Corruption, fraud, and unethical activities have emerged as significant obstacles to global economic, political, and social progress. Although many empirical studies have focused on country-level corruption metrics, this study is the first to utilize a substantial international dataset to assess the effects of illicit and unethical managerial practices on firm performance. Employing cross-sectional data, this research examines the influence of corruption on corporate outcomes. Our definition of corruption evaluates the degree to which managers engage in mismanagement, misconduct, or corrupt activities. 2. Planktonic foraminifera assemblage composition and flux dynamics inferred from an annual sediment trap record in the central Mediterranean Sea

Abstract

The Sicily Channel, located in the central Mediterranean Sea, represents a key point for the regional oceanographic circulation, as it is regarded as the sill that separates the western and eastern basins. Therefore, it is regarded as a unique zone in the well-documented west-to-east Mediterranean productivity gradient. Here we present a time series of settling planktonic foraminifera assemblages from November 2013 to October 2014. Altogether, 19 samples from the sediment trap C01 deployed at a water depth of around 400 m have been used. More than 3700 individuals and 15 different species have been identified. Globorotalia inflata, Globorotalia truncatulinoides, Globigerina bulloides, Globigerinoides ruber, and Globigerinoides ruber (pink) were the five main species identified, accounting for more than 85 % of the total foraminifera. The total planktonic foraminifera flux mean value was 630 shells m−2 d−1, with a minimum value of 45 shells m−2 d−1 displayed during late autumn 2013 and a maximum of 1890 shells m−2 d−1 reached during spring 2014. This is likely due to the regional oceanographic configuration and the marked seasonality in the surface circulation. During spring and winter, Atlantic Water (AW) dominates the surface circulation, bringing cool and nutrient-enriched waters. This results in a planktonic foraminifera flux increase and a dominance of western basin taxa. During summer and autumn, the circulation is dominated by the eastern warm and oligotrophic Levantine water, which leads to a planktonic foraminifera flux decrease and the dominance of eastern basin species. Our comparison with satellite-derived sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and chlorophyll a data showed that G. inflata was associated with cool and nutrient-rich conditions, while both G. ruber morphotypes were associated with warm and oligotrophic conditions. However, no trends were identified for G. truncatulinoides or G. bulloides. As the latter species flux increased coincidently with that of benthic foraminifera, we considered that this species might have a resuspended origin. The comparison of the Sicily Channel data with other Mediterranean time series indicates that the annualized planktonic foraminifera flux was lower than in the westernmost Alboran Sea but higher than in the easternmost Levantine Basin. The Sicily Channel species diversity was the highest among the compared zones, highlighting the influence of the different basins and its transitional aspect from a planktonic foraminifera population perspective. Finally, we compared the settling planktonic foraminifera assemblage with the assemblages from seabed sediment located in the vicinity of the Sicily Channel. The differences in the seabed populations varied according to the sites studied. The deep-dwelling species dominated the settling assemblage samples, while eutrophic and oligotrophic species were more abundant in the sediment. Finally, a high-resolution chronology comparison allowed us to show that this planktonic foraminifera population shift likely developed during the late Holocene prior to the industrial period; however, its causes remain uncertain.

Abstract

Pteropods are a group of cosmopolitan holoplanktic gastropods that produce an aragonite shell and play an important role in both marine ecosystems and geochemical cycles. In addition to being affected by anthropogenic impacts that include warming and changes in carbonate system parameters, the Mediterranean Sea is considered to be understudied concerning pteropods dynamics and abundances. This work aims to document the modern spatial and temporal distributions of pteropods populations in the Northwestern and Central Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lions and Strait of Sicily), respectively. We present data from two sediment-trap records that cover the timeframe between early 1996 and early 2004 for the Gulf of Lions and late 2013 to late 2014 for the Sicily Strait. A total of 843 pteropod shells and 18 different species were identified. Limacina inflata, Creseis virgula and Creseis clava were the most abundant species in the Gulf of Lions, while in the Sicily Strait, C. conica replaced C. clava as the most abundant species. These taxons represented around 70% of the total individuals identified in both sites. Overall, our results suggest a greater pteropod abundance in the Gulf of Lions than in the Sicily Strait, most likely due to enhanced food conditions. In the Gulf of Lions, maximum fluxes occurred in autumn (32.5% of the annual pteropod fluxes registered in October), while in the Sicily Strait peak fluxes occurred in winter (30.5% of the annual pteropod fluxes registered in January). Comparison of temporal changes pteropod fluxes with satellite sea surface temperature (SST), and chlorophyll-a concentration suggest a possible positive effect of high algal accumulation and cool water conditions in the Strait of Sicily on the main pteropod groups. In turn, no clear relationships between pteropod groups, SST and chlorophyll-a were identified in the Gulf of Lions, highlighting the effect of salinity and carbonate system parameters. Overall, and despite the limitations associated with the use of sediment traps for pteropod population monitoring, the consistency of our results with the literature supports the use of sediment traps as useful tools for documenting the diversity and temporal distribution of pteropods.

Abstract

Based on the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) surveys and conducting a panel data estimation to test our hypothesis, this paper examines whether corruption perceptions might sand or grease the wheels for entrepreneurship inside companies or intrapreneurship in a sample of 92 countries for the period 2012 to 2019. Our results find that the corruption perception sands the wheel for intrapreneurship. There is evidence of a quadratic relation, but this relation is only clear for the less developed countries, which sort of moderate the very negative effect of corruption for these countries. The results also confirm that corruption influences differently on intrapreneurship depending on the level of development of the country., Comment: 18 pages

Abstract

Abstract Flaws or cracks are one of the major failures in oil and gas pipeline networks. The early detection of these failures is very important for the safety of the industry, and this last requires of analysis for non-destructive testing (NDT), which is reliable, inexpensive and easy to implement. In this paper, we propose the development of an embedded prototype mounted on a mobile robot for the inspection of defects in ferromagnetic plates. This prototype has two embedded systems (control and data acquisition), which are based on a microcontroller of 8 and 32 bits, respectively. On the one hand, the first system for control has the logic to govern the sensors and motors that will allow to the robot moves with autonomous way during 45 min. While, the second system presents an algorithm for storing, processing and sending the data obtained from the sensors, being able to measure variations in the magnetic field in the order of 0.1 µT. Magnetic-field reading tests have been carried out on control ASTM A-27 ferromagnetic plates, obtaining experimental response in the 3 axes of the magnetic domains, which is very close to the expected results by the magnetic-flux density model that is calculated from the fields E and B derived from the equations of a Hertz dipole, and developed in the high-level Python programming language. The prototype proposed for NDT can detect geometric defects in the range of millimeters, producing changes in the density of the magnetic field in the order of thousands of µT.

24. Biogeographical and seasonal distribution of pteropod populations in the Western and Central Mediterranean Sea inferred from sediment traps

Abstract

Pteropods are a group of cosmopolitan holoplanktic gastropods that produce an aragonite shell and play an important role in both marine ecosystems and geochemical cycles. In addition to being affected by anthropogenic impacts that include warming and changes in carbonate system parameters, the Mediterranean Sea is considered to be understudied concerning pteropods dynamics and abundances. This work aims to document the modern spatial and temporal distributions of pteropods populations in the Northwestern and Central Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lions and Strait of Sicily), respectively. We present data from two sediment-trap records that cover the timeframe between early 1996 and early 2004 for the Gulf of Lions and late 2013 to late 2014 for the Sicily Strait. A total of 843 pteropod shells and 18 different species were identified. Limacina inflata, Creseis virgula and Creseis clava were the most abundant species in the Gulf of Lions, while in the Sicily Strait, C. conica replaced C. clava as the most abundant species. These taxons represented around 70% of the total individuals identified in both sites. Overall, our results suggest a greater pteropod abundance in the Gulf of Lions than in the Sicily Strait, most likely due to enhanced food conditions. In the Gulf of Lions, maximum fluxes occurred in autumn (32.5% of the annual pteropod fluxes registered in October), while in the Sicily Strait peak fluxes occurred in winter (30.5% of the annual pteropod fluxes registered in January). Comparison of temporal changes pteropod fluxes with satellite sea surface temperature (SST), and chlorophyll-a concentration suggest a possible positive effect of high algal accumulation and cool water conditions in the Strait of Sicily on the main pteropod groups. In turn, no clear relationships between pteropod groups, SST and chlorophyll-a were identified in the Gulf of Lions, highlighting the effect of salinity and carbonate system parameters. 27. Seagrasses provide a novel ecosystem service by trapping marine plastics

Abstract

Abstract There is strong evidence that the seafloor constitutes a final sink for plastics from land sources. There is also evidence that part of the plastics lying on the shallow seafloor are washed up back to the shoreline. However, little is known on the natural trapping processes leading to such landwards return. Here we investigate microplastics and larger plastic debris within beached seagrass remains including balls (aegagropilae) made of natural aggregates of vegetal fibers intertwined by seawater motion. We found up to 1470 plastic items per kg of plant material, which were mainly composed of negatively buoyant polymer filaments and fibers. Our findings show that seagrass meadows promote plastic debris trapping and aggregation with natural lignocellulosic fibers, which are then ejected and escape the coastal ocean. Our results show how seagrasses, one of the key ecosystems on Earth in terms of provision of goods and services, also counteract marine plastic pollution. In view of our findings, the regression of seagrass meadows in some marine regions acquires a new dimension.

Abstract

Physical and biogeochemical processes in the Southern Ocean are fundamental for modulating global climate. In this context, a process-based understanding of how Antarctic diatoms control primary production and carbon export, and hence global-ocean carbon sequestration, has been identified as a scientific priority. Here we use novel sediment trap observations in combination with a data-assimilative ocean biogeochemistry model (ECCO-Darwin) to understand how environmental conditions trigger diatom ecology in the iron-fertilized southern Scotia Sea. We unravel the role of diatoms assemblage in controlling the biogeochemistry of sinking material escaping from the euphotic zone, and discuss the link between changes in upper-ocean environmental conditions and the composition of settling material exported from the surface to 1,000 m depth from March 2012 to January 2013. The combined analysis of in situ observations and model simulation suggests that an anomalous sea-ice episode in early summer 2012–2013 favored (via restratification due to sea-ice melt) an early massive bloom of Corethron pennatum that rapidly sank to depth. This event drove high biogenic silicon to organic carbon export ratios, while modulating the carbon and nitrogen isotopic signals of sinking organic matter reaching the deep ocean. Our findings highlight the role of diatom ecology in modulating silicon vs. carbon sequestration efficiency, a critical factor for determining the stoichiometric relationship of limiting nutrients in the Southern Ocean.

Abstract

Sinking particles are a critical conduit for the export of organic material from surface waters to the deep ocean. Despite their importance in oceanic carbon cycling, little is known about the biotic composition and seasonal variability of sinking particles reaching abyssal depths. Herein, sinking particle flux data, collected in the deep Ierapetra Basin for a three-year period (June 2010 to June 2013), have been examined at the light of atmospheric and oceanographic parameters and main mass components (lithogenic, opal, carbonates, nitrogen, and organic carbon), stable isotopes of particulate organic carbon (POC) and source-specific lipid biomarkers. Our aim is to improve the current understanding of the dynamics of particle fluxes and the linkages between atmospheric dynamics and ocean biogeochemistry shaping the export of organic matter in the deep Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Overall, particle fluxes showed seasonality and interannual variability over the studied period. POC fluxes peaked in spring April–May 2012 (12.2 mg m−2 d−1) related with extreme atmospheric forcing. Summer export was approximately fourfold higher than mean wintertime, fall and springtime (except for the episodic event of spring 2012), fueling efficient organic carbon sequestration. Lipid biomarkers indicate a high relative contribution of natural and anthropogenic, marine- and land-derived POC during both spring (April–May) and summer (June–July) reaching the deep-sea floor. Moreover, our results highlight that both seasonal and episodic pulses are crucial for POC export, while the coupling of extreme weather events and atmospheric deposition can trigger the influx of both marine labile carbon and anthropogenic compounds to the deep Levantine Sea. Finally, the comparison of time series data of sinking particulate flux with the corresponding biogeochemical parameters data previously reported for surface sediment samples from the deep-sea shed light on the benthic–pelagic coupling in the study area. Thus, this study underscores that accounting the seasonal and episodic pulses of organic carbon into the deep sea is critical in modeling the depth and intensity of natural and anthropogenic POC sequestration, and for a better understanding of the global carbon cycle.

Abstract

Research on plastic pollution has rapidly expanded in recent years and has led to the discovery of vast amounts of microplastics floating on the surface of subtropical oceanic gyres. However, the distribution of floating plastic in the ocean is still poorly constrained, and there is a lack of information from a few meters from the coastline where the largest plastic emissions take place. Here, we provide a comprehensive study on the loads of plastic debris in the coastal surface waters of the NW Mediterranean Sea using data from 124 manta trawl deployments collected along 7 months by citizen scientists. Our results reveal that pollution by microplastics in the nearshore is likely subject to seasonal variations associated to a combination of hydrodynamic and anthropogenic pressures. The high proportions of microplastics found indicate that potential breakdown of plastics in the nearshore may take place in line with previous works. We prove that citizen science is a powerful tool in plastic research to monitor microplastics in the nearshore as it provides scientifically meaningful results while stimulating citizen engagement. Future studies may benefit from targeting specific scientific open questions by using the citizen science methodological approach presented here.

Abstract

High-latitude regions are warming faster than other areas due to reduction of snow cover and sea ice loss and changes in atmospheric and ocean circulation. The combination of these processes, collectively known as polar amplification, provides an extraordinary opportunity to document the ongoing thermal destabilisation of the terrestrial cryosphere and the release of land-derived material into the aquatic environment. This study presents a 6-year time series (2010–2016) of physical parameters and particle fluxes collected by an oceanographic mooring in Kongsfjorden (Spitsbergen, Svalbard). In recent decades, Kongsfjorden has been experiencing rapid loss of sea ice coverage and retreat of local glaciers as a result of the progressive increase in ocean and air temperatures. The overarching goal of this study was to continuously monitor the inner fjord particle sinking and to understand to what extent the temporal evolution of particulate fluxes was linked to the progressive changes in both Atlantic and freshwater input. Our data show high peaks of settling particles during warm seasons, in terms of both organic and inorganic matter. The different sources of suspended particles were described as a mixing of glacier carbonate, glacier siliciclastic and autochthonous marine input. The glacier releasing sediments into the fjord was the predominant source, while the sediment input by rivers was reduced at the mooring site. Our time series showed that the seasonal sunlight exerted first-order control on the particulate fluxes in the inner fjord. The marine fraction peaked when the solar radiation was at a maximum in May–June while the land-derived fluxes exhibited a 1–2-month lag consistent with the maximum air temperature and glacier melting. The inter-annual time-weighted total mass fluxes varied by 2 orders of magnitude over time, with relatively higher values in 2011, 2013, and 2015. Our results suggest that the land-derived input will remarkably increase over time in a warming scenario. Further studies are therefore needed to understand the future response of the Kongsfjorden ecosystem alterations with respect to the enhanced release of glacier-derived material.
