5. The Ellis semigroup of a nonautonomous discrete dynamical system

Abstract

We introduce the {\it Ellis semigroup} of a nonautonomous discrete dynamical system $(X,f_{1,\infty})$ when $X$ is a metric compact space. The underlying set of this semigroup is the pointwise closure of $\{f\sp{n}_1 \, |\, n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ in the space $X\sp{X}$. By using the convergence of a sequence of points with respect to an ultrafilter it is possible to give a precise description of the semigroup and its operation. This notion extends the classical Ellis semigroup of a discrete dynamical system. We show several properties that connect this semigroup and the topological properties of the nonautonomous discrete dynamical system.

Individuals with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion are at increased risk of poor outcomes. Intravenous thrombolysis with tenecteplase might improve outcomes in this population. We aimed to test the superiority of intravenous tenecteplase over non-thrombolytic standard of care in patients with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion or focal perfusion abnormality.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to present the results obtained by applying a reflective learning portfolio in a Spanish translation subject of the Mestrado em Tradução e Comunicação Multilingue taught at the Universidade do Minho. The implemented portfolio is part of the Eramus+ project “Fostering higher education students’ autonomy through blended learning”. One of the central objectives of the project is to analyse to what extent the development of this instrument and the feedback given by the teacher foster students’ autonomous competence, helping them to develop their metacognition skills and to regulate their learning. The use of the portfolio is preceded by the application of a questionnaire to obtain information about the students’ previous experiences with this learning tool, their perceptions and expectations. In order to collect homogeneous study samples, a rubric was developed and applied to the different subjects chosen to pilot the project, including the one we teach in the master’s degree. Using this rubric, teachers provide feedback on the students’ contributions to the portfolio at three different times during the semester. Both individually and collaboratively, students carry out translation assignments in the Portuguese-Spanish language pair, using computer-assisted translation and machine translation tools. Abstract

Estimating forest transpiration is of great importance for Adaptive Forest Management (AFM) in the scope of climate change prediction. AFM in the Mediterranean region usually generates a mosaic of different canopy covers within the same forest. Several models and methods are available to estimate forest transpiration, but most require a homogeneous forest cover, or an individual calibration/validation process for each cover stand. Hence, a model capable of reproducing accurately the transpiration of the whole canopy-cover mosaic is necessary. In this paper, the use of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is proposed as a flexible tool for estimating forest transpiration using the forest cover as an input variable. To that end, sap flow, soil water content and other environmental variables were experimentally collected under five Aleppo pine stands of different canopy covers for two years. These sets of inputs were then used for the ANN training. Stand transpiration was accurately estimated using climate data, soil water content and forest cover through the ANN approach (correlation coefficient R = 0.95; Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient E = 0.90; root-mean-square error RMSE = 0.078 mm day-1). Finally, the input value for soil water content (when not available) was computed using the process-based model Gotilwa+. Then, this computed soil water content was used as input in the proposed ANN. This combination predicted the forest transpiration with values of R = 0.90, E = 0.63, and RMSE = 0.068 mm day-1. Artificial Neural Network proved to be a useful and flexible tool to predict the transpiration dynamics of an Aleppo pine stand regardless of the heterogeneity of the forest cover produced by adaptive forest management.

Abstract

Climate change increases the occurrence and severity of droughts due to increasing temperatures, altered circulation patterns, and reduced snow occurrence. While Europe has suffered from drought events in the last decade unlike ever seen since the beginning of weather recordings, harmonized long-term datasets across the continent are needed to monitor change and support predictions. Here we present soil moisture data from 66 cosmic-ray neutron sensors (CRNSs) in Europe (COSMOS-Europe for short) covering recent drought events. The CRNS sites are distributed across Europe and cover all major land use types and climate zones in Europe. The raw neutron count data from the CRNS stations were provided by 24 research institutions and processed using state-of-the-art methods. The harmonized processing included correction of the raw neutron counts and a harmonized methodology for the conversion into soil moisture based on available in situ information. In addition, the uncertainty estimate is provided with the dataset, information that is particularly useful for remote sensing and modeling applications. This paper presents the current spatiotemporal coverage of CRNS stations in Europe and describes the protocols for data processing from raw measurements to consistent soil moisture products. The data of the presented COSMOS-Europe network open up a manifold of potential applications for environmental research, such as remote sensing data validation, trend analysis, or model assimilation. The dataset could be of particular importance for the analysis of extreme climatic events at the continental scale. Due its timely relevance in the scope of climate change in the recent years, we demonstrate this potential application with a brief analysis on the spatiotemporal soil moisture variability.

Abstract

Background: Hostile environment around the lesion site following spinal cord injury (SCI) prevents the re-establishment of neuronal tracks, thus significantly limiting the regenerative capability. Electroconductive scaffolds are emerging as a promising option for SCI repair, though currently available conductive polymers such as polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) present poor biofunctionality and biocompatibility, thus limiting their effective use in SCI tissue engineering (TE) treatment strategies. Methods: PEDOT NPs were synthesized via chemical oxidation polymerization in miniemulsion. The conductive PEDOT NPs were incorporated with gelatin and hyaluronic acid (HA) to create gel:HA:PEDOT-NPs scaffolds. Morphological analysis of both PEDOT NPs and scaffolds was conducted via SEM. Further characterisation included dielectric constant and permittivity variances mapped against morphological changes after crosslinking, Young’s modulus, FTIR, DLS, swelling studies, rheology, in-vitro, and in-vivo biocompatibility studies were also conducted. Results: Incorporation of PEDOT NPs increased the conductivity of scaffolds to 8.3 × 10–4 ± 8.1 × 10–5 S/cm. The compressive modulus of the scaffold was tailored to match the native spinal cord at 1.2 ± 0.2 MPa, along with controlled porosity. Rheological studies of the hydrogel showed excellent 3D shear-thinning printing capabilities and shape fidelity post-printing. In-vitro studies showed the scaffolds are cytocompatible and an in-vivo assessment in a rat SCI lesion model shows glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) upregulation not directly in contact with the lesion/implantation site, with diminished astrocyte reactivity. Decreased levels of macrophage and microglia reactivity at the implant site is also observed. This positively influences the re-establishment of signals and initiation of healing mechanisms. Observation of axon migration towards the scaffold can be attributed to immunomodulatory properties of HA in the scaffold caused by a controlled inflammatory response. HA limits astrocyte activation through its CD44 receptors and therefore limits scar formation. This allows for a superior axonal migration and growth towards the targeted implantation site through the provision of a stimulating microenvironment for regeneration. Conclusions: Based on these results, the incorporation of PEDOT NPs into Gel:HA biomaterial scaffolds enhances not only the conductive capabilities of the material, but also the provision of a healing environment around lesions in SCI. O estudo que nos ocupa tem como objetivo principal estudar o modo como é traduzido este fenómeno na legendagem em português da filmografia de Pedro Almodóvar. A partir da reflexão sobre a funcionalidade da presença de outras línguas no texto fílmico, analisamos a tradução dos casos de multilinguismo encontrados no corpus selecionado. Por último, com os dados obtidos, procuramos encontrar as tendências ou normas de tradução que prevalecem no processo de transposição para legendagem num corpus concreto e numa combinação linguística específica. Abstract Multilingualism is a reality of the contemporary world; therefore, it echoes in various artistic manifestations. The main goal of this research project is to study how this phenomenon is translated into the Portuguese, particularly in the subtitling of Pedro Almodóvar’s filmography in that same language. Through a reflection on the functionality of the presence of other languages in the filmic text, we intend to analyse the translation of the cases of multilingualism found in the selected corpus. Finally, with the data obtained, we will attempt at finding translation trends or norms that prevail in the process for subtitling in a concrete corpus and in a specific linguistic combination.
