The use of γ-irradiation to tailor the physicochemical properties of materials is not widely applied to layered alkali metal oxides. Herein, we show that γ-irradiation (up to 400 kGy) of Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 leads to a sodium-poor, hydroxyl-rich analogue where the layered structure, plate-like morphology, and textural properties are preserved. The deintercalation of sodium ions modifies the Ti-O bond lengths and expands the unit cell; the latter is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. 23 Na solid-state NMR suggests the transport of the symmetric, 7-fold Na2 sites to an intermediate environment, which is closer to the asymmetric, 9-fold Na1 sites. An 8 wt % mass loss (1.4 mol water/mol titanate) is observed, indicating an increased concentration of protons/hydroxyls. These hydroxyl groups (i.e., lattice protons) possess higher thermal stability than solely surface-adsorbed ones in the nonirradiated sample. At 200-400 kGy, the proton conduction (50 °C and ∼70% RH) of ∼10 -6 S·cm -1 is 1 order of magnitude larger than that in the nonirradiated sample; the relaxation time decreases from 30 to 2-6 μs with γ-irradiation. The γ-dose dependence of dielectric loss is also present and analyzed using the Jonscher universal power law, indicating the low-frequency dispersion behavior characteristics of high charge densities.

Fluorescent sensor-based carbon dots (CDs) have significantly developed for sensing metal ions because of their great physical and optical properties, including tunable fluorescence emission, high fluorescence quantum yield, high sensitivity, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility. In this research, a green synthetic approach via simple gamma irradiation for the carbon dot synthesis from water hyacinth was developed since water hyacinth has been classified as an invasive aquatic plant containing cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The thiol moiety (SH) was further functionalized on the surface functional groups of CDs as the "turn-off" fluorescent sensor for metal ion detection. Fluorescence emission displayed a red shift from 451 to 548 nm when excited between 240 and 500 nm. The quantum yield of CDs-SH was elucidated to be 13%, with strong blue fluorescence emission under ultraviolet irridiation (365 nm), high photostability and no photobleaching. The limit of detection was determined at micromolar levels for Hg 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Fe 3+ . CDs-SH could be a real-time monitoring sensor for Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ as fluorescence quenching was observed within 2 min. This study introduces a gamma pretreatment of water hyacinth powder for activated carbon (AC) production with improved electrochemical properties for supercapacitor applications. The structural and morphological changes of post-irradiation were meticulously analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The pretreatment significantly modifies the pore structure and reduces the particle size of the resulting activated carbon (WHAC). Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms indicated a substantial increase in micropore volume with escalating doses of gamma irradiation. Electrochemically, the activated carbon produced from pretreated WH at 100 kGy exhibited a marked increase in specific capacitance, reaching 257.82 F g -1 , a notable improvement over the 95.35 F g -1 of its untreated counterpart, while maintaining 99.40% capacitance after 7000 cycles. These findings suggest that gamma-pretreated biomasses are promising precursors for fabricating high-performance supercapacitor electrodes, offering a viable and environmentally friendly alternative for energy storage technology development.

Activated carbons (ACs) were developed from palm petiole via a new eco-friendly method composed of highly diluted H 2 SO 4 hydrothermal carbonization and low-concentration KOH-activating pyrolysis followed by gamma-induced surface modification under NaNO 3 oxidizing environment. The prepared graphitic carbons were subsequently used as an active material for supercapacitor electrodes. The physiochemical properties of the ACs were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical performance of the fabricated electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Even treated with extremely low H 2 SO 4 concentration and small KOH:hydrochar ratio, the maximum S BET of 1365 m 2  g -1 for an AC was obtained after gamma irradiation. This was attributed to radiation-induced interconnected network formation generating micropores within the material structure. The supercapacitor electrodes exhibited electric double-layer capacitance giving the highest specific capacitance of 309 F g -1 as well as excellent cycle stability within 10,000 cycles.
