Abstract

There is a natural tendency from the remote sensing community to extract area statistics (i.e. “Pixel counting”) from EO based geospatial products to produce statistical indicators for various purposes. However, geospatial map products suffer from misclassification errors and “pixel counting” can only be justified when the accuracy of such map products reaches a level when these misclassification errors can be considered negligible, but this is possible only in very specific circumstances. Nevertheless, there has been some effort in the Remote Sensing community to assess the accuracy of map products against some form of reference data to ensure that the maps could reach a sufficient level of accuracy. However, there is generally a lack of standards and guidelines and how to perform rigorous map accuracy assessment and rigorous methods for assessing map accuracies and extracting statistics are still lacking as highlighted by McRoberts (2011). Despite substantial advances in this topic in the scientific literature in recent years notably with the paper from Olofsson et al. (2014), this has yet to be fully implemented in operational projects. In addition, even if map accuracy assessment is performed correctly, high accuracy does not necessarily mean that area statistics can be directly extracted from a map.This study is focused on developing the rigorous and appropriate use (i) of geospatial map products from satellite imagery and (ii) statistically sound methods for reporting area estimates and their associated uncertainty.

Abstract

International audience; Water erosion of cultivated soils is a threat to the sustainability of agriculture, especially in Mediterranean areas. For a long time, Mediterranean farmers have thus adopted some soil conservation practices. Actual ditch networks, which are generally associated with terraces, result from historical successive farmer settlements and are one of these soil conservation practices. By intercepting surface run-off, ditches decrease slope length and prevent soil erosion on downstream plots. However, since water erosion hazard and ditch network geometries are highly variable in vineyards landscape and since ditch building and maintaining are costly, the objective of this study was to identify and map the resulting efficiency of ditch networks in preventing soil erosion. For a given area, a ditch network efficiency is defined here as the balance between the network density, i.e. network cumulated length for a given area unit, and the erosion sensitivity over an area which measures the performance of the ditch network in limiting soil erosion. The erosion efficiency of ditch networks was thus identified using both i) computer generated ditch networks with various spatial configurations and ii) the stream power index as an erosion sensitivity indicator, computed from a DTM in which each ditch network was burned. The stream power index of the actual networks were compared with a set of generated networks whose density and topology were selected to maximize the performance in preventing soil erosion thanks to the use of a self-developed optimized stochastic network generator. For four 1 km2 hillslopes, we showed that the performances of actual networks to prevent soil erosion was among the best that were obtained by simulated networks with even greater densities. Furthermore, we showed that the stream power index values that accounted for the actual ditch networks to prevent soil erosion hazard was both minimal and weakly variable in the whole study area (30 km2 ) at hillslope scale, whatever the other erosion factors, namely topography and landuse. This suggested that densities and topologies of actual ditch networks in the catchment have been optimized by farmers through individual acts along the last centuries in order to limit the soil erosion hazard. This also confirms there is very little room to propose new ditch network spatial configurations that better prevent vineyards soil erosion.

Abstract

International audience; Demand for vulnerability assessments is growing in policy-making circles, to support the choice of appropriate measures and policies to reduce the vulnerability of water users and resources. Through the SHIVA ANR project, we are seeking a method to assess and map the vulnerability of farmers in southern India to both climate and socioeconomic changes, and secondly, to assess the costs and benefits associated with trends farmers' vulnerability in the medium and long-term. The project is focusing on southern India 's hard rock area, as in the geological context, both surface and ground water resources are naturally limited. We are also focusing on farming populations as these are the main water users in the area and rely exclusively on groundwater. The area covers southern India's semi-arid zone, where the rainfall gradient ranges from 600 mm to 1100 mm. Vulnerability is expected to vary according to local climatic conditions but also the socioeconomic characteristics of farming households. The SHIVA research team has been divided into six thematic groups in order to address the different scientific issues : downscaling the regional climate scenario, farm area projections, vulnerability assessments and quantification, vulnerability mapping, hydrological modelling and upscaling, and vulnerability impact assessements. Our approach is multidisciplinary to cater for for numerous inherent themes, and integrated to cater for vulnerability as a dynamic and multidimensional concept. The project 's first results after 10 months of research are presented below.

Abstract

National audience; Les Croûtes Biologiques de Surface (BSC), ou croûtes microbiotiques, résultent essentiellement de la colonisation de la surface du sol par des micro-organismes, en majorité des cyanobactéries. Ces croûtes représentent un état structural typique des sols nus dans les écosystèmes semi-arides, arides et désertiques. Les micro-organismes qui les composent ont la particularité de fixer l'azote et le carbone atmosphérique. Ils contribuent ainsi à l'amélioration de la qualité des sols dégradés, notamment via la formation de substrats stables vis-à-vis de l'érosion et l'apport de nutriments. Le développement et le fonctionnement de ces croûtes sont profondément affectés par les changements climatiques et les modalités d'usage des sols. Le projet BIOCRUST a pour objet l'étude des croûtes microbiotiques en zone sahélienne (Fig.1). Les sites d'études choisis permettront l'étude de la dynamique spatio-temporelle des BSC dans des contextes climatiques contrastés et sous la pression anthropique des pratiques pastorales et culturales locales.

Abstract

Agro-ecological and other spatial information can be used to improve our understanding of organic farming research issues, inform the application of research from one area to another, and support collaboration and prioritisation within regional research programmes. Of the 25 organic farming research priorities identifi ed by the IFOAM EU Group in 2004, 15 were related to regional differences in agro-ecological conditions. The other priorities were potentially affected by spatial differences in political, institutional and socio-economic conditions. In relation to agro-ecological data, the capacity to identify i) general agro-ecological areas and ii) areas with specifi c agro-ecological advantage or stress seems particularly useful. The use of a geographic information system (GIS) to integrate spatial data to identify and display such areas is illustrated with two examples.

Monitoring with high resolution land cover and especially of urban areas is a key task that is more and more required in a number of applications (urban planning, health monitoring, ecology, etc.). At the moment, some operational products, such as the “Copernicus High Resolution Imperviousness Layer”, are available to assess this information, but the frequency of updates is still limited despite the fact that more and more very high resolution data are acquired.

27. A critical evaluation of remote sensing based land cover mapping methodologies

Abstract

A novel, disaggregated approach to land cover survey is developed on the basis of land cover attributes; the parameters typically used to delineate land cover classes. The recording of land cover attributes, via objective measurement techniques, is advocated as it eliminates the requirement for surveyors to delineate and classify land cover; a process proven to be subjective and error prone. Within the North York Moors National Park, a field methodology is developed to characterise five attributes: species composition, cover, height, structure and density. The utility of land cover attributes to act as land cover ‘building blocks’ is demonstrated via classification of the field data to the Monitoring Landscape Change in the National Parks (MLCNP), National Land Use Database (NLUD) and Phase 1 Habitat Mapping (P1) schemes. Integration of the classified field data and a SPOT5 satellite image is demonstrated within per-pixel and object-orientated classification environments. Per-pixel classification produced overall accuracies of 81%, 80% and 76% at the field samples for the MLCNP, NLUD and P1 schemes, respectively. However, independent validation produced significantly lower accuracies. These decreases are demonstrated to be a function of sample fraction. Object-orientated classification, exemplified for the MLCNP schema at 3 segmentation scales, achieved accuracies approaching 75%. The aggregation of attributes to classes underutilises the potential of the remotely sensed data to describe landscape variability. Consequently, classification and geostatistical techniques capable of land cover attribute parameterisation, across the study area, are reviewed and exemplified for a sub-pixel classification. Land cover attributes provide a flexible source of field data which has been proven to support multiple land cover classification schemes and classification scales (sub-pixel, pixel and object). This multi-scaled/schemed approach enables the differential treatment of regions, within the remote sensing image, as a function of landscape characteristics and the users’ requirements providing a flexible mapping solution.

28. Comparison of AVHRR, MODIS and VEGETATION for land cover mapping and drought monitoring at 1 km spatial resolution

Abstract

Low spatial resolution remote sensors are one of the best data sources for large area land cover mapping and drought monitoring. This study was concerned with identifying which of the three most operational such sensors (AVHRR, MODIS, and VEGETATION), were likely to help produce the best results within the mentioned applications. A rigorous review of the sensors’ characteristics led to the hypothesis that in land cover mapping and drought monitoring applications MODIS is most likely to achieve the best results followed by VEGETATION and lastly by AVHRR. This hypothesis was tested against experimental results generated within this study. A methodology was developed allowing for unbiased relative comparison of the capacity of the sensors’ Solar Reflective Bands (SRBs) to map land cover, and was applied to data collected over the UK and Greece, for which maps were produced using data collected by each sensor over the same dates and sites, and accuracy estimated using reference data. In the majority of cases the most accurate maps were produced by MODIS data; however, there were cases when maps produced by AVHRR and particularly VEGETATION data were more accurate. Drought monitoring methodologies for low resolution data require historical Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) records extending longer than MODIS and VEGETATION operational times. Towards solving this limitation, the relationships between the sensors’ NDVI measurements over the same targets were investigated. It was found that NDVI data for one sensor could be predicted from NDVI data collected by another sensor with considerable accuracy. Consequently, MODIS and VEGETATION historical NDVI records could be extended based on past AVHRR data, and applications could be benefited by interchanging sensors for provision of NDVI data in the event of a sensor failure. These extended datasets were used to assess drought conditions over Ethiopia with the aim of using the Vegetation Productivity Indicator (VPI) methodology. The sensors’ NDVI data responsiveness to rainfall was assessed, finding MODIS NDVI data to best reflect rainfall conditions, and likely to produce more accurate VPI results. Overall the experimental results generated in this study supported the initial hypothesis.

Abstract

The effects of 2 growth regulators, diflubenzuron (DFB) and OMS 2017, on the ability of females Aedes aegypti to become infected with Molinema dessetae was studied under laboratory conditions. OMS 2017 and DFB had no effect on either the amount of blood ingested or the microfilarial load. The infective potential of females that survived DFB treatment was significantly greater than untreated females, but there was no difference between OMS 2017-treated and control females. The percentage of infective larvae in the head after OMS 2017 and DFB treatments was significantly greater than for control females. Insect growth regulators appear to affect the vectorial competence of mosquitoes, and these results indicate the need for preliminary studies before these compounds are used in large-scale control programs.

Abstract

Lactate dehydrogenase (Ldh) electrophoresis showed the presence of Plasmodium yoelii yoelii in Anopheles stephensi and An. gambiae. The Ldh appeared as an additional band (pLdh) whose activity was more intense with 3-acetyl pyridine adenine dinucleotide as coenzyme than with beta nicotin-amide adenine dinucleotide. Several allelic forms occurred both in the vector and the host. The isoelectric point of Ldh, similar in the vector and host, differed from those of Ldh from mosquito and mouse. The presence of pLdh was detected from the 2nd to the 28th day of infection. The pLdh appeared to be proportional to the number of sporozoites present in infected salivary glands. However, pLdh was not found in salivary glands or midguts, but it was detected in the rest of the corresponding mosquito. The origin and use of pLdh as a marker of Plasmodium in its vector is discussed.

Abstract

Diflubenzuron and OMS 2017 are insect growth regulators that affect larval to adult development in Aedes aegypti (L.) by altering ecdysis. When larvae were exposed to sublethal concentrations, surviving adults express reduced reproductive potential. In mosquitoes, ecdysteroids are important in larval and adult ovarian development. We applied 30% emergence reduction concentrations (EI30) of OMS 2017 and diflubenzuron to 4th-instar Ae. aegypti to determine if changes in ecdysteroid production may explain these physiological effects. Ecdysteroid concentrations were measured in the larvae, pupae, and adults after treatment with both IGRs. After treatment with OMS 2017, the 1st peak of ecdysteroid production in larvae was totally inhibited, but after pupation, ecdysteroid concentrations were the same as in untreated controls. In diflubenzuron-treated larvae, the second peak of production was delayed and the ecdysteroid concentrations of the larvae, pupae, and adults were depressed slightly when compared with untreated controls. The production of ecdysteroids by the ovaries was not altered by sublethal larval treatment with both IGRs. Although OMS 2017 and diflubenzuron belong to the same chemical family, their mode of action apparently is different.

Abstract

The effects of 2 benzoylphenylurea insect growth regulators, OMS 2017 and diflubenzuron, on 4th instar larvae of Aedes aegypti were investigated in the laboratory. Apart from delayed lethal action, possible effects on the reproductive potential were also studied. A baseline concentration of each compound causing 30% emergence inhibition was determined. At this concentration, OMS 2017 affected fecundity of the mosquito but diflubenzuron did not. The fertility of females that survived OMS 2017 exposure also was decreased; 23% of the eggs reached the 4th larval instar. Diflubenzuron did not cause any reduction in fertility. The basal follicle number showed great variability after both treatments as it was alternatively equal, lower, or higher than in the control.

Abstract

In vitro tests, deltamethrin reduced the parasitemic index of Plasmodium falciparum on human red blood corpuscles. In vivo tests, at sublethal doses, deltamethrin limited the development of the sporogonic cycle of Plasmodium yoelii yoelii in Anopheles stephensi. This novel type of antiplasmodic activity involve an intravectorial route and gives an explanation about surprising antimalaria effects observed several months after treatment.
