Abstract

The temperature predicted by photoionization models for the Narrow Line Region of Seyfert 2 galaxies is lower than the value inferred from the observed [O III] {\lambda}4363A/{\lambda}5007A line ratio. We explore the possibility of considering a harder ionizing continuum than typically assumed. 3. ¡Apoyo! Exploring How Support Shapes the Latinx Experience around College and Career Readiness in an Urban High School: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract

The focus of this phenomenological study explored how school and family supports shape the Latinx experience around college and career readiness in an urban high school. This study explored how Latinx secondary school students described their experiences with the implementation of targeted supports for college and career readiness within their urban high school environment. The questions are intended to assist educators, school leaders, and community members in gaining a more profound understanding about the lived experiences of Latinx students as these students prepare for college and career paths. The following research questions were explored in the study: 1. How have language acquisition and immigration experiences influenced the academic achievement of Latinx students in urban schools? 2. How do families support and serve the needs of their Latinx children as they prepare for college and a career? 3. How do urban high schools support Latinx students with college and career readiness? (a) What kinds of school resources and programs are available for Latinx students to prepare them for college and/or career opportunities? (b) What kinds of community resources and programs are available for Latinx students to prepare them for college and/or career opportunities? This study recruited a targeted sample of 10 self-identified Latinx high school students ages 16-21 born outside of the United States or whose parents were born outside of the US. The study also included the parent, parental figure, or legal guardian of the student participants. Data was collected through one-on-one semi-structured interviews, student participant photovoice journals, along with service and resource artifacts from the study site. Upon analysis of collected data, which was coded and categorized by themes, the key findings helped to inform the existing support trends that impact or are necessary to maximize the preparation of Latinx students for college and career readiness and recommended next steps. 10. Social feedback promotes positive social sharing, trust, and closeness

Abstract

Positive social sharing is an interpersonal emotion regulation strategy that enhances positive affect and social belonging, particularly when met with positive social feedback. Despite the ubiquity of positive social sharing both in person and online, what drives this behavior is not well understood. We hypothesized that positive social feedback serves as a reward that reinforces sharing behavior and strengthens social bonds. Participants made trial-by-trial choices about whether to share social media photos with peers who returned positive ("likes") or negative ("dislikes") feedback. Unbeknownst to participants, peer conditions were manipulated to yield varying amounts of positive and negative feedback. Social bonding was subsequently measured using a trust game and subjective closeness ratings. Participants shared more with peers who provided greater rates of positive feedback. This effect generalized to trust decisions and subjective feelings of closeness and varied individually as a function of interpersonal emotion regulation in daily life. Abstract

The psychological attributes associated with both psychological potential and managerial competence are regarded as valuable assets for any company. Consequently, it is in the best interest of companies to actively search for the most potential candidates and develop their competencies. Organizations expend substantial resources to assess the potential of prospective employees during the recruitment process. This research aims to evaluate the extent to which employees' potential can predict their competencies. We assessed candidates' potential using self-report scales measuring grit and a growth mindset, while competencies in achieving results and managing change were evaluated through the assessment center method. The data was collected from 155 civil servants employed by the Makassar City Government. The findings reveal that potential does not significantly influence employees' competencies, whether it be Grit for results orientation or Growth mindset for change management competence. After conducting correlation tests between grit and growth mindset to social desirability bias, we found varied results with Grit (r= 0.1718, p = 0.03248) and growth mindset (r=0.0703, p-value = 0.3847), suggesting diverse correlations between the investigated variables. In light of these results, we recommend a reevaluation of the practice of relying on potential as a predictor of competence.

Abstract

A new species, Haplophileurus germanamati, from the western slope of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, is described and illustrated. The new species is diagnosed by the presence of six to nine small punctures at the base of the first broad elytral interval, the glabrous pygidium, and the elongated paramers. A taxonomic key to the species of Haplophileurus is provided in both English and Spanish.

Abstract

Southern brown-howler monkeys (Alouatta guariba clamitans) may harbor Trypanoxyuris sp., a pinworm parasite with documented fatal consequences in this species. Despite this risk, effective treatment protocols remain unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of two anthelmintic protocols against natural infections in two brown-howler monkeys received at the Wild Animal Care and Rehabilitation Sector (SARAS-CAV-UDESC). The protocols utilized pyrantel pamoate & praziquantel (600.0 mg, PO, single dose) and albendazole (20.0 mg, PO, daily for 5 days). Fecal egg counts were carried out daily at the Laboratory of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases (LAPAR-CAV-UDESC) before and after drug administration. Both treatments successfully eliminated Trypanoxyuris sp. infections. The animal treated with pyrantel pamoate & praziquantel achieved egg clearance by day 6 (144 h), demonstrating effectiveness with a single administration. Albendazole cleared the infection within 2 days of treatment, indicating its potential as a fast-acting treatment. No adverse effect were observed in the treated monkeys. These findings contribute to the development of evidence-based treatment protocols for Trypanoxyuris sp. in primates, enhancing animal health and welfare of captive and wild populations.

Abstract

Recruitment and retention are challenges for prospective pediatric cohort studies, particularly those involving serial venipunctures. We investigated factors underlying enrollment and retention in the Pandemic Response Repository through Microbial and Immune Surveillance and Epidemiology (PREMISE) Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) Pilot Study, a multicenter prospective longitudinal cohort study assessing the utility of immunologic surveillance for pandemic preparedness. This study enrolls children ≤10 years for two blood draws, pre- and post-EV-D68 season, separated by 6–18 months. Overall, 174 children were enrolled in Cohort 1 of the study and 120 (69 %) of children completed the study, with follow-up blood samples obtained from 101 (58 %) of participants. Families were primarily motivated to participate by a desire to help other children, advance science, and better prepare for the next pandemic. Adding research blood draws to clinically indicated blood draws improved enrollment, and multiple study touch points facilitated retention. These findings can be applied to improve recruitment and retention in future pandemic preparedness efforts and longitudinal pediatric cohort studies.

24. Randomized trial of domiciliary versus center-based rehabilitation: which is more effective in reducing falls and improving quality of life in older fallers?

Abstract

Background. To compare the effect of two modes of delivering a falls prevention service in reducing the rate of falls and improving quality of life, activity levels, and physical status among older adults with a history of recent falls. Methods. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with a total of 107 participants with blinded baseline and follow-up assessments. The participants were older community-dwelling adults referred for a falls prevention service located in Brisbane, Australia. The intervention was a multiple component falls prevention service delivered in either in a domiciliary or center-based mode of delivery. Both programs were similar apart from setting and consisted of three components, a balance and strength component, falls prevention education, and functional tasks. Physical and psychosocial assessments were administered at baseline, 8-week follow-up and 6-month follow-up. Falls data were collected by monthly telephone contact and by interview at 8 weeks and 6 months. Results. The center-based service demonstrated significantly better results in preventing falls over the home-based service. Clients in the center-based arm of the trial experienced fewer total falls and this group also had a greater reduction in the total number of fallers after the intervention. Conclusion. This research demonstrates that delivering a similar service in different settings--home based or center based--impacts upon the effectiveness of the service. Community-dwelling older adults with a history of falls should be provided with center-based programs in preference to home-based programs where they are available. doi: 10.1093/gerona/glq054

Abstract

PURPOSE: Assess systemic vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF) levels after treatment with intravitreous aflibercept, bevacizumab or ranibizumab. DESIGN: Comparative-effectiveness trial with participants randomly assigned to 2-mg aflibercept, 1.25-mg bevacizumab, or 0.3-mg ranibizumab following a retreatment algorithm. PARTICIPANTS: Participants with available plasma samples (N=436) METHODS: Plasma samples were collected before injections at baseline, 4-week, 52-week and 104-week visits. In a pre-planned secondary analysis, systemic free-VEGF levels from an ELISA immunoassay were compared across anti-VEGF agents and correlated with systemic side effects. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Changes in the natural log (ln) of plasma VEGF levels. RESULTS: Baseline free-VEGF levels were similar across all 3 groups. At 4 weeks, mean ln(VEGF) changes were −0.30±0.61, −0.31±0.54, −0.02±0.44 pg/ml for the aflibercept, bevacizumab, and ranibizumab groups, respectively. Abstract

Tall buildings are a significant feature of many urban skylines. The visual complexity of the tall buildings that make up the urban skyline can vary according to the degree of silhouette complexity and the extent to which the facade is articulated. This article reports a study in which 60 undergraduate psychology students ranked a set of 9 synthetic skylines according to either the perceived complexity of the skyline or their preference. The pleasure and arousal associated with each skyline was also measured using the Affect Grid. The strongest influence on preference, arousal, and pleasure was the degree of silhouette complexity, with higher silhouette complexity associated with higher levels of perceived complexity and preference and higher arousal and pleasure. Facade articulation only influenced the evaluations of skyline complexity, although this isolated finding may be due to the pretask training.

Abstract

Abstract Retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) are the source of all retinal cell types during retinogenesis. Until now, the isolation and expansion of RPCs has been at the expense of their multipotency. Here, we report simple methods and media for the generation, expansion, and cryopreservation of human induced pluripotent stem-cell derived-RPCs (hiRPCs). Thawed and passed hiRPCs maintained biochemical and transcriptional RPC phenotypes and their ability to differentiate into all retinal cell types. Specific conditions allowed the generation of large cultures of photoreceptor precursors enriched up to 90% within a few weeks and without a purification step. Combined RNA-seq analysis between hiRPCs and retinal organoids identified genes involved in developmental or degenerative retinal diseases. Thus, hiRPC lines could provide a valuable source of retinal cells for cell-based therapies or drug discovery and could be an advanced cellular tool to better understand retinal dystrophies.

Contexto: Com as mudanças recentes na educação, as tecnologias têm se tornado cada vez mais presentes no processo de ensino e aprendizagem. Nesse contexto, a Educação à Distância (EaD) tem se expandido no Rio Grande do Sul, por meio dos cursos oferecidos pela UFSM em parceria com a Universidade Aberta do Brasil (UAB). Esses cursos têm sido fundamentais para a formação de professores e para suprir a demanda por profissionais da educação em regiões com escassez de recursos. Metodologia: Com foco no curso de Licenciatura em Geografia UAB-UFSM, este trabalho explora as características dessa modalidade de ensino, destacando as diferenças em relação ao ensino remoto adotado durante a pandemia do coronavírus. São abordados temas como organização, planejamento de conteúdos, avaliações e atuação docente na modalidade EaD. Considerações: A Educação a Distância é uma alternativa importante para democratizar o acesso ao ensino superior no Rio Grande do Sul, permitindo que pessoas de diferentes regiões tenham a oportunidade de obter uma formação acadêmica. Além disso, os cursos em parceria com a UAB contribuem para a formação de professores e suprimem a demanda por profissionais da educação em áreas com recursos limitados. No entanto, é preciso considerar os desafios e as adaptações necessárias para garantir a qualidade do ensino e aprendizagem nesse formato.

Contexto: A partir de discussões tecidas na disciplina de Vivências Pedagógicas I, no curso de Licenciatura em Geografia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) e de visitas a escolas com educação no campo, foi possível observar que a educação que acontece no meio rural é muito diferente da educação nas escolas da cidade. Essas escolas são sinônimo de resistência e perpetuação dos conhecimentos dos povos camponeses. Metodologia: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo explorar as características e dificuldades enfrentadas pela educação no campo. Para alcançar esse objetivo, diferenciamos educação do campo e educação do campo, trazendo à tona a reflexão acerca da importância de manter as escolas nas comunidades rurais. Além disso, abordamos questões como nucleação escolar, classes multisseriadas, transporte escolar, distância das escolas e investimentos do poder público. Considerações: A educação no campo apresenta desafios diários, especialmente quando ocorre fora dos espaços urbanos. É fundamental compreender e valorizar sua importância para garantir a resistência e a preservação do conhecimento das comunidades rurais.

A multimodalidade e a Pedagogia dos Multiletramentos surgem como propostas para um ensino diferenciado, que dialoga com a realidade dos estudantes. Metodologia: Este trabalho propõe um ensino por meio de atividades interativas, que dão autonomia, participação e protagonismo aos alunos. Foi realizado um Circuito Pedagógico na Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Santa Helena, em Santa Maria, no Rio Grande do Sul, utilizando memes, desenhos animados e séries conhecidas pelos estudantes. Com base em autores que abordam multimodalidade, multiletramento e metodologias ativas, este trabalho visa melhorar o ensino de Geografia, tornando-o mais atrativo e dinâmico, utilizando a tecnologia como aliada. Considerações: A multimodalidade e a Pedagogia dos Multiletramentos no ensino de Geografia tornam o aprendizado mais envolvente e interativo, estimulando a participação ativa dos alunos. Além disso, o uso das referências culturais e tecnológicas presentes na vida dos alunos torna o ensino mais atrativo e relevante, promovendo uma discussão profunda e significativa dos fenômenos geográficos.

Contexto: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo planejar um trabalho de campo e compreender as dinâmicas acerca do seu planejamento e realização. A prática foi realizada com os alunos do 6° ano da Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Santa Helena, no Bairro Camobi, em Santa Maria/RS. Metodologia: Para o planejamento, foram efetuadas visitas à escola, quando foram elaborados questionários acerca de conteúdos de Geografia Urbana, contextualizados com as questões do bairro e do entorno da escola, para serem aplicados com moradores da área. As respostas dos questionários serviram de base para os alunos, organizados em grupos, elaborarem cartazes sobre o que poderia ser melhorado no bairro. A partir dos questionários, surgiram questões referentes a infraestrutura, meio ambiente e segurança. Além disso, foram trabalhados os conceitos de comunidade, lugar, pertencimento e direito à cidade. Considerações: A ideia inicial incluía a realização de um trabalho de campo, no entanto, não foi possível realizar a saída, em função da chuva. Por esse motivo, o trabalho ficou baseado nas respostas aos questionários e tem como finalidade abordar a importância do trabalho de campo no ensino de Geografia, com foco nos desafios para sua realização.

IntroductionMigraine is a chronic neurological disease manifesting as attacks of disabling head pain and associated symptoms. Remote electrical neuromodulation (REN) is a non-pharmacological, prescribed, wearable device (Nerivio®). This device has been certified by the FDA for the acute and/or preventive treatment of migraine with or without aura in patients 12 years of age or older. The device is affixed to the user’s arm during 45-min treatment sessions and is operated using a smartphone app. This study (NCT05769322) aims to evaluate whether frequent use of REN for the acute treatment of migraine in adolescents resulted in a reduction in monthly migraine treatment days (MMTD), as previously demonstrated in adults through a dedicated prevention clinical trial (NCT04828707).MethodsThe study included real-world prospective data from adolescent patients who used REN on at least 10 days every 28-day month, following the REN migraine prevention guideline of an every-other-day pattern. Additional requirements were at least three REN treatment days in each of the two subsequent months. The number of MMTD was used as a proxy measure for the number of monthly migraine days (MMD). The change in MMTD from the first month, taken as a “baseline,” to each of the following months was used to evaluate the presence and size of potential migraine preventive benefits of REN in adolescents.ResultsA total of 83 adolescents were eligible for analysis. The users were 15.9 ± 1.3 years of age (mean ± SD), and 89% of them were female. Este trabajo tiene como enfoque principal el estudio de las Leyes Federales Mexicanas de Migración y del Trabajo, respecto de las irregularidades jurídicas en materia de protección, respeto y defensa de los derechos humanos laborales de las personas migrantes en tránsito en territorio mexicano. Así como el análisis de diversos instrumentos internacionales aplicables a la materia y que no son tomados en consideración al momento de la impartición de justicia, dejando así en una vulnerabilidad constante a dicho sector.

Abstract

Depression is common in older people and symptoms of depression are known to substantially increase during hospitalization. There is little known about predictors of depressive symptoms in older adults or impact of common interventions during hospitalization. This study aimed to describe the magnitude of depressive symptoms, shift of depressive symptoms and the impact of the symptoms of depression among older hospital patients during hospital admission and identify whether exposure to falls prevention education affected symptoms of depression. Participants (n=1206) were older adults admitted within two Australian hospitals, the majority of participants completed the Geriatric Depression Scale - Short Form (GDS) at admission (n=1168). Participants' mean age was 74.7 (±SD 11) years and 47% (n=551) were male. At admission 53% (619 out of 1168) of participants had symptoms of clinical depression and symptoms remained at the same level at discharge for 55% (543 out of 987). Those exposed to the low intensity education program had higher GDS scores at discharge than those in the control group (low intensity vs control n=652, adjusted regression coefficient (95% CI)=0.24 (0.02, 0.45), p=0.03). The only factor other than admission level of depression that affected depressive symptoms change was if the participant was worried about falling. Older patients frequently present with symptoms of clinical depression on admission to hospital. Future research should consider these factors, whether these are modifiable and whether treatment may influence outcomes.

Abstract

This review explores treating metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) through current therapeutic modalities—anti-angiogenic therapies and immunotherapies. While these approaches represent the forefront, their limitations and variable patient responses highlight the need to comprehend underlying resistance mechanisms. We specifically investigate the role of fibrosis, prevalent in chronic kidney disease, influencing tumour growth and treatment resistance. Our focus extends to unravelling the intricate interplay between fibrosis, immunotherapy resistance, and the tumour microenvironment for effective therapy development. The analysis centres on connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), revealing its multifaceted role in ccRCC—promoting fibrosis, angiogenesis, and cancer progression. We discuss the potential of targeting CTGF to address the problem of fibrosis in ccRCC. Emphasising the crucial relationship between fibrosis and the immune system in ccRCC, we propose that targeting CTGF holds promise for overcoming obstacles to cancer treatment. However, we recognise that an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms and potential limitations is imperative and, therefore, advocate for further research. This is an essential prerequisite for the successful integration of CTGF-targeted therapies into the clinical landscape.

Introducción: El catéter venoso central es necesario en los cuidados pediátricos, sin embargo, es una causa importante de bacteriemia nosocomial con 25% de mortandad. El profesional de enfermería es responsable del mantenimiento del catéter venoso central con el propósito de evitar complicaciones locales y sistémicas como la endocarditis y la bacteriemia relacionadas al tratamiento endovenoso.Objetivo: Describir las intervenciones de enfermería para el mantenimiento del catéter venoso central en pacientes pediátricos de un hospital especializado.Metodología: Diseño observacional, descriptivo, transversal, muestra conformada por 85 profesionales de enfermería que otorgaron cuidados directos a niños hospitalizados y recibieron capacitación, muestreo no probabilístico, el instrumento utilizado fue una lista de verificación de mantenimiento del catéter venoso central. Se recolectaron datos con la técnica de observación. El estudio cumple con los aspectos éticos de la ley general de salud en materia de investigación.Resultados: Las intervenciones de enfermería se realizaron con un cumplimiento global de 90.1%, se enfatiza que 70.6% efectuaron lavado de manos antes de manipular el dispositivo. La limpieza y mantenimiento del sitio de inserción la realizaron 98.8%, desinfectaron puertos y conexiones, identificaron lúmenes 92.9%.Conclusión: Los profesionales de enfermería realizan las intervenciones para el mantenimiento del catéter venoso central con un cumplimiento bueno. Sin embargo, las intervenciones con menor cumplimiento que requieren mejora son la higiene de manos, los tiempos para cambios de equipo y soluciones, la desinfección de puertos y conexiones; esenciales para disminuir las infecciones del torrente sanguíneo. Además de estudios futuros acerca de los factores profesionales e institucionales asociados al cumplimiento.

47. Improving Education and Care in Student-Run Clinics: A Didactic Intervention for Pre-Clinical Medical Students

Abstract

Background: Merging education with clinical care is essential at student-run clinics.Methods: First year medical students participated in 15-minute small-group didactic sessions monthly from January through May 2011. Topics included diabetes, hypertension, mood disorders, and back pain. After the intervention, a 10-question survey comprised of eight 7-point Likert items and two narrative response questions was made available online to all eligible students. Patient encounter times during the intervention period were recorded and compared to the year prior to intervention.Results: Fourteen of 26 students (54%) responded to the survey. All students found the intervention to offer more information about standards of practice than their courses. Of respondents, 64.3% agreed or strongly agreed they provided better patient care with the intervention. Students reported a higher probability of using standards of practice: 57.1% agreed and 21.4% strongly agreed. Abstract

It is unclear whether intensive surveillance protocols have resulted in a decreased incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To determine the prevalence and characteristics of IBD associated high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or CRC that was undetected on prior colonoscopy. This is a single-center, retrospective study from 1994 to 2013. All participants had a confirmed IBD diagnosis and underwent a colectomy with either HGD or CRC found in the colectomy specimen.The undetected group had no HGD or CRC on prior colonoscopies. The detected group had HGD or CRC identified on previous biopsies. Of 70 participants, with ulcerative colitis (UC) (n = 47), Crohn’s disease (CD) (n = 21), and indeterminate colitis (n = 2), 29% (n = 20) had undetected HGD/CRC at colectomy (15 HGD and 5 CRC). In the undetected group, 75% had prior LGD, 15% had indefinite dysplasia, and 10% had no dysplasia (HGD was found in colonic strictures). Patients in the undetected group were more likely to have pancolitis (55 vs. 20%) and multifocal dysplasia (35 vs. 8%). The undetected group was less likely to have CRC at colectomy (25 vs. 62%). There was a trend toward right-sided HGD/CRC at colectomy (40 vs. 20%; p = 0.08). In addition, 84% of the lesions found in the rectum at colectomy were not seen on prior colonoscopy in the undetected group. The prevalence of previously undetected HGD/CRC in IBD found at colectomy was 29%. The high proportion of undetected rectal and right-sided HGD/CRC suggests that these areas may need greater attention during surveillance.

Abstract

Research on strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is still not much in number, particularly, in developing countries. Although SMEs play an important role in economic development, this sector has received less attention in research on its competitiveness through social responsibility. According to previous literature, SMEs have unconsciously practiced social responsibility but have not integrated it into their strategy. The same condition has also occurred to SMEs in Badung district, Bali, where they practice social responsibility in running their business as an embodiment of a philosophy based on religious teachings. However, this type of CSR has not yet made a positive contribution to their competitiveness. This study attempts to answer what elements are required to obtain CSR as a strategy. Interpretive Structural Modeling methodology was implemented in the SMEs located in Badung Regency, Bali. The study finds that the integration of strategic CSR into SMEs’ strategy was focused on a new paradigm to improve SMEs’ competitiveness. This new way of thinking can be achieved by intensively socializing the benefits of strategic CSR through education, relevant policy and collaboration between related stakeholders.
