8. Evaluation and Opportunities in Overtraining Approaches

Abstract

Overtraining (OT) as a sports phenomenon can be caused by stressors on various levels (physical, emotional, psychological, and social) and evokes responses on these levels. This study evaluated research and new opportunities in the field of OT by introducing an integrated multidisciplinary approach, based on the single and multistressors approach. The single stressor approach focuses on the training load-recovery imbalance, which results in a stagnating performance, excluding the etiology by nonsport-related factors. The multistressors approach includes all factors as relevant in the etiology of a stagnating performance. In future studies on OT, an integrative approach should not only highlight changes in training regimes and specific responses to training stressors but also focus on the role of training-related recovery, the impact of stressors, and personality factors influencing stress appraisal. This will provide a better insight into the etiology and consequences of OT, necessary for prevention and treatment in sport practice, and enhance the focus on adequate recovery (good sleep, sufficient rest periods) and athletes' stress-related responses.

Abstract

In this study, the solidus curve of the Cd0.8Zn0.2Te homogeneity range was constructed from the partial pressure measurements by optical absorption measurements which provided the information of the melt-growth parameters to achieve crystals with the required electrical resistivity. The melt growth of Cd0.8Zn0.2Te crystals was then processed by directional solidification under controlled Cd overpressure. During the growth experiments, several procedures have been developed to improve the crystalline quality: (1) reducing the structural defects from wetting by HF etching of fused silica ampoule, (2) minimizing the contamination of impurities during homogenization, (3) promoting single-crystal growth by mechanical pulsed disturbance, and (4) maximizing electrical resistivity and minimizing Te precipitates by controlling Cd overpressure during growth and post-growth cooling. Additionally, the thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient of a vapor-grown CdTe and two melt-grown Cd0.8Zn0.2Te crystals were measured between 190 °C and 780 °C to provide an in-depth understanding of the thermal and electrical conduction mechanisms of the crystals as well as the prospect of its thermoelectric applications.

14. Monitoring load, recovery, and performance in young elite soccer players

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between training load, recovery, and monthly field test performance in young elite soccer players to develop training guidelines to enhance performance. In a prospective, non-experimental cohort design, 18 young elite soccer players registered training and match duration for a full competitive season by means of daily training logs. Furthermore, session rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and total quality of recovery (TQR) scores were recorded. Weekly duration ([TL.sub.d]), load (duration x session RPE = [TL.sup.rpe]), and TQR scores were calculated for 1 and 2 weeks before a monthly submaximal interval shuttle run tests to determine interval endurance capacity. Participants spent on average 394.4 [+ or -] 134.9 minutes per week on training and game play with an average session RPE of 14.4 [+ or -] 1.2 (somewhat hard) and TQR of 14.7 [+ or -] 1.3 (good recovery). Random intercept models showed that every extra hour training or game play resulted in enhanced field test performance (p < 0.05). Session RPE and TQR scores did not contribute to the prediction of performance. The duration of training and game play in the week before field test performance is most strongly related to interval endurance capacity. Therefore, coaches should focus on training duration to improve interval endurance capacity in elite soccer players. To evaluate the group and individual training response, field tests should be frequently executed and be incorporated in the training program. Abstract

We present an account of flower-feeding by 2 species of mydas flies in Florida. We observed adults of Mydas clavatus and Mydas maculiventris feeding on flowers of both typical and unusually large (tree-form) Licania michauxii (Gopher Apple; Chrysobalanaceae). We also observed M. maculiventris feeding on flowers of Serenoa repens (Saw Palmetto; Arecaceae) in Florida scrub habitat. We discuss these observations following a brief review of feeding ecology in mydids, and include a checklist of the 12 known Florida mydids with a summary of our current knowledge of adult feeding in these species. We also provide additional sites of tree-form Gopher Apple in Martin County, FL, with a discussion of this unique form and the location of a new record-size specimen in Jonathan Dickinson State Park.

Abstract

The viscosity of high temperature Te melt was measured using a new technique in which a rotating magnetic field was applied to the melt sealed in a suspended ampoule, and the torque exerted by rotating melt flow on the ampoule wall was measured. Governing equations for the coupled melt flow and ampoule torsional oscillation were solved, and the viscosity was extracted from the experimental data by numerical fitting. The computational result showed good agreement with experimental data. The melt velocity transient initiated by the rotating magnetic field reached a stable condition quickly, allowing the viscosity and electrical conductivity of the melt to be determined in a short period.

Abstract

Martinelline (1) and martinellic acid (2), two pyrroloquinoline alkaloids, are separated from an organic extract of Martinella iquitosensis roots which are used in eye medication. The compounds 1 and 2 express the only nonpeptide natural products resembling bradykinin (BK) receptor antagonists. The ring juncture in 1 has a cis geometry. 1 reacts with BK B1 and B2, alpha-1-adrenergic and muscarinic receptors.

45. Impurity Studies of Cd(0.8)Zn(0.2)Te Crystals Using Photoluminescence and Glow Discharge Mass Spectroscopy

Abstract

Cd(1-x)Zn(x)Te semiconductor crystal is a highly promising material for room temperature x- and gamma-ray detector applications because of its high resistivity, long carrier lifetime, and relatively high hole and electron mobilities. This paper reports the investigation of the impurities in several Cd(1-x)Zn(x)Te (x = 0.20) crystals grown using the vertical Bridgman method under a Cd overpressure. The impurity concentrations were measured using glow discharge mass spectroscopy (GDMS). The energy states of the impurities were studied using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at liquid helium temperature. The PL spectra showed a series of sharp high energy lines which are associated with free excitons and excitons bound to impurities as donors and acceptors in the crystals. The impurities also contributed to donor-acceptor pair recombination. The correlation between the GDMS and PL results will be reported.

46. Thermal Conductivity Based on Modified Laser Flash Measurement

Abstract

The laser flash method is a standard method for thermal diffusivity measurement. It employs single-pulse heating of one side of a thin specimen and measures the temperature response of the other side. The thermal diffusivity of the specimen can be obtained based on a one-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis. This paper reports the development of a theory that includes a transparent reference layer with known thermal property attached to the back of sample. With the inclusion of heat conduction from the sample to the reference layer in the theoretical analysis, the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of sample can be extracted from the temperature response data. Furthermore, a procedure is established to select two points from the data to calculate these properties. The uncertainty analysis indicates that this method can be used with acceptable levels of uncertainty.

47. Thermophysical and Optical Properties of Semiconducting Ga2Te3 Melt

Abstract

The majority of bulk semiconductor single crystals are presently grown from their melts. The thermophysical and optical properties of the melts provide a fundamental understanding of the melt structure and can be used to optimize the growth conditions to obtain higher quality crystals. In this paper, we report several thermophysical and optical properties for Ga2Te3 melts, such as electrical conductivity, viscosity, and optical transmission for temperatures ranging from the melting point up to approximately 990 C. The conductivity and viscosity of the melts are determined using the transient torque technique. The optical transmission of the melts is measured between the wavelengths of 300 and 2000 nm by an dual beam reversed-optics spectrophotometer. The measured properties are in good agreement with the published data. The conductivities indicate that the Ga2Te3 melt is semiconductor-like. The anomalous behavior in the measured properties are used as an indication of a structural transformation in the Ga2Te3 melt and discussed in terms of Eyring's and Bachinskii's predicted behaviors for homogeneous melts.

Abstract

Viscosity is a good indicator of structural changes for complex liquids, such as semiconductor melts with chain or ring structures. This paper discusses the theoretical and experimental results of the transient torque technique for non-intrusive viscosity measurement. Such a technique is essential for the high temperature viscosity measurement of high pressure and toxic semiconductor melts. In this paper, our previous work on oscillating cup technique was expanded to the transient process of a magnetically driven melt flow in a damped oscillation system. Based on the analytical solution for the fluid flow and cup oscillation, a semi-empirical model was established to extract the fluid viscosity. The analytical and experimental results indicated that such a technique has the advantage of short measurement time and straight forward data analysis procedures
