English abstract: Consciousness-raising was an important element in the Women’s Liberation Movement. In this thesis I visit feminist archives from the 1970s to understand what impact consciousness-raising had in a Danish context. I show how the Danish translation of American and English guidelines for consciousness-raising groups influenced the organisation of Rødstrømpebevægelsen (The Red Stocking Movement) but also appeared in many literary works from the period. The ideal of consciousness-raising attributed value to women telling each other their stories and to collective work and had thereby impact on the feminist infrastructures that was built by activists and artists. Making a situated reading of Kvindernes bog (The Women’s Book) first published in 1972 by the artist, filmmaker, and writer Jytte Rex, and En serie af grundhæfter til brug i kvindekampen (A series of pamphlets to use in the Women’s Liberation Movement) that was produced by Redstockings in the years 1975-1978, I show how both production and reception of these written materials was influenced by these infrastructures. With a situated reading of these works I suggest that consciousness-raising is an element of the feminist history of ideas that we can still learn from today.

A biographic note on the new professor at UNICPH

This Master’s thesis investigates a contemporary tendency for women to withdraw from society, for instance, to become stay-at-home housewives. This is a tendency with a societal perspective, which I analyze based on the silence surrounding the protagonist Kris in René Frelle Petersen's film of 2019 titled Onkel. Kris is caught in a choice between taking care of her uncle and their farm, on the one hand, and self-realization, on the other hand. She cannot do both. Throughout the film, Kris surrounds herself with silence. My thesis is that this silence hides a story of her challenging conflict. At the end of the film, Kris withdraws from her dream of a carrier and chooses to be responsible for her uncle. For Kris, the choice appears difficult. Therefore, the film is a good starting point for a multifaceted investigation and discussion of the reasoning behind women’s withdrawal. I thereby apply the micro-perspective in the world of arts and film to investigate a complex gender- and socio-political question. In the thesis, I investigate whether an analysis of the crisis behind the silence of Kris can clarify and provide a discussion of a possible crisis in the withdrawal of women. My analysis of the film is based on the theories of Torben Grodal and David Bordwell, and it shows three main gender- and socio-political aspects related to the silence behind the crisis of Kris. I discuss and analyze the aspects of women’s withdrawal based on the theories of Judith Butler, Slavoj Zizek and Nancy Fraser. My analysis suggests that the contemporary tendency and the silence behind the crisis of Kris can be seen as a symptom of a society in a ‘Crisis of Care’, according to the theory of Nancy Fraser. This crisis is a matter of the society as draining all the care work, which is often performed by women. Vi konstruerer fortællingen om os selv gennem de fotos, vi deler. Og ikke kun på sociale medier: Det samme gælder for de knitrende albums med sort-hvide familiefotos og ringbind med plastiklommer fuld af charterminder og konfirmationsgæster, de fleste har i familien. Samtid og selvopfattelse skinner igennem i ethvert til- og fravalg på disse hverdagsfotos, forklarer Mette Sandbye i denne episode. Og med det rette blik samler de små historier i private samlinger sig til en større, kulturhistorisk fortælling. Som landets første professor i fotografistudier forsker Mette Sandbye i fotografiets rolle i kulturhistorien, og derfor udgør almindelige menneskers privatliv og den måde, de har valgt at skildre det i fotografier fra ferier, familiefester og fodboldkampe, en vigtig del af hendes data. I specialet bliver sproget der bruges om det danske kunstfotografi undersøgt. Med afsæt i eksempler af hovedsageligt Astrid Kruse Jensen og Trine Søndergaard, analyseres en række paratekster diskursivt for at kortlægge nogle sproglige regelmæssigheder. Sluttelig diskuteres det om kunstfotograferne kan løsrives fra diskursen, der har et malerisk præg., In the Master's thesis the language used when mentioning art photography is analysed. Drawing on examples from Astrid Kruse Jensen and Trine Søndergaard, numerous paratexts is discursively analysed to map some linguistic regularities. Finally, it is discussed if the art photographers can be detached from the discourse that seems to have a foundation in painting.

Grief is a generic phenomenon and when a person loses a beloved one, the loss can be absorbing. In this thesis, we investigate how art can be beneficial and create meaningfulness for a person experiencing grief through the research question: How can the interaction between art and a given context facilitate healing of grief? We have investigated this question by means of an interdisciplinary perspective consisting of both art history, phenomenological and neurological theory. In our research we examine POST SERVICE, which is a Copenhagen based clinic specialised in grief. The clinic was founded by Xanthippi de Vito and offers treatments in a combination of conversation and bodily interaction with the artistic environment. The grief clinic is curated by the Danish multidisciplinary studio and concept store TABLEAU which focuses on set design and curation of art. Our investigation is carried out using the art history method of exhibition analysis to examine the potential of art as a facilitator for healing grief and how the potential can be utilised by curating art with an eye for the inherent meaning of the specific context. We conclude that a context specific curation provides room for an intuitive experience of the materiality of art, enabled by the interaction between the aesthetic context and the materiality, and that it can bring a sense of revelation for the person in grief. Our research highlights POST SERVICE as a successful example of context specific curation and we believe this approach could be successfully used in the healthcare sector to create meaningful interiors and in the implementation of art to facilitate treatment of patients.
