1. The Relationship between Experienced and Observed Harassment: The Role of Organizational Identification and Perceived Justice in a Higher Educational Context

Abstract

Building on cognitive schema theory, this study investigates the relationship between experienced and observed harassment in a university setting. It also examines two moderators--organizational identification and perceived justice. Using a cross sectional survey, data were gathered from 276 academics and staff in a private university with approximately 9000 students located in the southeastern United States. The results suggest that employees who personally experience workplace harassment are more likely to observe others as being targets of harassment. They also suggest that organizational identification and perceptions of organizational justice moderate the relationship between experienced harassment and observed harassment. Overall, the findings support the important role of schemas in understanding how pre-organized cognitive templates can impact perceptions of observed harassment in an academic context, and also stress the central roles of organizational identification and perceived justice in managing harassment. With respect to practical implications for higher educational institutions, human resource managers must work hard at making sure that faculty, staff and students perceive their universities to have fair systems in place so they can have trust in their institutions, thus increasing the likelihood that individuals will more likely disassociate their own negative experiences from the harassment schema. Managers should also implement programmes to build positive organizational cultures or school spirit.

Abstract

PurposeWith the growing trend of digital technology in global supply chains, how to manage global supply chain relationships under digital transformation becomes a critical issue. However, academic research in this area is sparse. This study develops and tests a theoretical framework of the moderating effect of virtual integration on interorganziational governance in international customer supplier relationships.Design/methodology/approachWe chose to examine the specific cross-border relationships between Taiwanese suppliers and their international OEMs because Taiwanese suppliers tend to be smaller than their international OEM customers, and thus their relationships usually show power asymmetry. Furthermore, the Taiwanese electronics industry offers a valuable empirical context because its industry members have served as pioneers in information technology development, have championed cross-border relationships with US and European industry leaders and are actively participating in the world economyFindingsOur empirical findings indicate that virtual integration will strengthen the effect contractual governance on relationship performance. However, the moderating effect of virtual integration on relational governance is not significant. The paper discusses the theoretical and managerial implications in the end.Originality/valueThis study contributes to interorganizational governance literature in international contexts. Previous work on international relationship management has focused much on MNE buyers' perspectives and paid little attention to the suppliers' perspectives. This study extends this stream of research by empirically examining how suppliers can govern their MNEs' customers via different governance mechanisms. The findings extend literature on virtual integration and show that virtual integration can complement detailed contract and safeguard opportunism, which in turn, enhance relationship performance in international customer–supplier relationships.

Abstract

Blending social identity theory (SIT) and institutional theory, this study explores new types of liability of foreignness focusing on the reason why legitimacy is more difficult to maintain for foreign firms than domestic firms. Specifically, we argue that because ex ante legitimacy property and magnified foreign identity reinforce each other, a foreign firm is likely to suffer more severe legitimacy loss from an organizational crisis than a domestic firm does, and a foreign firm's crisis is likely to have a stronger negative spillover effect on other foreign firms than on other domestic firms within the same industry as another type of liability of foreignness. The research framework is tested using the recall data from the US automobile industry between 2006 and 2013. The empirical results confirm that foreign firms are indeed at a higher risk of losing legitimacy not only from their own crises but also those of other foreign firms. Furthermore, the negative effects of a foreign firm's crisis seem to spread only to other foreign firms while domestic firms are not as significantly affected from it. However, such benefit does not exist for foreign firms when it is a domestic firm experiencing a crisis.
