3. A complex network analysis of the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) package ecosystem

Abstract

Free and open source software package ecosystems have existed for a long time and are among the most sophisticated human-made systems. One of the oldest and most popular software package ecosystems is CRAN, the repository of packages of the statistical language R, which is also one of the most popular environments for statistical computing nowadays. CRAN stores a large number of packages that are updated regularly and depend on a number of other packages in a complex graph of relations; such graph is empirically studied from the perspective of complex network analysis (CNA) in the current article, showing how network theory and measures proposed by previous work can help profiling the ecosystem and detecting strengths, good practices and potential risks in three perspectives: macroscopic properties of the ecosystem (structure and complexity of the network), microscopic properties of individual packages (represented as nodes), and modular properties (community detection). Abstract

Learning analytics is a domain that has been constantly evolving throughout recent years due to the acknowledgement of its importance by those using intelligent data, learner-produced data, and analysis models to discover information and social connections for predicting and advising people's learning [1]. Learning analytics may be applied in a variety of different cases, but their role in understanding the multilingual requirements of users of learning portals is of an outstanding significance. As the adaptation of existing portals in multilingual environments is a cost- and time-consuming aspect of the development of a portal, the outcomes of learning analytics may provide the requirements on which further multilingual services of a portal will be built, ensuring their efficiency. This paper aims to identify and interpret the behavior of users from developing countries in a multilingual learning portal using the log files of the portal by applying the methodology defined in a previous work by Stoitsis et al. [2] The paper also aims to identify the aspects that should be studied by future related works by focusing on specific regions and countries that exhibit special interest for further adaptation of the portal to additional multilingual environments.

Abstract

Exposing eLearning objects on the Web of Data leads to sharing and reusing of educational resources and improves the interoperability of data on the Web. Furthermore, it enriches e-learning content, as it is connected to other valuable resources using the Linked Data principles. This paper describes a study performed on the Organic.Edunet repository, as an e-learning portal in an agricultural context. In this research, we experiment with exposing the Organic.Edunet metadata as Linked Open Data and interlinking its contents to several relevant datasets on the Web. An analysis of the metadata and of the interlinking results is presented in this paper as well.

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital health landscape, technology plays a pivotal role in transforming the healthcare industry. With the exponential growth of data, uncovering valuable insights has become a daunting task. In today's data-driven world, healthcare businesses must leverage emerging technologies to stay informed about trends in their field. This research article presents a novel approach to deriving business insights in digital health enabled by technology, including artificial intelligence, and other cutting-edge advancements. We propose a methodology that utilizes news mining techniques and the global data on events, location, and tone database as the primary data source. By employing natural language processing, we developed a practical way of extracting relevant insights from vast amounts of public data. We implemented named-entity recognition (NER) enriched with the DBpedia knowledge base and relationship extraction. In addition, we leveraged graph analytics to identify and analyze the most significant concept relationships within the text corpus and their evolution in time. By integrating these advanced techniques, healthcare businesses can extract actionable insights from public datasets, empowering them to stay abreast of emerging trends and advancements in digital health, such as telehealth, precision medicine, or medical imaging.

46. Providing Semantic Metadata to Online Learning Resources on Sustainable Agriculture and Farming: Combining Values and Technical Knowledge

Abstract

Sustainable or organic agriculture aims at harmonizing the efficient production of food with the preservation of the environmental conditions for continuing production in a sustained way. As such, it embodies a set of environmental values that are currently taught and learnt worldwide in specific courses or as part of broader programs or curricula. The increased availability of online, open learning resources enables new possibilities for education in the domain of sustainable agriculture and farming. Concretely, portal projects related to sustainable agriculture have been deployed in the last years, using metadata as a mechanism to make resource search more effective in large, multilingual, and heterogeneous content databases. As environmental values are part of the learning needs targeted by those systems, it is required that both axiological descriptions (relating to values) and technical information (related to domain-specific issues) are expressed through metadata records, which requires a clear differentiation of both kinds of descriptions. This article reports on a knowledge modeling approach that fulfils that need and that can be used for the annotation of learning resources using standardized metadata schemas as IEEE LOM. The model has been prepared for the annotation of learning resources in a cross-national federation of organic agriculture repositories called Organic.Edunet, enabling the combination of both kinds of aspects in the formulation of searches. An analytic assessment of the expressive capabilities of the approach is provided using example resources. (Contains 4 figures, 1 table, and 15 notes.)

47. A Survey on the Exchange of Linguistic Resources: Publishing Linguistic Linked Open Data on the Web

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide a literature review of the principal formats and frameworks that have been used in the last 20 years to exchange linguistic resources. It aims to give special attention to the most recent approaches to publishing linguistic linked open data on the Web. Design/methodology/approach: Research papers published since 1990 on the use of various formats, standards, frameworks and methods to exchange linguistic information were divided into two main categories: those proposing specific schemas and syntaxes to suit the requirements of a given type of linguistic data (these are referred to as offline approaches), and those adopting the linked data (LD) initiative and the semantic web technologies to support the interoperability of heterogeneous linguistic resources. For each paper, the type of linguistic resource exchanged, the framework/format used, the interoperability approach taken and the related projects were identified. Findings: The information gathered in the survey reflects an increase in recent years in approaches adopting the LD initiative. This is due to the fact that the structural and syntactic issues which arise when addressing the interoperability of linguistic resources can be solved by applying semantic web technologies. What remains an open issue in the field of computational linguistics is the development of knowledge artefacts and mechanisms to support the alignment of the different aspects of linguistic resources in order to guarantee semantic and conceptual interoperability in the linked open data (LOD) cloud. Ontologies have proved to be of great use in achieving this goal. Research limitations/implications: The research presented here is by no means a comprehensive or all-inclusive survey of all existing approaches to the exchange of linguistic resources. Rather, the aim was to highlight, analyze and categorize the most significant advances in the field. Practical implications: This survey has practical implications for computational linguists and for every application requiring new developments in natural language processing. In addition, multilingual issues can be better addressed when semantic interoperability of heterogeneous linguistic resources is achieved. Originality/value: The paper provides a survey of past and present research and developments addressing the interoperability of linguistic resources, including those where the linked data initiative has been adopted. 48. Interlinking Educational Resources and the Web of Data: A Survey of Challenges and Approaches

Abstract

Purpose: Research in the area of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) throughout the last decade has largely focused on sharing and reusing educational resources and data. This effort has led to a fragmented landscape of competing metadata schemas, or interface mechanisms. More recently, semantic technologies were taken into account to improve interoperability. The linked data approach has emerged as the "de facto" standard for sharing data on the web. To this end, it is obvious that the application of linked data principles offers a large potential to solve interoperability issues in the field of TEL. This paper aims to address this issue. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, approaches are surveyed that are aimed towards a vision of linked education, i.e. education which exploits educational web data. It particularly considers the exploitation of the wealth of already existing TEL data on the web by allowing its exposure as linked data and by taking into account automated enrichment and interlinking techniques to provide rich and well-interlinked data for the educational domain. Findings: So far web-scale integration of educational resources is not facilitated, mainly due to the lack of take-up of shared principles, datasets and schemas. However, linked data principles increasingly are recognized by the TEL community. The paper provides a structured assessment and classification of existing challenges and approaches, serving as potential guideline for researchers and practitioners in the field. Originality/value: Being one of the first comprehensive surveys on the topic of linked data for education, the paper has the potential to become a widely recognized reference publication in the area.
