While previous studies indicated the mobility reversal of an electrically-powered metallo-dielectric Janus particle (JP) with increasing frequency, here we report an intriguing second mobility reversal observed in optoelectronically-driven JPs. In contrast to the commonly used setup with parallel ITO-coated glass substrates to induce a uniform electric field orthogonal to the velocity direction, this setup incorporates a thin photoconductive layer deposited on the bottom ITO-coated glass substrate. We have found that the reversal is associated with the asymmetry of the bottom substrate's photoconductivity, localized underneath the JP, resulting from the self-shading effect of the metallic hemisphere under top optical illumination. Numerous control tests, including optical illumination from the bottom, along with numerical simulations, support this hypothesized mechanism

Compton cameras are radiation detectors that provide spatial information on the origin of the {\gamma}-ray sources based on the Compton scattering effect. Many applications require these detectors to be used at high counting rate. As such, the preprocessing of the detections as well as the imaging algorithms are required to be time-efficient in order for the data to be processed in real time. In this work, optimizations to the preprocessing of events in Compton cameras based on monolithic crystals, with special focus on event identification, were implemented using a parallelizable algorithm. Regarding imaging, an established 3D back projection algorithm was parallelized and implemented using SYCL. The parallel implementation of the algorithm was included without and with several optimizations such as the pre-computing values, discarding low impact contributions based on angle, and selecting an efficient shape of the image universe. The implementations were tested with Intel CPUs, GPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs. Memetic algorithms are techniques that orchestrate the interplay between population-based and trajectory-based algorithmic components. In particular, some memetic models can be regarded under this broad interpretation as a group of autonomous basic optimization algorithms that interact among them in a cooperative way in order to deal with a specific optimization problem, aiming to obtain better results than the algorithms that constitute it separately. Going one step beyond this traditional view of cooperative optimization algorithms, this work tackles deep meta-cooperation, namely the use of cooperative optimization algorithms in which some components can in turn be cooperative methods themselves, thus exhibiting a deep algorithmic architecture. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that such models can be considered as an efficient alternative to other traditional forms of cooperative algorithms. To validate this claim, different structural parameters, such as the communication topology between the agents, or the parameter that influences the depth of the cooperative effort (the depth of meta-cooperation), have been analyzed. To do this, a comparison with the state-of-the-art cooperative methods to solve a specific combinatorial problem, the Tool Switching Problem, has been performed. Digital collectible card games are not only a growing part of the video game industry, but also an interesting research area for the field of computational intelligence. This game genre allows researchers to deal with hidden information, uncertainty and planning, among other aspects. This paper proposes the use of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to develop agents who play a card game, Hearthstone, by optimizing a data-driven decision-making mechanism that takes into account all the elements currently in play. Agents feature self-learning by means of a competitive coevolutionary training approach, whereby no external sparring element defined by the user is required for the optimization process. One of the agents developed through the proposed approach was runner-up (best 6%) in an international Hearthstone Artificial Intelligence (AI) competition. Our proposal performed remarkably well, even when it faced state-of-the-art techniques that attempted to take into account future game states, such as Monte-Carlo Tree search. This paper explores the adaptation and application of i-TED Compton imagers for real-time dosimetry in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The i-TED array, previously utilized in nuclear astrophysics experiments at CERN, is being optimized for detecting and imaging 478 keV gamma-rays, critical for accurate BNCT dosimetry. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations were used to optimize the i-TED detector configuration and enhance its performance in the challenging radiation environment typical of BNCT. Additionally, advanced 3D image reconstruction algorithms, including a combination of back-projection and List-Mode Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization (LM-MLEM), are implemented and validated through simulations. When search methods are being designed it is very important to know which parameters have the greatest influence on the behaviour and performance of the algorithm. To this end, algorithm parameters are commonly calibrated by means of either theoretic analysis or intensive experimentation. When undertaking a detailed statistical analysis of the influence of each parameter, the designer should pay attention mostly to the parameters that are statistically significant. In this paper the ANOVA (ANalysis Of the VAriance) method is used to carry out an exhaustive analysis of a simulated annealing based method and the different parameters it requires. Following this idea, the significance and relative importance of the parameters regarding the obtained results, as well as suitable values for each of these, were obtained using ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey HSD test, on four well known function optimization problems and the likelihood function that is used to estimate the parameters involved in the lognormal diffusion process. Through this statistical study we have verified the adequacy of parameter values available in the bibliography using parametric hypothesis tests.

Theoretical and numerical models of active Janus particles commonly assume that the metallo-dielectric interface is parallel to the driving applied electric field. However, our experimental observations indicate that the equilibrium angle of orientation of electrokinetically driven Janus particles varies as a function of the frequency and voltage of the applied electric field. Here, we quantify the variation of the orientation with respect to the electric field and demonstrate that the equilibrium position represents the interplay between gravitational, electrostatic and electrohydrodynamic torques. The latter two categories are functions of the applied field (frequency, voltage) as well as the height of the particle above the substrate. Maximum departure from the alignment with the electric field occurs at low frequencies characteristic of induced-charge electrophoresis and at low voltages where gravity dominates the electrostatic and electrohydrodynamic torques. The departure of the interface from alignment with the electric field is shown to decrease particle mobility through comparison of freely suspended Janus particles subject only to electrical forcing and magnetized Janus particles in which magnetic torque is used to align the interface with the electric field. Consideration of the role of gravitational torque and particle-wall interactions could account for some discrepancies between theory, numerics and experiment in active matter systems.

The performance of recommendation algorithms is closely tied to key characteristics of the data sets they use, such as sparsity, popularity bias, and preference distributions. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive explanatory analysis to shed light on the impact of a broad range of data characteristics within the point-of-interest (POI) recommendation domain. To accomplish this, we extend prior methodologies used to characterize traditional recommendation problems by introducing new explanatory variables specifically relevant to POI recommendation. We subdivide a POI recommendation data set on New York City into domain-driven subsamples to measure the effect of varying these characteristics on different state-of-the-art POI recommendation algorithms in terms of accuracy, novelty, and item exposure. Our findings, obtained through the application of an explanatory framework employing multiple-regression models, reveal that the relevant independent variables encompass all categories of data characteristics and account for as much as $R^2 = $ 85-90\% of the accuracy and item exposure achieved by the algorithms. Our study reaffirms the pivotal role of prominent data characteristics, such as density, popularity bias, and the distribution of check-ins in POI recommendation. Additionally, we unveil novel factors, such as the proximity of user activity to the city center and the duration of user activity. In summary, our work reveals why certain POI recommendation algorithms excel in specific recommendation problems and, conversely, offers practical insights into which data characteristics should be modified (or explicitly recognized) to achieve better performance.

Fast neutron beams are of relevance for many scientific and industrial applications. This paper explores fast neutron production using a TANDEM accelerator at the Legnaro National Laboratories, via an energetic ion beam (90 MeV $^{14}N$) onto a lithium target. The high energy models for nuclear collision of FLUKA foresee large neutron yields for reactions of this kind. The experiment aimed at validating the expected neutron yields from FLUKA simulations, using two separate and independent set-ups: one based on the multi-foil activation technique, and the other on the time of flight technique, by using liquid scintillator detectors. The results of the experiment show clear agreement of the measured spectra with the FLUKA simulations, both in the shape and the magnitude of the neutron flux at the measured positions. The neutron spectrum is centered around the 8 MeV range with mild tails, and a maximum neutron energy spanning up to 50 MeV. These advantageous results provide a starting point in the development of fast neutron beams based on high energy ion beams from medium-sized accelerator facilities.

The computational requirements of future large scale radio telescopes are expected to scale well beyond the capabilities of conventional digital resources. Current and planned telescopes are generally limited in their scientific potential by their ability to efficiently process the vast volumes of generated data. To mitigate this problem, we investigate the viability of emerging quantum computers for radio astronomy applications. In this a paper we demonstrate the potential use of variational quantum linear solvers in Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) computers and combinatorial solvers in quantum annealers for a radio astronomy calibration pipeline. While we demonstrate that these approaches can lead to satisfying results when integrated in calibration pipelines, we show that current restrictions of quantum hardware limit their applicability and performance.

It is critical to monitor the structural evolution during deformation of complex fluids for the optimization of many manufacturing processes, including textile spinning. However, in situ measurements in a textile spinning process suffer from paucity of non-destructive instruments and interpretations of the measured data. In this work, kinetic and rheo-optic properties of a cellulose/ionic liquid solution were measured simultaneously while fibers were regenerated in aqueous media from a miniature wet spinline equipped with a customized polarized microscope. This system enables to control key spinning parameters, while capturing and processing the geometrical and structural information of the spun fiber in a real-time manner. We identified complex flow kinematics of a deformed fiber during the coagulation process via feature tracking methods, and visualized its morphology and birefringent responses before and during regeneration at varying draw ratios and residence time. Meanwhile, a three-dimensional physical rheological model was applied to describe the non-linear viscoelastic behavior in a complex wet-spinning process incorporating both shear and extensional flows. We subsequently compared the birefringent responses of fibers under coagulation with the transient orientation inferred from the rheological model, and identified a superposed structure-optic relationship under varying spinning conditions. Such structural characterizations inferred from the flow dynamics of spinning dopes are readily connected with key mechanical properties of fully-regenerated fibers, thus enabling to predict the spinning performance in a non-destructive protocol., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures

We simulate and experimentally demonstrate the existence of an orientation of quartz which minimizes diffraction losses in surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators at ultra-low temperatures. The orientation is optimized for applications to quantum technologies which benefit from high mechanical quality factors, strong electromechanical coupling, and narrow acoustic apertures. We fabricate narrow aperture SAW resonators on this substrate and measure internal quality factors greater than 100,000 at mK temperatures., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

In this paper, we review some grid quality metrics Robinson1987, Lo1989, Field2000, Knupp2001, Remacle2012 and define some new quality measures for quadrilateral elements. Usually, a maximum value of a quality measure corresponds to the minimum value of the energy density over the grid Ivanenko2000. We also define new discrete functionals which are implemented as objective functions in an optimization-based method for quadrilateral grid generation and improvement. These functionals are linearly combined with a discrete functional whose domain has an infinite barrier at the boundary of the set of unfolded grids like $S_{\omega,\epsilon}(G)$, see Barrera2010, in order to preserve convex grid cells in each step of the optimization process., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

This article surveys the literature over the period 2003-2021 on heart-based biometric protocols. In particular, we focus on how the heart signal is transformed from a continuous wave to discrete values to be used afterwards in authentication protocols. We explain and classify the surveyed proposals according to three main parameters: i) the dataset they use for testing their results; ii) the delineation algorithms they use to extract the fiducial points, and; iii) the cryptographic tests they run (if any) to validate how random the extracted token is.
