4. Maths Anxious Pre-Service Teachers' Perspectives of 'Doing' Mathematics in a Whiteboard Room

Abstract

Mathematics anxiety is common among pre-service primary teachers and many experience higher levels of maths anxiety than other university students. This study asks: What are maths anxious preservice teachers' perspectives of "doing" mathematics in a whiteboard room? The Abbreviated Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (A-MARS) was used to identify high, medium and low levels of maths anxiety in a cohort of first-year pre-service teachers (n=196). Semi-structured interviews (n=6) explored perspectives that were analysed through Vygotsky's sociocultural dimensions of the intrapersonal and the interpersonal, as well as the physical environment of the whiteboard room. Results show that doing maths in a whiteboard room was positive and engaging for participants because the room afforded positive interpersonal interactions and fostered an engaging learning environment that served to ease their maths anxiety. The whiteboard pedagogy is thus recommended in pre-service teacher education.

19. Joining the Research Conversation: Threshold Concepts Embedded in the Literature Review

Abstract

Doctoral education scholars associate doctoral learning with certain threshold concepts, many of which are embedded in the literature review. In considering this, we draw from a literary metaphor of 'joining the conversation' and report on a doctoral writing programme that blended elements of workshops, 'shut-up-and-write' sessions and thesis writing circles in the Faculty of Social Sciences at an Australian university. Findings illustrate conceptual thresholds engendered in the literature review. Study participants reported growing awareness of: the need for a critical voice; the difference between descriptive and critical writing; and, different ways to conduct and structure the literature review. Further, these are capacities and skills that develop iteratively over the candidature. To join the research conversation, gaining an understanding of these aspects of the conceptual threshold is important and, as indicated here, writing programmes that explicitly support this learning are vital to the process of scholarly development.

20. Therapeutic Function of Liraglutide for Mitigation of Blast-Induced Hearing Damage: An Initial Investigation in Animal Model of Chinchilla.

Abstract

Introduction Auditory injuries induced by repeated exposures to blasts reduce the operational performance capability and the life quality of military personnel. The treatment for blast-induced progressive hearing damage is lacking. We have recently investigated the therapeutic function of liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, to mitigate blast-induced hearing damage in the animal model of chinchilla, under different blast intensities, wearing earplugs (EPs) or not during blasts, and drug-treatment plan. The goal of this study was to investigate the therapeutical function of liraglutide by comparing the results obtained under different conditions. Materials and Methods Previous studies on chinchillas from two under-blast ear conditions (EP/open), two blast plans (G1: 6 blasts at 3–5 psi or G2:3 blasts at 15–25 psi), and three treatment plans (blast control, pre-blast drug treatment, and post-blast drug treatment) were summarized. The auditory brainstem response (ABR), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), and middle latency response (MLR) recorded within 14 days after the blasts were used. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of liraglutide under different conditions Results ABR threshold shifts indicated that the conditions of the EP and open ears were substantially different. Results from EP chinchillas indicated that the pre-blast treatment reduced the acute ABR threshold elevation on the day of blasts, and the significance of such an effect increased with the blast level. Liraglutide-treated open chinchillas showed lower ABR threshold shifts at the later stage of the experiment regardless of the blast levels. The DPOAE was less damaged after G2 blasts compared to G1 when pre-blast liraglutide was administrated. Lower post-blast MLR amplitudes were observed in the pre-blast treatment groups. Conclusions This study indicated that the liraglutide mitigated the blast-induced auditory injuries. In EP ears, the pre-blast administration of liraglutide reduced the severity of blast-induced acute damage in ears with EP protection, especially under G2. In animals with open ears, the effect of liraglutide on the restoration of hearing increased with time. The liraglutide potentially benefits post-blast hearing through multiple approaches with different mechanics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Making the transition to higher education was not an easy one and the transition itself has presented various other challenges and joys that I have been encouraged to share. Sharing my transition to teaching in higher education through this informal narrative begins with a very personal experience that is relevant as being a catalyst for the transition.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a major concern among American Indians and Hispanics. The Child Health Initiative for Lifelong Eating and Exercise (CHILE) is an evidence-based intervention to prevent obesity in children enrolled in 16 Head Start (HS) Centers in rural communities. The design and implementation of CHILE are described. Methods: CHILE uses a socioecological approach to improve dietary intake and increase physical activity. The intervention includes: a classroom curriculum; teacher and food service training; family engagement; grocery store participation; and health care provider support. Results: Lessons learned from CHILE include the need to consider availability of recommended foods; the necessity of multiple training sessions for teachers and food service; the need to tailor the family events to local needs; consideration of the pro?t needs of grocery stores; and sensitivity to the time constraints of health care providers. Conclusions: HS can play an important role in preventing obesity in children. CHILE is an example of a feasible intervention that addresses nutrition and physical activity for preschool children that can be incorporated into HS curricula and aligns with HS national performance standards.

40. Behavioral Profiles of Children with Epilepsy: Parent and Teacher Reports of Emotional, Behavioral, and Educational Concerns on the BASC-2

Abstract

The Behavior Assessment Scale for Children-Second Edition (BASC-2) was administered to 108 parents and 37 teachers of children with epilepsy (mean age of 10.6 years; 51% female, 49% male). Results demonstrated high mean scores on the Atypicality, Attention Problems, Withdrawal, and Adaptive Skills scales and a high percentage of At-Risk or Clinically Significant scores on the majority of scales. Ratings were correlated with level of functioning, age of onset, and number of antiepileptic medications. In addition, children with poor seizure control had higher ratings on the Depression, Somatization, and Withdrawal scales, and children with temporal lobe seizures had higher scores on the Depression scale. These results confirm a high rate of behavioral concerns in children with epilepsy. (Contains 3 tables.)

Abstract

This study examined the underlying constructs measured by the "Differential Ability Scales" ("DAS"; C.D. Elliott, 1990a) as they relate to the "Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) Theory" (K.S. McGrew, 1997) of cognitive abilities. The "DAS" and "Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities" ("WJ-III COG"; R.W.Woodcock, K.S. McGrew, & N. Mather, 2001) were administered to 131 children in grades 3 through 5 who took part in a concurrent validity study included in the "Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities, Third Edition," technical manual (K.S. McGrew & R.W. Woodcock, 2001). Confirmatory factor analyses using maximum likelihood estimation were conducted with the "AMOS 5.0" (J.L. Arbuckle, 2001) statistical program to evaluate three models of increasing complexity, to compare how well each fit the data set, and to identify the one that best described the underlying constructs measured by the "DAS." Results suggested that the synthesized "Three-Stratum CHC Model" provided the most parsimonious representation among the three models tested. (Contains 3 figures and 5 tables.)

42. Spatial analysis of birth center locations and service catchment areas in the contiguous United States: An application of Public Health Critical Race Praxis

Abstract

Objectives: Birth center care is associated with improved health for childbearing people of all racial or socioeconomic groups. Black people are underrepresented among birth center clientele and the midwifery workforce. This is troublesome given the legacy of Black midwives in the United States (US), who were systematically disenfranchised by the obstetrical field in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Applying Public Health Critical Race Praxis, the objectives of this dissertation research are to examine the distribution of birth center locations in the contiguous US, describe their service communities, and explore how structural racism (e.g., employment inequity) influences access to birth center care for Black childbearing people. Methods: Leveraging secondary data, this research applied spatial analytic methods to illustrate birth center locations and assess spatial clustering (i.e., global and local Moran’s I) of states and counties with birth centers. This dissertation also investigated the association between quantitative measures of structural racism and the presence of birth centers using multivariable logistic regression; and compared childbearing populations within birth center catchment areas to those outside. Results: Global Moran’s I testing indicated significant spatial autocorrelation of counties with birth centers, including by attribute (e.g., accreditation). Multivariable regression demonstrated significantly higher odds of birth center presence at the county level with increased racial segregation and increased racial inequity regarding educational attainment, controlling for population size and midwifery scope. Compared to childbearing populations outside, those within birth center catchment areas had significantly larger proportions identifying as Asian, Black, and Hispanic. 43. Learning during the Newborn's First Meal: Special Resistance to Retroactive Interference

Abstract

At their first postnatal meal, 3-hour-old rats learned an association between an odor and a sweet or bitter taste. Retention after a long interval or after associative interference was compared to that of 1-day-old rats. Despite equivalent and negligible effect of the long retention interval, contrary to infantile amnesia, newborns differed strikingly from 1-day-olds in susceptibility to associative interference. When lemon odor predicted saccharin in the first episode but quinine in the second, 1-day-olds had strong retroactive interference, but the newborn's first memory was unaffected by the second. The results were identical when the first memory was a lemon-quinine association and the second a lemon-saccharin association. It is uncertain whether this special robustness of memories associated with the first postnatal meal is best understood in terms of cognitive primacy or neurochemical and physiological consequences of the birth process.

Abstract

Background: Reports of physical activity (PA) measured via wrist-worn accelerometers in adolescents are limited. This study describes PA levels in adolescents at baseline of an obesity prevention and weight management trial. Methods: Adolescents (n = 930) at 8 high schools wore an accelerometer for 7 days, with average acceleration values of <50 mg, >150 mg, and >500 mg categorized as sedentary, moderate, and vigorous PA, respectively. In a 3-level mixed-effects generalized linear model, PA was regressed on sex, weight status, and day of week. Daily PA was nested within students, and students within schools, with random effects included for both. Results: Adolescents accumulated a median of 40 minutes daily of moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA). MVPA was significantly different for teens with obesity versus teens with normal weight (-5.4 min/d, P = .03); boys versus girls (16.3 min/d, P < .001); and Sundays versus midweek (-16.6 min/d, P < .001). Average sedentary time increased on weekends (Saturday: 19.1 min/d, P < .001; Sunday: 44.8 min, P < .001) relative to midweek but did not differ by sex or weight status. Conclusions: Interventions to increase PA in adolescents may benefit from focusing on increasing weekend PA and increasing MVPA in girls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
