Abstract

The fast-paced development of state-of-the-art limited area models and faster computational resources have made it possible to create simulations at increasing horizontal resolution. This has led to a ubiquitous demand for even higher resolutions from users of various disciplines. This study revisits one of the simulations used in marine ecosystem projects at the Bjerknes Centre. We present a fresh perspective on the assessment of these data, related more specifically to: a) the value added by increased horizontal resolution; and b) a new method for comparing sensitivity studies. The assessment is made using a Bayesian framework for the distribution of mean surface temperature in the Hardanger fjord region in Norway. Population estimates are calculated based on samples from the joint posterior distribution generated using a Monte Carlo procedure. The Bayesian statistical model is applied to output data from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model at three horizontal resolutions (9, 3 and 1 km) and the ERA Interim Reanalysis. The period considered in this study is from 2007 to 2009, for the months of April, May and June.

13. A step towards high resolution modeling of the central Faroe shelf circulation by FarCoast800

Abstract

This paper describes the FarCoast800 model setup for the Faroe shelf and the validation towards observations. We found that the circulation was in accordance with observations on the shelf and the upper similar to 500m of the water column, away from the lateral boundaries. Furthermore, we found high correlations between the model and observations for the on-shelf water, in particular for short-term variations of temperature, demonstrating the importance of high resolution atmospheric forcing. A main challenge for this study was the lateral boundary conditions at all four open boundaries in the varying and steep bathymetry of the FarCoast800 model setup. We also investigated the origin of water reaching the different areas of the shelf. Notably our results indicated intrusion of water originating from the East Icelandic Current into the deeper areas on the eastern part of the Faroe shelf.Our long term motivation of the study was to investigate the capability of the model to drive an even higher resolution ROMS model setup for the central Faroe shelf, enabling the resolution of processes on a 100m scale or less. The study concludes that FarCoast800 can drive a high-resolution nested model area on the Faroe shelf.Here we present a Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS) model setup for the Faroe shelf with a horizontal resolution of 800m x 800m and 35 vertical layers. The model setup is forced by a high resolution atmospheric model, and forced by a 4km x 4km horizontal resolution version of the ROMS model on the lateral boundaries. Abstract

European remote sensing (ERS) satellites synthetic aperture radar (SAR) wind retrievals using CMOD-IFR2 are, for the first time, retrieved in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) and in Arctic coastal areas and compared with in situ observations from reseach vessels (RVs) and output from a high-resolution atmospheric model. The root mean squares (rms) of the comparisons were 1.6 [ms.sup.-1] and 2 [ms.sup.1], respectively. The spatial variation of the SAR wind fields established a decrease in wind speed close to the ice edge for the late summer situations where the wind was along the ice edge with the ice to the left. This decrease is believed to be due to changes in atmospheric stability, possibly through development of an internal boundary layer caused by the cold ice cover and melt water. Lower wind speed near the ice edge is confirmed by the atmospheric model and the in situ observations. Furthermore, good results are obtained from SAR wind retrieval in leads when compared with model output during a cold-air outbreak. Routine measurements in the MIZ are useful for estimating the wind stress, and therefore SAR may play an important role in this region. Finally, the identification of a jet out from Hinlopen Strait in the Svalbard region and low wind wakes along the coast in the SAR-retrieved wind field is confirmed by in situ observations as the RV moves through the region. The jet is also confirmed by the atmospheric model, which is able to reproduce the situation. Abstract

The European eel hatches in the Sargasso Sea and migrates across the Atlantic Ocean toward Europe. At the continental shelf, larvae metamorphose into glass eels and then recruit to coastal habitats and estuaries. Among other cues, glass eels orient in situ using lunar cues, but what role this lunar compass plays in their recruitment to the coast is unknown. To assess this, we incorporated empirical in situ observations of glass eel swimming and lunar‐driven orientation into a biophysical advection model. We simulated dispersal of glass eels drifting with the North Atlantic Current to test the hypothesis that lunar‐driven swimming and orientation behavior affects recruitment to North Sea coasts. Particles were released from the continental slope north of Scotland, an obligate passage for migrating eel larvae. Four numerical experiments were conducted: one with passive drift and three including glass eel swimming speeds (ranging from 3 to 12 cm/s) and lunar‐driven orientation. With a speed of 3 cm/s, the lunar compass increased recruitment to the North Sea coasts of Southwestern Norway and Scotland by 34%–40%. Conversely, orientation behavior decreased recruitment to northern areas like Iceland (−46%), the Faroe Islands (−39%) and Northern Norway (−49%). Behavior affected the timing of recruitment to Southwestern Norway, causing peaks of abundance in May–June, but not to other regions. These results show that lunar‐driven orientation and swimming behavior observed in glass eels substantially increases their recruitment to North Sea coasts. Ekspertgruppen ble i mars 2017 oppnevnt for ett år for å foreta en vurdering av lakselusindusert dødelighet på villfisk i 13 produksjonsområder i Norge. En foreløpig rapport basert på data fra 2016 ble levert i april 2017 og den endelige rapporten som også inkluderer data fra 2017 er ferdigstilt i september 2017. De siste data fra overvåkingssesongen 2017 kom inn medio august noe som betyr at det har vært svært kort tid frem til ferdigstilling av rapporten fra ekspertgruppen. Ekspertgruppen har i sin vurdering benyttet data fra NALO (nasjonalt overvåkningsprogram for lakselus), resultater fra modellert smittepress og resultater fra modeller som beregner smitte og dødelighet på vill laksesmolt. I tillegg kommer annen relevant litteratur. Overvåkingsdata og ulike modeller har usikkerheter og i mandatet er ekspertgruppen også bedt om å vurdere usikkerhet i alle ledd av analysen. Det er generelt høy usikkerhet knyttet til utvandringsforløp og utvandringsruter for vill laksesmolt i alle produksjonsområdene. Ekspertgruppen er samstemt i at overvåkingsdata har lavest usikkerhet og at de ulike modellene har høyere usikkerhet. Usikkerhet for de ulike modellene er beskrevet i rapporten men ekspertgruppen har ikke klart å enes om en rangering av de ulike modellene basert på usikkerhet. Ekspertgruppen er samstemt i konklusjonene og i vurderingen av usikkerhetene i alle produksjonsområdene. I 2016 ble risikoen for lakselusindusert dødelighet satt til moderat for fem produksjonsområder (PO2, PO4, PO5, PO6 og PO7), høy risiko for lakselusindusert dødelighet ble satt i ett område (PO3) og i de øvrige syv områdene ble risikoen for lakselusindusert dødelighet satt til lav (PO1, PO8, PO9, PO10, PO11, PO12 og PO13). I 2017 ble ti områder satt til å ha lav risiko for lakselusindusert dødelighet (PO1, PO2, PO6, PO7, PO8, PO9, PO10, PO11, PO12 og PO13), moderat risiko for lakselusindusert dødelighet ble satt i ett område (PO5) og høy risiko for lakselusindusert dødelighet ble satt for to områder (PO3 og PO4). Konklusjonen i PO2 og PO6 har høy usikkerhet. Framover blir det viktig å ytterliggere validere og kvantifisere usikkerheten i modellene som beregner lakselusindusert dødelighet. I denne sammenheng vil økt kunnskap om utvandringsforløp og utvandringsruter til vill laksesmolt være svært viktig. I tillegg bør man evaluere dødelighetsgrensene med nye lab-studier (benytte villaks fra ulike populasjoner) og undersøke effekten av kopepoditter og chalimus på overlevelse.

Abstract

The abundance of salmon lice in the Hardangerfjord is potentially large enough to be a threat to the wild fish stocks of the fjord. The salmon louse spends a period of 2–4 weeks in its planktonic stages drifting in the current of the upper water masses of the fjord looking for suitable hosts on which to settle. It is important to assess the abundance and distribution of the lice in their planktonic phases in order to evaluate the infection pressure they represent to the wild fish. The current system of the upper water masses in the Hardangerfjord is highly variable and consists of a multitude of components. This implicates a similar variability of the salmon lice dispersion. We find the most efficient transport mechanism for planktonic salmon lice to be from internal pressure due to lateral variations of the water mass density. From current observations we find large water exchanges of the upper water masses in the fjord lasting for several days, approximately monthly. Numerical model results indicate that these exchange episodes extend for the whole length of the fjord. Hence, the salmon lice will be regularly transported several tens of kilometres. We find the influence area of salmon lice from a source to be potentially large as a small number of lice can cover large areas. However, the majority of the lice will stay relatively close to the source but not necessarily with the highest abundance in the source area.
