Abstract

Although cystic fibrosis (CF) is a monogenic disease, its clinical manifestations are influenced in a complex manner. Severity of lung disease, the main cause of mortality among CF patients, is likely modulated by several genes. The mannose-binding lectin 2 (MBL2) gene encodes an innate immune response protein and has been implicated as a pulmonary modifier in CF. However, reports have been conflicting, and interactions with other modifiers have not been investigated. We therefore evaluated the association of MBL2 with CF pulmonary phenotype in a cohort of 1,019 Canadian pediatric CF patients. MBL2 genotypes were combined into low-, intermediate-, and high-expression groups based on MBL2 levels in plasma. Analysis of age at first infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa demonstrated that MBL2 deficiency was significantly associated with earlier onset of infection. This MBL2 effect was amplified in patients with high-producing genotypes of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFB1). Similarly, MBL2 deficiency was associated with more rapid decline of pulmonary function, most significantly in those carrying the high-producing TGFB1 genotype. 18. Modified Path Analysis of a Skills-Based Instructional Effectiveness Model for Beginning Teachers in Instrumental Music Education.

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to seek quantitative support for a theoretical model of instructional effectiveness for beginning teachers in instrumental music education. Instructional effectiveness is based on the degree to which a teacher is able to effect changes in pupils' musical behaviors. Three observable teaching skills were incorporated in the model: (1) modeling skills, i.e., a teacher's ability to demonstrate fundamental elements of music performance, (2) discrimination skills, i.e., a teacher's ability to detect performance discrepancies aurally and visually, and (3) diagnostic skills, i.e., a teacher's ability to analyze and correct performance discrepancies. Secondary objectives of the study were to determine (1) which of the skills, singly or in combination, directly or indirectly accounted for the greatest variance in instructional effectiveness, (2) the applicability of a path model to the theoretical model on the basis of the data, and (3) the applicability of the technique of path analysis to research on instructional effectiveness in instrumental music education. A replication of the study was reported in order to increase the generalizability of the results since r and om selection of subjects was not practical. Subjects were selected from two classes, each from consecutive semesters of an experience-based instrumental music education methods course at The University of Michigan. Subjects were administered a series of measures to determine their modeling, discrimination, and diagnostic skill levels. Evaluation of instructional effectiveness was based on ratings of video-taped teaching by a panel of judges employing an observational measure developed for the study. The data from the tests and the observational measure were subjected to a modification of the technique of path analysis. Results of the study indicated that (1) there is evidence of support for the theoretical model, (2) all three of the skills depicted by the path models contribute to variance in instructional effectiveness, (3) modeling skill is the greatest single contributor to variance in instructional effectiveness, and (4) the concept of path analysis is a viable tool for evaluating relationships among variables in research on instructional effectiveness in instrumental music education.
