We analyze neutral atom Rydberg $C_Z$ gates based on adiabatic pulses applied symmetrically to both atoms. Analysis with smooth pulse shapes and Cs atom parameters predicts the gates can create Bell states with fidelity ${\mathcal F}>0.999$ using adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) pulses. With globally optimized adiabatic pulse shapes, in a two-photon excitation process, we generate Bell states with fidelity ${\mathcal F}=0.997$. The analysis fully accounts for spontaneous emission from intermediate and Rydberg states, including the Rydberg lifetime in a room temperature environment, but does not include errors arising from laser noise. We show that waveguides with a dielectric core and a lossy metamaterial cladding (metamaterial-dielectric guides) can support hybrid ordinary-surface modes previously only known for metal-dielectric waveguides. These hybrid modes are potentially useful for frequency filtering applications as sharp changes in field attenuation occur at tailorable frequencies. Our results also show that the surface modes of a metamaterial-dielectric waveguide with comparable electric and magnetic losses can be less lossy than the surface modes of an analogous metal-dielectric waveguide with electric losses alone. Through a characterization of both slab and cylindrical metamaterial-dielectric guides, we find that the surface modes of the cylindrical guides show promise as candidates for all-optical control of low-intensity pulses., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. We theoretically characterize the collective radiative behaviour of N classical emitters near an interface between different dielectrics that supports the transfer of surface plasmon modes into the far-field of electromagnetic radiation. The phenomena of superradiance and surface plasmons can be combined to amplify the emitted radiation intensity S as S= A N^2 S_0 compared to a single emitter's intensity S_0 in free space. For a practical case study within the paper A=240, compared to A=1 in free space. We furthermore demonstrate that there are collective modes for which the intensity of the emitted radiation is suppressed by two orders of magnitude despite their supperadiant emission characteristics. A method to control the emission characteristics of the system and to switch from super- to sub-radiant behaviour with a suitably detuned external driving field is devised., Comment: to appear in Phys. Quantum memory is important to quantum information processing in many ways: a synchronization device to match various processes within a quantum computer, an identity quantum gate that leaves any state unchanged, and a tool to convert heralded photons to photons-on-demand. In addition to quantum computing, quantum memory would be instrumental for the implementation of long-distance quantum communication using quantum repeaters. The importance of this basic quantum gate is exemplified by the multitude of optical quantum memory mechanisms being studied: optical delay lines, cavities, electromagnetically-induced transparency, photon-echo, and off-resonant Faraday interaction. Here we report on the state-of-the-art in the field of optical quantum memory, including criteria for successful quantum memory and current performance levels., Comment: This is the original version of the review paper published in Nature Photonics. We introduce history-dependent discrete-time quantum random walk models by adding uncorrelated memory terms and also by modifying Hamiltonian of the walker to include couplings with memory-keeping agents. We next numerically study the correlation effects in these models. We also propose a correlation exponent as a relevant and promising tool for investigation of correlation or memory (hence non-Markovian) effects. We construct a scheme for the preparation, pairwise entanglement via exchange interaction, manipulation, and measurement of individual group-II-like neutral atoms (Yb, Sr, etc.). Group-II-like atoms proffer important advantages over alkali metals, including long-lived optical-transition qubits that enable fast manipulation and measurement. We establish a rigorous quantitative connection between (i) the interferometric duality relation for which-way information and fringe visibility and (ii) Heisenberg's uncertainty relation for position and modular momentum. The quantum marginal problem asks what local spectra are consistent with a given spectrum of a joint state of a composite quantum system. This setting, also referred to as the question of the compatibility of local spectra, has several applications in quantum information theory. Here, we introduce the analogue of this statement for Gaussian states for any number of modes, and solve it in generality, for pure and mixed states, both concerning necessary and sufficient conditions. Formally, our result can be viewed as an analogue of the Sing-Thompson Theorem (respectively Horn's Lemma), characterizing the relationship between main diagonal elements and singular values of a complex matrix: We find necessary and sufficient conditions for vectors (d1, ..., dn) and (c1, ..., cn) to be the symplectic eigenvalues and symplectic main diagonal elements of a strictly positive real matrix, respectively. More physically speaking, this result determines what local temperatures or entropies are consistent with a pure or mixed Gaussian state of several modes. We find that this result implies a solution to the problem of sharing of entanglement in pure Gaussian states and allows for estimating the global entropy of non-Gaussian states based on local measurements. Implications to the actual preparation of multi-mode continuous-variable entangled states are discussed. In an open system, the geometric phase should be described by a distribution. We present two experimental schemes to perform continuous variable (2,3) threshold quantum secret sharing on the quadratures amplitudes of bright light beams. Both schemes require a pair of entangled light beams. The first scheme utilizes two phase sensitive optical amplifiers, whilst the second uses an electro-optic feedforward loop for the reconstruction of the secret. We examine the efficacy of quantum secret sharing in terms of fidelity, as well as the signal transfer coefficients and the conditional variances of the reconstructed output state. Entanglement, or quantum inseparability, is a crucial resource in quantum information applications, and therefore the experimental generation of separated yet entangled systems is of paramount importance. Experimental demonstrations of inseparability with light are not uncommon, but such demonstrations in physically well-separated massive systems, such as distinct gases of atoms, are new and present significant challenges and opportunities. Rigorous theoretical criteria are needed for demonstrating that given data are sufficient to confirm entanglement. Such criteria for experimental data have been derived for the case of continuous-variable systems obeying the Heisenberg-Weyl (position- momentum) commutator. To address the question of experimental verification more generally, we develop a sufficiency criterion for arbitrary states of two arbitrary systems. When applied to the recent study by Julsgaard, Kozhekin, and Polzik [Nature 413, 400 - 403 (2001)] of spin-state entanglement of two separate, macroscopic samples of atoms, our new criterion confirms the presence of spin entanglement., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

We investigate the difference between classical and quantum dynamics of coupled magnetic dipoles. We prove that in general the dynamics of the classical interaction Hamiltonian differs from the corresponding quantum model, regardless of the initial state. The difference appears as non positive-definite diffusion terms in the quantum evolution equation of an appropriate positive phase-space probability density. Thus, it is not possible to express the dynamics in terms of a convolution of a positive transition probability function and the initial condition as can be done in the classical case. We conclude that the dynamics is a quantum element of NMR quantum information processing. There are two limits where our quantum evolution coincide with the classical one: the short time limit before spin-spin interaction sets in and the long time limit when phase diffusion is incorporated., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review A

We show that photon coincidence spectroscopy can provide an unambiguous signature of two atoms simultaneously interacting with a quantised cavity field mode. We also show that the single-atom Jaynes-Cummings model can be probed effectively via photon coincidence spectroscopy, even with deleterious contributions to the signal from two-atom events. Photon coincidence spectroscopy is a promising technique for probing the nonlinear regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics in the optical domain, however its accuracy is mitigated by two factors: higher-order photon correlations, which contribute to an enhanced pair count rate, and non-simultaneity of emitted photon pairs from the optical cavity. We show that shifts in locations of two-photon coincidence spectral peaks, for a bichromatically-driven two-level atom passing through a single-mode cavity, are due to competition between excitation pathways for a Jaynes-Cummings system. We also discuss an analogous shift of (single-photon) spectral peaks for a driven three-level V-system, which demonstrates that competition between excitation pathways is also important in this simple system., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

It is shown that optical experimental tests of Bell inequality violations can be described by SU(1,1) transformations of the vacuum state, followed by photon coincidence detections. The set of all possible tests are described by various SU(1,1) subgroups of Sp(8,$\Bbb R$). In addition to establishing a common formalism for physically distinct Bell inequality tests, the similarities and differences of post--selected tests of Bell inequality violations are also made clear. A consequence of this analysis is that Bell inequality tests are performed on a very general version of SU(1,1) coherent states, and the theoretical violation of the Bell inequality by coincidence detection is calculated and discussed. We show how entangled qubits can be encoded as entangled coherent states of two-dimensional centre-of-mass vibrational motion for two ions in an ion trap. Photon coincidence spectroscopy relies on detecting multiphoton emissions from the combined atom-cavity system in atomic beam cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. These multiphoton emissions from the cavity are nearly simultaneous approximately on the cavity lifetime scale. We determine the optimal time for the detection window of photon pairs in two-photon coincidence spectroscopy. If the window time is too short, some photon pairs will not be detected; if the window time is too long, too many nearly coincident independent single photons will be falsely interpreted as being a photon pair. Theoretical methods for empirical state determination of entangled two-level systems are analyzed in relation to information theory. We show that hidden variable theories would lead to a Shannon index of correlation between the entangled subsystems which is larger that that predicted by quantum mechanics. Canonical representations which have maximal correlations are treated by the use of Schmidt decomposition of the entangled states, including especially the Bohm singlet state and the GHZ entangled states. We show that quantum mechanics does not violate locality, but does violate realism.

We extend the analysis of photon coincidence spectroscopy beyond bichromatic excitation and two-photon coincidence detection to include multichromatic excitation and multiphoton coincidence detection. Bases for SU(3) irreps are constructed on a space of three-particle tensor products of two-dimensional harmonic oscillator wave functions. The Weyl group is represented as the symmetric group of permutations of the particle coordinates of these space. Wigner functions for SU(3) are expressed as products of SU(2) Wigner functions and matrix elements of Weyl transformations.
