The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a research facility being built in Lund, Sweden. The Integrated Control System (ICS) division at ESS is responsible for defining and providing a control system for all the ESS facility. ICS decided to establish open-source EtherCAT systems for mid-performance data acquisition and motion control for accelerator applications. For instance, EtherCAT will be used when the I/O system needs to be beam-synchronous; it needs to acquire signals in the kHz range; or needs to be spread across locations that are far from each other and would need cumbersome cabling, but still, belong to one system. Following the ICS guideline, Motion Control and Automation Group developed EtherCAT Motion Control (ECMC) which is based on EtherLab open-source master. This solution was focused on Motion Control applications, but finally, data acquisition systems will be integrated into EPICS using the same approach. Regardless of new mining technologies and environmental regulations, the minerals we extract from the earth’s crust will eventually run out. Likewise, our society demands a constant increase of technology to improve our quality of life. Mining in Zero Gravity is a speculative design project that offers a vision of our first attempt at mining platinum group metals from asteroids by the year 2040. Kolibri is designed within the boundaries of the future challenges facing the mining industry and the development of our space industry.

The CRISPR–Cas9 system and nested homologous recombination was used to integrate xylB, xylX, xylA together with xylD or xad from plasmid pAGS8B or pAGS8HB, respectively, replacing the GRE3 ORF (panel A). This resulted in strain TMB4530 (xylB, xylD, xylX and xylA) and strain TMB4531 (xylB, xad, xylX and xylA). The 20 bp gRNA sequence used to target the Cas9 nuclease to the GRE3 ORF is shown in bold. Additional file 2. The values reported are calculated from cultivations on defined media with xylose (50 g/L) as carbon source. The specific growth rate is calculated from the exponential phase. Yields and titers are calculated from a single time point in the end of the cultivation. Reported values represent the mean ± SD of at least two independent cultivations performed. Transport is an important aspect to take account in efforts to achieve sustainable tourism development. If we do not change our behavior regarding travel, the consequences will be significant for the environment. This study examines the various transport operators on the two Swedish ski resorts if their websites and marketing are different from each other in the mode selection. The destinations are Åre and Hemavan Tärnaby. They studied modes are two Swedish airlines, two train companies, three bus companies and three taxi companies.These corporate websites are studied with a content analysis in which the results of the keywords that have been developed are scored according to different categories. The result shows that big companies such as airlines and train operators display a deliberate and far-reaching work with environment and sustainability issues. Large taxi companies have a good job while small taxi business seems to have less opportunities and willingness to work with these issues. The bus companies' websites also have lower scores and are worse in presenting its environmental work.

A self-contained self-rescue unit is a device that is used in the mining industry in case of fires or release of toxic gases that depletes or contaminates breathable oxygen in the surrounding atmosphere. These units are the first line of defense by providing oxygen in a closed breathing cycle, allowing personnel to get themselves to safety. The goal of this project was to design a unit that is more comfortable to carry during the daily operations in and outside the mines. A unit that is easier to done and less likely to damage the users and/or surrounding mining equipment. It is developed in close collaboration with Atlas Copco, as the main sponsor, as well as Dräger and personnel working at Zink Gruvan Mining. The result is a unit with an operational time of twenty minutes and a reduced size and weight. It’s position can be adjusted to be worn around the waist or the chest, depending on the tasks the user performs, as well as simplifying the donning procedure.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden has just entered into neutron beam line construction starting detailed design in 2015. As a collaboration of 17 European countries the majority of hardware devices will be provided in-kind. This presents numerous technical and organizational challenges for the construction and the integration of the neutron instrumentation into the facility wide infrastructure; notably the EPICS control network and the facilities absolute timing system. In this contribution we present a strategy for the modularity of the instruments hardware with well-defined standardized functionality and a minimized number of control & data interfaces. Key point of the strategy is the time stamping of all readings from the instruments control electronics extending the event mode data acquisition from detected neutron events to all metadata. This gives the control software the flexibility necessary to adapt the functionality of the instruments to the demands of each single experimental run. Enzymes are gaining increasing importance as catalysts for selective transformations in organic synthetic chemistry. The engineering and design of enzymes is a developing, growing research field that is employed in biocatalysis. In the present thesis, combinatorial protein engineering methods are applied for the development of Candida antarctica lipase A (CALA) variants with broader substrate scope and increased enantioselectivity. Initially, the structure of CALA was deduced by manual modelling and later the structure was established by X-ray crystallography. The elucidation of the structure of CALA revealed several biocatalytically interesting features. With the knowledge derived from the enzyme structure, enzyme variants were produced via iterative saturation mutagenesis (ISM), a powerful protein engineering approach. Several of these variants were highly active and enantioselective towards bulky esters. Furthermore, an extensively combinatorial protein engineering approach was developed and investigated. A CALA variant with a spacious substrate binding pocket that can accommodate an unusually bulky substrate, an ester derivate of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (S)-ibuprofen, was obtained with this approach.
