Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare and devastating disease. New disease-modifying treatments have recently been approved and early treatment has been related to a better outcome. In this context, several newborn screening (NBS) programs have been implemented. The aim of the study was to obtain a global overview on the current situation and perspectives on SMA NBS. We conducted a survey and contacted experts from 152 countries, from which we gathered 87 responses. We identified 9 SMA NBS programs that have so far detected 288 newborns with SMA out of 3,674,277 newborns screened. Funding, screening methods, organisation, and consent process were variable between SMA NBS programs. Many respondents pointed the lack of cost/benefit data as a major obstacle to SMA NBS implementation. In the next four years, our data suggest a 24% coverage of newborns from countries where a disease-modifying drug is available and 8,5% coverage in countries with no diseases-modifying drugs. The annual proportion of newborns to be screened in the coming years is expected to increase steadily. The experts expressed a strong need for the implementation of SMA NBS as means to improve care for patients with SMA.

Resumen Objetivo: Identificar los eventos adversos (EA) reportados por enfermería en algunas unidades de cuidado intensivo (UCI) en Bogotá (Colombia). Método: Se desarrolló un estudio descriptivo, prospectivo. El tamaño de la muestra correspondió a 525pacientes, durante un periodo de 6 meses. El tipo de muestreo fue por criterio; participaron de forma voluntaria 3 instituciones de salud en Bogotá. Para recolectar información se utilizó un formulario digital on-line. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo con distribución de frecuencias absolutas y relativas, utilizando el programa estadístico SPSS Statistics 23.0, versión 2014. Resultados: Se reportaron 594 eventos adversos presentados en 525 pacientes. Los relacionados con el cuidado enfermero ocuparon el primer lugar (38,7 %), seguido del manejo de la vía aérea y la ventilación mecánica (16,1 %) y el manejo de accesos vasculares, sondas y drenajes (14,8 %) y la infección asociada al cuidado (12,6 %). La ocurrencia de estos eventos adversos predominó en hombres con edad promedio de 64,5 años, en unidades de cuidado intensivo médicas, en el turno de la noche y con un TISS-28 de 20-39 puntos. Conclusiones: Los eventos adversos reportados en el estudio que presentan mayor prevalen-cia están relacionados en su mayoría con el cuidado directo al paciente y el de vía aérea; al ser prevenibles indican que se presentaron por alteración en el cumplimiento de los estándares del cuidado. Abstract Objective: To identify adverse events (AEs) reported by nursing in some intensive care units (ICU) in Bogota. Method: A descriptive, prospective study was developed. The size of the sample consisted of 525 patients over a period of 6 months. The sampling was by convenience, participated voluntarily three health institutions in the city of Bogota. To collect information, digital form on-line. Data was analyzed with SPSS Statistics 23.0, version 2014. Results: 594 reported adverse events in 525patients, related care nurse ranked first (38.7%), followed by airway management and mechanical ventilation (16.1%) and management of vascular access, probes and drains (14.8 %) and infection associated with care (12.6%). the occurrence of these adverse events predominated in men with an average age of 64.5 years in medical intensive care units, on the night shift with a 20-39 TISS-28 points. Conclusions: Adverse Events reported in the present study are more prevalent mostly related to direct patient care and airway, being preventable, was presented they indicate that alteration in compliance with standards of care.

Purpose: Explore what spiritual care means to nurses who work in emergency care units. Design and Method: Nine nursing professionals from an emergency care unit at a private health institution affiliated with the Universidad de La Sabana participated in this descriptive qualitative study. Nonparticipant observation, field notes, and in-depth interviews with a question guide were used to collect the data, which were analyzed by means of content analysis. Results: Three themes and their corresponding subthemes were identified with respect to the significance of spiritual care: (1) interpretation of spiritual care, (2) the patient and the family in spiritual care, and (3) the role of the nurse in spiritual care. Conclusions: These findings provide a deeper understanding of spiritual care in terms of its significance. They also acknowledge its importance to nursing practice in emergency care units. The significance of spiritual care is based on theoretical, scientific, and humanistic points of reference (the discipline of nursing) that strengthen the therapeutic relationship between the patient/family–nurse dyad. The study also offers evidence for holistic nursing practice that requires theoretical-academic, administrative, and assistance support.

Este trabajo nace de la necesidad latente de contar nuestras propias historias y experiencias. Urge transmitir enriquecedores quehaceres de los arquitectos colombianos. El articulo presenta un resumen del capitulo correspondiente a la introduccion de la vida delarquitecto, donde se realiza una exposicion de modo preliminar al desarrollo del analisis de los proyectos y obras, de los acontecimientos que durante su vida han influido en sus procesos de diseno urbano - arquitectonicos. Se emplea la cronologia desde su infancia, pasando por su periodo de formacion academica hasta la edad adulta y su actividad profesional. El estudio de la vida del arquitecto aporta metodologicamente a la comprension de la obra, tras el planteamiento de preguntas como: ?De que modo se ha llegado a esos resultados? ?Como ha aportado e influido el entorno construido de forma inconsciente y no intencionada? ?Como se valora el tejido urbano en el que crece y que papel desempenan las edificaciones tradicionales e historicas de la ciudad? ?Cuales relaciones improbables a primera vista quedan demostradas si comparamos fotografias de edificios y contextos con su obra? ?Como encuentra su propio camino mirando al pasado y su historia? La introduccion pretende vislumbrar posturas, configurando un catalogo de la vida y obra como componentes indisolubles en el estudio. ABSTRACT This work is born from the latent need to explain our own histories and experiences. The main idea is give facts of the colombian architects. The article presents the corresponding chapter to the Introduction of the architect´s life, doing an exposition of the happenings that have influenced in his urban and architectonical design. The chronology begins from his infancy, then talks about his period of academic training, until the adulthood and his professional activity. The study of the architect’s life contributes methodologically to the understanding of his work, after asking questions such as: How have those results been reached? How has the built environment contributed and influenced unconsciously and unintentionally? How is the urban fabric in which he grows valued and what is the role of the traditional and historical buildings in the city? What improbable relationships at first sight are demonstratedby comparing photographs of buildings and contexts with his work? How does he find his own way looking to the past and its history? The introduction intends to glimpse positions, forming a catalog of his life and work, as inseparable components in the study.
