Abstract: Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is highly prevalent after lung transplantation (LTx) and is suspected to favor the development of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD), almost of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) phenotype. The preventive effect of antireflux surgery (ARS) on BOS/CLAD onset in patients with GERD still remains debated. We compared the outcome (freedom from CLAD and graft survival) of patients with GERD with or without performed ARS (GERD-ARS and GERD-noARS groups) and those without GERD (noGERD group) in our LTx cohort. Methods: Data from 284 LTx recipients with available post-LTx pHmetry findings were reviewed (2001-2014). We focused on the outcome of 244 patients without CLAD at the date of pHmetry. Results: Among 244 stable patients at the date of pHmetry, 78 patients did not have GERD and 166 patients had GERD [41 with and 125 without ARS performed]). The mean DeMeester score was higher in the GERD-ARS group than GERD-noARS group (p = 0.03). Abstract: Introduction Lung transplantation (LTx) aims at improving survival and quality of life for patients with end-stage lung diseases. Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is used as intraoperative support for LTx, despite no precise guidelines for its initiation. We aim to evaluate two strategies of VA-ECMO initiation in the perioperative period in patients with obstructive or restrictive lung disease requiring bilateral LTx. In the control ‘on-demand’ arm, high haemodynamic and respiratory needs will dictate VA-ECMO initiation; in the experimental ‘systematic’ arm, VA-ECMO will be pre-emptively initiated. We hypothesise a ‘systematic’ strategy will increase the number of ventilatory-free days at day 28.Methods and analysis We designed a multicentre randomised controlled trial in parallel groups. Adult patients with obstructive or restrictive lung disease requiring bilateral LTx, without a formal indication for pre-emptive VA-ECMO before LTx, will be included. Patients with preoperative pulmonary hypertension with haemodynamic collapse, ECMO as a bridge to transplantation, severe hypoxaemia or hypercarbia will be secondarily excluded. In the systematic group, VA-ECMO will be systematically implanted before the first pulmonary artery cross-clamp. In the on-demand group, VA-ECMO will be implanted intraoperatively if haemodynamic or respiratory indices meet preplanned criteria. Non-inclusion, secondary exclusion and VA-ECMO initiation criteria were validated by a Delphi process among investigators. Postoperative weaning of ECMO and mechanical ventilation will be managed according to best practice guidelines. The number of ventilator-free days at 28 days (primary endpoint) will be compared between the two groups in the intention-to-treat population. Secondary endpoints encompass organ failure occurrence, day 28, day 90 and year 1 vital status, and adverse events.Ethics and dissemination The sponsor is the Assistance Publique–Hôpitaux de Paris. The ECMOToP protocol version 2.1 was approved by Comité de Protection des Personnes Ile de France VIII. Results will be published in international peer-reviewed medical journals.Trial registration number NCT05664204.

Abstract: Background: Bioinformatics is becoming an essential tool for the majority of biological and biomedical researchers. Although bioinformatics data is exploited by academic and industrial researchers, limited focus is on teaching this area to undergraduates, postgraduates and senior scientists. Many scientists are developing their own expertise without formal training and often without appreciating the source of the data they are reliant upon. Some universities do provide courses on a variety of bioinformatics resources and tools, a few also provide biocuration projects, during which students submit data to annotation resources. Methods: To assess the usefulness and enjoyability of annotation projects a survey was sent to University College London (UCL) students who have undertaken Gene Ontology biocuration projects. Results: Analysis of survey responses suggest that these projects provide students with an opportunity not only to learn about bioinformatics resources but also to improve their literature analysis, presentation and writing skills. Conclusion: Biocuration student projects provide valuable annotations as well as enabling students to develop a variety of skills relevant to their future careers. It is also hoped that, as future scientists, these students will critically assess their own manuscripts and ensure that these are written with the biocurators of the future in mind.

Abstract: Although donor-specific anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies (DSAs) are frequently found in recipients after lung transplantation (LT), the characteristics of DSA which influence antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) in LT are not fully defined. We retrospectively analyzed 206 consecutive LT patients of our center (2010–2013). DSAs were detected by using luminex single antigen beads assay and mean fluorescence intensity was assessed. Within the study population, 105 patients had positive DSA. Patients with and without AMR (AMRPos, n = 22, and AMRNeg, n = 83, respectively) were compared. Abstract: International audience; Lung transplantation (LTx) is a steadily expanding field. The considerable developments have been driven over the years by indefatigable work conducted at LTx centers to improve donor and recipient selection, combined with multifaceted efforts to overcome challenges raised by the surgical procedure, perioperative care, and long-term medical complications. One consequence has been a pruning away of contraindications over time, which has, in some ways, complicated the patient selection process. The Francophone Pulmonology Society (Société de Pneumology de Langue Française, SPLF) set up a task force to produce up-to-date working guidelines designed to assist pulmonologists in managing end-stage respiratory insufficiency, determining which patients may be eligible for LTx, and appropriately timing LTx-center referral. The task force examined the most recent literature and evaluated the risk factors that limit patient survival after LTx. Ideally, the objectives of LTx are to prolong life while also improving quality of life. The guidelines developed by the task force apply to a limited resource and are consistent with the ethical principles described below.

9. Cumulative Incidence and Risk Factors for Severe COVID-19 in French People with Cystic Fibrosis

Abstract: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections are closely monitored in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF), with a special emphasis on severe cases. Previous studies used hospitalization rates as proxy for severity.We evaluated data from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases diagnosed in French pwCF followed in one of the 47 French CF center over the first year of the pandemic.criteria were applied for defining severity (e.g., respiratory failure and/or death). Data were compared to those from all French pwCF using the French CF Registry.As of April 30, 2021, 223 pwCF were diagnosed with COVID-19, with higher risks in adults (≥18 years, odds ratio [OR] = 2.52, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.82-3.48) and post-transplant individuals (OR = 2.68, 95% CI = 1.98-3.63). Sixty (26.9%) patients were hospitalized, with an increased risk in post-transplant individuals (OR = 4.74, 95% CI = 2.49-9.02). In 34 (15%) cases, COVID-19 was considered severe; 28/60 (46.7%) hospitalizations occurred in patients without objective criteria of severity. Severe cases occurred mostly in adults (85.3%) and post-transplant pwCF (61.8%, OR = 6.02, 95% CI = 2.77-13.06). In non-transplanted pwCF, risk factors for severity included low lung function (median ppFEV1 54.6% vs. 75.1%, OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.01-1.08) and CF-associated diabetes (OR = 3.26, 95% CI = 1.02-10.4). While most cases recovered without sequelae (n = 204, 91.5%), 16 (13%) were followed for possible sequelae, and three post-transplant females died.Severe COVID-19 cases occurred infrequently during the first year of the pandemic in French pwCF. Non-transplanted adults with severe respiratory disease or diabetes and post-transplant individuals were at risk for severe COVID-19. Thus, specific preventive measures should be proposed.

Abstract: The role of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) in Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases is still the subject of many studies. However, those studies using high-throughput methods have been compromised by the lack of Gene Ontology (GO) annotations describing the role of proteins in the normal function of the BBB. The GO Consortium provides a gold-standard bioinformatics resource used for analysis and interpretation of large biomedical data sets. However, the GO is also used by other research communities and, therefore, must meet a variety of demands on the breadth and depth of information that is provided. To meet the needs of the Alzheimer’s research community we have focused on the GO annotation of the BBB, with over 100 transport or junctional proteins prioritized for annotation. This project has led to a substantial increase in the number of human proteins associated with BBB-relevant GO terms as well as more comprehensive annotation of these proteins in many other processes. Furthermore, data describing the microRNAs that regulate the expression of these priority proteins have also been curated. Abstract: BackgroundPre-formed donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) are associated with worse outcome after lung transplantation (LTx) and might limit access to LTx. A virtual crossmatch-based strategy for perioperative desensitisation protocol has been used for immunised LTx candidates since 2012 at Foch Hospital (Suresnes, France). We compared the outcome of desensitised LTx candidates with high DSA mean fluorescence intensity and those with low or no pre-formed DSAs, not desensitised.MethodsFor all consecutive LTx recipients (January 2012 to March 2018), freedom from chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) and graft survival were assessed using Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox multivariate analysis.ResultsWe compared outcomes for desensitised patients with high pre-formed DSAs (n=39) and those with no (n=216) or low pre-formed DSAs (n=66). The desensitisation protocol decreased the level of immunodominant DSA (class I/II) at 1, 3 and 6 months post-LTx (pversus no DSAs; p=0.035) and CLAD with persistent DSAs (3.04, 1.02–9.17 versus no pre-formed DSAs; p=0.048).ConclusionThe desensitisation protocol in LTx recipients with high pre-formed DSAs was associated with satisfactory outcome, with cleared high pre-formed DSAs after desensitisation identified as an independent predictor of graft survival.

Abstract: Background: Bioinformatics is becoming an essential tool for the majority of biological and biomedical researchers. Although bioinformatics data is exploited by academic and industrial researchers, limited focus is on teaching this area to undergraduates, postgraduates and senior scientists. Many scientists are developing their own expertise without formal training and often without appreciating the source of the data they are reliant upon. Some universities do provide courses on a variety of bioinformatics resources and tools, a few also provide biocuration projects, during which students submit data to annotation resources. Methods: To assess the usefulness and enjoyability of annotation projects a survey was sent to University College London (UCL) students who have undertaken Gene Ontology biocuration projects. Results: Analysis of survey responses suggest that these projects provide students with an opportunity not only to learn about bioinformatics resources but also to improve their literature analysis, presentation and writing skills. Conclusion: Biocuration student projects provide valuable annotations as well as enabling students to develop a variety of skills relevant to their future careers. It is also hoped that, as future scientists, these students will critically assess their own manuscripts and ensure that these are written with the biocurators of the future in mind.

Abstract: International audience; Rationale: Lumacaftor-ivacaftor is a CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) modulator combination recently approved for patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) homozygous for the Phe508del mutation.Objectives: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of lumacaftor-ivacaftor in adolescents (≥12 yr) and adults (≥18 yr) in a real-life postapproval setting.Methods: The study was conducted in the 47 CF reference centers in France. All patients who initiated lumacaftor-ivacaftor from January 1 to December 31, 2016, were eligible. Patients were evaluated for lumacaftor-ivacaftor safety and effectiveness over the first year of treatment following the French CF Learning Society's recommendations.Measurements and Main Results: Among the 845 patients (292 adolescents and 553 adults) who initiated lumacaftor-ivacaftor, 18.2% (154 patients) discontinued treatment, often owing to respiratory (48.1%, 74 patients) or nonrespiratory (27.9%, 43 patients) adverse events. In multivariable logistic regression, factors associated with increased rates of discontinuation included adult age group, percent predicted FEV1 (ppFEV1) less than 40%, and numbers of intravenous antibiotic courses during the year before lumacaftor-ivacaftor initiation. Patients with continuous exposure to lumacaftor-ivacaftor showed an absolute increase in ppFEV1 (+3.67%), an increase in body mass index (+0.73 kg/m2), and a decrease in intravenous antibiotic courses by 35%. Patients who discontinued treatment had significant decrease in ppFEV1, without improvement in body mass index or decrease in intravenous antibiotic courses.Conclusions: Lumacaftor-ivacaftor was associated with improvement in lung disease and nutritional status in patients who tolerated treatment. Adults who discontinued lumacaftor-ivacaftor, often owing to adverse events, were found at high risk of clinical deterioration.

Abstract: Viral infections are known to lead to serious respiratory complications in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Hypothesizing that CF patients were a population at high risk for severe respiratory complications from SARS-CoV-2 infection, we conducted a national study to describe the clinical expression of COVID-19 in French CF patients. This prospective observational study involves all 47 French CF centers caring for approximately 7500 CF patients. Between March 1st and June 30th 2020, 31 patients were diagnosed with COVID-19: 19 had positive SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR in nasopharyngeal swabs, 1 had negative RT-PCR but typical COVID-19 signs on a CT scan, and 11 had positive SARS-CoV-2 serology. Fifteen were males, median (range) age was 31 (9&ndash, 60) years, and 12 patients were living with a lung transplant. The majority of the patients had CF-related diabetes (n = 19, 61.3%), and a mild lung disease (n = 19, 65%, with percent-predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (ppFEV1) &gt, 70). Three (10%) patients remained asymptomatic. For the 28 (90%) patients who displayed symptoms, most common symptoms at admission were fever (n = 22, 78.6%), fatigue (n = 14, 50%), and increased cough (n = 14, 50%). Nineteen were hospitalized (including 11 out of the 12 post-lung transplant patients), seven required oxygen therapy, and four (3 post-lung transplant patients) were admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Ten developed complications (including acute respiratory distress syndrome in two post-lung transplant patients), but all recovered and were discharged home without noticeable short-term sequelae. Overall, French CF patients were rarely diagnosed with COVID-19. Further research should establish whether they were not infected or remained asymptomatic upon infection. In diagnosed cases, the short-term evolution was favorable with rare acute respiratory distress syndrome and no death. Post-lung transplant patients had more severe outcomes and should be monitored more closely.

Abstract: The role of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) in Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases is still the subject of many studies. However, those studies using high-throughput methods have been compromised by the lack of Gene Ontology (GO) annotations describing the role of proteins in the normal function of the BBB. The GO Consortium provides a gold-standard bioinformatics resource used for analysis and interpretation of large biomedical data sets. However, the GO is also used by other research communities and, therefore, must meet a variety of demands on the breadth and depth of information that is provided. To meet the needs of the Alzheimer's research community we have focused on the GO annotation of the BBB, with over 100 transport or junctional proteins prioritized for annotation. This project has led to a substantial increase in the number of human proteins associated with BBB-relevant GO terms as well as more comprehensive annotation of these proteins in many other processes. Furthermore, data describing the microRNAs that regulate the expression of these priority proteins have also been curated. Abstract: Lung transplantation is the definitive treatment for terminal respiratory disease, but the associated mortality rate is high. Acute rejection of the transplanted lung is a key determinant of adverse prognosis. Furthermore, an epidemiological relationship has been established between the occurrence of acute lung rejection and cytomegalovirus infection. However, the reasons for this association remain unclear. Here, we performed a longitudinal characterization of CMV-specific T-cell responses and immune activation status in the peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of forty-four lung transplant patients. Acute rejection was associated with high levels of cellular activation in the periphery, reflecting strong CMV-specific CD8(+) T-cell activity post-transplant. Peripheral and lung CMV-specific CD8(+) T-cell responses were very similar, and related to the presence of CMV in the transplanted organ. These findings support that activated CMV-specific CD8(+) T-cells in the lung may play a role in promoting acute rejection.

Abstract: Background Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is common in patients with HIV infection but may also occur in patients with other causes of immunodeficiency, including hematologic and solid malignancies. Methods To better describe the clinical picture of PCP as to maintain a high level of suspicion in adequate cases, we studied 56 cancer patients with PCP and compared them to 56 cancer patients with bacterial pneumonia. Results Among 56 PCP patients, 44 patients (78.6%) had hematologic malignancies (18 recipients of bone marrow transplantation) and 12 patients had solid tumors. The time since diagnosis was 24 months (range, 4 to 49 months). All patients with solid tumors and 20 patients (45.4%) with hematologic malignancies were receiving steroids. Only six patients were receiving PCP prophylaxis. The main symptoms were fever (85.7%), dyspnea (78.6%), and cough (57.1%). Time from symptom onset was 7 days (range, 3 to 14 days). PCP presented as severe pneumonia (Pa o 2 , 58 mm Hg [range, 50 to 70 mm Hg]) with bilateral interstitial infiltrates (80.4%) and bilateral ground-glass attenuation (89.3%) by CT. Of the 24 ICU patients (42.9%), 16 patients (19.6%) required mechanical ventilation. Eleven patients (19.6%) died. Compared to 56 patients with bacterial pneumonia, PCP patients were more likely to have non-Hodgkin lymphoma and be receiving long-term steroids; they had longer times since diagnosis, longer symptom duration, higher frequencies of fever and of diffuse lung disease (diffuse crackles, bilateral infiltrates, and hypoxemia), higher frequency of ground-glass opacities, and lower frequency of pleural involvement. Conclusions PCP presents as subacute, febrile, hypoxemic, and diffuse pulmonary involvement in patients with solid tumors or hematologic malignancies receiving long-term steroids.

Abstract: Summary Many candidates for lung transplantation (LT) die on the waiting list, raising the question of graft availability and strategy for organ allocation. We report the experience of the new organ allocation program, “High Emergency Lung Transplantation” (HELT), since its implementation in our center in 2007. Retrospective analysis of 201 lung transplant patients, of whom 37 received HELT from 1st July 2007 to 31th May 2012. HELT candidates had a higher impairment grade on respiratory status and higher Lung Allocation Score (LAS). HELT patients had increased incidence of perioperative complications (e.g., perioperative bleeding) and extracorporeal circulatory assistance (75% vs. 36.6%, P = 0.0005). No significant difference was observed between HELT and non-HELT patients in mechanical ventilation duration (15.5 days vs. 11 days, P = 0.27), intensive care unit length of stay (15 days vs. 10 days, P = 0.22) or survival rate at 12 (81% vs. 80%), and 24 months post-LT (72.9% vs. 75.0%). Lastly, mortality on the waiting list was spectacularly reduced from 19% to 2% when compared to the non-HELT 2004–2007 group. Despite a more severe clinical status of patients on the waiting list, HELT provided similar results to conventional LT. These results were associated with a dramatic reduction in the mortality rate of patients on the waiting list.

Abstract: Purpose To evaluate the outcome of cancer patients considered for admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients and Methods Prospective, one-year hospital-wide study of all cancer and hematology patients, including bone marrow transplantation patients, for whom admission to the ICU was requested. Results Of the 206 patients considered for ICU admission, 105 patients (51%) were admitted. Of the 101 patients who were not admitted, 54 patients (26.2%) were considered too sick to benefit, and 47 patients (22.8%) were considered to be too well to benefit from the ICU. Of these 47 patients, 13 patients were admitted later. Survival rates after 30 and 180 days were significantly associated with admission status (P < .0001). Remission of the malignancy (odds ratio [OR], 3.37; 95% CI, 1.25 to 9.07) was independently associated with ICU admission, whereas poor chronic health status (OR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.16 to 0.74) and solid tumor (OR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.78) were associated with ICU refusal. In admitted patients, 30-day and 6-month survival rates were 54.3% and 32.4%, respectively. Of the patients considered too sick to benefit from ICU admission, 26% were alive on day 30 and 16.7% on day 180. Among patients considered too well to benefit, the 30-day survival rate was a worrisome 78.7%. Calibration of the Mortality Probability Model (the only score available at triage) was of limited value for predicting 30-day survival (area under the curve, 0.62). Conclusion Both the excess mortality in too-well patients later admitted to the ICU and the relatively good survival in too-sick patients suggest the need for a broader admission policy.

Abstract: International audience; Introduction: ICU admission is required in more than 25% of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at some time during the course of the disease. However, only limited information is available on how physicians communicate with COPD patients about ICU admission. Methods: COPD patients and relatives from 19 French ICUs were interviewed at ICU discharge about their knowledge of COPD. French pulmonologists self-reported their practices for informing and discussing intensive care treatment preferences with COPD patients. Finally, pulmonologists and ICU physicians reported barriers and facilitators for transfer of COPD patients to the ICU and to propose invasive mechanical ventilation. Results: Self-report questionnaires were filled in by 126 COPD patients and 102 relatives, and 173 pulmonologists and 135 ICU physicians were interviewed. For 41% (n = 39) of patients and 54% (n = 51) of relatives, ICU admission had never been expected prior to admission. One half of patients were not routinely informed by their pulmonologist about possible ICU admission at some time during the course of COPD. Moreover, treatment options (that is, non-invasive ventilation, intubation and mechanical ventilation or tracheotomy) were not explained to COPD patients during regular pulmonologist visits. Pulmonologists and ICU physician have different perceptions of the decision-making process pertaining to ICU admission and intubation. Conclusions: The information provided by pulmonologists to patients and families concerning the prognosis of COPD, the risks of ICU admission and specific care could be improved in order to deliver ICU care in accordance with the patient's personal values and preferences. Given the discrepancies in the decision-making process between pulmonologists and intensivists, a more collaborative approach should probably be discussed.

Abstract: This investigation was conducted to compare the soil ant fauna of an eucalypt plantation to that of a second growth forest; both áreas located in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Tuna fish, honey and cracker baits were used to collect ants along a transect and pitfall traps were distributed in central 900 m of each site. A total of 64 species belonging to 26 genera were collected in the 12 weekly samples; 54 species were captured in the forest and 45 in the Eucalypíus granais plantation. A total of eight species presented frequencies above 10% in at least one area. Species richness was higher in the second growth forest. Additional studies should be considcred for further generalizations of the results.

Abstract: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is the main reason for ICU admission in patients with haematological malignancies. High mortality rates of up to 50% are reported in this situation, and mortality is highest when mechanical ventilation is needed. Rapid and accurate diagnostic methods are needed in these vulnerable patients to ensure the prompt initiation of effective treatment. However, the broad array of possible cause of ARF raises diagnostic challenges. In this review, we discuss the DIRECT strategy, which identifies the most plausible diagnosis in each patient based on the type of immune deficiency and clinical presentation. We will focus on non-invasive laboratory tests developed in recent years, discussing their sensitivity and specificity. We also discuss the usefulness in cancer patients with specific organ dysfunctions of biomarkers introduced over the past few years.

Abstract: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of symptoms of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder-related symptoms in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and their relatives after an intensive care unit stay.Prospective multicenter study.Nineteen French intensive care units.One hundred twenty-six patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who survived an intensive care unit stay and 102 relatives.None.Patients and relatives were interviewed at intensive care unit discharge and 90 days later to assess symptoms of anxiety and depression using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and posttraumatic stress disorder-related symptoms using the Impact of Event Scale (IES). At intensive care unit discharge, 90% of patients recollected traumatic psychological events in the intensive care unit. At day 90, we were able to conduct telephone interviews with 53 patients and 47 relatives. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale scores indicated symptoms of anxiety and depression in 52% and 45.5% of patients at intensive care unit discharge and in 28.3% and 18.9% on day 90, respectively. Corresponding prevalence in relatives were 72.2% and 25.7% at intensive care unit discharge and 40.4% and 14.9% on day 90, respectively. The Impact of Event Scale indicated posttraumatic stress disorder-related symptoms in 20.7% of patients and 29.8% of relatives on day 90. Peritraumatic dissociation assessed using the Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire was independently associated with posttraumatic stress disorder-related symptoms in the patients and relatives. Previous intensive care unit experience and recollection of bothersome noise in the intensive care unit predicted posttraumatic stress disorder-related symptoms in the patients.Psychiatric symptoms were found to be common in a group of 126 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who survived an intensive care unit stay and their relatives at intensive care unit discharge and 90 days later. Peritraumatic dissociation at intensive care unit discharge was found to independently predict posttraumatic stress disorder-related symptoms in this sample of patients and relatives.

Abstract: Patients with newly diagnosed cancer responsible for organ failures may require intensive care unit (ICU) admission and immediate chemotherapy. Outcomes in this population have not been studied.Prospective observational cohort study.Teaching hospital.All patients admitted to the ICU, from January 1997 to June 2003, for organ failures due to newly diagnosed, untreated cancer and deemed necessary to receive immediate cancer chemotherapy.None.For the period of 6.5 yrs, 100 patients met the study criteria: 43 had acute leukemia, 37 lymphoma, and 12 solid tumors. Median Simplified Acute Physiology Score II was 39 (30-48) points, and median Logistic Organ Dysfunction score was 5 (3-7) points. Three variables were independently associated with 30-day mortality: need for vasopressor therapy (odds ratio, 6.01; 95% confidence interval, 1.86-19.4), mechanical ventilation (odds ratio, 6.36; 95% confidence interval, 1.76-22.94); and hepatic failure (odds ratio, 7.76; 95% confidence interval, 1.25-48.27). Overall survival was 60% after 30 days and 49% after 180 days.Mortality was chiefly dependent on the nature and number of organ failures, not on the nature or stage of the malignancy. The 30-day and 180-day survival rates indicate that, in this selected group of patients, advanced disease at cancer diagnosis should not lead to refusal of ICU admission. Moreover, administration of chemotherapy in the intensive care unit is feasible, and although the mortality rate is high, routine ICU admission of patients with newly diagnosed cancer, specific organ failure, and the need for administration of chemotherapy in the ICU deserves evaluation.

Abstract: This investigation was conducted to compare the soil ant fauna of an eucalypt plantation to that of a second growth forest; both áreas located in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Tuna fish, honey and cracker baits were used to collect ants along a transect and pitfall traps were distributed in central 900 m of each site. A total of 64 species belonging to 26 genera were collected in the 12 weekly samples; 54 species were captured in the forest and 45 in the Eucalypíus granais plantation. A total of eight species presented frequencies above 10% in at least one area. Species richness was higher in the second growth forest. Additional studies should be considcred for further generalizations of the results.
