Bimodal magmatism is characteristic of the geodynamic evolution of the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER), which is a reference area for the study of the processes leading to continental break-up before seafloor spreading. There are abundant emissions of basalts and rhyolites, which are in possible parent–daughter relationships. However, the P – T –H2O conditions of production and storage of the basaltic end member remain unclear. Crystallization experiments have been conducted on an alkali basalt from the MER to define its pre-eruptive conditions and shed light on the compositional evolution of derivative liquids and source conditions. The experiments were performed at 100 to 200 MPa, 975°C to 1080°C, varying H2O/CO2 ratios, corresponding to melt water contents of 1 to 5 wt %, at f O2 slightly lower than the Fayalite-Magnetite-Quartz (FMQ) solid buffer. Comparison between the petrological attributes of the starting rock and the experiments shows that the basaltic magma was stored at 150 to 200 MPa, 1050 ± 10°C, with 1 to 2 wt % H2O in melt, with f O2 near FMQ prior to eruption. Geochemical modelling shows that the corresponding mantle source contained about 0.1 wt % H2O, reflecting a metasomatized source. Extensive crystallization of such basalts produces SiO2-rich liquids, which are not yet peralkaline, however. This underscores that extreme fractionation (>90 wt %) is required in order to produce peralkaline derivatives from mildly alkaline basalts. This extreme fractionation and the water-rich nature of the starting basalt readily explain the H2O-rich condition of peralkaline rhyolites that have fueled caldera forming eruptions in the Rift. On 24 August 2016 a seismic event (Mw 6.0) was the first of the long Central Italy sequence (ongoing at the end of 2017) of medium-to-high magnitude earthquakes, with nine Mw ≥5 up to October 2017, and with about 74.000 seismic events registered after 1 year. The largest was the Mw 6.5 30 October 2016 event near Norcia. After the major seismic events, 17 mud volcanoes erupted around Monteleone di Fermo village (Marche region). Mud volcano eruptions generally occurred a few hours to a few days after the main earthquakes, suggesting a seismic triggering. We analyzed the peak ground velocities and dynamic stresses during the three largest earthquakes. We also evaluated the static stress changes in order to assess the potential influence of normal stress changes on the feeder system of the activated mud volcanoes. We find a correlation with dynamic stresses, whereas static stress changes are negligible or negative (with values reaching −0.44 bar, clamping feeder dykes). We conclude that seismic shaking (up to ~3.9 bar during Norcia earthquake) is the dominant driver for these eruptions. Finally, we evaluated the response ratio as a function of the dynamic stress. It increases exponentially with peak dynamic stress varying from 0.3 bar to >50% for peak dynamic stress >2 bar, indicating a link between earthquake shaking and mud volcano activity.

The Neogene and Quaternary hinterland basins of the Northern Apennine have been the subject of different tectonic interpretations. Several studies considered these basins as the result of polyphase normal faulting framed in a continuous crustal extensional regime since the middle Miocene. On the contrary, geophysical and geological studies provided evidence of the important role played by out‐of‐sequence thrusts and backthrusts in the evolution of these basins during a prolongated and intense period of shortening. Here we present an integrated analysis of 2D stacked seismic reflection profiles, stratigraphic and geophysical data from deep exploration wells, gravity data, and published geological and biostratigraphic data for the Valdera‐Volterra basin (central Tuscany, Italy). The results support a polyphase and composite evolution of the basin, subdivided into three main phases. During the late Tortonian–Zanclean, the growth of major thrust‐related anticlines controlled the evolution of the sedimentary basin. The growth of a syncline determined the creation of accommodation space for the sediments. This main compressional deformation occurred during the Messinian and ended during the Late Zanclean. NE migration of the depocentre during the Early Zanclean was identified, likely possibly due to a differential activity growth between the bordering anticlines. During the Piacenzian, an extensional phase has been recognised, superposed to the previous compressive phase. During the Latest Piacenzian–Early Pleistocene (?), a final compressional phase took place resulting in the positive inversion of the Piacenzian WSW dipping main border fault. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rift-Rift-Rift triple junctions are regions where three plates interact, generating complex networks of variably oriented faults. While the geometry of the fault networks is easily constrained from their surface expression, what remains unclear is how the kinematics of faults and their interactions vary spatially, and how these relate to the unusual crustal motions that result from three plates diverging from each other. The Afar depression lies at the triple junction between the African, Arabian, and Somalian plates (in the Horn of Africa), where the unique combination of observational data from structural mapping, seismicity, and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) allows us to understand the link between fault kinematics and plate motions. We complement these observations with an analog model to gain insights into how the patterns and directions of faults relate to overall plate motions. A key finding in both the model and nature is that some adjacent normal faults form at high angles and generate T-shaped structures. These purely normal faults are synchronously active, which means that the extension direction varies ~90° locally. These kinematic contrasts in our model and in nature occur despite the relatively smooth pattern of overall surface motions. The results indicate that normal faults interacting at high angles to form the T-shaped structures can evolve synchronously within a stress field that varies gently in magnitude but dramatically in orientation over a few kilometers.
