Cancer: Protein enhances survival of tumor cells under stress A cytoskeletal protein that helps tumors avoid cell death offers a promising new drug target for fighting cancer. A team led by Jang Hyun Choi and Sun Sil Choi of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea, detailed how a protein called Flightless I (FliI) that normally regulates the remodeling of structural filaments in the cell can, in colorectal cancer cells, serve as a tumor promoter through its action on calcium levels. Typically, cells respond to chronic stress by altering calcium signaling to promote their own death. In tumors, however, FliI maintains normal calcium levels to enhance cell survival even in the face of chemotherapy and other stressful stimuli. Suppressing FliI activity could thus help sensitize cancer cells to other stress- and death-inducing drug regimens.

We report a case of clinically occult diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the middle turbinate (MT) identified by 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ( 18F-FDG PET/CT) in a 71-year-old man along with imaging findings. DLBCL was presented with a hypermetabolic right MT [maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) = 8.8 gm/dL] on 18F-FDG PET/CT, while rhinologic examination was normal. CT showed nothing but slightly more intense enhancement of the right MT compared with the opposite side. The disease progressed during next 7 months until follow-up CT demonstrated solidly enhancing mass occupying entire right nasal cavity which was intensely hypermetabolic (SUVmax = 12.8 gm/dL). Surgical biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. Follow-up CT and 18F-FDG PET/CT performed after chemotherapy demonstrated complete resolution of DLBCL of the right nasal cavity including the right MT. This is thought to be the first case report in the literature concerning clinically occult DLBCL presenting as a hypermetabolic MT on 18F-FDG PET/CT.

This paper proposes a condition monitoring method for the early defect detection in a chain sprocket drive (CSD) system and classification of fault types before a catastrophic failure occurs. In the operation of a CSD system, early defect detection is very useful in preventing system failure. In this work, eight fault types associated with the CSD system components, such as the gear tooth, bearings, and drive motor shaft, were arbitrarily damaged and incorporated into the CSD system. To detect the fault signals during the CSD system operation, the vibration was measured using an Internet of Things (IoT) device, which features a wireless MEMS accelerometer, Bluetooth function, Wi-Fi function, and battery. The IoT device was mounted on the gearbox housing. The measured one-dimensional vibration time-series was transformed into time-scale images using continuous wavelet transform (CWT). A convolution neural network (CNN) was employed to extract deep features embedded in the images, which are closely related to fault types. To update the learning parameters of the CNN, the RMSprop learning algorithm was applied, and the CNN was trained using 500 image samples. Multiple-classification performance of the trained network was tested using 100 image samples. Feature maps for different fault types were obtained from the final CNN convolution layer. For the visualization of fault types, t-stochastic neighbor embedding was employed and applied to the feature maps to convert high-dimensional data into two-dimensional data. Two-dimensional features enabled excellent classification of the eight fault types and one normal type.

Finding technical issues associated with equipment scale-up is an important subject for the investigation of pyroprocessing. In this respect, electrolytic reduction of 1 kg UO2, a unit process of pyroprocessing, was conducted using graphite as an anode material to figure out the scale-up issues of the C anode-based system at pilot scale. The graphite anode can transfer a current that is 6–7 times higher than that of a conventional Pt anode with the same reactor, showing the superiority of the graphite anode. UO2 pellets were turned into metallic U during the reaction. However, several problems were discovered after the experiments, such as reaction instability by reduced effective anode area (induced by the existence of Cl2 around anode and anode consumption), relatively low metal conversion rate, and corrosion of the reactor. These issues should be overcome for the scale-up of the electrolytic reducer using the C anode.

We report the case of a patient with mitral regurgitation complicated by type B dissection and Marfan syndrome (MFS) who was managed successfully with minimally invasive mitral valve repair. Without type A aortic dissection or aortic root dilation, MFS patients may develop mitral valve regurgitation, as in this case, and need v alve surgery t o improve their symptoms a nd l ong-term s urvival. However, it i s not clear that a full sternotomy and prophylactic aortic surgery are necessary. Although retrograde perfusion to the dissected aorta is controversial, our approach minimizes the risk of future anticipated aortic surgery in MFS patients.

The single-suture neochorda-folding plasty technique is a modification of existing mitral valve repair techniques. In the authors’ experience, its simplicity, reliability, and versatility make it a useful technique for mitral valve repair, especially when a minimally invasive approach is used.

BackgroundThe activation of guanine nucleotide binding protein-coupled receptors, such as adenosine receptor (ADR) and opioid receptor (OPR), protects the heart against ischemia and reperfusion injury. We hypothesized that ADR or OPR might be involved in polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-induced cardioprotection.MethodsLangendorff perfused rat hearts were subjected to 30 min of regional ischemia and 2 h of reperfusion. Hearts were treated with 10 µM of EGCG, with or without the ADR or OPR antagonist at early reperfusion. Infarct size measured with 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining was chosen as end-point.ResultsEGCG significantly reduced infarct volume as a percentage of ischemic volume (33.5 ± 4.1%) compared to control hearts (14.4 ± 1.1%, P < 0.001). A nonspecific ADR antagonist 8-(p-sulfophenyl) theophylline hydrate (27.1 ± 1.9%, P < 0.05 vs. EGCG) but not a nonspecific OPR antagonist naloxone (14.3 ± 1.3%, P > 0.05 vs. EGCG) blocked the anti-infarct effect by EGCG. The infarct reducing effect of EGCG was significantly reversed by 200 nM of the A1 ADR antagonist DPCPX (25.9 ± 1.1%, P < 0.05) and 15 nM of the A2B ADR antagonist MRS1706 (29.3 ± 1.7%, P < 0.01) but not by 10 µM of the A2A ADR antagonist ZM241385 (23.9 ± 1.9%. P > 0.05 vs. EGCG) and 100 nM of the A3 ADR antagonist MRS1334 (24.1 ± 1.8%, P > 0.05).ConclusionsThe infarct reducing effect of EGCG appears to involve activation of ADR, especially A1 and A2B ADR, but not OPR.

BackgroundRecently, the addition of dexmedetomidine to sedation regimens after cardiac surgery had been reported and there is a possibility that dexmedetomidine can cause vasoconstriction. Vasopressin has been used as a prophylactic treatment for refractory vasodilatory shock during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). Also, vasopressin may play an important role in initiating spasms at the graft artery. Here we evaluate the direct effect of dexmedetomidine on isolated human gastroepiploic arteries and the synergistic effect of dexmedetomidine and vasopressin.MethodsDiscarded gastroepiploic arteries from elective subtotal gastrectomy (n = 10) were used in this study. We measured the level of contraction in isolated human gastroepiploic arteries induced by increasing concentrations of dexmedetomidine (10-10 to 10-6 M) with or without vasopressin (10-10, 10-9 M). Arterial contractions caused by increasing concentrations of vasopressin (10-10 to 10-7.5 M) with or without dexmedetomidine (10-9, 10-7 M) were also measured in the tissue samples.ResultsSupraclinical concentrations of dexmedetomidine elicited contractions at concentrations of 10-7 M and 10-6 M (P < 0.05 versus resting tension). The same concentrations of dexmedetomidine (10-7, 10-6 M) significantly enhanced vasopressin-induced contractions (P < 0.05 versus vasopressin-induced contraction). Vasopressin produced concentration-dependent contractions and vasopressin (10-10, 10-9.5, 10-9 M) also increased the intensity of dexmedetomidine (10-7 M) induced contractions.ConclusionsThere was a synergistic effect between supraclinical doses of dexmedetomidine and vasopressin on the degree of contraction in isolated human gastroepiploic arteries. However, a sedative dose of dexmedetomidine (clinical dose: 0.2-0.7 µg/kg/hr, plasma concentration: 0.36-1.25 ng/ml) did not enhance vasopressin induced-contraction in isolated human gastroepiploic arteries.

IntroductionFatty degeneration of the vertebral bodies and paravertebral muscles is associated with the presence, severity, and prognosis of spinal disease such as intervertebral disc degeneration. Therefore, the fat fraction (FF) of the vertebral bodies and paraspinal muscles has been considered a potential biomarker for assessing the pathophysiology, progression, and treatment response of spinal disease. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is considered the reference standard for fat quantification; however, it has limitations of a long acquisition time and is technically demanding. Chemical shift-encoding water-fat imaging, called the Dixon method, has recently been applied for rapid fat quantification with high spatial resolution. However, the Dixon method has not been validated in veterinary medicine, and we hypothesized that the Dixon method would provide a comparable assessment of the FF to MRS but would be faster and easier to implement in dogs.MethodsIn this prospective study, we assessed the FF of the lumbar vertebral bodies and paravertebral muscles from the first to sixth lumbar vertebrae using MRS, the two-point Dixon method (LAVA-FLEX), and the six-point Dixon method (IDEAL-IQ) and compared these techniques.Results and discussionThe FFs of vertebral bodies and paravertebral muscles derived from LAVA-FLEX and IDEAL-IQ showed significant correlations and agreement with those obtained with MRS. In particular, the FFs obtained with IDEAL-IQ showed higher correlations and better agreement with those obtained with MRS than those derived by LAVA-FLEX. Both Dixon methods showed excellent intra- and interobserver reproducibility for FF analysis of the vertebral bodies and paraspinal muscles. However, the test–retest repeatability of vertebral body and paraspinal muscle FF analysis was low for all three sequences, especially for the paraspinal muscles. The results of this study showed that LAVA-FLEX and IDEAL-IQ have high reproducibility and that their findings were highly correlated with the FFs of the lumber vertebral bodies and paraspinal muscles determined by MRS in dogs. The FF analysis could be performed much more easily and quickly using LAVA-FLEX and IDEAL-IQ than using MRS. In conclusion, LAVA-FLEX and IDEAL-IQ can be used as routine procedures in spinal magnetic resonance imaging in dogs for FF analysis of the vertebral bodies and paraspinal muscles.

We report the imaging and pathologic findings of fishbone-associated actinomycosis of the anterior cervical space in a 57-year-old man, misdiagnosed preoperatively as a malignancy originating from thyroglossal duct cyst. CT revealed an enhancing mass containing a small abscess pocket and two sharp linear calcifications within it, which infiltrated into the strap muscle. Pathologic examination demonstrated two fishbones within the actinomycotic abscess. Fishbone-associated actinomycosis should be considered when a cervical mass contains sharp linear calcifications.

Abstract A 10‐year‐old Cocker spaniel presented with lethargy. Triple‐phase computed tomography was obtained with a contrast test bolus at the level of porta hepatis, which revealed a right lower abdominal mass. The mass was not connected to other abdominal organs; however, a linear structure was observed connecting the splenic hilum to the mass, which was suspected to be the feeding vessel. The arterial phase image was obtained again with a contrast bolus at the level of the celiac artery. A prominent contrast‐enhanced feeding artery originating from the splenic artery to the mass was observed. Histopathology confirmed an accessory splenic hemangiosarcoma.

Background: Various salivary gland diseases diagnosed on computed tomography (CT) in dogs have been reported. However, no study described the size and CT attenuation value of normal salivary glands in dogs. Aim: This retrospective analytical study aimed to evaluate the size and attenuation value of the mandibular and zygomatic salivary glands on CT in dogs without cervical or head lesion. Methods: The maximum cross-sectional area (MCSA) were measured in 96 dogs and attenuation value on non-contrast and postcontrast images were measured in 90 dogs. Dogs were divided into three groups based on body weight: group 1, ≤ 5.0 kg; group 2, 5.1–10.0 kg; and group 3, 10.1–15.0 kg. Results: There were significant differences in MCSA for both glands among the three groups. There was no difference in MCSA between the left and right sides in both salivary glands. The MCSA for both salivary glands positively correlated with body weight (P < 0.001). There was a significant difference in MCSA of the zygomatic gland between males and females (P = 0.02), but there was no significant difference in the mandibular gland. There was a significant difference in the attenuation value between the mandibular and zygomatic glands on non-contrast studies (P < 0.001), but there was no significant difference on postcontrast studies. Conclusion: This study established the reference for the size and attenuation value of the mandibular and zygomatic glands in dogs and provided background data for future CT evaluation of dogs with salivary gland diseases. Abstract 2D transition‐metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials are promising candidates with excellent thermoelectric (TE) properties owing to their low dimensionality in electronic and phonon transport. However, the considerable coupling of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity in such TE materials eventually results in the limit of the TE power factor increase, which severely hinders potential TE device applications. Herein, an alternative approach is demonstrated for breaking the strong coupling between the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity in single TE materials by adopting a novel stacked PtSe2/PtSe2 homostructure. By alternately piling low‐resistance (LR) PtSe2 (3 nm) onto high‐resistance (HR) PtSe2 (2 nm) as one unit, the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of such stacked homostructures can be greatly enhanced with slightly improved electrical conductivity, ultimately resulting in a TE power factor in three‐unit‐stacked homostructures that is ≈1,648% higher than that of a single PtSe2 (15 nm) layer with the same thickness. This enhancement is attributed to an independent increase in the Seebeck coefficient, which depends on the interface among the LR and HR PtSe2 layers. The findings pave the way for a method that, unlike power factor optimization in conventional thermoelectric materials, can only utilize the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of each layer in a stacked homostructure.

Novel swine orthopneumovirus (SOV) infections have been identified in pigs in the USA and some European countries but not in Asian countries, including South Korea, to date. The current study reports the first SOV infections in four domestic pig farms located in four provinces across South Korea. The detection rate of SOV in oral fluid samples using qRT-PCR was 4.4% (14/389), indicating the presence of the virus in pigs at commercial farms in Korea. Two complete genome sequences and one glycoprotein (G) gene sequence were obtained from SOV-positive samples. The complete genome analysis of KSOV-2201 and KSOV-2202 strains showed 98.2 and 95.4% homologies with a previously reported SOV, and the phylogenetic tree exhibited a high correlation with a previously reported SOV strain from the US and a canine pneumovirus (CPnV) strain from China. Based on the genetic analysis of the viral G gene, the murine pneumonia virus (MPV)-like orthopneumoviruses (MLOVs) were divided into two genogroups (G1 and G2). Seventeen CPnVs and two feline pneumoviruses were grouped into G1, while the Korean SOV strains identified in this study were grouped into G2 along with one SOV and two CPnVs. These results will contribute to expanding our understanding of the geographical distribution and genetic characteristics of the novel SOV in the global pig population.

Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) elevation during capnoperitoneum can cause adverse cardiovascular and respiratory effects. This study aimed to determine if a sequentially increased IAP affects cardiovascular and respiratory variables in anesthetized dogs and evaluate the effects of the constant-rate infusion of dexmedetomidine (Dex) on cardiovascular and respiratory variables with increased IAP. Five dogs were anesthetized and instrumented, and a Veress needle was equipped to adjust the IAP using a carbon dioxide insufflator. Stabilization was conducted for 1 h, and physiological variables were measured at IAPs of 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mmHg and after desufflation. After the washout period, the dogs underwent similar procedures along with a constant-rate infusion of dexmedetomidine. The cardiovascular effects of increased IAP up to 20 mmHg were not significant in healthy beagle dogs and those administered with dexmedetomidine. When comparing the control and dexmedetomidine groups, the overall significant effects of dexmedetomidine were noted on heart rate, cardiac output, and systemic vascular resistance during the experiment. Respiratory effects were not observed during abdominal insufflation when compared between different IAPs and between the two groups. Overall, an increased IAP of up to 20 mmHg did not significantly affect cardiovascular and respiratory variables in both the control and dexmedetomidine groups. This study suggests that the administration of a dexmedetomidine infusion is applicable in laparoscopic procedures in healthy dogs.

This study presents a unique method of building a surrogate model using a graph convolutional network (GCN) for mesh-based structure-borne noise analysis of a fluid–structure coupled system. Structure-borne noise generated from irregular shape panel vibration and sound pressure was measured in a closed-volume cavity coupled with the panel. The proposed network was trained to predict the sound pressure level with three steps. The first step is predicting the natural frequency of panels and cavities using the graph convolutional network, the second step is to predict the averaged vibration and acoustic response of the panel and cavity, respectively, in a given excitation condition using a triangular wave-type inference function based on the natural frequency predicted from the first step, and the third step is to predict the sound pressure in a cavity using a panel and cavity average response as an input to a 2D convolutional neural network (CNN). This method is an efficient way to build a surrogate model for predicting the response of a system which consisted of several sub-systems, like a full vehicle system model. We predicted the response of each sub-system and then combined this to obtain the response of the whole system. Using this method, an average 0.86 r-square value was achieved to predict the panel-induced structure-borne noise in a cavity from 10 to 500 Hz range in 1/12 octave band. This study is the first step towards creating a surrogate model of an engineering system with various sub-systems by changing it into a heterogeneous graph.

The present study was performed to survey the dominant tick populations and molecularly determine the pathogenic agents of anaplasmosis in ticks from Gyeongsang, Republic of Korea. A total of 3825 questing ticks were collected by the flagging method from 12 sites near animal farms in Gyeongsang from March to October 2021. A molecular genomic study was performed with ticks stored in 70% ethanol to detect Anaplasma genes by the previously described method. The monthly incidence of ticks varied by developmental stages, i.e., nymphs, adults, and larvae, and each of their populations peaked in May, March, and October, respectively. The predominant tick species were Haemaphysalis longicornis, Haemaphysalis sp., Haemaphysalis flava, Ixodes nipponensis, and Amblyomma testudinarium in order. To determine the Anaplasma infection rate, collected ticks were pooled into 395 groups. The minimum infection rate (MIR) of Anaplasma was 0.7% (27 pools). That of A. phagocytophilum was highest (23 pools, MIR 0.6%), followed by A. phagocytophilum-like Anaplasma spp. clade B (2 pools, MIR 0.1%), A. bovis (1 pool, MIR 0.1%), and A. capra (1 pool, MIR 0.1%), respectively. In this study, five species of ticks, including unidentified Haemaphysalis species, were collected in 12 survey sites in Gyeongsang, but their prevalence was somewhat different according to the tick species and survey sites. Further, the incidence rate (6.8%) of 4 Anaplasma spp. was not as high in tick pools. However, the results of this study may offer a basis for future epidemiological research and risk assessment of tick-borne diseases.

A 13-year-old, Maltese dog presented with syncope and lethargy. Abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated anechoic peritoneal effusion and hepatic congestion. A focal echogenic round mass compressing the right ventricle and atrium was observed on echocardiography. Cardiac tamponade and right ventricular outflow tract obstruction occurred. On computed tomography, a homogeneous soft-tissue structure compressing the right chamber without contrast enhancement, suspected to be loculated pericardial effusion. During pericardiocentesis, cardiac tamponade was resolved, and irregular pericardial thickening was noted. Pericardial effusion was exudate and gram-positive bacterial colonies were observed on cytology. A diagnosis of fibrinous pericarditis secondary to bacterial infection was established. A 6-month-old Ragdoll and 9-year-old Russian Blue cat presented with vomiting. Ultrasonography and computed tomography showed a pyloric antrum mass with wall layering loss and regional lymphadenopathy in the Ragdoll kitten. The Russian Blue cat only presented with muscularis layer thickening throughout the jejunum; however, despite medications, it later progressed to a mass with wall layering loss on the serial ultrasound. Both cats underwent surgery, and feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia (FGESF) was histologically confirmed. FGESF should be considered for gastrointestinal masses demonstrating wall layering loss and lymphadenopathy, even in kittens, and intestinal muscularis layer thickening that is refractory to medications. A 14-year-old, spayed female, poodle was presented with dysuria and hematuria. A mass that appeared hypoechoic on ultrasound and hypoattenuating on computed tomography (CT) extended from the bladder neck to the urethra. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed the mass invading the muscular layer of the bladder, urethra, and prostate with distinct margins. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) was confirmed with the CADET-BRAF test. This study describes the CT and MRI features of suspected TCC lesions involving the bladder, prostate, and urethra. MRI showed superior soft tissue contrast resolution, enabling evaluation of invasion of the muscular layer of the bladder and urethra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
