This paper explores the potential of machine learning techniques to predict the soil water retention curve based on physical characterization parameters. Results from 794 water retention and suction points obtained from 51 different soils were used in the algorithm. The soil properties used are the percentages of gravel, sand, silt, and clay, the plasticity index, the porosity, and the relation between the volumetric water content and total suction. The data were used as input for machine learning estimators to predict the volumetric water content of a soil with specified physical characterization parameters and suction, the techniques of artificial intelligence were developed in python. Results show that an extremely randomized trees’ estimator can reach a coefficient of determination of 0.99 in the training dataset, with a coefficient of 0.90 in the cross-validation and testing dataset, which measures the generalization capacity. Furthermore, a continuous function can be obtained by fitting a model such as Cavalcante & Zornberg, or van Genuchten, or Costa & Cavalcante (bimodal) to the predictions of the machine learning for use in numerical methods. These results indicate that the proposed machine learning estimator can become an interesting alternative to estimate the soil water retention curve in engineering practice. Fiber Reinforced Soils (FRS) are mixtures of discrete fibers with the soil to create a composite with improved mechanical properties compared to unreinforced material that depends on several soil and fiber properties. Therefore, comparative studies are needed to better understand their influence on FRS mechanical response. This paper analyzes the results of a comprehensive triaxial testing program performed on specimens of two different sands at the same relative density focusing on how the grain size distribution affects the composite behavior in terms of shear strength and dilatancy. It is shown that the grain size curve’s uniformity coefficient (Cu) is one of the critical variables controlling FRS’s dilatancy. Dune sand specimens (Cu = 1.79) presented dilatancy even for confining stresses as high as 300 kPa. The shear gains due to reinforcement were controlled by fiber length (L) and percentage (Pf), and size and shape of soil particles. River sand specimens with L = 51 mm and 1% fiber addition (dry mass) presented increments of 47.7 kPa in soil cohesion and a 5.2o increase in the soil friction angle compared to unreinforced material.

Corrosion is one of the main phenomena that lead to pathological manifestations in reinforced concrete structures under aggressive environments. with the chloride ion being the most responsible for its occurrence. In this way, understanding the transport mechanisms of this ion through the microstructure of the concrete is of fundamental importance to prevent or delay the penetration of these aggressive agents to guarantee a durable structure. In the literature, there are extensive studies concerning the diffusion of chlorides in concrete and the influence of pozzolanic additions in this mechanism. However, only a few correlate the different methods of analysis. This work aims to determine the chloride ion diffusion coefficients in concrete containing various levels of silica fume (5%, 10%, and 15%) or varying the mortar content (54%, 80%, and 100%), and compares the results obtained through column tests and chloride migration tests. It was observed that, although the techniques used were quite distinct, the diffusion values obtained were similar, contributing to the validation of both techniques. Furthermore, the variation in the mortar ratio causes a reduction in the interfacial transition zone of coarse aggregate/mortars and an increase in the content of aluminates, which promotes a similar effect to the use of silica fume. Resumo A corrosão é um dos principais fenômenos que geram manifestações patológicas nas estruturas de concreto armado em ambientes agressivos, sendo o íon cloro o maior responsável por sua ocorrência. Desta forma, entender os mecanismos de transporte deste íon através da microestrutura do concreto é de fundamental importância para impedir ou retardar a penetração destes agentes agressivos, visando garantir uma estrutura durável. Na literatura são vastos os estudos referentes à difusão de cloretos em concreto e a influência das adições pozolânicas neste mecanismo, entretanto, poucos correlacionam os diferentes métodos de análise. Assim, este trabalho visa determinar os coeficientes de difusão do íon cloro em concretos contendo diversos teores de adição de sílica ativa (5%, 10% e 15%) ou com variação do teor de argamassa (54%, 80% e 100%), comparando os resultados obtidos por meio dos ensaios de migração iônica e de coluna. Observou-se que, apesar das técnicas utilizadas serem bastante distintas, os valores de coeficientes de difusão obtidos foram semelhantes, colaborando para a validação de ambas as técnicas. Além disso, a variação no teor de argamassa acarreta uma redução na zona de transição interfacial agregado graúdo/argamassas e um aumento no teor de aluminatos, o que promove efeito semelhante ao uso de sílica ativa.

RESUMO O artigo é decorrente de uma investigação etnográfica que, fundamentada nas contribuições dos estudos sociais da infância, teve como objetivo pesquisar a produção de culturas lúdicas infantis por crianças pré-escolares na educação infantil. Metodologicamente, foram utilizados como estratégias a observação, os registros escritos e fotográficos e as rodas de conversa com as crianças. Com base nas análises, mapearam-se as gestualidades, as relações afetivas e as musicalidades expressas pelas crianças como unidades analíticas que ilustram a produção das culturas lúdicas em situações cotidianas que não se encontram vinculadas necessariamente às brincadeiras. Por meio da pesquisa, foi possível inferir que as culturas lúdicas dizem respeito à sensibilidade das crianças em reconhecer experiências lúdicas, também naquilo que escapa às suas referências culturais, ao se perceberem envolvidas afetivamente em situações ainda não experimentadas nos diversos ambientes dos quais fazem parte. RESUMEN El artículo se deriva de una investigación etnográfica que, a partir de las contribuciones de los estudios sociales de la infancia, objetivó investigar la producción de culturas lúdicas por niños en la educación infantil. Metodológicamente se utilizaron, la observación, los registros escritos, fotográficos y las ruedas de conversación con los niños. Con base en los análisis, se mapearon las gestualidades, las relaciones afectivas y las musicalidades expresadas por los niños como unidades analíticas que ilustran la producción de las culturas lúdicas en situaciones cotidianas que no se encuentran necesariamente asociadas a los juegos. A través de la investigación, se pudo inferir que las culturas lúdicas corresponden a la sensibilidad de los niños en reconocer experiencias lúdicas, incluso en lo que escapa a sus referencias culturales, cuando se perciben involucrados afectivamente en situaciones todavía no experimentadas en los varios ambientes de los cuales forman parte. ABSTRACT This article results from an ethnographic investigation that, based on contributions from the social studies of childhood, aimed to research the production of ludic cultures by pre-school children in early childhood education. Methodologically, we used the strategies of observation, written and photographic records, and conversation circles with children. Based on the analyses, the gestures, affective relationships, and musicalities expressed by the children were mapped as analytical units that illustrate the production of ludic cultures in everyday situations that are not necessarily linked to playing. Through the research, we could infer that ludic cultures relate to the children’s sensitivity in recognizing playful experiences, including aspects that escape their cultural references, when they find themselves emotionally involved in situations not yet experienced in the various environments of which they are part.

Spectrum sensing is one of the major challenges for commercial development of cognitive radio systems, since the detection of the presence of a primary user is a complex task that requires high reliability. This work proposes a signal classifier capable of detecting and identifying a primary user signal on a given channel of the radio spectrum. The proposed approach combines eigen-decomposition techniques and neural networks not only to decide about the presence of a primary user, but also to identify the primary user signal type, a feature that is not encountered in the current approaches proposed in literature. Besides the advantage of identifying the primary user type, the proposed method also considerably reduces the computational cost of the detection process. The proposed classification method has been applied to the development of five primary user signal Classification Modules, which includes wireless microphone, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing and Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial signals. The results show that the proposed classifier correctly detects and identifies the primary users, even under low signal to noise ratio and multipath scenarios.

Decomposition is a technology-independent process, in which a large complex function is broken into smaller, less complex functions. The costs of two-level or factored-form representations (cubes and literals) are used in most decomposition methods, as they have a high correlation with the area of cell-based designs. However, this correlation is weaker for field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) based on look-up tables. Furthermore, local optimizations have limited power due to the structural bias of the circuit descriptions. This paper tries to reduce the structural biasing by remapping the LUT network and decomposing the derived functions using the support as cost function. The proposed method improves the FPGA mapping results of a commercial tool for the 20 largest MCNC benchmarks, with gains of 28% in delay plus 18% in area when targeting delay, and a reduction of 28% in area plus 14% in delay with area as cost function. Results with 23% less area and 6% less delay are obtained after physical synthesis (post place-and-route). Moreover, 12 of the best known results for delay (and 3 for area) of the EPFL benchmarks are improved.

According to IEEE 802.22, a cognitive base station uses the spectrum manager (SM) entity to control all the secondary users (SUs) and channels under its coverage area. This work proposes a novel approach for channel allocation in Cognitive Radio (CR) networks, through the use of a predictive and adaptive database. The aim of the proposed method is to improve the performance of the SM on the channel allocation procedure in cognitive radio networks. The SM uses the predicted data, obtained through a spectrum-modeling algorithm that emulates channel utilization, in order to allocate those channels with higher probability of being idle. The adaptive characteristic is ensured through periodic updates of the database, which are based on channel sensing results. Thus, channels are ranked so that those with best performance are preferred for SU allocation. Simulation results show that the use of the predictive and adaptive features presents better results than methods that do not consider such features. Furthermore, the results show that the number of channel sensing operations performed by the cognitive devices is greatly reduced when using the proposed channel allocation method, which improves the overall network performance.

A inserção da Educação Física na Área das Linguagens tem gerado diversos debates. A partir disto, este estudo se propõe a compreender como os professores de Educação Física e os supervisores escolares do Ensino Médio percebem tal inserção. Para tanto, foi feita uma pesquisa situada numa perspectiva pós-estruturalista, desenvolvida em escolas públicas estaduais de Porto Alegre. Este artigo está organizado em cinco seções que apresentam os rumos investigativos, os documentos legais que balizam a discussão, uma reflexão sobre a linguagem, uma análise da posição dos professores e supervisores e as considerações finais sobre o estudo. As interpretações indicam que os docentes entrevistados parecem evidenciar diferentes percepções sobre o lugar da Educação Física nesse novo desenho curricular. Prevalece a ideia de linguagem como comunicação e expressão, desafiando-nos a refletir sobre as possibilidades de ampliar a discussão no âmbito da formação inicial e continuada de professores.

Os dados de predi??o s?o gerados por um algoritmo de modelagem de espectro que permite simular a ocupa??o dos canais em faixas de tecnologia celular. O uso de predi??o possibilita a identifica??o de oportunidades nas bandas de interesse, permitindo priorizar a utiliza??o dos canais com maior probabilidade de estarem livres. Dessa forma, este trabalho estende a abrang?ncia da IEEE 802.22, na medida em que prop?e o uso de dados de predi??o, bem como a utiliza??o de faixas de tecnologia celular que s?o comumente utilizadas em ?reas urbanas. O car?ter adaptativo do sistema desenvolvido atualiza a lista de canais de forma din?mica ao longo dos ciclos de aloca??o. Esta caracter?stica possibilita a prioriza??o dos canais com maior sucesso no processo de aloca??o, uma vez que a lista de canais ? atualizada de acordo com os resultados das aloca??es dos usu?rios secund?rios (SUs). A metodologia proposta busca realizar a aloca??o do SU com o m?nimo necess?rio de opera??es de detec??o de canal. A adaptabilidade da base de dados de canais ? o fator que possui maior contribui??o na redu??o das opera??es de detec??o de canal na CRN. A diminui??o das opera??es de detec??o de canal reduz a troca de informa??es entre as fun??es que comp?em o plano cognitivo de uma CRN. This work proposes a channel allocation methodology in a cognitive radio network (CRN) that uses a predictive and adaptive channel database. A spectrummodeling algorithm, that allows simulating channel occupation in cellular technology bands, generates the prediction data. The use of prediction enables the identification of opportunities in the bands of interest, which allows prioritizing the use of those channels with greater probability of being idle. Thus, this work extends the scope of IEEE 802.22, in that proposes the use of prediction data, as well as the use of cellular technology bands, which are commonly used in urban areas. The adaptive nature of the developed system updates the channel list dynamically over the allocation cycles. This feature enables to prioritize the channels with greater success in the allocation process, since the channel list is updated according to the results of secondary users (SUs) allocation. The proposed methodology aims to allocate the SU with the minimum of channel sensing operations required. The adaptive feature of the channel database gives a major contribution to reducing the channel sensing operations in the CRN. The decrease in channel sensing operations reduces the exchange of information between the functions that comprise the cognitive plane of a CRN. Consequently, a reduction in the network signaling traffic is expected, as well as a reduction of delays resulting from the search of available channels.

It was investigated in what ways these teachers establish evaluative criteria for issues of Mathematics and how they evaluate these questions taken from PISA, ENEM and PROOF BRAZIL. Besides this we attempted to check how teachers are using assessment in their teaching and how they see the error of the student in resolving these issues. Data were collected through questionnaires and application of an instrument containing questions for teachers would use the same on the resolution was judged convenient to subsequently establish their criteria. Research results showed that one of the teachers presents classical trend, one has trend technicist and two give evidence constructivist trend. One of the teachers, although it solved the issues properly, like the others, did not present any evaluation criteria. Thus, it is understood that the purpose of the dissertation research on assessment in mathematics from a workshop with teachers of Mathematics in Basic Education was fulfilled . A dissertação abordou o tema avaliação no ensino e aprendizagem da Matemática e teve como problema de pesquisa determinar quais critérios avaliativos podem ser elaborados por professores em questões de Matemática retiradas de avaliações nacionais e internacionais em uma oficina sobre avaliação envolvendo professores de uma escola da cidade de Santa Maria no Rio Grande do Sul. Investigou-se de que formas esses professores estabelecem critérios avaliativos para questões de Matemática e como eles avaliam essas questões retiradas do PISA, ENEM e PROVA BRASIL. Além desse buscou-se verifica como os professores estão utilizando a avaliação em sua prática pedagógica e como encaram o erro do aluno na resolução dessas questões. Os dados foram coletados por meio de questionários e aplicação de um instrumento contendo as questões para que os professores utilizassem resolução das mesmas se julgassem conveniente para, posteriormente, estabelecerem os respectivos critérios. Os resultados da investigação mostraram que um dos professores apresenta tendência clássica; um apresenta tendência tecnicista e dois dão indícios de tendência construtivista. Um dos professores, embora tenha resolvido as questões corretamente, a exemplo dos demais, não apresentou nenhum critério de avaliação. Dessa forma, entende-se que o objetivo da dissertação de investigar sobre o processo de avaliação em Matemática a partir de uma oficina com professores de Matemática da Educação Básica foi cumprido.

It is commonly accepted that the shear strength of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is enhanced by the reinforcement effect of its fibrous constituents. However, most papers in the technical literature do not systematically evaluate the effect of the MSW fibers on its stress-strain-strength response. This paper presents results of a series of laboratory triaxial tests performed to evaluate the effect of the MSW fiber content and solid particle compressibility on its mechanical behavior. The variation in the MSW shear strength and shear strength parameters with fiber content and axial strain are analyzed, the effective parameters obtained from CD and CU tests are compared and the applicability of Terzaghi’s equation for MSW materials discussed. Test results were used to calculate the Factor of Safety, FS, for some slope geometrical configurations and the results were used to create some charts relating FS, fiber content and the slope geometry. The authors believe this subject could be of interest to landfill management companies, especially considering the new trend in plastic material recycling for energy recovery purposes.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-12-01 This experimental light microscopy study investigated the formation of a hybrid layer and resin tags on sound dentin, after utilization of conventional and self-etching adhesive systems. After restorative procedures, the specimens were decalcified in a formic acid and sodium citrate solution, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 6-microm thickness and stained by the Brown & Brenn method for analysis and measurement by light microscopy (AXIOPHOT) (400x). The results were statistically analyzed by analysis of variance, at a significance level of 5%. Based on the results, it could be concluded that the conventional adhesive allowed the formation of a thicker hybrid layer than the self-etching adhesive, with similar penetration into the dentinal tubules (resin tags).

Os critérios propostos foram: potencialidade hídrica total e efetiva; favorabilidade quanto à explotação; avaliação qualitativa dos parâmetros hidráulicos; vazão de base de drenagem superficial, vazão do poço obtida em ensaio de bombeamento; qualidade hidroquímica do poço. Para utilização desses critérios foram desenvolvidas / aprimoradas algumas ferramentas de análise: novo zoneamento hídrico, cálculo de reservas e potencialidades e classificação das zonas hídricas quanto ao grau de favorabilidade à explotação. A metodologia proposta para avaliação do processo de outorga integra os critérios técnicos às ferramentas de análise para liberação dos processos de outorga de águas subterrâneas na região do Complexo Industrial e entorno. No processo metodológico para avaliação das outorgas foi incorporado a ferramenta do modelo numérico de fluxo existente para a região, MNFR, validando o uso do modelo em relação aos prognósticos de novos poços de produção. Para isso, no estudo de caso, foi feita a simulação de ensaios de bombeamento em regime transiente, calibrados com dados reais de nível medidos em poços de observação, dando resultados satisfatórios, desde que respeitadas as condições da hidrogeologia local. Para avaliação da metodologia proposta, foi analisado um processo de outorga liberado para a região (bateria de 11 poços), buscando identificar os fatores que poderiam melhorar a gestão dos recursos hídricos na região. Verificou-se que o processo de gestão atual não prevê o uso sustentável dos recursos hídricos subterrâneos para cada zona hídrica. Além disso, para o estudo de caso avaliado pela nova metodologia, a outorga seria parcialmente negada, uma vez que demanda dos poços é superior a potencialidade hídrica calculada para a zona hídrica em que os poços estão inseridos.
