Anti-angiogenesis therapy, a promising remedy against tumor progression, is now widely used to treat numerous types of cancer. Since vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the most vital factor in angiogenesis, most anti-angiogenesis drugs target the VEGF-related pathway. However, in glioblastoma (GBM), the therapeutic strategy involving the inhibition of VEGF signaling is ineffective. The present study demonstrated that the potential angiogenic function of endothelin-1 (EDN1) was upregulated by inhibitor of differentiation 1 (ID1) independent of VEGF during tumor angiogenesis. Anatomic structure transcriptomes of patients with GBM revealed that the expression levels of ID1 and EDN1 were specifically upregulated in the vascular-related region. The aortic ring assay and endothelial sprouting assay demonstrated that EDN1 more potently promoted endothelial sprouting ability than VEGF. The activity of EDN1 was induced by endothelin receptor, which seemed to mediate regulation via positive feedback. Finally, in patients with GBM who did not respond to bevacizumab, a VEGF antagonist, EDN1 expression was higher than that in bevacizumab responders. Collectively, the present study demonstrated that EDN1 is a potent angiogenic factor inducing endothelial sprouting and may be a novel target for inhibiting glioma angiogenesis.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is more difficult to treat than other intractable adult tumors. Here, we describe the composition and function of migrasomes generated along with GBM cell migration. Proteomic analysis revealed that LC3B-positive autophagosomes were abundant in the migrasomes of GBM cells. An increased number of migrasomes was observed following treatment with chloroquine (CQ) or inhibition of the expression of STX17 and SNAP29, which are involved in autophagosome/lysosome fusion. Although ATG7 ablation, which is involved in LC3B lipidation, did not suppress migrasome formation, it was confirmed that migrasome formation could be diminished by blocking the alternative autophagy pathway through double knockout of ATG7/BECN1. Furthermore, depletion of ITGA5 or TSPAN4 did not relieve endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in cells, resulting in cell death. Taken together, our study suggests that increasing the number of autophagosomes, through inhibition of autophagosome/lysosome fusion, generates migrasomes that have the capacity to alleviate cellular stress.Summary statementThis study demonstrates that glioblastoma cells contain autophagosomes within their migrasomes. Under stress conditions, the formation of migrasomes serves as a stress-relief mechanism to alleviate cell death.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive and malignant brain tumor, resulting in a poor prognosis. The current therapy for GBM consists in concurrent radiation and chemotherapy following removal of the tumor. Although the therapy prolongs patient survival, recurrence often occurs. The major cause of tumor recurrence is thought to be GBM stem cells (GSCs), which aid the development of chemo-radiotherapy resistance, and can self-renew and aberrantly differentiate. Therefore, GSCs should be targeted to eradicate the tumor and prevent recurrence. Transcriptomic analysis has categorized GBM into proneural (PN), mesenchymal and classical subtypes, and the outcome of recurrence and prognosis markedly depends on subtype. To identify specific GSC markers, the present study analyzed public microarray and RNA-seq data and identified dihydropyrimidinase-related protein 5 (DRP5) as a candidate GSC marker. DRP5 is known to mediate semaphorin 3A signaling and is involved in the regulation of neurite outgrowth and axon guidance during neuronal development. In the present study, DRP5 was specifically upregulated in the PN-subtype GSCs and served crucial roles in maintaining GSC properties, including tumor sphere formation, stem cell marker expression and xenograft tumor growth. Furthermore, bioinformatics analysis revealed that DRP5 expression was positively correlated with signatures of stemness, including Notch, Hedgehog and Wnt/β-catenin expression, which are also known to be positively correlated with PN-subtype gene signatures. Conversely, DRP5 expression was negatively correlated with NF-κB and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 stemness signatures, which are negatively correlated with PN-subtype gene signatures. Taken together, these findings suggested that DRP5 was specifically expressed in PN-subtype GSCs and may be used as a functional marker of PN-subtype GSCs.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC), is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disease of the digestive tract and increases the risk of colon cancer.This study evaluates the effects of dietary intervention with freeze-dried plum (FDP), a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory fruit with no toxicity on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute and chronic experimental colitis in a mouse model and studies the molecular mechanisms of protection through the gut-liver axis. The results show that FDP decreases the levels of inflammatory mediators, which is a nitrative stress biomarker in both acute and chronic models. FDP markedly reduces DSS-induced injury to the colonic epithelium in both acute and chronic models. In addition, FDP significantly decreases the levels of pro-oxidant markers such as CYP2E1, iNOS, and nitrated proteins (detected by anti-3-NT antibody) in DSS-induced acute and chronic colonic injury models. Furthermore, FDP markedly reduces markers of liver injury such as serum ALT/AST, antioxidant markers, and inflammatory mediators in DSS-induced acute and chronic colonic injury.These results demonstrate that the FDP exhibits a protective effect on DSS-induced acute and chronic colonic and liver injury through the gut-liver axis via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Jagged1 (JAG1) is a Notch ligand that contact-dependently activates Notch receptors and regulates cancer progression. The JAG1 intracellular domain (JICD1) is generated from JAG1, like formation of the NOTCH1 intracellular domain (NICD1); however, the role of JICD1 in tumorigenicity has not been comprehensively elucidated. Here we show that JICD1 induces astrocytes to acquire several cancer stem cell properties, including tumor formation, invasiveness, stemness, and resistance to anticancer therapy. The transcriptome, chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq), and proteomics analyses show that JICD1 increases SOX2 expression by forming a transcriptional complex with DDX17, SMAD3, and TGIF2. JICD1-driven tumorigenicity is directly regulated by SOX2. Our results demonstrate that, like NICD1, JICD1 acts as a transcriptional cofactor in formation of the DDX17/SMAD3/TGIF2 transcriptional complex, leading to oncogenic transformation.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a refractory disease that has a highly infiltrative characteristic. Over the past decade, GBM perivascular niche (PVN) has been described as a route of dissemination. Here, we investigated that trailed membrane structures, namely retraction fibers (RFs), are formed by perivascular extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. By using the anatomical GBM database, we validated that the ECM-related genes were highly expressed in the cells within the PVN where fibronectin (FN) induced RF formation. By disrupting candidates of FN-binding integrins, integrin α5β1 was identified as the main regulator of RF formation. De novo RFs were produced at the trailing edge, and focal adhesions were actively localized in RFs, indicating that adhesive force makes RFs remain at the bottom surface. Furthermore, we observed that GBM cells more frequently migrated along the residual RFs formed by preceding cells in microfluidic channels in comparison to those in the channels without RFs, suggesting that the infiltrative characteristics GBM could be attributed to RFs formed by the preceding cells in concert with chemoattractant cues. Altogether, we demonstrated that shedding membrane structures of GBM cells are maintained by FN-integrin α5β1 interaction and promoted their motility .

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is used for medicinal purposes owing to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. We evaluated the protective effect of nanovesicles isolated from hemp plant parts (root, seed, hemp sprout, and leaf) in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. The particle sizes of root-derived nanovesicles (RNVs), seed-derived nanovesicles (SNVs), hemp sprout-derived nanovesicles (HSNVs), and leaf-derived nanovesicles (LNVs) were within the range of 100–200 nm as measured by nanoparticle tracking analysis. Acute colitis was induced in C57BL/N mice by 5% DSS in water provided for 7 days. RNVs were administered orally once a day, leading to the recovery of both the small intestine and colon lengths. RNVs, SNVs, and HSNVs restored the tight (ZO-1, claudin-4, occludin) and adherent junctions (E-cadherin and α-tubulin) in DSS-induced small intestine and colon injury. Additionally, RNVs markedly reduced NF-κB activation and oxidative stress proteins in DSS-induced small intestine and colon injury. Tight junction protein expression and epithelial cell permeability were elevated in RNV-, SNV-, and HSNV-treated T84 colon cells exposed to 2% DSS. Interestedly, RNVs, SNVs, HSNVs, and LNVs reduced ALT activity and liver regeneration marker proteins in DSS-induced liver injury. These results showed for the first time that hemp-derived nanovesicles (HNVs) exhibited a protective effect on DSS-induced gut leaky and liver injury through the gut–liver axis by inhibiting oxidative stress marker proteins.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Korean Red ginseng extract (RG) is one of the most widely used traditional health functional food in Asia, which invigorates immunity and vital energy. RG have been suggested to inhibit proliferation, invasion, and inflammation in several cancer cell lines. Correspondingly, clinical studies have raised the possibility that RG could augment therapeutic efficacy in cancer patients. However, little is known about the anti-cancer effects of RG in glioblastoma (GBM), the most common and aggressive brain tumor for which effective therapeutic regimens need to be developed. Aim of this study: Here, we assessed the in vivo and in vitro anti-cancer properties of RG in a patient-derived xenograft mouse model and GBM stem cell (GSC) line. Materials and methods We evaluated the anti-cancer effects of RG in patient-derived GBM xenograft mice with and without combined concurrent chemo- and radiation therapy (CCRT). Furthermore, we verified the in vitro effects of RG on the proliferation, cell death, and stem cell-like self-renewal capacity of cancer cells. Finally, we investigated the signaling pathway affected by RG, via which its anti-cancer effects were mediated. Results When combined with CCRT, RG impeded GBM progression by reducing cancer cell proliferation and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (IBA1)-positive immune cell recruitment. The anti-cancer effects of RG were mediated by Rg3 and Rh2 ginsenosides. Rg3 promoted cell death while Rh2 did not. Furthermore, both Rg3 and Rh2 reduced cell viability and self-renewal capacity of GSCs by inhibiting Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Conclusion Therefore, our observations imply that RG could be applied to the GBM patients in parallel with CCRT to enhance therapeutic efficacy.

OCT4, also known as POU5F1 (POU domain class 5 transcription factor 1), is a transcription factor that acts as a master regulator of pluripotency in embryonic stem cells and is one of the reprogramming factors required for generating induced pluripotent stem cells. The human OCT4 encodes three isoforms, OCT4A, OCT4B, and OCT4B1, which are generated by alternative splicing. Currently, the functions and expression patterns of OCT4B remain largely unknown in malignancies, especially in human glioblastomas. Here, we demonstrated the function of OCT4B in human glioblastomas. Among the isoform of OCT4B, OCT4B-190 (OCT4B19kDa) was highly expressed in human glioblastoma stem cells and glioblastoma cells and was mainly detected in the cytoplasm rather than the nucleus. Overexpression of OCT4B19kDa promoted colony formation of glioblastoma cells when grown in soft agar culture conditions. Clinical data analysis revealed that patients with gliomas that expressed OCT4B at high levels had a poorer prognosis than patients with gliomas that expressed OCT4B at low levels. Thus, OCT4B19kDa may play a crucial role in regulating cancer cell survival and adaption in a rigid environment.

Caliber persistent artery (CPA) is a vascular anomaly presenting as a bluish and pulsatile artery in the subepithelial tissue. Although the incidence of CPA was debated, many CPAs occurred in the perioral and facial tissues at which the embryonal strapedial artery networks were distributed. The present study demonstrated a case of CPA occurred in the retromolar buccal mucosa in a 37 years old male. The lesion showed many pinkish granular spots, but was asymptomatic except biting irritation during mastication. It had slowly increased in size up to 20 × 25 mm for 3 years, and recently became hemorrhagic due to the biting injury between left upper and lower second molars. With the fear of oral cancer an incisional biopsy was performed, and followed by histological and immunohistochemical study. Histologically the lesion showed many tortuous artery localized at the submucosa area, and the arterial wall was thick and its lumen was narrowed and shrunken. In the immunochemistry α-SMA was positive for thick smooth muscle layer of artery and arterioles, TGase 2 was weakly positive for the luminal surface of arterial intima, and bFGF was consistently positive for the perivascular fibrous tissue. But PCNA, VEGF, CD31, CMG2, TGF-β1, HSP-70, and 14-3-3 were almost negative for the vascular tissue. Therefore, it was presumed that the lesion was not actively proliferative nor degenerative but still retained its cellular stability and slow growing potential. It was finally diagnosed as CPA differentially from arterio-venous malformation, hemangioma, lymphangioma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The retromolar buccal mucosa CPA is first reported in this study and may present usual clinical findings depending on its size and location. This asymptomatic lesion could be severely hemorrhagic by minor biting injury, therefore, precise differential diagnosis should be made through biopsy, and careful therapy be followed.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the most aggressive and lethal human brain tumors, and the median survival of patients with GBM is only 14 months. Glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) are regarded as a main cause of GBM recurrence, because of their self-renewal and drug resistance properties. Therefore, targeting GSCs is an important therapeutic strategy for GBM. In this study, we show the effects of BRM270, a compound from natural plant extracts, on GSCs in vitro and GBM recurrence in vivo. BRM270 induced apoptotic cell death and inhibited cell growth and “stemness” both in vitro and in vivo. Combining BRM270 treatment with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) dramatically increased mice survival and tumor growth inhibition. Taken together, our results suggested that BRM270 synergizes with CCRT as a therapeutic agent to target GSCs.

Most cancer-related signaling pathways sustain their active or inactive status via genetic mutations or various regulatory mechanisms. Previously, we demonstrated that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) activates Notch signaling through nitric oxide (NO)-signaling-driven activation of inhibitor of differentiation 4 (ID4) in glioblastoma (GBM) stem cells (GSCs) and endothelial cells in the vascular niche of GBM, leading to maintenance of GSC traits and GBM progression. Here, we determined that the PDGF-NO-ID4-signaling axis is constantly activated through a positive regulatory circuit. ID4 expression significantly increased PDGF subunit B expression in both in vitro cultures and in vivo tumor xenografts and regulated NO synthase 2 (NOS2) expression and NO production by activating PDGF signaling, as well as that of its receptor (PDGFR). Additionally, ectopic expression of PDGFRα, NOS2, or ID4 activated the PDGF-NO-ID4-signaling circuit and enhanced the self-renewal of GBM cell lines. These results suggested that the positive regulatory circuit associated with PDGF-NO-ID4 signaling plays a pivotal role in regulating the self-renewal and tumor-initiating capacity of GSCs and might provide a promising therapeutic target for GBM.

Exposure to microgravity is supposed to affect almost all biological systems, and we speculated that microgravity is potentially involved in autophagy regulation. A clinostat was used to simulate microgravity, and HEK293 cells that stably express GFP-LC3 were used for sensitive monitoring of autophagy induction. The clinorotation of GFP-LC3 cells resulted in autophagosome formation in the cytoplasm and a change in autophagosomal marker expression. Autophagy induction was accompanied by phosphorylation of AMPK (Thr 172) and by the dephosphorylation of mammalian target of rapamycin. To elucidate the role of AMPK in microgravity-induced autophagy, we suppressed AMPK expression by knockdown via siRNA, which inhibited the induction of autophagy upon exposure to microgravity. In addition, the clinorotation of C2C12 myotube cells resulted in the enlarged and distinctive LC3 spots in the cytoplasm and AMPK activation. These results indicate that simulated microgravity possibly contributes to autophagy induction by regulating AMPK.

Atmospheric air-plasma treatment of indium–tin–oxide (ITO) surfaces has been investigated as an alternative to a conventional oxygen (O2) vacuum plasma process. For this study, we devised an atmospheric air barrier plasma system having a dimension of 1000×600mm2 and successfully verified a possibility to ignite and maintain an atmospheric pressure discharge only in the ambient air. In particular, we used the steady-state airflow to generate more atomic oxygen radicals as oxygen gas during the vacuum plasma process and to prevent redeposition of the removed or transformed impurities onto the indium–tin–oxide substrate. The x-ray photoemission spectroscopy examination indicated that the adoption of the atmospheric-air plasma treatment reduced the surface content of carbon from 22.1% down to 8.5% and increased that of oxygen from 43% up to 57%. The influence of CF4 plasma treatment of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and polyimide (PI) on the patterning of ink-jet printed polymer is presented. Not much difference between the as-received ITO and PI surface energies was found, but a significant difference in surface energies between ITO and PI after CF4 plasma treatment was noted. It is expected that precise patterning can be achieved by using the difference in surface energies between the inside of the pixel and its surroundings. Also the effects of CF4 plasma treatment of ITO have been studied on the performance of polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that CF4 plasma treatment led to a decrease in the surface content of carbon contaminants and an increase in the surface content of fluorine, which in turn enhance the performance of PLEDs.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer was deposited by the Cs+ ion sputtered negative ion deposition technique between hole transport layer and indium tin oxide (ITO) anode for polymeric electroluminescent device. An acidic poly(styrene sulfonate)-doped poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly-(styrenesulphonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) solution acting as a hole transporting material etches the ITO surface and the PEDOT:PSS/ITO interface is not stable. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry have been used to measure the indium contamination in the organic layers such as PEDOT:PSS and poly[2-methoxy-5-( 2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene]. From the result, it was found that the DLC buffer layer protects ITO surface from acidic PEDOT:PSS solution and restrains the indium diffusion into organic layer. The device with the DLC layer also has electroluminescent efficiency by almost 2 times in the polymeric electroluminescent device compared with the device without diamond-like carbon layer.

The tin oxide and silicon oxide films have been deposited on polycarbonate substrates as gas barrier films, using a thermal evaporation and ion beam assisted deposition process. The oxide films deposited by ion beam assisted deposition show a much lower water vapor transmission rate than those by thermal evaporation. The tin oxide films show a similar water vapor transmission rate to the silicon oxide films in thermal evaporation but a lower water vapor transmission rate in IBAD. These results are related to the fact that the permeation of water vapor with a large dipole moment is affected by the chemistry of oxides and the packing density of the oxide films. The permeation mechanism of water vapor through the oxide films is discussed in terms of the chemical interaction with water vapor and the microstructure of the oxide films. The chemical interaction of water vapor with oxide films has been investigated by the refractive index from ellipsometry and the OH group peak from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the microstructure of the composite oxide films was characterized using atomic force microscopy and a transmission electron microscope. The activation energy for water vapor permeation through the oxide films has also been measured in relation to the permeation mechanism of water vapor. The diffusivity of water vapor for the tin oxide films has been calculated from the time lag plot, and its implications are discussed.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with aluminum cathodes prepared by the ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) have a longer lifetime than thermally evaporated one. The electroluminescent features were examined to compare the rate of degradation in the devices with thermally evaporated Al cathodes and ion-beam-assisted Al cathodes. The dense and highly packed Al cathode effectively prevents the permeation of H 2 O and O 2 through pinhole defects, which results in retarding dark spot growth. Employing thin Al buffer layer diminished Ar + ion-induced damages in phenyl-substituted poly- p -phenylene-vinylene (Ph-PPVs) and limited permeation against H 2 O and O 2 . The interface between Al and Ph-PPV may be modified in IBAD case, even though buffered Al layer was deposited to 30 nm by thermal evaporation prior to Ar + ion beam irradiation. It is believed that the buffered Al film cannot screen the Ar + ions or Al atoms wholly due to the existence of pinholes or non-deposited regions among the columnar structures.

We have fabricated highly stable organic electroluminescent devices based on spin-coated poly- p -phenylene-vynylene (PPV) thin films. The electrical properties of aluminum cathode, prepared by ion beam assisted deposition, on PPV have been investigated and compared to those by thermal evaporation. Although energetic particles of Al assisted by Ar + ion may damage the organic material, I – V – L characteristics are improved by applying thin Al buffer layer. In addition, a dense Al cathode inhibits the permeation of H 2 O and O 2 into PPV film through pinhole defects, and thus retards dark spot growth. It may be deduced from highly packed structure of Al cathode with smaller junction resistance between Al and PPV. In conclusion, the lifetime of organic light-emitting device (OLED) has been extended effectively by dense Al film through ion beam assisted deposition process.

Ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) was used for cathode preparation in organic light-emitting diodes to fabricate dense electrode. Dark spot growth rate was decreased by employing the IBAD process due to a highly packed aluminum structure inhibiting the permeation of H2O and O2. However, undesirable leakage current was generated because energetic particles of Al assisted by Ar+ ion may damage the organic material resulting in reduction of contact resistance. The decrease of contact resistance in the IBAD device may be caused by large contact area, increase of density of states, and Li diffusion to phenyl-substituted poly-p-phenylene vinylene.

CeO2–SiO2 composite thin films were prepared by e-beam evaporation and ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) using an End-Hall ion source. The refractive index of composite thin films exhibited a maximum value at 20–35% SiO2 fraction, indicating the highest packing density. Optical analysis revealed that the transmittance and reflectance spectra of composite films were consistent with the results of the refractive index. The results from X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements showed that composite thin films containing 20–35% SiO2 concentration had a dense and smooth amorphous surface, compared to the roughened granular structure of the pure SiO2 and CeO2 thin films.

Composite thin films consisting of silicon oxide and tin oxide have been deposited on polycarbonate substrates as gas barrier films, using a thermal evaporation process in an oxygen gas environment. Water vapor permeation through the composite films is significantly affected by the chemical interaction of water vapor with the composite oxide films and the microstructure of the composite oxide films. The chemical interaction of water vapor with oxide films has been investigated by the considering the refractive index obtained from ellipsometry and the OH group peak from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the microstructure of the composite oxide films has been characterized using atomic force microscopy. As the tin oxide is added to the silicon oxide, the refractive index and OH group peak intensity of the composite films increase, and the water vapor transmission rate through the composite oxide films shows a lower value than that through the single-element oxide films, such as tin oxide and silicon ox...

CeO2–SiO2 composite thin films were prepared by e-beam evaporation and ion beam assisted deposition using an End-Hall ion source. The refractive index of composite thin films exhibited a maximum value at 20%–35%SiO2 fraction, indicating the high packing density. Optical analysis revealed that the transmittance and reflectance spectra of composite films were consistent with the results of the refractive index. The results from x-ray diffractometry, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy measurements showed that composite thin films containing 20%–35%SiO2 concentration had a dense and smooth amorphous surface, compared to the roughened granular structure of the pure SiO2 and CeO2 thin films. The composite thin films with 20%–35%SiO2 concentration exhibited a higher resistance to water absorption than the CeO2 thin films in spite of the highest refractive index.

Highly stable organic electroluminescent devices based on spin-coated soluble phenyl-substituted poly- p -phenylene-vinylene (Ph-PPVs) thin films have been achieved. We investigated the electrical properties of ion beam assisted aluminum cathode contacting Ph-PPV and compared them to those of thermal evaporation. Although energetic particles of Al assisted by Ar + ion generate the damages in organic materials, I–V–L characteristics can be improved by using thin Al buffer layer to avoid damages. In addition, dense Al cathode inhibits the permeation of H 2 O and O 2 through pinhole defects, which results in retarding gas bubble formation. This may be explained by highly packed structure of Al cathode and decrease of the contact resistance between Al and Ph-PPV. It is believed that the larger contact area and increase of density of state in Ph-PPV minimize the contact resistance and that results in the longevity of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs).

Microcavites contribute to enhancing the optical efficiency and color saturation of an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display. A major tradeoff of the strong cavity effect is its apparent color shift, especially for RGB-based OLED displays, due to their mismatched angular intensity distributions. To mitigate the color shift, in this work we first analyze the emission spectrum shifts and angular distributions for the OLEDs with strong and weak cavities, both theoretically and experimentally. Excellent agreement between simulation and measurement is obtained. Next, we propose a systematic approach for RGB-OLED displays based on multi-objective optimization algorithms. Three objectives, namely external quantum efficiency (EQE), color gamut coverage, and angular color shift of primary and mixed colors, can be optimized simultaneously. Our optimization algorithm is proven to be effective for suppressing color shift while keeping a relatively high optical efficiency and wide color gamut.

We have fabricated highly stable organic electroluminescent devices based on spin-coated soluble phenyl-substituted poly-p-phenylene-vinylene (Ph-PPVs) thin films. The electrical properties of aluminum cathode, prepared by ion-beam-assisted deposition, on Ph-PPV have been investigated and compared to those prepared by thermal evaporation. Although energetic particles of Al assisted by Ar+ ion may damage the organic material, I–V–L characteristics are improved by evaporating a thin Al buffer layer prior to ion-beam-assisted deposition. In addition, a dense Al cathode inhibits the permeation of H2O and O2 into Ph-PPV film by suppressing pinhole defects, and thus retards dark spot growth. This may be deduced from highly packed structure of Al cathode with smaller contact resistance between Al and Ph-PPV. The lifetime of an organic light-emitting device has been extended by dense Al film through an ion-beam-assisted deposition process.

We introduce a new and facile process, corona discharge coating (CDC), to fabricate thin polymer films of the immiscible poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends. The method is based on utilizing directional electric flow, known as electric wind, of the charged unipolar particles generated by corona discharge between a metallic needle and a bottom plate under high electric field (5-10 kV/cm). The electric flow rapidly spreads out the polymer solution on the bottom plate and subsequently forms a smooth and flat thin film over a large area within a few seconds. The method is found to be effective for fabricating uniform thin polymer films with areas larger than approximately 30 mm2. The thin films obtained by CDC exhibit unique microstructures where well-defined spherical and cylindrical domains of approximately 50 nm in diameter coexist. These nanosized domains are found to be much smaller than those in films made by conventional spin coating, which suggests that CDC is beneficial for fabricating phase-separated thin film structures with significantly increased interfacial areas. The effects of the applied voltage, tip-to-plate distance, and substrates on the film formation as well as the resulting microstructure are investigated. Furthermore, the light emitting performance of a device prepared by CDC is compared with one made by spin coating.

We present photonics technology based on a bulk-Si substrate for cost-sensitive dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) optical interface application. We summarize the progress on passive and active photonic devices using a local-crystallized Si waveguide fabricated by solid phase epitaxy or laser-induced epitaxial growth on bulk-Si substrate. The process of integration of a photonic integrated circuit (IC) with an electronic IC is demonstrated using a 65 nm DRAM periphery process on 300 mm wafers to prove the possibility of seamless integration with various complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor devices. Using the bulk-Si photonic devices, we show the feasibility of high-speed multidrop interface: the Mach–Zehnder interferometer modulators and commercial photodetectors are used to demonstrate four-drop link operation at 10 Gb/s, and the transceiver chips with photonic die and electronic die work for the DDR3 DRAM interface at 1.6 Gb/s under a 1∶4 multidrop configuration.
