for the whole book: Sessions XXXVIII-1,2 of UISPP 2018 in Paris were dedicated to monumental constructions and to complex exchange networks in the Pacific. Both topics have been extensively commented on and described by indigenous experts, explorers, missionaries, and scholars over the last two centuries, however these have been made famous only for the most impressive examples such as the moai statues of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) or the kula exchange system of the Trobriand Islands. Some of the latest research on these key aspects of Pacific islands societies are made available in this volume to researchers focusing on the region, but also to a more global scientific community and to the general public. The volume reflects the tremendous progress made in Pacific island archaeology in the last 60 years which has considerably advanced our knowledge of early Pacific island societies, the rise of traditional cultural systems, and their later historical developments from European contact onwards. Interdisciplinarity is particularly stimulating in the Pacific region, where the study of the archaeological record and of chronological sequences are often combined with other kinds of information such as ethnohistorical accounts, oral traditions, and linguistic reconstructions, in the French tradition of ethnoarchéologie and the American tradition of historical anthropology.

Despite the growing visibility and acceptance of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals, TGNC older adults experience many barriers in accessing competent and affirming health and social services due to anti-TGNC prejudice, discrimination, and lack of competent healthcare training on the part of healthcare workers. Clinical gerontologists and geriatricians will likely encounter TGNC adults in their practice given population aging and greater numbers of TGNC people who are living in their affirmed gender identities. The American Psychological Association recently published its Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming People, which document the unique needs of TGNC individuals and outlines approaches for competent and affirming service provision (APA, 2015). We interpret these Guidelines using a gerontological lens to elucidate specific issues faced by the TGNC older adult along with the practice and policy implications for this population.

In higher plants, a network of vascular tissues (the phloem and the xylem), which supply water, minerals and other nutrients, connects the different organs and provides mechanical support for the aerial organs. The xylem and the phloem are two highly specialized conductive tissues. The cell wall surrounding the vascular cells is reinforced by a complex matrix of sugar-derived compounds (i.e.: cellulose, hemicellulose, pectins) and lignin, whose compositions depend on the cell type and developmental stage. For example low lignin and high hemicellulose content characterize phloem cells, while lignin and xylans are enriched in xylem cells. The supply and synthesis of the cell wall precursors take place in specialized parenchyma and fibre cells, which are responsible of the thickening of the associated conductive cell walls. As a consequence phloem and xylem cells represent a sink for consumption and sequestration of carbohydrates, with a competitive allocation of carbon pools between lignin and cellulosic compounds, which leads to a negative correlation between biomass production and lignin content. To improve our knowledge on these processes, we focus on the carbohydrate components deposited during cell wall formation of phloem and xylem cells using the Arabidopsis thaliana floral stem as a model for carbon allocation. Our investigations, by label-free Synchrotron FT-IR, Raman and deep ultra violet microspectroscopies, of the cell wall composition and the cytosolic content of the different xylem and phloem cell types will be presented, using the floral stem of both Arabidopsis wild-type plants and mutants affected in sugar homeostasis.
