We conducted this study to describe the feasibility of high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) in characterizing a breast implant in patients receiving an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty.The current study was conducted in a total of 612 patients (n =6 12) receiving an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty at other hospitals between August 31, 2017 and August 31, 2020. Of these, 136 patients (n = 136; 272 breasts) receiving reoperation were included in the current study. We compared between the patients' subjective awareness of a breast implant and its HRUS findings and an agreement between HRUS findings of a breast implant and its findings at reoperation.The proportion of the patients receiving a silicone gel-filled breast implant was increased from 65.44% (89/136) to 81.61% (111/136) on HRUS. Moreover, HRUS was effective in identifying a manufacturer of the device.In conclusion, our results indicate that HRUS is feasible in characterizing a breast implant in patients receiving an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty. Hypoxia is an increasing threat to aquatic ecosystems and its impact on economically and ecologically important marine fish species needs to be studied. Especially, the consequences of hypoxia when occurring along with harmful algal blooms (HABs) are currently not well documented. In this study, we investigated the effect of constant and intermittent (daily and weekly) hypoxia on respiration, immunity, hematological parameters, and oxidative status of red seabream for 2, 4, and 6 weeks. Under constant and daily intermittent hypoxia, respiration rate significantly increased in 2 weeks compared to the control. Constant and daily intermittent hypoxia caused significant decreases in the activity of alternative complement pathway, lysozyme, and the level of total immunoglobulin (Ig), as well as significant increases in the concentrations of cortisol, hemoglobin, red blood cells, and white blood cells. A significantly higher level of malondialdehyde was measured for all hypoxia-exposed groups, indicating lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. At 4 and 6 week, the level of glutathione and enzymatic activities of glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase were significantly decreased after constant and daily intermittent hypoxia challenge. The enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were significantly increased at 2 and 4 weeks, but they were decreased after 6 weeks by constant and daily intermittent hypoxia. Constant and daily intermittent hypoxia with subsequent non-toxin producing dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides treatment significantly reduced the respiration rate in 3 and 24 h exposure and survival rate of red seabream. Taken together, the red seabream can be vulnerable to HABs under hypoxia condition through inhibition of immunity and antioxidant defense ability. Our findings are helpful in better understanding of molecular and physiological effects of hypoxia, which can be used in aquaculture and fisheries management.

The environmental impacts of microplastics (MPs) are increasingly of concern, particularly for their sources, global distribution, and persistency in aquatic ecosystems. Although the ubiquitous and persistent nature of MPs in waterbodies is evident, their effects and health implications for aquatic animals are still open to debate. The brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana was exposed to different concentrations (1–1000 particles mL−1) of four sizes (1, 3, 6, and 10 μm) of non-functionalized polystyrene microbeads. To measure MPs effects, several physiological and biochemical parameters such as ingestion and egestion, stress biomarkers [e.g., heat shock protein 70 (hsp70) family, enzymatic activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)], acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and survival rate for 30 days were analyzed. Exposure to waterborne MPs showed clear ingestion and egestion in A. franciscana. Exposure to relatively larger sizes of 1000 particles mL−1 MPs dose–dependently increased mRNA expression of hsp70 families and enzymatic activities of CAT and SOD within 96 h. Significant inhibitory effects on AChE activity were observed in response to 1000 particles mL−1 with increases in mortality for 30 days. Thirty-day survival of juveniles was dose-dependently affected, with greater effects seen at 1000 particles mL−1 of MPs. Our results suggest that MPs exposure to the early stages of brine shrimp could be detrimental for population maintenance through inhibition of cholinergic system and the induction of acute cell stress, including oxidative stress.

Background We conducted this study to assess preliminary 2-year safety outcomes of an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty using the BellaGel® SmoothFine in the context of the first Korean case of a medical device fraud. Methods Our clinical series of the patients (n = 579; 1,158 breasts) received augmentation using the BellaGel® SmoothFine, Naturgel™, Motiva Ergonomix™, Eurosilicone Round Collection™, Natrelle® INSPIRA™, Natrelle® 410, Mentor® MemoryGel Xtra or Microthane®. The patients were evaluated for incidences of postoperative complications and Kaplan-Meier survival and hazards. Results Overall, there were a total of 101 cases (17.4%) of postoperative complications; these include 31 cases (5.4%) of shape deformity, 21 cases (3.6%) of CC, 18 cases (3.1%) of early seroma, 8 cases (1.4%) of infection, 5 cases (0.9%) of early hematoma, 1 case (0.2%) of delayed hematoma, 1 case (0.2%) of rupture and 1 case (0.2%) of ripping. Moreover, there were also 15 cases (2.6%) of other complications. There were significant differences in incidences of postoperative complications between the breast implants from different manufacturers (P = 0.034). The Natrelle® 410 showed the longest survival (333.3±268.2 [141.5–525.1] days). A subgroup analysis showed that there were no significant differences in incidences of postoperative complications between the breast implants (P = 0.831). Moreover, the Natrelle® INSPIRA™ showed the longest survival (223.7±107.1 [-42.3–489.6] days). Conclusions Here, we describe preliminary 2-year safety outcomes of an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty using the BellaGel® SmoothFine in the context of the first Korean case of a medical device fraud.

Tumor markers such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) are widely used for monitoring breast cancer. However, the prognostic efficacy of preoperative elevations of CEA and CA15-3 levels in breast cancer patients remains controversial. We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological parameters of 149,238 patients in the Korean Breast Cancer Society Registry Database who underwent surgery between January 2000 and December 2015. The patients with elevated CA15-3/CEA levels had worse overall survival (OS) than the patients with normal CA15-3/CEA levels. For the luminal A subtype, the CA15-3- and CEA-elevated group had a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.14 (95% CI 1.01–4.55). The CA15-3-elevated group had an HR of 2.38 (95% CI 1.58–3.58) and the CEA-elevated group had an HR of 1.79 (95% CI 1.20–2.68) compared to the normal group. For the luminal B subtype, the CA15-3- and CEA-elevated group had an HR of 3.99 (95% CI 2.23–7.16), whereas the CA15-3-elevated group had an HR of 2.38 (95% CI 1.58–3.58) and the CEA-elevated group had an HR of 1.79 (95% CI 1.20–2.68). For the HER2 subtype, elevated CEA level was the only independent prognostic factor. However, for the triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtype, elevated preoperative CEA and CA15-3 levels were not significant prognostic factors for OS. Preoperative CEA and CA15-3 levels showed varying prognostic ability according to breast cancer subtype. Preoperative CA15-3 and CEA elevation are significant prognostic factors for luminal breast cancer, but they were not significant factors for TNBC.

The present study aimed to investigate the embryotoxicity of endosulfan (ES) on marine medaka Oryzias javanicus embryos using several toxicity endpoints such as measurements of oxidative stress, DNA damage, cell death, and AChE enzyme activity upon different concentrations of waterborne ES. Fertilized marine medaka embryos (3 hpf) were exposed to three concentrations of ES (86.2, 172.4, and 862 µg L−1). Oxidative stress parameters [e.g. intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione (GSH)], nitric oxide (NO) production, DNA damage, cell death, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were analyzed. The highest concentration 862 µg L−1 of ES significantly increased the intracellular ROS, MDA, GSH, and NO in the embryos compared to control groups. Endosulfan increased DNA damage and cell death in the marine medaka embryos during post fertilization period. In the case of AChE, a significant inhibition was detected in the 862 µg L−1 ES-treated medaka embryo. In addition, intracellular GSH level was increased by 172.2 µg L−1 ES exposure in medaka embryos. Our results suggest that ES may induce strong cell death through increase of oxidative stress and DNA damage. Inhibition of AChE would represent potential neurotoxicity on cholinergic system of marine medaka embryos. The parameters tested in this study would be a useful biomarker for risk assessment of ES as an early signal of its toxicity.

We conducted this study to explore the value of the capsule thickness as an indicator of the severity of capsular contracture (CC) alternatively to the Baker classification system in patients who were treated with an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty. A total of 117 eligible patients (202 breasts) were included in the current study. We measured the capsule thickness using ultrasound and histologic examination in association with the Baker grades I, II, III and IV. Then, we analysed agreement of the capsule thickness between the two methods using an intra-correlation coefficient (ICC 2,1) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The CC of Baker grades II, III and IV (105 breasts), for which the capsule thickness could be measured using US, served as Model 1. Moreover, Model 1 including the CC of Baker grades I (97 breasts) served as Model 2. The capsule thickness was measured as 0.58 ± 0.11 (0.4–0.8) mm, 1.07 ± 0.16 (0.8–1.31) mm and 1.89 ± 0.55 (1–4.1) mm on ultrasound in association with Baker grades II, III and IV, respectively. In addition, it was also measured as 0.28 ± 0.07 (0.09–0.41) mm, 0.58 ± 0.08 (0.42–0.75) mm, 1.06 ± 0.14 (0.79–1.34) mm and 2.13 ± 1.14 (1.38–6.98) mm on histologic examination in association with Baker grades I, II, III and IV, respectively. In Model 1 and 2, the ICC was calculated as 0.942 (95%CI 0.914–0.961) and 0.955 (95%CI 0.940–0.966), respectively. The cut-off values between the Baker grades I–II, II–III and III–IV were calculated as 0. mm, 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm, respectively. In conclusion, the capsule thickness might be used as an indicator of the severity of CC alternatively to the Baker classification system. But further studies are warranted to establish our results. Alexandrium affine is a global harmful algal bloom (HAB)-forming dinoflagellate. In this study, the effect of non-toxin-producing A. affine on the gill and liver tissues of red seabream, Pagrus major, was analyzed over 24 h exposure and 2 h depuration phases. After exposure to three concentrations of A. affine (4,000, 6,000, and 7,000 cells mL−1), survival rates, respiration rates, immunities (lysozyme, total Ig), hepatic biomarkers (alanine aminotransferase, ALT; aspartate aminotransferase, AST; and alkaline phosphatase, ALP), lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA), and antioxidant defense systems (glutathione, GSH; catalase, CAT; superoxide dismutase, SOD; glutathione peroxidases, GPx; and glutathione reductase, GR) were analyzed in gill and liver tissues. Dose-dependent decreases in survival and respiration rates were detected in red seabream. A. affine levels of to 6,000 and 7,000 cells mL−1 induced immunosuppression and hepatic impairment in both tissues, as measured by significant decreases in lysozyme activity, total Ig level, ALT, AST, and ALP content. The levels of GSH, CAT, SOD, GPx, and GR were significantly decreased in the gills and liver in response to 7,000 cells mL−1 of A. affine at 24 h, and MDA was elevated. However, different response patterns were observed between tissues in response to 4,000 cells mL−1. Activity of antioxidant defense enzymes was significantly elevated in the liver but decreased in the gills. This suggests that the gills were more vulnerable than the liver. In the case of 6,000 and 7,000 cells mL−1 treatments, higher susceptibility was also detected at 3 h in the gill compared to the overall responses of each parameter measured in liver. Taken together, direct attachment of A. affine to the gill tissue strongly affects immunity and antioxidant capacity of red seabream even after a short exposure period. These results could be helpful for understanding HAB-mediated effects in marine fish.

Chronic shoulder pain is a common complication in breast cancer patients after surgery. Chronic shoulder pain after breast cancer surgery was formerly considered as neuropathic pain, however the pathophysiology including structural damages has not been assessed comprehensively. We hypothesized that the structural change could be one of the cause of shoulder pain after breast cancer surgery and evaluated various ultrasonography findings of the shoulder in breast cancer patients with chronic shoulder pain. Patients who were suffering from chronic shoulder pain on unilateral side for at least 3 months after breast cancer surgery were enrolled from a single tertiary hospital. Demographic and clinical data were collected at the baseline. Articular and adjacent structures of both shoulders (painful and contralateral side) were evaluated by ultrasonography. The ultrasonography findings were compared between painful and contralateral sides. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with abnormal ultrasonography findings. Fifty-two female patients (average age of 55) were enrolled. In this study, the effect of ammonia derived from different stocking densities on immunological, hematological, and oxidative stress parameters was analyzed in the blood or liver of red seabream. Density- and time-dependent increases in inorganic nitrogen compounds were measured for 20 days by analyzing the three major inorganic nitrogen compounds, total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen. Three immunity parameters, alternative complement activity, lysozyme activity, and total immunoglobulin content were significantly decreased in the blood at the highest stocking density (10 kg m−3). The concentrations of hemoglobin and white blood cells were significantly decreased at 10 kg m−3, while there was no significant change in red blood cells. The significant increases in cortisol level and the enzymatic activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase at 10 kg m−3 clearly supported inorganic nitrogen compounds-triggered stress. A significant elevation of lipid peroxidation value and depletion of intracellular glutathione were observed at 5 and/or 10 kg m−3 in the liver tissue. The hepatic enzymatic activities of antioxidant defense enzymes, catalase and superoxide dismutase were also significantly increased. When a protein skimmer removes the inorganic nitrogen compounds at the highest density, most parameters showed no significant change. Taken together, these results suggest that accumulated inorganic nitrogen compounds at the highest stocking density inhibit innate immunity and induce oxidative stress in red seabream. This information will be helpful to maintain homeostasis of red seabream by controlling immunity and oxidative status through inorganic nitrogen compounds removal in intensive culture condition.

BRCA1/2 are breast cancer susceptibility genes that are involved in DNA repair and transcriptional control. They are dysregulated in breast cancer, making them attractive therapeutic targets. Here, we performed a systematic multiomics analysis to expound BRCA1/2 functions as prognostic biomarkers in breast cancer. First, using different web-based bioinformatics platforms (Oncomine, TIMER 2.0, UALCAN, and cBioportal), the expression of BRCA1/2 was assessed. Then, the R package was used to analyze the diagnostic value of BRCA1/2 in patients. Next, we determined the relationship between BRCA1/2 mRNA expression and prognosis in patients (PrognoScan Database, R2: Kaplan Meier Scanner and Kaplan–Meier Plotter). Subsequently, the association of BRCA1/2 with mutation frequency alteration and copy number alterations in breast cancer was investigated using the cBioportal platform. After that, we identified known and predicted structural genes and proteins essential for BRCA1/2 functions using GeneMania and STRING db. Finally, GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses were performed to elucidate the potential biological functions of the co-expression genes of BRCA1/2. The BRCA1/2 mRNA level in breast cancer tissues was considerably higher than in normal tissues, with AUCs of 0.766 and 0.829, respectively. Overexpression of BRCA1/2 was significantly related to the worse overall survival (p < 0.001) and was correlated to clinicopathological characteristics including lymph nodes, estrogen receptors, and progesterone receptors (p < 0.01). The alteration frequencies of both the gens have been checked, and the results show that BRCA1 and BRCA2 show different alteration frequencies. Their mutation sites differ from each other. GO and KEGG showed that BRCA1/2 was mainly enriched in catalytic activity, acting on DNA, chromosomal region, organelle fission, cell cycle, etc. The 20 most frequently changed genes were closely related to BRCA1/2, including PALB2 and RAD51 relatively. Our study provides suggestive evidence of the prognostic role of BRCA1/2 in breast cancer and the therapeutic target for breast cancer. Furthermore, BRCA1/2 may influence BRCA prognosis through catalytic activity, acting on DNA, chromosomal regions, organelle fission, and the cell cycle. Nevertheless, further validation is warranted.

This study investigated the prognostic value of FDG PET/CT radiomic features for predicting recurrence in patients with early breast invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). The medical records of consecutive patients who were newly diagnosed with primary breast IDC after curative surgery were reviewed. Patients who received any neoadjuvant treatment before surgery were not included. FDG PET/CT radiomic features, such as a maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), skewness, kurtosis, entropy, and uniformity, were measured for the primary breast tumor using LIFEx software to evaluate recurrence-free survival (RFS). A total of 124 patients with early breast IDC were evaluated. Eleven patients had a recurrence (8.9%). Univariate survival analysis identified large tumor size (>2 cm, p = 0.045), high Ki-67 expression (≥30%, p = 0.017), high AJCC prognostic stage (≥II, p = 0.044), high SUVmax (≥5.0, p = 0.002), high MTV (≥3.25 mL, p = 0.044), high TLG (≥10.5, p = 0.004), and high entropy (≥3.15, p = 0.003) as significant predictors of poor RFS. After multivariate survival analysis, only high MTV (p = 0.045) was an independent prognostic predictor. Evaluation of the MTV of the primary tumor by FDG PET/CT in patients with early breast IDC provides useful prognostic information regarding recurrence.

Microcystins (MC) produced by several cyanobacteria are potent hepatotoxins, whereas the toxicokinetics and subsequent detrimental effects ofMCare not fully understood in marine bivalves. In this study, the accumulation and depuration pattern of MC-Leucine-Arginine (MC-LR) along with the antioxidant response were investigated in the gill tissue of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and blue mussel Mytilus edulis exposed to 0.1, 1, 10, and 20 µg L-1 MC-LR for 7 days. Time- and concentration-dependent accumulation and depuration of MC-LR were observed in the gill tissue during the exposure and depuration phases. The values for maximum accumulation of MC-LR and malondialdehyde content were statistically significant (P < 0.05) at the end of exposure (day 7) to 20 µg L-1 MC-LR for both the bivalves, and at the beginning of the depuration period when M. edulis and C. gigas were exposed to 10 and 20 µg L-1, respectively. Waterborne metals can adversely affect an organism’s innate defenses through oxidative stress. In the present study, the marine mysid Neomysis awatchensis was exposed to sublethal concentrations (1/10 and 1/5 of the median LC50s) of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn for 48 or 96 h at the juvenile and adult developmental stages, and the dose- and age-specific antioxidant defense system responses were characterized. Metal accumulation and modulation of four key antioxidant biomarkers, malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase, and catalase, were measured in juvenile and adult mysids. Based on LC50, level of metal toxicity was dependent on metal concentration, developmental stage, and the exposure duration. Intracellular MDA content was increased in the As-, Cu-, Pb-, and Zn-exposed juvenile mysids after exposure for 48 and/or 96 h, while increases in MDA content were observed in adult mysids following Cu and Zn exposure. Interestingly, GSH content was differentially modulated, where intracellular GSH levels decreased in juvenile mysids following Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn exposure, but significantly increased in metal-exposed adult mysids, except for Pb exposure. The catalase and superoxide dismutase activities displayed similar stage-specific increases or decreases as also observed for the different GSH levels, suggesting that the susceptibility to and defense against metal-induced oxidative stress differed based on stage. Modulations in MDA and GSH content and enzymatic activity of the antioxidant defense system indicate that mysid antioxidant defense system factors are intimately connected during control of oxidative imbalances with different capacities at different developmental stages.
