3. Deep Learning and Crystal Plasticity: A Preconditioning Approach for Accurate Orientation Evolution Prediction

Abstract

Efficient and precise prediction of plasticity by data-driven models relies on appropriate data preparation and a well-designed model. Here we introduce an unsupervised machine learning-based data preparation method to maximize the trainability of crystal orientation evolution data during deformation. For Taylor model crystal plasticity data, the preconditioning procedure improves the test score of an artificial neural network from 0.831 to 0.999, while decreasing the training iterations by an order of magnitude. The efficacy of the approach was further improved with a recurrent neural network. Electron backscattered (EBSD) lab measurements of crystal rotation during rolling were compared with the results of the surrogate model, and despite error introduced by Taylor model simplifying assumptions, very reasonable agreement between the surrogate model and experiment was observed. Abstract

In this work, the effect of heating rate on the phase transformation temperatures was investigated using dilatometry analysis. Continuous heating and isothermal holding above Ac3 temperature on microstructural evolutions in additively manufactured (AM) parts of Fe-Cr-Ni maraging stainless steel were studied. The microstructural features developed within the heating processes were characterized employing electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Austenite reversion was found to take place in two steps for the AM parts by a diffusive mechanism as well as the precipitation reactions. Although grain refinement occurred during the austenite reversion of the continuously heated samples, the microstructure showed a coarser grain size after isothermal heating. Abstract

Maraging steel (MS1)-tool steel (P20) bimetals additively manufactured using the laser powder bed fusion technique were studied under different heat treatment cycles and loading conditions. The hardening of P20 and aging of MS1 were performed sequentially on the hybrid samples. The interfacial characteristics and microstructural evolution of the bulk materials were studied using various advanced electron microscopy techniques. The post-processing procedures successfully produced a uniform martensitic structure throughout the MS1-P20 hybrid steels, leading to a less detectable interface under electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) imaging. The mechanical performance of heat-treated hybrid steels was evaluated using complex loading conditions. 3-point and 4-point bending tests were performed to assess the impact of heat treatments on the mechanical performance of the hybrid steels. Abstract

A novel rolling technique, i.e., skew rolling, was applied to a non-oriented electrical steel containing 0.9 wt% Si, aiming at altering the texture of the final sheets that usually contain the magnetically unfavorable <111>//ND fiber after conventional rolling and annealing. The texture after skew cold rolling was compared to those obtained from conventional rolling and cross rolling and significantly different textures were observed. The cold-rolled steel sheets were then annealed and the texture evolution was investigated using a quasi in situ electron backscatter diffraction technique, i.e., tracking the microtexture of the same area at various holding times at the same temperature. The development of the recrystallization microstructure and microtexture (nucleation and grain growth) was characterized and the effect of skew rolling on the final texture was studied. The mechanisms governing the formation of the final recrystallization texture, e.g., preferential nucleation and selective growth, were elucidated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
