The (4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenyl)-bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl amino radical was prepared from a solution of ammonia gas and tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)carbenium hexachloroantimoniate in CH2Cl2. Electron spin resonance revealed a small spin-orbit coupling. Electrochemical measurements indicated the compound undergoes condensation reactions without impairing its radical character.

Background. Sindbis virus (SINV) is an arthropod-borne alphavirus that causes rash and arthritis. In Finland, epidemics occur cyclically, but factors associated with clinical SINV infection are largely unknown. We conducted a population-based case-control study during the epidemic year 2002. Methods. SINV cases were serologically confirmed and reported to the National Infectious Disease Registry. Five control subjects, matched for age, sex, and residence, were selected from the National Population Information System. Data were collected using a self-administered mail survey. Conditional logistic regression models were used to identify independent risk factors; missing data were addressed using Bayesian full-likelihood modeling. Results. A total of 337 case patients (58% female; age range, 1-94 y) and 934 control subjects were enrolled. Reported exposure to mosquito bites (matched odds ratio [mOR], 16.7; 95% confidence interval [CI], 9.1-33.4) and spending time in woods or marshland (mOR, 1.8; 95% CI, 1.3-2.5) were independently associated with SINV infection in the multivariable model. The population-attributable risk for mosquito bites was 87.2%. There were dose-response relations for increased number of insect bites (mOR, 23.8-72.5) and increased time spent in woods or marshland (mOR, 1.3-2.2). Conclusions. Educating the public in endemic areas to avoid mosquito exposure and use protective measures remain important prevention measures for SINV infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm rarely located in the oral cavity. To characterize further oral SFT, we describe three new cases. Each tumour originated in the buccal mucosa of a middle-aged/elderly patient. Histological examination showed well-circumscribed tumours with densely cellular areas alternating with hypocellular areas in a variedly collagenous, vascular stroma. Mast cells were abundant. The spindle-shaped, neoplastic cells immunostained strongly for CD34 antigen and vimentin and weakly for bcl-2, but not for epithelial cell markers, alpha-smooth muscle actin, or neurofilament or S-100 proteins. Compatible with the virtual absence of mitoses and of marked nuclear atypia, the overall frequency of proliferating cells expressing Ki-67 was low. The expression of CD34 was useful in the differential diagnosis. The consistent location in the cheek and expansion of one tumour after local trauma does not preclude a traumatic element in the development of oral SFT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Local lymphoplasmacytoid infiltration of the diseased exocrine glands is a cardinal sign of Sjögren's syndrome (SS). The state of T lymphocyte activation present in these local infiltrations was studied by three different techniques: determination of interleukin 2 (IL2) receptor (Tac) on cell surface membrane; autoradiography combined with immunoperoxidase staining of T cell epitopes; and electron microscopic analysis of the lymphoblast subclasses. Although 64 (SEM 4)% of the local inflammatory cells expressed Ia antigen, only 4 (SEM 1)% of them displayed the T cell activation antigen Tac. Autoradiography-immunoperoxidase double labelling showed that less than 1% of all T cells in situ were [3H]thymidine incorporating blasts. This finding suggests that although T lymphocyte is the dominant cell in situ, only a few of these cells have passed the G0/G1 interphase, and even fewer have been pushed to the S phase of the cell cycle by IL2. Transmission electron microscopy showed that few T blasts were present, even though there were many plasma cells. This result further confirms the impression that only a minor T cell subpopulation in situ is blast transformed despite the fact that many of the local T lymphocytes in the diseased salivary glands in SS are Ia positive. The topographical distribution and relation to mast cells of PGP 9.5 (protein gene product 9.5. a major cytoplasmic neuron-specific protein with ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase activity) and neurolilament (intermediate neuron-specific cytoskeletal filaments) in normal human buccal mucosa was studied in five healthy volunteers. Morphometric analysis disclosed the densest innervation to be in the middle layers of the lamina propria, with a mean number of 5.9-6.1 PGP 9.5 and/or neurofilament-immunoreactive nerve fiber profiles per one mm[sup2]. In contrast, the mean mast cell number decreased from 110/mm[sup2] to 46/mm[sup2] from superficial to deep lamina propria. being 69-72/mm[sup2] in the most densely innervated middle layers. Only 16-17% of all fiber profiles contained substance P and 51-54% calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Finally, analysis of the spatial relationship between nerve fiber profiles and mast cells in a double staining procedure disclosed no preferential neuron-effector associations. All these findings suggest that such a relationship does not exist between peripheral nerves and mast cells in normal buccal mucosa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses research which was done on Finnish ice hockey players to determine the extent to which facial injuries occurred during play. The research also included dental injuries. Researchers found that face and dental injuries accounted for 11.5% of ice hockey injuries and 38% of the total cost for treatment for all ice hockey injuries. The main cause for these injuries was found to be a blow to the face by a hockey stick.
