refinement reveals that the observed diffraction data are best fitted by a model with an asymmetric hydrogen bond (space group P[2.sub.1]nm). The Al-O2 bonds of the Al[O.sub.6] octahedron remain longer than the Al-O1 bonds up to 9.2 GPa, reflecting the fact that O2 is the donor and O1 is the acceptor of the hydrogen bond of O2-D ... O1. As pressure increases, the Al-O1 bond lengths remain almost constant or increase slightly, whereas the longer Al-O2 bonds are more compressible. The O ... O distance of the shared edge of the octahedron is almost constant unlike the other O ... O distances that decrease during compression. The bulk modulus of the Al[O.sub.6] octahedron is determined to be 197.0(4) GPa, where K' is fixed to 4. The Al[O.sub.6] octahedron rotates about 1[degrees] during compression to 9.2 GPa. As pressure increases and the O2 ... O1 distance decreases, the D ... O1 bond is shortened, whereas the O2-D bond becomes elongated, with pressure dependencies of -1.81(9) x [10.sup.-2] [Angstrom]/GPa and 0.57(8) x [10.sup.-2] [Angstrom]/GPa, respectively, implying the symmetrization of the hydrogen bond at high pressure. The decrease in intensity of the 120 reflection as pressure increases suggests that the transition from the structure with space group P[2.sub.1]nm to that with Pnnm would take place in [delta]-A1OOD at high pressure.
