Abstract

Infectious diseases, transmitted directly or indirectly, are among the leading causes of epidemics and pandemics. Consequently, several open challenges exist in predicting epidemic outbreaks, detecting variants, tracing contacts, discovering new drugs, and fighting misinformation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide tools to deal with these scenarios, demonstrating promising results in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. AI is becoming increasingly integrated into various aspects of society. However, ensuring that AI benefits are distributed equitably and that they are used responsibly is crucial. Multiple countries are creating regulations to address these concerns, but the borderless nature of AI requires global cooperation to define regulatory and guideline consensus. Considering this, The Global South AI for Pandemic & Epidemic Preparedness & Response Network (AI4PEP) has developed an initiative comprising 16 projects across 16 countries in the Global South, seeking to strengthen equitable and responsive public health systems that leverage Southern-led responsible AI solutions to improve prevention, preparedness, and response to emerging and re-emerging infectious disease outbreaks. This opinion introduces our branches in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries and discusses AI governance in LAC in the light of biotechnology. Our network in LAC has high potential to help fight infectious diseases, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, generating opportunities for the widespread use of AI techniques to improve the health and well-being of their communities.

2. Squeezed state protection of fine structure in 'Poor Man's Majorana' via quantum spin coupling

Abstract

The "Poor Man's Majorana" [Phys. Rev. B 86, 134528 (2012)] devoid of topological protection has been theoretically predicted to rely on the minimal Kitaev chain. Afterward, a pair of superconducting and spinless quantum dots turned the proposal practicable and differential conductance pinpointed consistent fingerprints with such a scenario [Nature 614, 445 (2023) and Nature 630, 329 (2024)]. In this work, we propose a model wherein the "Poor Man's Majorana" presents protection when one of the dots is exchange coupled to a quantum spin. If this quantum dot is perturbed by tuning the exchange coupling, the well-known spill over-like behavior of this Majorana surprisingly remains unchanged, and solely half of the fine structure is unexpectedly viewed. As a matter of fact, the "Poor Man's Majorana" zero mode consists in squeezing of the other half at zero frequency, which imposes its pinning there and prevents the mixing of the mode with the explicit fine structure. We claim that if the supposed unavoidable split of the zero mode by the fine structure is unexpectedly absent, then the "Poor Man's Majorana" can be considered robust against the quantum spin. In this way, it becomes protected and the lack of topological protection paradigm of the "Poor Man's Majorana" has been revisited, pushing this seemingly well-established issue into a new direction.

3. From Brazilian Portuguese to European Portuguese

Abstract

Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are two varieties of the same language and, despite their close similarities, they exhibit several differences. However, there is a significant disproportion in the availability of resources between the two variants, with Brazilian Portuguese having more abundant resources. This inequity can impact the quality of translation services accessible to European Portuguese speakers. To address this issue, we propose the development of a Brazilian Portuguese to European Portuguese translation system, leveraging recent advancements in neural architectures and models. To evaluate the performance of such systems, we manually curated a gold test set comprising 500 sentences across five different topics. Each sentence in the gold test set has two distinct references, facilitating a straightforward evaluation of future translation models. We experimented with various models by fine-tuning existing Large Language Models using parallel data extracted from movie subtitles and TED Talks transcripts in both Brazilian and European Portuguese. Our evaluation involved the use of conventional automatic metrics as well as a human evaluation. Abstract

We present AsterX, a novel open-source, GPU-accelerated, fully general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) code designed for dynamic spacetimes in 3D Cartesian coordinates, and tailored for exascale computing. We utilize block-structured adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) through CarpetX, the new driver for the Einstein Toolkit, which is built on AMReX, a software framework for massively parallel applications. AsterX employs the Valencia formulation for GRMHD, coupled with the 'Z4c' formalism for spacetime evolution, while incorporating high resolution shock capturing schemes to accurately handle the hydrodynamics. AsterX has undergone rigorous testing in both static and dynamic spacetime, demonstrating remarkable accuracy and agreement with other codes in literature. Benchmarking the code through scaling tests on OLCF's Frontier supercomputer, we demonstrate a weak scaling efficiency of about 67%-77% on 4096 nodes compared to an 8-node performance., Comment: 41 pages, 12 figures, to be submitted to Classical and Quantum Gravity

Abstract

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract

Delay discounting refers to the behavioral tendency to devalue rewards as a function of their delay in receipt. Heightened delay discounting has been associated with substance use disorders and multiple co-occurring psychopathologies. Human and animal genetic studies have established that delay discounting is heritable, but only a few associated genes have been identified. We aimed to identify novel genetic loci associated with delay discounting through a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using Heterogeneous Stock (HS) rats, a genetically diverse outbred population derived from eight inbred founder strains. We assessed delay discounting in 650 male and female HS rats using an adjusting amount procedure in which rats chose between smaller immediate sucrose rewards or a larger reward at various delays. Preference switch points were calculated and both exponential and hyperbolic functions were fitted to these indifference points. Area under the curve (AUC) and the discounting parameter k of both functions were used as delay discounting measures. GWAS for AUC, exponential k, and one indifference point identified significant loci on chromosomes 20 and 14. The gene Slc35f1, which encodes a member of the solute carrier family, was the sole gene within the chromosome 20 locus. That locus also contained an eQTL for Slc35f1, suggesting that heritable differences in the expression might be responsible for the association with behavior. Adgrl3, which encodes a latrophilin subfamily G-protein coupled receptor, was the sole gene within the chromosome 14 locus. These findings implicate novel genes in delay discounting and highlight the need for further exploration.

This paper presents the soma design process of creating Body Electric: a novel interface for the capture and use of biofeedback signals and physiological changes generated in the body by breathing, during singing. This NIME design is grounded in the performer's experience of, and relationship to, their body and their voice. We show that NIME design using principles from soma design can offer creative opportunities in developing novel sensing mechanisms, which can in turn inform composition and further elicit curious engagements between performer and artefact, disrupting notions of performer-led control. Abstract

We present and publicly release a new star-forming regions emission library TODDLERS (Time evolution of Observables including Dust Diagnostics and Line Emission from Regions containing young Stars) for the publicly available radiative transfer code SKIRT. The library generation involves the spherical evolution of a homogeneous gas cloud around a young stellar cluster that accounts for stellar feedback processes including stellar winds, supernovae, and radiation pressure, as well as the gravitational forces on the gas. The semi-analytical evolution model is coupled with the photoionization code Cloudy to calculate time-dependent UV-mm spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from star-forming regions of varying metallicity, star-formation efficiency, birth-cloud density, and mass. The calculated SEDs include the stellar, nebular, and dust continuum emission along with a wide range of emission lines originating from H ii, photo-dissociation, and molecular gas regimes tabulated at high resolution. The SEDs incorporated in SKIRT are generated by calculating a stellar-mass normalized luminosity, which assumes that each emission source is composed of a power-law population of star-forming clouds. When compared to the previous treatment of star-forming regions in SKIRT, TODDLERS shows a better agreement with low-redshift observational data in the IR wavelength range while offering a more comprehensive line-emission support. The voltage-gated potassium channel KV1.3 is an important therapeutic target for the treatment of autoimmune and neuroinflammatory diseases. The recent structures of KV1.3, Shaker-IR (wild-type and inactivating W434F mutant) and an inactivating mutant of rat KV1.2-KV2.1 paddle chimera (KVChim-W362F+S367T+V377T) reveal that the transition of voltage-gated potassium channels from the open-conducting conformation into the non-conducting inactivated conformation involves the rupture of a key intra-subunit hydrogen bond that tethers the selectivity filter to the pore helix. Breakage of this bond allows the side chains of residues at the external end of the selectivity filter (Tyr447 and Asp449 in KV1.3) to rotate outwards, dilating the outer pore and disrupting ion permeation. Binding of the peptide dalazatide (ShK-186) and an antibody-ShK fusion to the external vestibule of KV1.3 narrows and stabilizes the selectivity filter in the open-conducting conformation, although K+ efflux is blocked by the peptide occluding the pore through the interaction of ShK-Lys22 with the backbone carbonyl of KV1.3-Tyr447 in the selectivity filter. Electrophysiological studies on ShK and the closely-related peptide HmK show that ShK blocks KV1.3 with significantly higher potency, even though molecular dynamics simulations show that ShK is more flexible than HmK. Binding of the anti-KV1.3 nanobody A0194009G09 to the turret and residues in the external loops of the voltage-sensing domain enhances the dilation of the outer selectivity filter in an exaggerated inactivated conformation. These studies lay the foundation to further define the mechanism of slow inactivation in KV channels and can help guide the development of future KV1.3-targeted immuno-therapeutics.

A expectativa de vida humana tem aumentado significativamente com o passar dos anos, pois pessoas acima de sessenta anos estão acrescendo sua proporção. O objetivo do estudo foi investigar os benefícios sobre a aptidão física que a prática do Método Pilates propicia a pessoas idosas. A busca foi realizada nas bases de dados Google Acadêmico, PubMed/Medline e Scielo, empregando as palavras-chave “Pilates”, “idosos (elderly)” e “envelhecimento (aging)”. Foram selecionados estudos envolvendo o envelhecimento e outros relativos aos efeitos do Método Pilates nesta população. Foram considerados somente estudos observacionais e experimentais para analisar os efeitos do Método Pilates na população idosa. A partir dos oito artigos selecionados, pôde-se observar que o Método Pilates proporcionou melhoras significativas em níveis de flexibilidade, força muscular, equilíbrio, autonomia pessoal e qualidade de vida em pessoas idosas. O Método Pilates é um programa de exercícios favorável para minimizar ou reverter os efeitos negativos do envelhecimento e aprimorar os níveis necessários de aptidão física para o idoso.

Abstract

Abstract Blood pressure (BP) is one of the most prominent indicators of potential cardiovascular disorders. Traditionally, BP measurement relies on inflatable cuffs, which is inconvenient and limit the acquisition of such important health-related information in general population. Based on large amounts of well-collected and annotated data, deep-learning approaches present a generalization potential that arose as an alternative to enable more pervasive approaches. However, most existing work in this area currently uses datasets with limitations, such as lack of subject identification and severe data imbalance that can result in data leakage and algorithm bias. Thus, to offer a more properly curated source of information, we propose a derivative dataset composed of 380 hours of the most common biomedical signals, including arterial blood pressure, photoplethysmography, and electrocardiogram for 1,524 anonymized subjects, each having 30 segments of 30 seconds of those signals. We also validated the proposed dataset through experiments using state-of-the-art deep-learning methods, as we highlight the importance of standardized benchmarks for calibration-free blood pressure estimation scenarios.

Abstract

A incidência de tromboembolismo venoso eleva-se com a idade. A presença de fatores de risco é a condição inicial para o estabelecimento de suspeita clínica e realização de adequada profilaxia. Objetivo: Identificar risco futuro para tromboembolismo venoso, de acordo com as características de cada indivíduo no ambulatório de geriatria e avaliar a necessidade de prevenção mais ativa. Método: Foi aplicado o questionário QThrombosis, desenvolvido e validado pela University Park, Nottingham (Reino Unido), na Divisão de Cuidados Primários, publicado na British Medical Journal em 2011, com a revisão de prontuários, calculando, assim, o risco absoluto de tromboembolismo venoso. Resultados: Foram avaliados 160 prontuários, incluindo 119 de mulheres e 41 de homens, com média de idade de 76,4. Observamos que a maioria dos pacientes se encontra na faixa de risco de 0-0,5% no ano um, e, no ano cinco, na faixa 1,1-5,0%. Nenhum paciente teve risco maior que 10% com um ano e, em cinco anos, encontramos que 1,25% dos pacientes têm risco maior que 10%, sendo que o intervalo de confiança desse percentual deve estar entre 0,15% a 4,44%. Conclusão: O envelhecimento envolve alterações que podem aumentar o risco de tromboembolismo venoso. Ao avaliarmos essa população, identificamos que o risco médio para tromboembolismo venoso em um e cinco anos não justifica a implantação de medidas profiláticas sistemáticas no ambulatório para tromboembolismo venoso. O recomendado é individualizar cada caso, pois o evento é grave e potencialmente fatal, podendo trazer muitos prejuízos ao paciente, impactando todo o seu contexto de vida.

Abstract

Objetivo: Este estudo visa avaliar a prevalência de hiperparatireoidismo secundário à deficiência de vitamina D e sua associação com o declínio de funcionalidade na população de idosos acima de 65 anos de idade, internados na enfermaria de geriatria do Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual. Métodos: Os idosos foram avaliados através de um questionário na forma de entrevista, elaborado com destaque para os fatores mais comuns que levam à hipovitaminose D. Foram analisadas através de escalas apropriadas as perdas funcionais das atividades básicas e instrumentais da vida diária e possível correspondência com o diagnóstico laboratorial de hipovitaminose D e hiperparatireoidismo secundário. Resultados: Foram avaliados, no final do período de verão (março) e no período de outono (meses de abril e maio), 62 pacientes internados na enfermaria de geriatria, dos quais 60 eram considerados válidos. Observou-se associação positiva de hiperparatireoidismo secundário a deficiências de vitamina D em 46,77% dos casos, sendo a média de idade de 84,75 anos. Não foi demonstrada correlação positiva entre o grau de perda funcional com o aumento do hormônio da paratireoide ou deficiência de vitamina D. Conclusão: Os dados evidenciam considerável prevalência de hiperparatireoidismo secundário à deficiência de vitamina D em pacientes internados e a importância de novas investigações, bem como a introdução de estratégias diagnósticas e de tratamentos adequados para a população subdiagnosticada. No entanto, não foi possível associar perda funcional e hiperparatireoidismo à amostra pesquisada.

46. Relationship between heart rate variability, peripheral muscle strength, functional ability, and nutritional status in hospitalized older adults with sarcopenia

Abstract

Objectives: To screen hospitalized older adults for sarcopenia and ascertain whether correlations exist between heart rate variability (HRV), peripheral muscle strength, functional ability, independence, and nutritional aspects in this population. Methods: Observational study of hospitalized adults aged > 60 years who were clinically stable and able to complete the study assessments. HRV, functionality, peripheral muscle strength, independence, level of physical activity, nutritional aspects, and risk of death were assessed. The Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests and Spearman correlations were used for statistical analysis; significance was accepted at p < 0.05. Results: The sample comprised 40 older adults, of whom only nine (22.50%) did not meet criteria for sarcopenia. HRV in participants with sarcopenia correlated positively with level of physical activity (rs 0.92, p = 0.001) and nutritional condition (rs 0.79, p = 0.001), and negatively with mortality (rs -0.59, p = 0.04) (rs 0.79, p = 0.001). In older adults without sarcopenia, HRV correlated positively with independence (rs 0.83, p = 0.001) and muscle strength (rs 0.67, p = 0.04). Conclusion: Most hospitalized older adults meet criteria for sarcopenia. In this population, better autonomic control of the heart is associated with greater independence, muscle strength, physical activity level, and better nutritional status, while worse HRV is associated with a higher risk of mortality.

Abstract

Monitoring irrigated rice crops is essential for efficient agricultural management, and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are beneficial due to their capability to function in all weather conditions. However, speckle noise in SAR images complicates the classification of land cover. This study evaluates speckle filtering techniques to enhance the image quality of SAR for rice field monitoring. We extend previous work by comparing Bayesian filters in the spatial domain with advanced transform domain methods, including block matching 3D (BM3D) and Discrete Fourier Transform-extracted Edge (DFT Edge) techniques, across different rice growth stages. Twenty-two Sentinel-1B SAR images from the municipality of Turvo, Santa Catarina, Brazil were analyzed. Filters were assessed using metrics for speckle suppression and edge preservation. Our experiments reveal that BM3D with a sigma parameter of 10 (BM3Dsigma10 ) provided superior results, balancing effective speckle suppression and edge preservation. Specifically, BM3Dsigma10 was superior in preserving edge details compared to other techniques. However, as the σ value increased, a loss in resolution was observed, even for the DFT Edge method, which, while efficient in edge preservation, often resulted in reduced detail resolution. These findings highlight the importance of selecting appropriate filtering techniques for accurate agricultural monitoring using SAR data.

Abstract

Malignant lymphoma is an unusual form of gallbladder neoplasm. Almost all these tumors are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphomas. Herein, we present a literature review of gallbladder Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL) cases that includes also an unpublished case in an HIV-infected child, observed by our center. The patient (a five-year-old black female child) attended the Federal Hospital of Lagoa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, underwent cholecystectomy, and the postoperative pathological analysis of the gallbladder revealed a diagnosis of BL (EBV-positive). Also, HIV serology was performed and returned positive. She was transferred to the Martagão Gesteira Institute of Pediatrics and Childcare for oncological treatment, dying from sepsis and disease progression about 18 months later. The patient did not undergo ART/cART. Previous cases of gallbladder BL were herein described and analyzed to characterize the clinicopathological features and possible similarities. BL can occur in the gallbladder both in the context of HIV infection and in the pediatric population. A biopsy is mandatory in cases with suggestive findings of lymphoma, and an early diagnosis can change the course of the disease. Furthermore, the case highlights the importance of an early initiation of ART/cART in people living with HIV (PLWH), especially in children.

In addition, the applicability in a well-defined cohort of patients with atypical Parkinsonian syndromes was investigated for the very first time.Methods: A clinically well-defined cohort of 122 patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), 55 patients with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and 33 patients with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) were analyzed. First, the SEND-PD was correlated with established disease-specific scores in patients with PD. Next, the results of the SEND-PD were compared between the different Parkinsonian syndromes.Results: The SEND-PD showed a strong significant correlation with several scores, especially the UPDRS I (Rho = 0.655) and GDS-15 (Rho = 0.645). Depressive burden was significantly higher in MSA patients in comparison to the PD patient cohort (PD, 3.8 ± 3.3; MSA, 5.45 ± 3.87), while PSP patients showed significantly less psychotic (PD 1.6 ± 2.1; PSP 0.6 ± 0.9) and impulse control disorders (PD 0.3 ± 1.0; PSP 0.02 ± 0.1).Conclusion: The SEND-PD is a useful, brief and highly applicable screening tool for neuropsychiatric symptoms in PD, but not in atypical Parkinsonism, as their unique neuropsychiatric symptom composition is not fully captured.Keywords: neuropsychiatric symptoms, SEND-PD, Parkinsonian syndromes

Bartonella spp. are opportunistic, vectorborne bacteria that can cause disease in both animals and humans. We investigated the molecular occurrence of Bartonella spp. in 634 phlebotomine sand fly specimens, belonging to 44 different sand fly species, sampled during 2017–2021 in north and northeastern Brazil. We detected Bartonella sp. DNA in 8.7% (55/634) of the specimens by using a quantitative real-time PCR targeting the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer intergenic region. Phylogenetic analysis positioned the Lutzomyia longipalpis sand fly–associated Bartonella gltA gene sequence in the same subclade as Bartonella ancashensis sequences and revealed a Bartonella sp. sequence in a Dampfomyia beltrani sand fly from Mexico. We amplified a bat-associated Bartonella nuoG sequence from a specimen of Nyssomyia antunesi sand fly. Our findings document the presence of Bartonella DNA in sand flies from Brazil, suggesting possible involvement of these insects in the epidemiologic cycle of Bartonella species.
